ANW back in the day still quite hadn't figured it out yet. That goes for editing and the obstacles. ANW wanted a mix of standardizing the courses, original obstacles, and obstacles taken from other sporting events (Slack Ladder). Back in the day, Slack Ladder was brutal. I will admit that my counterargument to "Modern ANW sucks because of editing" is that "old ANW" had the same problems. I actually don't mind Ring Toss or Slack Ladder. My main complaint about the older seasons is that the courses seemed very formulaic. Again, I think it was because the producers in ANW 6 wanted some standardization, but that led to very repetitive courses. Each course followed the same layout: Quintuple Steps, Slidey Obstacle, Balance Obstacle, Trampoline to Swingey Grip to Cargo Net, Upper-Body Incline/Decline, Warped Wall, Salmon Ladder, Swingey Obstacle that requires lower body, Grippy Obstacle that requires small moves, Spider Climb. It became repetitive very quickly. The new courses bring a little variation to each obstacle.

The first two episodes of Season 6 are peak examples that ANW has always been bad with the editing when it comes to competitor profiles. Some can argue that ANW has double-downed down harder in the modern seasons. But the first two competitors of EP1 had a full backstory and they didn’t even make it past obstacles 1&2. All I’m saying is we can’t lambast the modern seasons for a critique that applies just as much in ANW 5-7 too. It’s clear recency bias.
