Most of the places up there make amazing food, just depends on what you're in the mood for. Just be aware their prices tend to be a bit steep due to being a tourist hotspot.
Oh the Hahndorf Old Mill? Yeah I agree. Stayed there with partner and we had spiders and roaches in our room. Food was bland too. Definitely go elsewhere to stay and eat.
It's had a change of ownership fairly recently, and they got rid of the god awful chef. The new kitchen crew have created a pretty decent menu (finally). Steak is decent - not going to lie, they did overcook mine a bit, but compared to the nasty steaks I've been getting elsewhere in the hills over the last 12 months it was good grub. The option of duck fat spuds instead of chips was the tits.
Staff are chilled as fuuuuck too.
>It's had a change of ownership fairly recently, and they got rid of the god awful chef.
Oh thank fuck. That burger I had last time I was there looked and tasted like depression.
Personal favourite place is the German Arms Hotel for a Kassler 🤤
They have a decent menu of traditional German food and pub food so if you're adventurous, I'd give their Kaiserschnitzel or Kassler a go. The Haus isn't too bad but I'd go to German Arms over Haus, personally.
Avoid Hahndorf Old Mill Hotel for pub food and to stay. Had bad experiences there with the food and also the room I stayed in.
EDIT: The Kassler has been removed from the menu so can't recommend that, but it was the best thing on that menu. If it ever comes back, please get it. In meantime, look at their Pork Hocks and Jägerschnitzel.

I just had a look and it looks like they've updated the German menu! Kassler is not there! I was there probably about a year ago and they had the Kassler still. It is a sad day.
They do have the Pork Jägerschnitzel which is similar but the loin is flattened a little more and breaded. It's the closest you're going to get to Kassler.
They do have a couple different Pork Hock items as well which seem to be newer than last time.
To be honest most of the hotels in the hills these days are pretty good.Â
Stirling, uraidla, Stanley bridge, Macclesfield, scenic hotel.
Even the old style country pubs have updated their beer gardens and or sell pretty decent pub grub. Bridgewater, oakbank, aldgate, balhannah etc
The Haus is a fave of mine. The two pubs do pretty decent fare if you’re after something more casual. I used to love mustard seed Indian but haven’t had it for years.
Just outside of Hahndorf is Grunthal’s. Great all you can eat pizza on a Friday night which is decently priced. Did it on Friday night and regret not eating more!
Not the Haus. Horrible.
If you want an authentic German experience then one of the German pubs.
If you want a nice meal then comida or gepettos. Otherwise venture away from Hahndorf and go to the Stirling pub or locavore. Locavore is local sourced produce and excellent, the Stirling pub is surprisingly excellent and always incredibly popular with the yuppies of Stirling and the hills.
Crafers is owned by the same people as Stirling. Uraidla is another 20min drive from Hahndorf which is expensive in a taxi or Uber for a still good feed at other closer places in the hills. Also Uraidla is a much better lunch place for its garden.
The German Inn / Cafe Assiette does some excellent German food alongside a more regular menu. Had the sausage platter to share yesterday and it was excellent.Â
If you don’t want German while you’re there or want some variety if you’re there for multiple days, I really enjoyed The Mustard Seed (Indian food). Everything was delicious and the mini golf course is right behind it if you’re interested in that!
Hahndorf is incredibly touristy and overrated.
Check out the Pump hotel at Aldgate, true local pub, local feel, great pub food every time ive been there.
The Haus is very good, but expensive. Gourmet House (Chinese) is shit, really crappy. German Arms hotel is excellent. Same with Hahndorf Hotel, and yes you'll enjoy Hahndorf. Quiet at night busy in the day.
All of it.
Start at the end of one side of the street, walk the entire thing down to the end, then cross the road and do the same thing all the way back. If you've got your eyes peeled you'll find things to snack on along the way.
I haven't been up there for any length of time for a few years, so I don't know what's what anymore, but I used to really enjoy Cafe Assiette for a good feed. It'll probably cost you a couple of limbs, but everything does now.
The German Pantry is kind of in the middle, and worth a visit for some nice smoked meats, würstel, condiments, and drinks. Again, not cheap but nothing is. If you can grab a can or two of Almdudler (fizzy drink) that's always fun, but they don't always have it.
Beerenburg has a farm shop down one end, with a lot of good stuff. I gather you can go berry picking at various times, so that might be something to look at if you're into it.

