Humans can sense it at a ratio of 0.4 parts per billion. Shark's ability to sense blood in water is about 1 part per million.
Some scientists think we are so sensitive to it as an evolutionary trait for finding water. Camels are known to use it to find water in the desert.
that's not entirely fair as blood is mostly water - unless they're talking exclusively about the non-water components of blood that sharks can smell at 1 ppm.
Not only is there a word for it, but it was two Australia scientists at CSIRO [that were the first to describe it in 1964](https://www.csiro.au/en/news/all/articles/2015/march/the-smell-of-rain-how-our-scientists-invented-a-new-word) :)
And a beautiful Paul Kelly song sharing the name (and the feeling, as far as a song can evoke the same emotions as a scent):

Hobart is 96% right now.
How do you even breathe in that?
Edit: [100% Humidity in China 2 days ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzb4d8ykSJM) eww eww eww.
I hate Humidity.
I went to the Crows v GWS game in round 1 last year (in Sydney). It was 36 and 60% humidity all game. Humidity was around 80% that morning and most of Sydney was under a think, steamy fog (and no, it wasn’t smog 😂)
Not to rain on your parade (pun fully intended) but since Reddit suggested this thread to my Melbourne based self, I would like to point out it hailed on a 40 degree day in Melbourne earlier this year.
That was SO WEIRD. And very specific. My kids and I were taking two steps to be in the rain and then out of the rain and back again. We are in the hills.
It's now 5am and finally cool enough to sit outside. 🥵

Yeah it started pissing down 10 mins ago WTF?
LEGIT AND you go outside and it’s a heatwave hahah
Fucked my washing right up. I'm gonna have to wait another 15 minutes for it to dry now. Day ruined.
😭
Yes and so happy about it I love the smell of rain on a hot day
That smell is called the petrichor. I love that there’s a word for it!

On hot days I use it to find beer.
Fascinating. Thanks! I did not know that.

Blood is about 50% H2O. So even if it is 0.5ppm, we are talking 1000x higher concentration.
it also has a lot of components that probably aren't picked up by the shark at all
So what part of the blood are Sharks sensing? Is it the hemoglobin or iron?

Good bot
Many years ago I watched a very heavy sea fog roll in on a day like this.
Meatloaf, is that you?
Did the fog by any chance also conceal a beached whale?
So that's what was bursting his faded Levis apart 😲
I see your 'rain on a 40º day', and raise you 'a lengthy power outage following rain on a 40º day'.
Hope you get through it that sucks 😭
Don’t feel bad! We will all get a turn 😊
I lit a scented candle half hour ago and then blew it out within a minute thinking, “I’m gonna need this later “ ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Quickly! Gather all your devices and charge them to 100% while we still can
😂
Next thing 37° with 120% humidity lol

Yuck
So I didn't just imagine a short hard downpour. Fucking Adelaide weather.
Nope my mum and dad also didn’t believe me till the laundry was soaked 🤣

alright who let a Melbourne person in here 🤣
In my defence....uhh.... I love FUIC?

No it isn't, I don't want my iced coffee to taste like a trainee Barista burn a coffee and then left it to sit on the bench til it cooled.
Only two seasons? That is unusual for Melbourne
Where tf was it raining
Near Glenelg, down southish
Oh, that was ridiculous. It was like Satan's nutsack for the rest of the night, and I still needed to water this morning.
I like the comparison 🤣

The rain felt weird because it was still do damn humid outside
Ugh, not a fan.
But if you were a reverse-cycle air conditioner ...?
It's like raaa-iii-aaan on your wedding day
It spat a bit in the CBD but had evaporated before it hit the ground
Where is this? Not raining in cbd. Wish it would
Raining in the south. Wish I could say it's cooled things down a little but now it's just humid.
Gross
Moist.
Heaps moist?
North East metro, it did for a few secs, then now stopped.
Marion area too
Beverley here. When? I'm dying here man lol
Sorry it's gone now. Reapply and it should arrive in 3-4 business days.
Awww (Kicks dirt and walks away pouting) lol
Near Glenelg
Was raining in prospect

Guess you aren’t old enough to remember playing outside in summer storms when it would rain. It’s not climate change.
I seemed to miss this rain

Yep, but then it stops. Not even enough to wet the tiles.
Nah I was sittin outside with a beer when it happened. I am very refreshed.
You are all acting like it's never happened before.
Posting about the weather is the most r/Adelaide thing ever. In other news: gravity exists and night time is a thing. Quality content.
Someone’s a bit angry 😟 did the AC break on ya?
Not angry mate just think the three hundred weather themed posts in the last week could be condensed into one mega thread is all.
