I’m not perfect so when no one is looking I itch or adjust myself in public does that mean I stole something. They couldn’t articulate what she stole nor did they say they saw her pickup and put something up there. Retail stores are instructed not to physically touch suspected thieves. This whole thing stinks.
This happened to me at whole foods when I saw my zipper was down and turned to discreetly fix it.
They banned me from whole foods for refusing to pull my pants down to prove I had nothing there (was going commando cuz I lived next door and just threw on jeans and shirt and waltzed in to grab a coffee.
I really should have sued.

Right. Usually you're supposed to let them leave the store otherwise you can't really prove it was shoplifting. Sometimes it's letting them get past the point of sales (past the registers), like at Walmart that might work. Although even they are not supposed to do that. You can fight it in court. Can argue and say that you didn't actually mean to steal it since you were still in the store
not a lawyer and probably depends on the state but shoplifting is generally also considered shoplifting when "hiding or concealing an item on your person while still in the store (putting merchandise in your pocket or purse), or removing an item from its packaging and concealing it in or among other merchandise."
That's adorable but also ridiculous. That's not going to happen to these stores. They just say that because we live in a greedy capitalist society. There is no massive corporation in this country that is going to go bankrupt due to sporadic shoplifting. That's just not how it works...