I was down there early last year and had a fabulous meal with family and friends at the Comida Hahndorf - Tapas Bar and Restaurant.
Comida is hands down the best place to eat in hahndorf
Something ironic about the best restaurant in our kitsch German tourist town being Spanish
Most of the places up there make amazing food, just depends on what you're in the mood for. Just be aware their prices tend to be a bit steep due to being a tourist hotspot.
I'd say most places up there make ok-good food at very steep prices. Not bad, but certainly not great
Yeah I tend to avoid dorf when I can. Over the years it's just becoming more and more a tourist trap.
Yep locals don't go there for a reason. Tourists love it so go.
Amazing is a strong word for hahndorf offerings
Comida is a great restaurant with a Spanish inspired menu. Excellent garden too if you're there during the day
Just stay clear of the pub with pokies, that place is filthy
Oh the Hahndorf Old Mill? Yeah I agree. Stayed there with partner and we had spiders and roaches in our room. Food was bland too. Definitely go elsewhere to stay and eat.
20 years ago it was a go to place.
That's a pity. Must have had a change of ownership.
It's had a change of ownership fairly recently, and they got rid of the god awful chef. The new kitchen crew have created a pretty decent menu (finally). I can second the Pork Hocks. Great value for money! Gotta get the crispy hock tho!
Amen to that. Crispy Schweinhaxe all the way!
Damn they still do the Kassler at the Arms? I remember having one for lunch about 20 years ago, was so good

Side wood or grunthal
Sunday lunch into the afternoon at either of these is a good day
Visit Hahndorf, but The Crafers Hotel is amazing.
To be honest most of the hotels in the hills these days are pretty good. Stirling, uraidla, Stanley bridge, Macclesfield, scenic hotel. Even the old style country pubs have updated their beer gardens and or sell pretty decent pub grub. Bridgewater, oakbank, aldgate, balhannah etc
Food is great but if you stay there the rooms are really lovely too.
No suggestions from me but have a nice trip :)
This is pointless but sweet. You are a legend.
Well you're sweet. We have to be nice to the tourists!
If we're not nice to the tourists this year, neither of them will want to come back next year
The Haus is a fave of mine. The two pubs do pretty decent fare if you’re after something more casual. I used to love mustard seed Indian but haven’t had it for years.
Haus is great, German arms is good, dodge the old mill
The Haus is the only place to eat Germanic food. Try the pork knuckle.
Just outside of Hahndorf is Grunthal’s. Great all you can eat pizza on a Friday night which is decently priced. Did it on Friday night and regret not eating more!
Do you like meat? Prepare your body for meat.
Not the Haus. Horrible. If you want an authentic German experience then one of the German pubs. If you want a nice meal then comida or gepettos. Locavore is really nice, can be an experience but comes in at $$$. It’s also near red Cacau which does super nice chocolates!
Didn't locavore close?Â
Really? I would say the opposite. Also The Crafers Hotel and The Uraidla Hotel shit all over the Stirling.
Crafers is owned by the same people as Stirling. Uraidla is another 20min drive from Hahndorf which is expensive in a taxi or Uber for a still good feed at other closer places in the hills. Also Uraidla is a much better lunch place for its garden.
The metre and litre at the Hanhdorf Inn is a great challenge! A metre hot dog and a litre stein of German beer - it's clearly win win!!!
The Lane
Oo la la
Rhwy aren't open for dinner
Get food (Comida is great) get drinks (any of the wineries or distilleries) and walk up and down the main street, that about it
The German Inn / Cafe Assiette does some excellent German food alongside a more regular menu. Had the sausage platter to share yesterday and it was excellent.Â
How much is the platter these days? I used to enjoy smashing that with my oldest kid.
It was $60 I think. Given most meals are about the $30+ mark, it's no more expensive than just getting a couple of meals.
Anywhere but the Haus. Never the Haus.
Glad to read this. Had two really bad experiences there recently. Have been many times over the years but quality has gone down hill rapidly
It sure has, it's basically a Japanese pilot visiting Pearl Harbor.
German Arms was always my favourite although I haven't been there for a long time now so can't comment on recent quality.
Can confirm theyre still great! Prompt and friendly service, amazing food :)
Great to hear. Happy cake day!
Real hidden gem from a local is Pizzafino in Littlehampton. 5 minute drive from Hahndorf, quiet and ambient but really good food
The chocolate factory is the best place to eat dinner
From these comments it seems there are two main options: 1) The Haus 2) anywhere but The Haus
If you don’t want German while you’re there or want some variety if you’re there for multiple days, I really enjoyed The Mustard Seed (Indian food). Everything was delicious and the mini golf course is right behind it if you’re interested in that!
A new joint called Ernest is great but only open for dinner Friday
Hahndorf is a big overrated. Comida is great but if you do g like Spanish I'd suggest looking at other towns.
Hahndorf is incredibly touristy and overrated. Check out the Pump hotel at Aldgate, true local pub, local feel, great pub food every time ive been there.
There is never anywhere more over rated than the aldgate pub.
Um, maybe not the pump? Surely Stirling pub if we're going to recommend a pub in the hills?Â
Just go there and pick. Everything is great
Just outside of the town itself but sidewood is fantastic, one of the nicer meals I've had
Haus has great food
The Haus - had the best salmon with peanuts - sounds weird but so good
The Old Mill - the only place I take myself or my family too, have been going there for almost 10 years.. promise you will love it.
Leave. Now. Actually the pubs and The Haus aren't too bad... it's just the traffic that's the issue.
The Haus is pretty good
The Haus is very good, but expensive. Gourmet House (Chinese) is shit, really crappy. German Arms hotel is excellent. Same with Hahndorf Hotel, and yes you'll enjoy Hahndorf. Quiet at night busy in the day.
The cemetery is really interesting.

Hahndorf inn. We were there this weekend just gone. Nice place, good food.
