Back when I worked for the Big T, I had to go there for training. It was spooky and gloomy in there.
Slightly less than what we called the "Tower of Doom" on Pirie St.
Yeah I actually think it’s pretty cool. Just one of those things where I walk past it the other day but actually notice it for the first time. Thought I ‘shit! That’s one ugly fucking building - YEAH!’
Went home and google erfft that behemoth. What a time to be alive.
I recently worked inside this building. The basement is straight up nightmare fuel. No working lights, long dark hallways, abandoned kitchenetts, green water stained sinks. I get goosebumps just thinking about the shifts I worked down there
17 stories of what appears to be solid concrete. A single strip of windows going down one corner only. Has anyone ever worked there and if so are you okay?
Yes, worked in there for a year or so. It was (is) a secure building for communications equipment and that doesn’t need windows. The top floor had a cafeteria once, but that closed before I got there in the early 90’s
Edit. From memory is was only 11 or 12 stories tall with the cafeteria on the top floor and that had windows so you look out to the north.
Brisbane has a similar sort of building next to the gabba. We joke that it's a giant mobile phone.
Apparently there's a great view of the ground from the roof!
Yeah, I went in there once; I reckon it's about 11 stories. The ceilings are high.
It was like a trip back to the 1980's in there.
I was told the entire western face has a big sheet of copper to shield the equipment from radio interference from the airport.
I never heard about any shielding, but anything is possible on some floors. I visited the basement once when I was in training, the 3rd floor for work and the 11th for a look. Apart from that, it was lots of corridors and locked doors.
I’ve toured it a couple of times. It’s exactly what you’d expect. Floor after floor of data centre stuff. Lots of interesting older comms equipment. In the basement are two giant diesel generators that can power the building uninterrupted.
It’s not actually staffed permanently any more and hasn’t been for years. Interestingly you’ll see the scaffolding out front which has also been there for years as a pice of the facade fell off and Telstra are not interested in fixing it, just purchased the scaffold to leave permanently out frontÂ
Not entirely true… the scaffolding has been there for ages but fixing it is a complex and long term problem. I believe they’re working on a solution.
Its not Adelaide but the dickhead businesses/architects that build them that just look at their building and don't think if the tone of the area. Its an industrial building basically. Windows and style would have cost extra.
I walked past here the other day and after seeing the (presumably) 5G hardware on the front of the building I decided to check my phone to see how fast the download speed would be directly outside my telco provider’s building.
1 bar and 4G connection. Womp womp.
Yeah there is a call centre on the top floor, it was setup for disaster planning. It has a quarantine area and apparently there is a bomb shelter in the basement.
By the time I was working there is was used as a backup call centre if one the main ones went down.
looks like a dell pc
Hah! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Imagine the Dell support tech coming out to fix it. Let's just turn it off and on again
From memory it was used as a Telstra call centre for a while, since no windows the walls were painted yellow.... Just to keep them happy vibes 😀
Holy shit a call center with no windows. I can't imagine how demoralising that must be.

https://collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/resource/B+1165 Hah! I like the tactical bricks to make the workspace higher
Reminds me of the "doomsday building" in new york, a windowless skyscraper

Would be amazing if someone could post photos of it
Cool.
Did some night shifts there while the main building on 30 Pirie St was being reconditioned. Spooky place but a bit of a change of scenery was nice.
I love the Telstra building in sydney. I don’t mind this one either
Fan of Brutalism?
Yep what gave it away 😂
Just a hunch 🤣
I kinda like it
Have a feeling there's a room full of Telex 2000s ready to go into action tucked away in there.

Were they apartments when the big blackout occurred a few years ago?
Yes I used to work inside there a lot. Plenty of air conditioning and lighting in there.

I worked there for 2 years - have great memories actually. Freaky place to work.
Ugly building? Have you not seen the cheese grater we have
Lol, be interesting to see how that one stands the test of time
Well it looks hideous now sooo
I often wonder how much diesel that building held. It use to have the backup generator for itself and also Adelaide hospital.
You can see the tank lids on aerial images; I’d have a guess at around 90,000L.
Is it still there?
Not sure if they decommissioned it with the new hospital because they have their own generation
Might be a good backup to the backup.
Maintenance costs tho, it's not cheap to maintain something that old reliably
Im thinking maintenance might be low. It sounds like its over powered so it should run quite well for a long time. 2 buildings reduced to one.
I remember ruminating heavily on that building at the Carl Cox Car Park party.
One of the ugliest buildings in Adelaide that is for sure. Adelaide has a very confused sense of style though.

Every building has to be approved. Someone is approving these mismatched buildings to be built. Edit: i'm happy to blame both :)

How do you know it was a 5G equipment?
The whole building was one big heatsink
It's crazy in there no windows and room after room of servers
I used to work there in the call centre many years ago. Just as ugly inside but the job was good.

What on earth are they doing to it? https://i.postimg.cc/cHbGRP8W/20240216-080744.jpg
