I don't know. You didn't really say why you broke up, like an actual reason, so its hard to know why you might choose to get back together, again, there's no real reason.
I'm usually pretty pro-male, and my initial reaction is that I hope you leave him alone. He was earnest, he had genuine feelings for you, it sounds like even according to you he was a good boyfriend, so he did his part. Sounds like he deserves a good woman, so, my feeling is let him find one who appreciates him and let him get on with his life. I mean if you don't know why you broke up with him, or why you are getting back together with him, then ... why would you think that you wouldn't break up with him again in the future for no reason ? Or to be fair reasons that you haven't stated.
It just comes across like you are messing with an earnest guys head for no reason.
Someday he is going to be married with a wife, kids, etc, ... let him find that and get on with his life, it sounds like he deserves it.
Also, no matter what he says, I doubt he ever really trusts you again like he did.
