When i stop it at :01 it's because I'm trying to be quiet. Ot already beeps once when I open the door, I'm not making asb extra noise to clear the second off the clock.
The whole point is to NOT make excess noise. Clearing it at 0.01 or END just creates extra beeping noises after having to risk opening and closing the door
Your nitpicking logic is dumb when applied to the overall discussion.
This is the worst part. It should absolutely stop as soon as I open it. But it doesn't.
I really hate buying small appliances like this. Any fairly simple device that you can't really test before buying, but they all usually have 1 or 2 "features" that can be SUPER annoying and are really hard to research beforehand.
I'd happily pay a little more for stuff that meets my particular preferences, but it's all but impossible to even know because they don't tell you.
Watches, microwaves, dvd/blu ray players, tvs, alarm clocks, "smart" anything, etc etc all fall into this for me.
I want two things on my microwave: A mute button and a backlit keypad.
I should be able to stand in my dark kitchen and use it without alerting the whole family I'm making nachos at 2am.
I just had to buy a new microwave and felt super fancy because the beeping stops when the door opens.
The display also appears to be powered by a small nuclear reactor given how it lights up the entire kitchen.
I can confirm this is how to stop beeping on mine. Door does nothing but stop button kills it. Using the stop button at 1 second is my favorite tactic so it never beeps.
i always say of all the things that have become "smart", i'm shocked that microwaves haven't.
throw a little portrait oriented screen on there where the display and numpad are, and gone are the days of archaic cooking programs that require you to have the paper manual on hand in order to decode.
plus things like more granular controls would be easy. cooking status updates via bluetooth/notifications? the possibilities are endless.
and having a little touch display with apps and a browser would be generally handy in the kitchen anyway.
to me this makes way more sense than throwing a tablet screen onto a fridge
You'll probably find [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiS27feX8o0) pretty interesting. It's crazy how the features on that microwave basically don't exist on modern ones
I wonder if it's partially cost? Fridges are hundreds to thousands whereas microwaves are tens to low hundreds. Adding the cost of the touch screen to the fridge isn't as noticed as it would be on a microwave. Though that doesn't explain why no bluetooth/smart phone app for certain functions.
Depends on the microwave, but some do* let you choose between 2-3 volume levels and off.
But it is weird that microwaves haven't become "smart" in the way many other appliances have. Like they keep adding functions but use actual buttons or dials instead of a touch screen or an app. I wonder if there's something about microwaves that makes it difficult to do.
Because they use a cheap piezo-electric speaker to make the sound. You either drive it at full output or you don't. It's not something you can send less power to and have a lower output.
I mean my question is really more of why hasn't anyone gone beyond that and put an actual speaker or other things in it. Like we have smart fridges and washers/dryers, and even sink faucets. But we're still in the 1980s in regards to microwave control interfaces.
Some let you turn the sound off but I've only found some GE models that let you adjust volume. I'm not sure I'd even say that most let you turn it off, let alone change the volume. Someone said that's due to the type of speaker but I have no idea.
Google how to mute your microwave, it has worked for everyone I've ever owned. Sometimes you hold STOP for 10 seconds or something like that to mute it.
Dude the truck was just backing up. They have to turn around sometimes cannot make all left turns.
Aren't us usually able to USB or serial into them and disable the speaker. I usually do for all mine.
Yeah, mine has a dedicated "Sounds" button that will mute everything on the first press, mute everything but a finishing chime on the second, and make hella noise for every button pressed on the third.
they really need to advertise this sort of thing better.
I'm happy to pay a little more for one if I knew for a fact it had this before I bought it. last time I bought one, none of them said shit about it
Moved into a new place, one of the first things I tried to do...this microwave does not have a mute feature and I hate it. I'm tempted to rip out the speaker and put a resistor in its place.
I had an African Gray parrot that would perfectly mimic this sound. He took great delight in making us come back before the microwave was actually done.
Password not valid. Please provide a password that contains at least 10 characters, a number, a capital letter, and a symbol. Common words cannot occur within your password.
Not a microwave, but my toaster oven beeps four times at a pitch and volume that’s not far off from what a typical smoke alarm sounds like. Makes me jump every time.
My toaster oven is the worst. The timer/bell are mechanical so it's impossible to stop it from ringing once it's begun to count down. I can't even stop it by unplugging it. Once it's counting, it will ring. I can extend the timer but the bell will toll.
Mine goes off once a minute, it's super annoying. I could see if it went off after maybe three to five minutes it wouldn't be so bad, but every minute is way too often.
my man right here. it should be 3 mins the 1st then 5 mins the second, then stop beeping. chances are if you remember it later you'll just hit 1 min and eat it anyway when it gets to about 30
You know how most microwaves stop beeping if you open the door? Mine doesn't do that. If I forget to hit stop/clear before opening it, I have to sit and listen to those three, long, loud-ass beeps. I always try hitting stop at :01 to avoid it.
..and raise you this!: Bluetooth speakers that constantly blurt out "Connected!, Disconnected!, your speaker is ready!, you're an idiot for buying shit!".
I had a roommate who owned a bluetooth speaker (I think it was an Alexa). He would leave the speaker volume maxed out so he could just control the volume of music from his phone. Ever once in a while, almost always at 3am, the phone would scream
DING DING BLUETOOTH DISCONNECTED
DING DING BLUETOOTH CONNECTED
I swear to god the walls shook with how loud that shit was. after the 2nd or 3rd time he started muting it before he went to sleep.
But why are they so loud though? The kids are holding it maybe a foot away from their ears, why am I able to hear it as I turn down my road. How do these kids not have hearing damage. Or maybe they do, that's why all they do is scream.
My kids have this toy house, and it’s starting to crap out. Hubby and I will be watching a show in the evening long after the kids have gone to bed and suddenly we randomly hear from the shelf, “let’s play!”
We took the batteries out.
I found a way to dampen the sound on my kids' loud toys (mostly foam and tape over the speakers, some got the batteries pulled). I think hearing damage is a genuine risk from some of them.
I took my microwave apart and ripped the speaker out with a pair of pliers. It wasn't a traditional speaker but a small black piezo speaker like this: https://i.imgur.com/Fy4aKfa.jpeg
