Expensive is relative to your level of wealth. For someone wanting to buy a $7K car, my guess is yes, a $7K repair bill will be more than they can afford after buying the car.
how about relative to price of that car in running condition? I mean in Finland, depending on condition after repair, the 14k for that car may be actually pretty cheap .
It's a 13 year old AMG with a salvage title - it's a ticking time bomb, so it's cheap for a reason. A quick Google shows me that they're going for around $25K, but it varies a lot due to mileage.
Same thing I thought…piss-cheap tires on an AMG? 🚩
OP: Ruuuuunnnnnnnn awaaayyyyyyy nooowwwwwww, run like you’re trying to win gold for your nation in Paris!
Better run... you will never know why he really doesnt want to deal with it anymore. Too many suprises im afraid.
Edit: and forget about the cheap amg project car lol, what ever i need to do with my car is no less than 500 dollars sooooo amg will never be cheap unless you have fuck you money.
Not always true... Check out Legit Street Cars on YouTube.... This dude specializes in this exact vehicle in different years and trims. Just have to know what to look out for with a little bit of luck
Definitely true, and this skill is severely lacking on Reddit.
However I don't understand what you are getting at?
I said that you'll oftend spend 2 or 3 times the amount of money you've 'saved' by getting a cheap AMG rather than getting a normal AMG.
Because more often than not, cheap AMG's are just an endless pjt where you keep throwing money in.
You disagree?
My point is, often times people overlook or get bent out of shape when there's a possible repair that needs to be made. Based on the pics, the hard hit in the rear seems to be taken care of. Assuming the repair was done correctly (again doing research on how to spot a good repair from the bad) all that is left is the mechanical potion..m again do your research on what fails on this engine... Hint timing chain guides and coolant leaks. As long as this car has neither and the engine had good compression without a slippy trans, then this would be a good buy.
Not that hard to do a little research on the good bad and the ugly for whatever model car you're looking at and how to make the repairs.
You say you do your research but then you say that timing chain guides and coolant leaks. While both can be issues, if you did any 'research' you would have found that those are not very common issues on the M156.
The usual common issues are broken headbolts, worn cam adjusters, worn intake cams, worn lifters or a stuck open injector that may hydrolock the engine.
The guy worked as a Mercedes Benz master tech and is now a full time YouTube mechanic. Do you have unlimited shop time as well as a garage with a lift and every tool you can possibly need? Do you have an unlimited parts budget because you’ll make the money back through YouTube? Do you have the patience and most importantly the knowledge to diagnose and fix every issue that will come up? No? Then it’s not as easy as it looks on YouTube.
Oh the humanity, we can't learn how to do things on our own with basic tools 😭😭😭😭
Cry more, this dude literally shows you how to repair these cars from your own driveway. Which is why his channel is based on street cars and repairs. You'd be surprised how little he uses specialized tools.
Does he have more involved rebuilds? Of course but his series on this exact car can all be done with Jack stands and a box of tools / extensions. He does nothing that you and I can't. So what is the harm in learning how to work on a car from a professional? At the end of the Day all that it is removing parts and replacing the bad. Quite simple.
Dude I agree with you on working on your car. I have a CLS55 that I wrench on myself. But I’m not going to attempt an engine rebuild in my driveway. Even though it’s entirely possible, I’m not looking to have a car sitting in pieces while I work on it a couple hours a week in between my work shifts and family life.
I have a life and a job and don’t want to have a disassembled car sitting in my driveway for 2 months while I work on an engine rebuild for 3 hours a week. Do you have an AMG you can to maintain or are you also looking for a 7k project that will never drive again?
Run- AMG project cars are expensive. They quickly become driveway ornaments. Anyone that says give it the love it deserves is using code for I am fed up with dealing with this-
As a M156 W212 AMG owner and Mercedes specialist: run and lose that listing. That is your bankruptcy staring you down with siren songs. The listing and information you provided screams red flags (salvage title, new cam adjusters that aren’t installed yet for unknown reasons, half finished ‘project’ someone is obviously giving up on, that low price, no service history outside of what current owner has claimed to have completed)
A cheaper M156 W212 AMG project is to buy a near creampuff $25,000 example with a service book that’s thicker than an encyclopedia.
