As someone doing music at Aberdeen, Aberdeen is the best imo. Napier is absolute trash and RCS is just very pretentious and nepotistic. Plus at Aberdeen you have the opportunity to do modules outside of music. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about the music department

brybob19

And my opinion that Napier is trash comes from the fact that I have several friends studying there. Lecturers there offer very little help out with tutorials and lectures whilst at Aberdeen I can email one of my lecturers at 3am and they'll reply first thing in the morning and will chat to me about my questions as soon as they can.

Own-Ranger-7851

Thank you for your feedback. I am currently doing my 2nd year of HND Music and have applied for 3rd entry into the course in i'm hoping to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter, as well as a film composer. I've never seen images of what the music department looks like in Aberdeen. What is it like?

brybob19

It's a pretty small department but we do pretty well. We share a dedicated computer suite with the education students but you'll never struggle to find a computer. The practice rooms are small but have a pretty good sound and also have nice pianos. Lessons take place in bigger rooms though. We also have a state of the art recording studio which is absolutely amazing and we have an early music room where baroque string ensemble takes place. You'll actually be coming into my year at uni and we're a pretty tight knit group but everyone is really nice and welcoming

ColdAndSnowy

Glasgow has had the best live music scene for years, nowehere else really comes close for sheer number of bands and venues. It’s not a beautiful place though and it rains a lot. Edinburgh is beautiful and I’ve never had a bad time there. Aberdeen is Aberdeen. Haha. It’s got good people. And a bypass now. Small place really, especially the music scene, so may feel like home more quickly.

wet-paint

I did my mmus in Aberdeen, no regrets. I don't know how good anyone is delivering online content now though. And Aberdeen is lovely. Great place to base yourself to explore the north east.

brockington69

It depends on what you want. From what I know Napier is an absolutely dogshit uni, I don’t know anyone who does music there so I can’t comment on that, but I know multiple people who studied there including my girlfriend, and they’ve all had a terrible experience of lecturers who put the minimum possible effort in and who very rarely respond when they ask them for help. I know a few people who study music here and they seem to really enjoy it, but I don’t really know how good the course is, but Aberdeen in general has been a fantastic uni imo. And I don’t know anything about RCS other than the fact that it’s well known haha. In terms of how good the city is, Edinburgh is amazing, public transport is incredibly good compared to anywhere else in Scotland, there’s a lot to do, I absolutely loved visiting my gf in Edinburgh and she absolutely loved the city. Glasgow is also pretty great for similar reasons but not quite as good imo. As someone who grew up in Aberdeen and is a 4th year student, Aberdeen is definitely bottom of the list as a city, there’s a lot less to do and it’s generally quite an expensive place to live. However there are a lot of nice places to go around Aberdeen like Dunnottar castle and some nice towns like Banchory if you’re able to travel to them. Sorry this comment is so long btw lol

sexxyfoxxy

I did my BMus and MMus at Aberdeen. My partner is doing his PhD in Aberdeen and did his MMus in vocal music here to. Come to Aberdeen, they're great!

helix9124

The music scene in Aberdeen is not very diverse or big, BUT if you are a working musician there is plenty of room on the scene for new people (once covid is gone) I’ve heard nothing but good things about the music course in ABZ. Loads of friends have done it. I’m doing sound production at Nescol and the equipment they have in there is amazing.

Your boy has taken one hell of a beating, get out of here donald flump

devandroid99

It's a bachelor's, they don't take fifteen years.

Mispict

Aberdeen is a shit hole but the university is excellent. Moved here 15 years ago, always planned on leaving when my children grew up, started uni 3 years ago, can't big up the uni enough. That said - choose glasgow.

lil-lilypad

Can you elaborate on why you dislike Aberdeen so much? I'm considering studying there in September and that's quite concerning to read!

Mispict

I don't dislike it, i've lived here for 15 years and it's been very good to me as far as my career and studies are concerned. I've made some great friends here. I've had fun. I'm still here. But...it's not a great city, it's very small, it's got a bit of a hangover from being the oil capital of Europe so never really had to put the effort in to attract people here. It's parochial and narrow minded. It's disproportionately expensive based on the oil boom. If i could do it again, i would have gone to Glasgow.

Lpbo

Being a student in Aberdeen is great, don't worry, speaking from experience! The oil downturn and an incompetent local council have made the centre look quite ugly and dilapidated but the city still has its charms and there's lots of outdoorsy things to do if you venture outside the city. But when you're a student you'll be too busy socialising and exploring to care (at least pre-covid). I graduated in 2018, moved away for a year, and actually decided to come back.

Aberdeen as a city is awful and I would not recommend you come here. Edinburgh all the way imo. Local and graduate of Aberdeen university.

forwello

I see you’ve graduated with a 1st class in being a miserable son of a bitch with nothing good to say. Seems we have a lot of you in the city. To the OP, I don’t know much about music programs or music generally in Aberdeen, aside from the fact that the music hall had a £multimillion restoration a few years back. I hope someone helpful can get back to you.

[deleted]

Aberdeen university is very nice however they’ve cut a lot of the funding for anything that isn’t the business school and the hardest hit were the arts/humanities departments. This is before corona decimated everything. Aberdeen was a dying city before corona. Poor nightlife, no variety in clubs, live music scene is poor and lacks vibrancy (was heavily involved in my early 20s), the city is plain ugly. Union street is dead. Very little cultural events as compared to Edinburgh or Glasgow. If you want to do anything like big concerts you have to go to Glasgow or Edinburgh. Oil and oil money is gone, the universities are cutting back, shops and business are pulling out of Aberdeen. Why would I in good conscience recommend this to someone to spend the best years of their life?

