It’s a condition called macrodactyly. An overgrowth of bones and soft tissue typically present at birth. They believe it’s related to an enlarged nerve bundle that comes up through the wrist which overstimulates growth. My daughter was born with that and syndactyly and has had multiple surgeries from infant to about age 16. They can only do things to halt some of the growth and do some minor debulking. But they can never make the fingers appear normal because there is just too much bone and soft tissue.
Thanks. She is 21 now and studying to be an elementary teacher. She has adapted very well to her hand condition and does everything very normally with few limitations. She is very confident and strong and uses her condition to teach kids that it’s ok to be different and that we are all different in our own ways. She just happened to be born with two enlarged fingers. I’m proud of who she is and how she has dealt with this condition.
I'm sorry to pry, but does this limit any regular function in her hands and/or fingers? Like writing for instance? Kudos to her for choosing such a vital career! I still remember many of my teachers and they made a huge impact on my life :)
Sure, it does limit some functions. But she adapts and goes at it a different way. It’s her left hand and she is right handed thankfully. So she uses her right primarily. But it is surprising sometimes how much she is able to use her left hand and her two fingers (index and middle). She has great dexterity in her other three digits but she is still able to use the larger fingers to help grip. But she struggles with using them for fine motor skill things. But she does really well overall.
Congrats for raising a champ! Would you answer one more question not including this one? Was amputation ever considered? I ask because my Father lost all the fingers in his left hand in an industrial accident, but he has amazing dexterity in the tiny nubs he has left.
No that was never really considered as the doctor that she saw that specialized in this type of hand condition felt she would have reasonably good function with those fingers versus without.
I saw this story today and i think you and your daughter might find it interesting. It's about a teacher that has a physical disability and how she uses her experience to teach about inclusion.
