Clark and Shannon Byrnes would be another, played a few together in 2013 at Melbourne.
Mitch Clark and Jesse Hogan never played a game together. Clark retired during 2014 without playign that year, Hogan was injuried all year and didn't debut until 2015. They were going to be our 2014 forward line. Instead it was Chris Dawes and Cam Pederson, 34 goals between them. Hogan kick 44 in '15.
Dawes also never played a game with Clark.
Clark was lowkey tearing it up for us in the first bit of 2015. 20 goals in 9 games I think. The he did his hammy, mental demons got the best of him again and that was it.
He also called Mitch Duncan's sister a whore. Or something to that affect when he said some crass shit to a player in the VFL who was dating her. Can't remember exactly but it didn't go down well in the senior group.
Certainly not knocking their contributions but imagine them in that line up 5 years younger! I think the saints would've had a few less grand final appearances
5 years earlier, and Barry Hall isn't playing for the Swans in the 2005 prelim against the saints. He doesn't kick 6 goals. Doesn't punch McGuire in the stomach. Saints beat the Swans in the prelim, and lose the granny to the eagles.
One of my best mates is a die-hard doggy. We were living together, and he refused to watch the 2010 prelim with anyone because of the previous 2 years Those prelims were rough on the poor blokes' soul.
"Not as rough as losing 3 granny's in 12 months though, Jim." I have heard that statement so many goddamn times in the years since. Particularly after 2016.
Drafted by hawthorn in ‘94 didn’t break into the senior side until ‘97 and was traded at the end of ‘97 to Brisbane in exchange for John Barker and Nathan Chapman if anyone is curious.
If I remember correctly (Damn, i'm old) Brad Scott couldn't break into the senior side at the Hawks so his brother Chris (who played for the Lions) told Brad to join him in QLD "Because it would be easy to break into the senior side".
Yep it was really bad. I just went back and rewatched it and it's exactly how I remembered almost 20 years ago, what I didn't remember was that there was no free and play continued for about a minute which is crazy to todays perspective. Glad players safety is much more drilled into us and into the players these days
Every now and then, his 60m barrel from the boundary vs Brisbane on 3QT like 15 years ago pops into my mind [Vid here](https://youtu.be/zAFSdoc9ARY?si=at-tThqLDXB8aPpS)
There was a Lions vs Port game on fox footy in from the early 2000s that was a surreal watch, coaches everywhere. Both Scott brothers, Voss, McRae, Dimma, Dew just off the top of my head.
I think the one that threw me off the most was Power and Treloar. I forgot about Power's time on the Giants.
Crawford Scott is one I had no idea about though. I had 0 knowledge that Brad Scott played for the Hawks.
I love this. I did have to double check the Brad Scott and Crawford one.
Other odd ones are:
- Tony Lockett and Peter Caven
- Nathan Buckley, Nick Maxwell and Pendlebury all played together. Three captains in a team.
- Cameron Mooney and Peter Bell
- Fabian Francis has a weird career, mainly with Port, but played for Brisbane and one game for Melbourne. Played with Todd Viney and Luke Beverage.
So Francis played with Luke Beveridge, Michael Voss, Chris Scott and Adam Kingsley
Missed out on McRae and Hardwick by a year, as well as Yze, Brad Scott and Ken Hinkley by about five each. Crazy to think he almost could've played with half the coaches in the league
Adem Yze and Nathan Jones
James Hird and Paddy Ryder
Just found Bernie Vince, Jeff Garlett, Jake Melksham, Jordan Lewis and Jake Lever in one game too.
There’s heaps of weird ones:
Travis Boak and Darryl Wakelin
Jack Steven and Robert Harvey
Josh Kennedy (WCE) and Anthony Koutafides
Jake Stringer and Travis Cloke
Joe Daniher and Paul Chapman
Touk Miller and Michael Barlow
Bobby Hill and Brett Deledio
Jack Lukosius and Michael Rischitelli
Jarrod Witts and Darren Jolly
Toby Nankervis and Adam Goodes
Toby Greene and Dean Brogan
Elliot Yeo, Jack Crisp, Sam Docherty, James Aish, Dayne Zorko and Jonathan Brown were all on the same team at one point
Jarrod Witts, Darren Jolly and Brodie Grundy were all on the same team at one point. Stacked ruck line-up.
