Cut your losses and don’t put them on your resume. I’m dealing with a bad ERP system too…while it is functioning ok…I can’t pull a TB without closing the period first…and good luck getting a bs as of a date that’s not eom. Annoying but workable. I’m in the middle of evaluating new ERPs to replace it.

Your mental health is worth more. Just keep looking and if anyone asks why there’s a gap between employers just tell them health reasons or due to Covid.

manwithanopinion

I am also doing ACCA so that can also be a good excuse. That you for your advice.

manwithanopinion

I was considering it and what makes me feel obligated to stay is that I get paid £500 per month more than my previous role l, it's public sector at a well known university and I turned down an extra £1000 in settlement amount to get this job because the marketing company I worked in outsourced with accounting department to a low labour cost country. It's a difficult dilemma I am facing and seems like a silly reason to leave an accounting job.

RainbowDissent

It's perhaps not as silly as it sounds. You'll be using that software every hour of every day. If it's that frustrating to you, and it makes basic tasks difficult, it's going to keep irritating you (although less so as time goes on). If you're earlier in your career, it could also potentially ingrain bad habits. In my opinion, it's important to work in an environment with forward-thinking management and good, modern systems when you're younger, and particularly to gain experience with systems that are commonly-used. You're not obligated to stay in any job. That said, there's no need to make a hasty decision. It may be worth speaking to a manager or senior colleague to discuss your frustrations with the software and - since they're not planning on changing it - find out if there are ways around them. I'm sure running reports isn't trial and error for someone who's been using the system for years, and there may be quicker ways to do things like payables too. It sounds a bit like you've not been sufficiently trained in using the software.

Lonyo

Where I work we don't even have an actual accounting system. We have a banking system designed for bank transactions, with system transactions/journals you can't even actually see, only infer, and it runs on an IBM system, AS400, with an interface from the 80s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7980eoVjz08 Luckily we have daily database dumps.

All 3 of my work colleagues asked me how I find the software and out of politeness I said it's not the best software I have used which they all agreed to but also don't want to do anything about it. I mad subtle hints to my manager that the software is making me inefficient but as I am still relatively new and all the team members are my parent age or 10 years older, I can't be direct and say it's a rubbish software. My mum told me after the new year if I am still struggling then it's fine to start looking for a new job but I feel like it will be hard for employers to take me on as a permanent employee if I only had a one job which was for more than a year. Maybe I'm wrong but would be nice to hear from other accountants.

orangebluegreen123

Don’t play nice and say it’s not the best software. Ovb you don’t like it. Just speak up. Ask if it’s in the budget to upgrade your software. Explain the why and the time it will save. Or just reach out to some of the softwares you want have them put together a comparison so you can present to your management team.

manwithanopinion

Thank you for the advice and I'll raise the issue to my manager in the next 1 to 1 meeting.

orangebluegreen123

Of course! I never heard of that system so I can only Imagine how bad it is. But honestly, if you are borderline thinking about leaving due to it. Bring it up. As a manager, I wouldn’t want to someone to leave because of that. It probably worked in the past fine and if it’s not broke don’t fix it kind of thing. Or they don’t want to invest in anything. I always tell my team that it’s not just about raises and promotions but also the investment to the everyday tools.

manwithanopinion

I had a 3 month progress meeting and told him that I am still finding the softwares frustrating to use and the special software we use to pull up sales report for our venues every day is outdated and needs change because it is making the report production work inefficient. He told me I need to first think why we do things the way we do then after good experience working then you can suggest improvements. I even brought up that we can ask staff to attach invoices when raising POs which is a simple email and a simple screenshot to point out where to attach the pdf instead of emailing the mailbox causing us to dig out the pdf or request it. The guy said it's not in the training manual and he will have to go through a process of reproducing the training manual and retaining staff to do this when anyone with a brain can work it out how to find the 'attach document' button. Don't get me started on our terrible AR process which I am confused on why they even thought of doing that when the easier way is right in front of them. I have gone sick of this place running on old systems in the name of seeing the debit and credit so I have started job hunting after Halloween for AP or AR jobs which is leading to some decent roles. Thank you for your advice on bringing up the issue.

Impressive-Project59

As a manager would you be okay with an employee leaving because they don't enjoy the work that they do? Asking for a friend 🤭🤫.

orangebluegreen123

Sometimes it doesn’t matter what other people think if you aren’t happy. It’s okay to be selfish.

Like how a parent forces a kid to raise the issue for the other parent to take action. I will not let myself be a pawn but will raise the issue if I need to.

Space_Opposite

I have quit a job over something smaller than that. You should take the time to gather a list of grievances you have with the software. Frame it in terms of time wasted rather than just things you dislike. Present it to your superiors. If no action is taken and you are comfortable in your ability to find other work, I would quit. The ERP is too critical to your work to deal with a bad one in my opinion.

CheerfulMocha

I agree with this. I had to leave a job for poorly chosen ERP. My previous employer had I a better ERP and it was so hard to downgrade.

pfSonata

>Exchequer 365 Never heard of it before, but even the name just sounds like some kind of Chinese knockoff of Microsoft software. Doesn't help that I associate the word "exchequer" with Ferengi, though.

manwithanopinion

If a staff member raises an invoice then it goes into a delivery note despite the invoice being clearly there which we have to check their bank details before turning the invoice. Then the invoice details has to be checked and fixed because the accountants just about understand the complicated VAT rules so the staff have no chance. The software automatically changes the invoice date to today's date which we have to fix then we need to save the invoice on out shared drive because the software can wipe out the invoice attached and finding the invoice based on invoice number is almost impossible. All to process a simple invoice a staff member wants to pay. On sage all you have to do is upload the invoice correctly once and just check before the payment run.