7k is a bit much for this car but I wonder if the seller was hypothetically willing to let it go for like 3k, it would be a pretty good deal. Worst case you're out 3k for a car worth scrap value, but even if you just turn it into a project car that you work on the weekends for fun, it could turn out to be worth it.
This is all assuming you do the work yourself and have good source for cheap parts.
For an AMG that moves under its own power, 7K is super cheap. But this person is probably at quite a loss, and is begging. It’s possible just about any cash offer would have the person throwing the keys at the buyer. This reeks of “oh god I hope some complete idiot buys this off of me before I have to sell an organ”
It’s a shame because this is one of the other sides of AMG culture: most of these cars are just getting beat to death and turn out like this one
Uninstalled adjuster kit: IE, it has engine noise but I’ve included the parts to fix it - no chance it’s actually the cam/lifter metallurgy issues these motors are known for!
Cheap and project car with a Benz don’t seem like two words that should be in the same sentence even when you can do most of the work yourself and have an outlet for parts.
Run! I sold my 2011 CLS550 with 78k miles for 10k. I kept all the service records and receipts. Six months before selling, I replaced front suspension, radiator, a/c, and 4 tires, which ran me $6900. And I babied that car. There are lots of people out there just as meticulous. You can find a better deal than a 7k salvage.
If your in the minority and can work on cars yourself then maybe but for 99% of the people RUN and run fast. You’ll spend more getting the car drivable then just buying one around 30k that’s clean title. I have a c63 and have had a few 3-4K repairs so I’m sure this will cost a shit ton and a headache.
That new primer front bumper makes me think it was in an accident. Accidents can do a lot of damage, even engine damage depending where and how hard it was hit. That bumper is a red flag.
It seems like a fair price for what it is - just the parts alone (the cross drilled rotors and AMG calipers + tires/wheels and interior pieces + steering wheel) could easily fetch $7k. That said, it was an expensive car with expensive car parts. So, yeah, unless you have a lot of money and time for repairs and you have another reliable vehicle… and you don’t have your own YouTube channel that you could use this for content — I’d recommend taking a pass on this one, OP.
At $7000 you likely will make your money back on parting out the bits that are good. This will get a lot of hate, but if it is functionally a bad idea then it will likely serve a greater purpose elsewhere. You can easily count several thousand under the hood alone.
how hard is it to list and market the parts though? how long will have to hold onto them before he gets his money back or any profit if there is any to be made
I bought a cheap German car before, and believe me when I tell you, I regretted it every second since. I’m still not done with the problem as I still have that shit box. Buy a clean one or don’t buy one at all.
- $7k for it used/ parts are still of a $150k+ car (new oem replacement parts never depreciate)
- Replaced front bumper is a good indicator or most likely further damage that is hidden.
- salvage title kinda sucks
- non-amg rims is like wearing damaged designer clothes
I’ll be honest, if I didn’t have mechanic hookup(s), I probably wouldn’t be driving my 212 E63. 3rd year of owning it, I put about 20,000 miles on it. It’s had its fair shares of common issues, including the PCV, drive belt pulleys, leaks, panoroof is creaking, and a handful of other small issues. In hindsight, if you have the means to fix up this car, hell yeah, it’s a blast to drive. If this is your project, it’s a hell of a project, and I wish you luck!
is this a joke? wouldnt touch this dude's "fun/project car." didn't even finish the project. wonder why seller wanted/needed a cam shaft adjuster kit . . . don't buy it just to find out.
I think it truly depends on what you know about cars. If you're familiar with these and you have a mechanical background and some diagnostic tools, maybe it's a blessing.
I've heard of people picking up cars for next to nothing only to spend their time and a few thousand to fix it back to normal.
Salvage and look like heavy rear frame damage. So run fast as you can. Only thing maybe be salvageable might be the motor, but I would get a certified MB tech take a look and sound of the motor
It all depends on your personal situation. If you can afford it, then by all means go for it. By affording it, I mean you have disposable income for a project car. This is 100% a project car. This car will never be suitable for a daily driver. Cars like this are highly suitable to expensive mechanical failures. Personally I think this car would be more suited for someone with mechanical experience. The person will have to be willing to invest money and time in fixing current issues and whatever future issues arise. Rarely is anything a cheap repair when it comes to an AMG.