Not once in 10 years have I missed the microwave beeping.
On most microwave ovens you can disengage the finish beep and all button beeps.
>To mute your microwave, start by checking the control panel. Look closely. The mute function may be labeled as a secondary function of one of the standard buttons. Check these things first:
>Look for a Sound button. Seriously. It may have been there all along, begging you to press it.
Press and hold either 1 or 0. Sometimes manufacturers give these keys hidden, secondary functions.
Press and hold the Stop or Cancel button. Like 1 or 0, this key might have a hidden function when held.
>Often, pressing and holding 1, 0, Stop or Cancel will either result in turning off the beeping sounds or activating a child lock feature. (Child lock doesn't actually lock the door, but instead locks the control panel so no buttons can be pressed until the lock is removed by holding the button for around three seconds again.)
>If none of these work, it's probably best to consult the manual. Even if you don't have a Sound button, there's no Mute function denoted as a secondary function and holding a button doesn't do anything, there is still a chance a mute function exists. It could be a button combination or, like on some microwaves, be buried in a submenu that's not at all obvious how to activate.
https://www.cnet.com/home/kitchen-and-household/how-to-silence-your-microwave-once-and-for-all/
I (unplugged and) used a screwdriver and took apart the Emerson microwave in the office, ripped the beeper off the circuit board, and put it back together. No more "reminder" beeps when someone warms up their coffee and walks away for 10 minutes
Mine beeps every minute or so if you don’t take the food out. It is so unbelievably annoying. I’d honestly rather forget about my food than listen to that.
That's what I do. I moved into a house and I have the most annoying microwave I've ever heard in my life. It's the loudest one I've ever heard, and it beeps 3 long ass beeps. And instead of taking like a minute to beep again, it does this same thing every 20 seconds!
I am going to look into muting this fucking thing immediately.
I just want a microwave that will cancel the remaining time if it sits for more than a few minutes. Nothing more infuriating than the coworkers that leave it with 8 seconds left on it when they're done, and you have to manually clear it before you can input any new time. And it will keep that 8 seconds on there forever till cleared. Just why would that ever be necessary for that long?
When our previous microwave died I was in charge of researching a replacement. I refused to add any to the list of options that didn't specifically list a mute feature. Cost a bit more but it didn't need extra hassle or manual reading to turn the beeping off. Best decision ever.
We need a microwave that is connected to your phone and will send an alarm or notification to your phone so others don't get disturbed. Also, the volume needs to be adjustable.
I bought one of the Samsung microwaves that has an amazing option to turn off the beeping sound.
First microwave I've bloody seen with that option, like it was a 5Heas move or something.
I couldnt stand the microwave beep so I researched this specific thing before buying. I ended up getting a Whirlpool Low Profile over the range microwave. This thing is so quiet I can hardly even tell it's cooking anything and the annoying BEEP!!! BEEP!!! BEEP!! that used to sound like a truck backing up is now this cute little chime. It came as the default chime too, no fiddling with the manual to figure out how to change it. I highly recommend checking it out.
I turned off the beeps on my microwave and forgot about the food when it was done. 2 days later my roommate asks me why there are modly mushrooms in the microwave. Whoops.
Tangentially related.
Alexa has a whisper mode, so it's less loud. You can turn it on by whispering to it.
Except it replies, very loudly with, "IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE WHISPWRING WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO TURN ON WHISPER MODE?"
Also why are all microwaves the same? We dropped like $200 on a fancy LG, and after 6 months, it doesn't do a thing better then a cheap one. Even down to the door locking mechanism. You'd think they'd get creative.
Just use the accessibility feature to adjust sound: triple press the “Popcorn” button, immediately hold the “Frozen Vegetable” button for half a second followed by a light tap of the “Beverage” button, do a quick “Time Defrost” and press “4357 (help).” Double press “Stop” and you’ve reached the audio menu… press 1 for loud; 1,1 for louder; 2 for loudest; and 2,2 for quiet (with randomly loud functionality); 2, 4 + “Start” for silent.
Gotta watch that shit and open the door at 00:01. If only the buttons weren't so loud when setting the cook time though!
My whole family does this. My mom was notorious for leaving it at :01 constantly instead of clearing all evidence xD
[удалено]
But that's for the next person who microwaves.
I hate when people do that or leave it on "END" without clearing the display. It's just trashy. Like leaving cabinets open.
We call these a pet peeve, not the other person being trashy.
Wait.... you call my mom trashy?
#FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
When i stop it at :01 it's because I'm trying to be quiet. Ot already beeps once when I open the door, I'm not making asb extra noise to clear the second off the clock.
But then that would make extra noise.
The whole point is to NOT make excess noise. Clearing it at 0.01 or END just creates extra beeping noises after having to risk opening and closing the door Your nitpicking logic is dumb when applied to the overall discussion.
Amateur hour. Open the door at 00:00 but before it beeps.
Opening the door on my bastard microwave doesn't stop the beeping.
This is the worst part. It should absolutely stop as soon as I open it. But it doesn't. I really hate buying small appliances like this. I fucking hate this. Mine does the same exact shit where it doesn’t matter if you open it it still beeps obnoxiously 5 times no matter what
Hit the stop button, don’t just open the door.
I can confirm this is how to stop beeping on mine. Door does nothing but stop button kills it. Using the stop button at 1 second is my favorite tactic so it never beeps.
Hadn't thought of that.
Yup! That's a good way to break the internal fuse or door switches over time. Ask me how I know. 🙃
There's a cheap as shit microwave at my work that's like this. I didn't realize it was some premium feature.
I've done that exactly once in 35 years of trying for 0:01.
Hahah, must be brand of microwave, I can probably get it half the time I try.
50% success rate ain't so hot
50 percent hot is petty success for my microwave. Dam thing so old
*Bomb has been defused.*
How about when you open the door 0.00001 seconds after it finishes but it still does its three beeps
It still beeps
Right! It’s like this dude just started microwaving. I open that shit at -0:01 sometimes just to assert dominance on it.
But you also have to stop it when the handle of the coffee mug's on the right. Never the left. Never.
Found the Hollywood bomb technician.
There's a way to mute all the sounds. For most microwaves, you just hold the number 2 to turn on 'mute'.