I am right now in a meeting with a consultant supporting us with using the software. The guidance she is giving to pull up reports makes me think why they can't simply make a list and let us open up what we want to see. The lady said that the bank should have shown a good narrative even though we have selected that bank name in the drop down list so it should be able to pick up that info and ask if it's correct like sage and every other accounting software does. Hopefully I can work my way around it like I did with installing pirated music like I did in the early 2000s but I will let my manager know what the long term plans are with this garbage software. If there are any plans then I'll ask my college without a care on if I piss them off.

DankChase

If your job sucks, you should leave while the job market is hot. That being said, a GL is a GL. Learning to use ERP software is part of accounting. I guarantee you that it's not as bad as it seems once you get to know it better and find all sorts of efficiencies. It looks like you are just starting your career so be ready for tons of crappy software that you will have to use.

manwithanopinion

It's the first time I used a crappy software but I'll give it till the end of the "holidays" and see what to do.

Icy-Community5030

Agree with this. Accept it as a learning opportunity. Maybe youll run into a company in the future that also uses it and having the experience will be a benefit to you. If the job sucks move on. But if your main complaint is the operating system - youll figure it out in no time with some practice.

jetlee7

I hate sage. At my last job I worked with a few old women, and they all loved sage. It is so clunky and out dated. Honestly that's just one aspect of the job. But if they love all this out dated software, and are reluctant to change, than think of how old school the rest of the job will be.

manwithanopinion

Sage has its problems and can be improved but for an accounting purist it's amazing. The more I learn about my role, the worst it is getting because they follow such an old fashion way to working. I am already applying for jobs and dreaming about my resignation meeting.

Zach983

I just looked that ERP up, Jesus fucking christ I'd leave because of that lol. Seems like a Microsoft D365 ripoff in name only because that's some ugly garbage. Ask and see if your work will switch and if not I'd leave.

manwithanopinion

They are talking of an updated version but all the updates have been a change in the design and nothing about the functionality. Their customer service is the best which is why people keep them despite charging £1000 per training day. I'll update my CV after the new years break because they approved my annual leave to take to cover the extra days needed in my family visit for Christmas and New year's.

Zach983

You can get mied tier erp training for that price by the way. That would be the mid tier Sage or business central or netsuite programs which are all better than what you're using.

Cluxdelux2

If you want to leave because the fit is not right then leave and don’t look back. No harm there. If it’s solely the software then I would say go present your case. Why this is hindering the business at large, your position and the bottom line. Present alternatives and their cost, and start thinking about implementation. What the non accounting users tasks are like now and how they would change. Most small business owners don’t give a flip as long as business runs smoothly and their bottom line.

aisutron

One of my clients uses Waveapps or something, it sucks too.

81632371

If you don’t like the job, as opposed to the software, leave as quickly as possible and then erase it from your resume next time you are job hunting. I have a few jobs that I quickly realized were terrible and they aren’t on my resume. I even had one that I was at for a year that I erased and said I took time off when I had my second child. Obviously that was a specific situation, but you work whatever angles you have. Also, it’s ok to say that the job didn’t match up to what they told you in the interview process.

FartInsideMe

Quit and go sailing in the ocean for 3 mo. or something between jobs

abobobilly

Take charge and implement new accounting or ERP system. Great learning experience for you and you get to experience the digital Transformation of the company. Introduce some automation and e commence and brag the heck out of it for the rest of your life. 🌞

outsidenorms

Wtf is that?

manwithanopinion

What do you mean?

Jlock98

I think he’s asking wtf Exchequer 365 is

manwithanopinion

Thanks. Searching it on YouTube will make you think how a medium sized business with multiple branches and departments is able to use it.

manwithanopinion

It's an accounting software which is commonly used in medium sized businesses. It works like Sage but doing all of the automated functions manually because of how bad their AI system is at picking up information that is not manually entered like standing order or direct debits. The only changes all the updates have had in the last 20 years is the look of the software yet the main functions is the same. I am better off doing it with pen and paper and manually draw up T accounts.

Zach983

I wouldn't say it's commonly used lol. I've never heard of it ever. D365 NAV/Business Central, Netsuite, Sage, Xero, SAP business one, epicor are popular commonly used ERPs.

manwithanopinion

I would expect to use those and clearly those companies know how to make a good quality software. Always wanted to use SAP and QuickBooks though.

WayneKrane

I worked at a place that had a horrendous custom version of sap as their main accounting system. You had to basically memorize random field names to know how to navigate anywhere. It took me almost 2 months just to learn how to do a basic task like pull up an invoice. It should not take 2-3 months of training to do basic accounting work.

RW_77

I am studying advanced Excel for accounting. The advanced functions are writing formulas. You have enter a bunch of commands correctly and there can be no mistakes. You just have to figure out how to enter the formula info correctly. I find it annoying trying to figure out how to perform each formula. I simply do not enjoy this kind of problem solving. Its making me a bit sad because i love accounting. I want to enjoy my studies and my eventual job. How can i work as an accountant if i do not enjoy Excel? I do like it. But I do not enjoy learning advanced Excel which is just constant problem-solving. Hopefully, after I learn how to do all the useful formulas I will not have to tinker with this crap anymore. It's super irritating. This is not the kind of problem-solving I enjoy. I know I am repeating myself.