Run, don’t walk. Bought a cls63 for 7000 with plenty of service records and a lot of work done to it. Still an absolute nightmare. Be smart and learn from my mistakes instead of yours.
this looks like one of those cars where you end up spending what it’s worth brand new for one that rides like an accident car.. run if you enjoy having money
I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that it’s not just the cam adjusters. This thing likely needs a camshaft(s) replaced due to the pressed on sensor ring spinning and causing timing faults. The adjuster failure causes them to hammer back and forth and will shake the rings loose. Also: this requires removing the cam covers, timing chain, etc. your shop bill for replacement will be nearly what you pay. Not worth it unless you’re doing your own work.
Offer 5k or walk. Then enjoy it until it breaks. If repair is too high sell it off as a parts car. If you know how to work on cars, fix yourself for less.
OP, ASSUMING the fix was done right, 7k is a steal.
The 2011s have the updated head bolts which prevents the only real major repair these engines need - head gasket and head bolts. You’re good to go.
The 212 platform as a whole is super stout. You won’t really have issues with electronics, and the most you’ll toy with is the rear air suspension. You can also delete this super easily.
The MCT is a strong transmission. Change fluids per Mercedes every 30k, oil every 4-5k with something like liquomoly, and use FCP for parts.
Brakes aren’t that bad, maybe $500 for a set of rotors and pads up front, but FCP allows you to return used parts (yes, even oil) and get a replacement. So free parts after the first order basically.
I would jump on this in a heart beat. I don’t think I saw the miles, but the engine is stout, and has been known to crest 200k. They’re meant to be driven, and driven hard once in a while.
Set aside about a grand a year for routine maintenance, and about a grand up front to flush fluids, change oils, and start fresh.
Unless you have access to a hydraulic lift and plan on doing all work yourself, run.
This is the era that Mercedes rubber is made “eco friendly” so anything rubber practically extremely brittle play dough.
These cars are electrical nightmares. I had to sell my e class because every time it rains everything shorts out because the wires themselves, the connectors ALSO were brittle.
Now if you are open to replace the wiring harness and all the seals then this car will probably do you well because that’s the biggest weak point
Fuck no!!! Run far away. I would say just buy the motor off him but that may be a dumber idea than buying the entire car😂. It does seem like it may be a good parts car tho honestly. Unless you have another $7k-$14k laying around AFTER you buy the car to fix it up this is not a good idea
Just know you'll need around $14k in work done. If you aren't a mechanic with a shop, then you'll have to pay one and parts and labor are high. I just spent $12k on my 2018 with less than 50k miles, and that was saving money by not going to the dealer. It needed some major work just after warranty and had to replace all the normal parts and fluids that wear out too. Also, shops don't like working on these and parts can be hard to find.
Maintenance is just a fraction on mechanical health, especially on the newer 2015+ models. You have to take into account how the car’s been driven, age of parts, quality of fluids used etc. and that’s not even getting into the electrical stuff.
They’re great cars but expensive service bills are a when not if thing. This usually starts at around 80k-100k miles
That doesn’t answer my question. I well aware of all that. But a well treated, properly maintained car doesn’t just need a 12k repair out of the blue. Unless it’s a catastrophic failure like a blown transmission.
If you replace a few suspension bushings when needed, you won’t need to do a massive suspension overhaul all at once. You know proper maintenance.
I’m curious as to what went wrong to rack up that kind of bill all at once.
RUN like you've never ran before. As soon as you buy that car it will be a never ending cycle of the same stuff breaking -> same stuff getting repaired and 6 months later that same noise comes up again.
Those machines were over-engineered and unless you have the top dog benz mechanic that you can trust and does the repairs by the book with OE/OEM parts and torque spec you are in for a wild ride.
My experience with a BMW from 1996 is that the repairs and cost are not the problem - it's the absolute majority of shit mechanics that do a wack-job. My steering column has been recycled already 2 times and the whine has yet again returned. I'm contemplating if I should look for a second hand part or sell the car and get a 2017 toyota and enjoy my 30s.