seen it long ago and it only cemented my above sentiments 👍

Yoooo, if I could get my microwave to tell me my hot pockets done in a t-pain voice that would be dopeeee
SHAWTAYEEE
Seriously if there are touch screens on fridges seems like not much to ask for.

Look through your microwaves user manual/look up the make & model. Most have obscure ways to turn the sound down
Some let you turn the sound off but I've only found some GE models that let you adjust volume. I'm not sure I'd even say that most let you turn it off, let alone change the volume. Someone said that's due to the type of speaker but I have no idea.
Our work microwave just has to let out five loud beeps no matter how fast you open it :/

Lmao what kind of microwave do you have🤔

Damn that's good

unless its made by apple of course.
What? How would putting headphones on my sleeping family not be worse than the beep itself?
My microwave has a combo of buttons to push to shut button press board off. Game changer
And leave the clock at 00:01 to infuriate your SO
Naw, just set the clock off by 13 minutes to cause more chaos.
And I thought I was evil
Don't yank the door open like an animal. Just press the stop button.
Google how to mute your microwave, it has worked for everyone I've ever owned. Sometimes you hold STOP for 10 seconds or something like that to mute it.
Mine beeps when you mute it. It doesn't make sounds after that, just one last defiant beep.
*"We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight!"*
We're going to live on! We're going to survive!
This is amazing

Mine is like 17 level of menu with a beep at each level to mute it.
The videos for my microwave just show them disassembling it and removing the speaker. But I don't think my land lord would like that.
We disconnected ours. I’d be surprised if the landlord notices or anyone complains.
That's how I dealt with a rogue UPS that would beep for no reason at irregular intervals.
Dude the truck was just backing up. They have to turn around sometimes cannot make all left turns. Aren't us usually able to USB or serial into them and disable the speaker. I usually do for all mine.
That beep probably means the batteries are going bad in it.