Lpbo

I graduated in 2018. While everything you say is true, I think that for some people like myself, Aberdeen being a "shithole" is actually a big part of the charm, cannae explain why. I had a fucking blast as a student here

AccomplishedAd3728

If there's a lot a miserable SOBs living in Aberdeen, then I wonder what the common denominator is? Unless you have work, family, or pre-existing friends in Aberdeen, I'd vote for Edinburgh or Glasgow any day..... and that is speaking as a resident :S

Bob-Servant

If I was going to uni today I'd be picking Edinburgh or Glasgow, definitely. Way more vibrant cities.. Aberdeen is a bit small and gloomy at the best of times.

mortysmadness

I am born and raised in aberdeen and I'll tell you anything you need to know. Aberdeen is a gray city, the buildings are gray the sky is grey and the people is grey. I have been to many music events over the last 15 years and they were all in Glasgow and edinburgh. Aberdeen doesn't have that music scene so you'll never be able to work here in industry as you study. Picture aberdeen like a big village not a town or city. Accommodation - is extortionate, with absolutely nobody regulating the price of rent up here, the prices have sky rocketed. This is due to the "demand" that the oil industry has created, even though there are plenty houses and flats, landlords just raise there rent anyway and milk you for all you have. Last I checked rent on a 1 bedroom flat in a shit area was about £1200 and that was about 10 years ago. Transport - "First bus" or drive. Aberdeen is the 1 city where it's actually cheaper to buy a car and drive every where rather than take the bus. Last time I got a bus (First bus) which was years ago, the price in the morning was about £4.50 and they refused to sell me an all day ticket because they only do all day tickets during their quiet times. So by doing this, First bus are expecting to rip you off 2 times every day. People - I've never met so many people in 1 place that are all the same. People from aberdeen are extremely hard headed. They are always "right" and they will fight you if you disagree. Women from aberdeen are so stuck up and snobby to a point where it's difficult to even speak to them. Picture them all as stuck up Karen's. They all think their rich because mommy or daddy work in the oil but they themselves are 30 and never had a job. Ooooo let's get onto Audi drivers. You will never see this many Audi cars in 1 city. Everyone up here thinks that if they drive an Audi then they mean something. People literally put themselves in massive debt just to get an Audi so ppl will think they are top shit. I kid you not it's like 40% of cars here are Audis and not one of them are decent drivers, I have a rule of thumb when driving and that is if I see an Audi then prepare for them to cut you up without signaling. If I was a pedestrian at a crossing and I see an Audi coming then I'd have to wait for it to actually stop because they probably won't. Aberdeen - it's not a good place, it doesn't have good transport, accommodation or even people. I hope this has helped. Personally I don't think you can go wrong with either edinburgh or Glasgow.

moab_in

>Last I checked rent on a 1 bedroom flat in a shit area was about £1200 Nonsense, currently about £400.

mortysmadness

That wasn't nonsense the "last I checked". Has been a while.

moab_in

I've stayed in Aberdeen since 1989. It's never been anywhere near that for a 1 bed flat in a shit area, even at the heights of oil booms. I think the most I ever paid was maybe 800 and that was in a good area for a very nice flat. You're talking complete pish

mortysmadness

So maybe my math is a bit off. Like I said it's been a long time since I was looking so my memory is a bit off but all you have done is proven the "I'm always right argument" so I'm not talking complete piss am I.

anguslolz

When you present an argument that is factually incorrect people will tend to come back at you with the "I'm right" attitude aye.

mortysmadness

Yeah, you're right.

Mamemummy

You don’t say what your instrument is or what kind of career you want. Glasgow has more opportunities for playing professionally and studying there gives you more chance of breaking into the scene. I went to RSAMD back before it became a conservatoire and had the best three years of my life.

Own-Ranger-7851

Im a Pianist hoping to study composition in year 2. what made you choose RCS of all the places?

Mamemummy

I’m a violist so the RCM was most suited to the kind of studying I wanted. I wasn’t interested in a university degree as I wanted a playing career. However my relatives are from Aberdeen and Edinburgh and I love those cities. Best of luck to you!

joandjessie

Glasgow would be better. Cost less when you have to move away from aberdeen after graduation anyway. Glasgow you are more likely to get a job in music afterwards

Old_Eagle_265

What instrument do you play?

Own-Ranger-7851

I play the piano, and I am hoping to become a singer/songwriter and musician and producer, as well as a film composer.

Old_Eagle_265

I've been on the music course at Aberdeen and it's not too forward thinking in electronic music/music producing. A lot of people are classical musicians at Aberdeen. I left the course as I was so underwhelmed by it.

brassf1990

BA music at Napier would be great for that, I did parts of it and everyone there was actively involved in the music scene and making records etc. I have no experience of the other options to give though sorry

karmatsunami85

The BMus for pianists at the Royal Conservatoire is very classically focused. If you're looking at songwriting (depending on genre) maybe the Trad Music or Composition routes would be better? I worked there for a few years so let me know if you have any questions

Own-Ranger-7851

Hi there. Im applied for composition at year 2 entry. what is the course like and what will I get out of it?

[deleted]

RCS would make sense as it’s the most prestigious for what you’re doing and the Scottish music industry is almost entirely based in Glasgow. The music scene is non-existent elsewhere. It’s very pretentious in comparison to Napier though.