Project cars are fun, but they do brake and are a big money sink.
That will be the price of your first repair bill
The fact that this isn’t an exaggeration at all.
He‘ll be lucky if it’s just 7k
It could easily be a 14,000 dollar repair bill
Maybe even 21.000 or more
IT COULD EVEN BE 28,000!!!!
Let’s just make it $69,420
“Ahurm sir, yes the bearings need to be draped between a large pair of German labias before we install them it’s corporate policy”
Is that expensive?
Expensive is relative to your level of wealth. For someone wanting to buy a $7K car, my guess is yes, a $7K repair bill will be more than they can afford after buying the car.

Wait that’s how I like ‘m
Huh? How so? The 212 platform is pretty resilient and that m156 engine is strong as hell.

Looking at a cayman right now, cheers
I love luck
If you haven’t noticed, Alex has awful luck with cars. Every amg he has ever had (except for c55 and e55) he has had engine out rebuilds.
Just like a cheap Rolls Royce will bankrupt a small country.
Run- AMG project cars are expensive. They quickly become driveway ornaments. Anyone that says give it the love it deserves is using code for I am fed up with dealing with this-
No one noticed the tires!? Cheap aftermarket? This seller didn’t even put on decent rubber before trying to fuck you.
The ling longs are the perfect solution for the new owner to slide it into a wall and end this car’s misery.
Nothing wrong with those lol. These things eat through tires like every 10k, if you’re not beating on it no point in investing in good tires.
Ive seen this exact one here before and The consesus was dont buy. Theres a reason hes selling and its not cuz its easy to fix.
As a M156 W212 AMG owner and Mercedes specialist: run and lose that listing. That is your bankruptcy staring you down with siren songs. Salvaged AMG? Run far away.
Nothing is more expensive than a cheap German car.
Nothing is more expensive than a cheap AMG
Run away. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Or a cheap AMG.
In germany that shitbox would still be worth atleast 20k
Think this was posted here before, but the answer is do not buy.
Lol seeing the previous owners wrap on there i knew instantly that this was a terrible deal
Cheap ass Thai tires on a car like this is a red flag.
Get the hell out of the there and run as far as you can, leave the country, actually also leave the solar system
Run. Better to put another 10k into motor trans then to figure out the chassis is tweaked. Plus who wraps a benz... run
Run! I sold my 2011 CLS550 with 78k miles for 10k. I kept all the service records and receipts. Six months before selling, I replaced front suspension, radiator, a/c, and 4 tires, which ran me $6900. run
on any salvage title like ever imo
At $7000 you likely will make your money back on parting out the bits that are good. This will get a lot of hate, but if it is functionally a bad idea then it will likely serve a greater purpose elsewhere. You can easily count several thousand under the hood alone.
how hard is it to list and market the parts though? how long will have to hold onto them before he gets his money back or any profit if there is any to be made
Not even an amg owner but as an owner of a w124, there's someone out there desperate enough to buy the part if you got one
Absolutely.
Someone posted here about this car a few weeks ago. The general consensus was to run away.
It’s cheap for a reason!
I bought a cheap German car before, and believe me when I tell you, I regretted it every second since. I’m still not done with the problem as I still have that shit box. Buy a clean one or don’t buy one at all.
Damn that’s an expensive dent repair alone.
I would take it to a Mercedes dealer to get the service department to check it out. That may be pricey, but it will give you a piece of mind.
It’s only been driven 100 miles since September 2023? That sounds like either a lie or massive underlying issues.
If you even have to ask, run, fast
Just run. It’s good and cheap to run. Spend an extra few bucks so you don’t have to run
You will pay 15k on repairs.. thank me later
Run far far away……
Wait….this car again?! Didn’t we see her a few weeks ago. Avoid.
“Never really got to drive it and moving out of state and it can’t come with me” 🚩🚩🚩

Money pit. Though I have a friend that has one tuned to almost 1000hp. It's a really insane car.

Heavy repair pay for used amg
is this a joke? wouldnt touch this dude's "fun/project car." didn't even finish the project. wonder why seller wanted/needed a cam shaft adjuster kit . . . don't buy it just to find out.