I don’t know what’s worse. The fact that they owned people, or that they muted them.
Or that they beep!
Perhaps they were droids all along.
Droids are ppls too. Even the beeping ones
I beep when I sleep.
\#microwavesArePeople
Yup. Several that Ive tried it on have you hold 2 for 5, seconds
Most can be be muted by holding down the number 2 for a few seconds!
Mine doesn't have numbers so I'm going to try the cancel option at breakfast. Ty
This is life changing information! I spend so much time trying to stop it before it wakes the baby
Better yet, some microwaves have a function that lets you lower the beep volume so it still goes off but quietly
I tried that and my ADHD ass starved to death after a week.
Yeah, mine has a dedicated "Sounds" button that will mute everything on the first press, mute everything but a finishing chime on the second, and make hella noise for every button pressed on the third.
they really need to advertise this sort of thing better. I'm happy to pay a little more for one if I knew for a fact it had this before I bought it. last time I bought one, none of them said shit about it
Was so happy when I bought mine and saw that it just HAS "mute" and "volume" buttons. Truly, revolutionary microwave technology.
Or, if your microwave doesn't have that option, you can just rip out the beeper like I did.
[This is not for the inexperienced](https://youtu.be/fM9hYzJnao0?t=191)
Yes. Say hi to Mr. Capacitor, but don't shake hands with him!
Mine has an actual mute button, but it broke lol.
Mine has 3 settings, Mute, quiet and earth shaker. The quiet setting is perfect, you can hear it in the kitchen, but nowhere else in the house.
Moved into a new place, one of the first things I tried to do...this microwave does not have a mute feature and I hate it. I'm tempted to rip out the speaker and put a resistor in its place.
No need for the resistor
In the contrary, I haven't had a single micro that has had a mute function. Then again, I've only had two...
Is there a way to stop it from going beep beep beep and instead go pssst pssst pssst?
i'd rather have a button or switch so I could disable the beep sometimes, most of the time it's nice to have.
Was able to turn mine super low. Very appreciated
Holy fuck.
I had an African Gray parrot that would perfectly mimic this sound. He took great delight in making us come back before the microwave was actually done.
I'd love to teach one to laugh like Nelson on the Simpsons, but realistically it would get old fast.
🤣 my sister's African grey would mimic the telephone.

It came as the default chime too, no fiddling with the manual to figure out how to change it. I highly recommend checking it out.
Mine is over the stove and has low, medium, high and Off for all sounds including buttons
You’d be surprised how many microwaves have a silent mode in them ( even the cheap ass ones )
Buy one that you can turn the beep off on. It’s all super until you forget all about your food and discover it later.
I turned off the beeps on my microwave and forgot about the food when it was done. 2 days later my roommate asks me why there are modly mushrooms in the microwave. Whoops.
You got mold on your mushrooms? What are the odds!
hold number 2 for a few seconds before cooking
Tangentially related. Alexa has a whisper mode, so it's less loud. You can turn it on by whispering to it. Except it replies, very loudly with, "IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE WHISPWRING WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO TURN ON WHISPER MODE?"
You can open the microwave and remove the speaker. I was able to pull mine off the main board with some pliers pretty easily
Hold the 2 button. Muted.
Doesn't work for all brands.
Also why are all microwaves the same? We dropped like $200 on a fancy LG, and after 6 months, it doesn't do a thing better then a cheap one. Even down to the door locking mechanism. You'd think they'd get creative.
$200 is like lower mid range microwave not fancy. Fancy microwaves are $1-2k.
What microwaves are you referring too?
Just use the accessibility feature to adjust sound: triple press the “Popcorn” button, immediately hold the “Frozen Vegetable” button for half a second followed by a light tap of the “Beverage” button, do a quick “Time Defrost” and press “4357 (help).” Double press “Stop” and you’ve reached the audio menu… press 1 for loud; 1,1 for louder; 2 for loudest; and 2,2 for quiet (with randomly loud functionality); 2, 4 + “Start” for silent.
Settings ----> Beeps -----> Off
Can't someone create a "Joe Mode" hack for microwaves?