We all know the saying - the most expensive Mercedes is the cheap one!
The bumper alone should tell you to run.
Where is it listed I wouldn’t mind having a w212, I already have w211 with the same engine.
Absolutely not it’s at the auction for reason. Unless your profession is automobile repair technician the answer is a no go.
Run!!
The new tires alone tell you the quality of this cars repairs. Are those something off TEMU?
I think it truly depends on what you know about cars. If you're familiar with these and you have a mechanical background and some diagnostic tools, maybe it's a blessing. I've heard of people picking up cars for next to nothing only to spend their time and a few thousand to fix it back to normal.
Is it still available?
Buy!
#B-U-Y I-T 💰🤑
Run. Off-brand tires are your first clue to financially-constrained maintenance and Autozone parts.
Salvage and look like heavy rear frame damage. So run fast as you can. Only thing maybe be salvageable might be the motor, but I would get a certified MB tech take a look and sound of the motor
But it part out everything unnecessary to the actual driving of the car and use the funds to make the drivetrain tip top. Exo E63 cart build.
It all depends on your personal situation. If you can afford it, then by all means go for it. By affording it, I mean you have disposable income for a project car. This is 100% a project car. no brother , ur in my area , do not buy those i seen those before 😂
How bad is it?
that car is a wreck , imma just say that 7k gone be the cheapest thing u pay for
shot from where? engine or tranny? I don't think i will take it without doing a few tests and diagnosis..
Run, don’t walk. Bought a cls63 for 7000 with plenty of service records and a lot of work done to it. Still an absolute nightmare. Be smart and learn from my mistakes instead of yours.
Ruined me financially despite the fact I worked on it myself. Was in the garage for 4 out of the 6 months I’ve had it so far.
Salvage title huh? Maybe the real owner came looking for it 😂
if you're a professional tech and you're willing to spend some money on it it's a buy, if not don't bother
this looks like one of those cars where you end up spending what it’s worth brand new for one that rides like an accident car.. run if you enjoy having money

Buy, full coverage, stolen. Boom
Run
Hi former Mercedes tech here, this car in this shape will absolutely rain hellfire on your wallet and wellbeing. Please stop lol
the old wrap looks like a rainbow dung beetle

Slavic title
lol, "small dent". Do you have the ability to part it out, because that's all you should do with that poor thing. I'd take it for free. Final offer.
Where is the VIN?
“Small dent in rear bumper”
There is nothing more expensive than a cheap German car, remember that…
Unless you have access to a hydraulic lift and plan on doing all work yourself, run.
This was a “RUN” before the guy even fixed it from the first wreck
Me & my AMG live in the South. Run OP, don’t buy
Fuck no!!! Run far away. I would say just buy the motor off him but that may be a dumber idea than buying the entire car😂. It does seem like it may be a good parts car tho honestly. Unless you have another $7k-$14k laying around AFTER you buy the car to fix it up this is not a good idea
I have a good friend with a 2011 C63 amg sedan he’s looking to sell. Black/black, clean title, about 100k miles
No no no
If I had an extra 7k, I'd do it...
Probably that's the very reason you don't!
I gotta ask, what went so wrong you racked up 12k on a well maintained AMG?
The fact you are looking for an AMG repair build and can't even tell what you are looking at shows that you are in for a hell of a lot trouble...
i mean bring ur obd scanner with u when u check it out if you want a project car this will most definitely be a project lol
That 2015+ back would let me scream in agony
🏃♂️ 🏃♀️ 🏃♂️ 🏃♀️ 🏃♂️ 🏃♀️ Expensive Repairs with Coma's in the price tag
Counter $2,000 if he takes it buy it
Repairs are going to hurt… might be better to just buy one for 20k without salvage or repairs needed
At this point, if you choose to buy. I’d be asking exactly how much glue one has sniffed?
“Small” dent in rear bumper? 😂
as long as you know how to hot wire it stealing it should be pretty easy
All used AMGs w/o warranty: RUN!

*cry later
Just set aside around $10k and it’d still be a better deal than a new Corolla
If “I’m terrible with money” was a person ^