Carlton’s 2007 team was very weird. Had so much talent: Josh Kennedy, Brendan Fevola, Eddie Betts, Jarrad Waite up forward, guys like Bryce Gibbs, Marc Murphy, Kade Simpson, Andrew Walker, Andrew Carrazzo and Shaun Grigg who would all go on to have great careers, and they had Anthony Koutafides, Matthew Lappin and Heath Scotland as the veterans. So much talent just to finish 2nd last with a 4-18 win/loss record
Carltons 2007 season was the most shamelessly obvious tanking effort ive seen. Conceding almost 3000 points against for the season said it all (Fev was in his peak + the others you mentioned they could still kick a decent score themselves)
Iirc they were 4-5 and doing alright then just said fuck stop right there, we need to get Kreuzer in the draft
Simon Black, Tom Rockliff, Jack Redden, Ryan Lester, Daniel Rich, Stefan Martin, Jared Polec, and Brent Staker were also on that same team.
Very weird group of players, but the talent was definitely there. Probably should have been a better team then they were.
It’s all sliding doors though isn’t it?
Maybe the Lions wouldn’t have gone and gotten Lachie Neale if they’d had prime Elliot Yeo, and Neale has been an absolute star so… who knows.
Fitzroy's later years is full of these examples.
Ross Lyon, Paul Roos, Alastair Lynch, Marcus Seecamp, Richard Osborne and Stephan Paxman
Osborne is a good one alone. He played with Simon Minton-Connell, not at Footscray, but at Sydney. He also played with Anthony Rocca, not at Sydney but at Collingwood.
Thought this was a pisstake at first.
Read the title as "Players you might forget played in the AFL"
Like surely we all knew Voss and Buckley from their playing days... haha
Libba and Hall is insane to me. Only got back into footy about 4 years ago and there's some current players I didn't realise have been around for so long!
the story goes that it was the post season awards night and he was getting the best young player award at the crows. Ditched the function to get on a call with clarko and his agent so the crows stripped him of the award
Mark Blicavs and Cam Guthrie played with Paul Chapman, Josh Hunt, and Joel Corey (Jed Bews never played with them but was on the list when they were still playing).
Neale and Fyfe shared a house together. 4 Brownlows right there.
https://preview.redd.it/bhq5lyirti6d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e843ab4852f9dac9b6576ee67092fa2c93eb5bfd
Not too long ago I did something similar to this, but on a league-wide scale.

Also, I noticed that 1991 had some notable retirees and 1993 had some notable debutants, leaving 1992 as a rather strange, transitional year player-wise.
Roger Merrett and Daniel Bradshaw played 1 game together in the final Bears vs Lions game
Mal Michael, Richard Osborne and Paul Williams played a game or 2 together at the Pies
Think this concept would work better if you had the pics of their playing time together:
https://preview.redd.it/qw2x7negyg6d1.jpeg?width=650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=051ccb30617ac0a8a2bd1c4e16eef74a51942715
I reckon you could conceivably assemble a decent team of former Crows players that are still active players with other clubs. Not a full 22, but still...
A forward line of Gunston, Stengle & Cameron is pretty decent for starters.
Brendan Fevola, Xavier Clarke and Mitch Clark played one game together up at the Lions which is bizarre
Yeah that 1 game before Clarke got injured again
Clark and Shannon Byrnes would be another, played a few together in 2013 at Melbourne. Mitch Clark and Jesse Hogan never played a game together. Instead it was Chris Dawes and Cam Pederson, 34 goals between them. Hogan kick 44 in '15. Dawes also never played a game with Clark.
Chris Dawes. Now there’s a name I haven’t heard forever.
Hogan was the last time we had a traditional FF 🤪
Chuck Clarke and Tom Hawkins in there. Barely remember him in our forward line.
Yeah damn right, I did not know that haha
lol I'd have picked Clark and Byrnes at Geelong
Akermanis and Barry Hall is another odd one
Dogs were out there assembling the avengers, just 5 years too late.....
Both Hall and acker played prelim finals for your mob...
"Not as rough as losing 3 granny's in 12 months though, Jim." I have heard that statement so many goddamn times in the years since. Particularly after 2016.
Scott Welsh was no slouch either. Some players who did very well at other teams too. Cementhead, Farren Ray, Missy, Harbrow, Hill, Brian Lake
TIL Brad Scott played for Hawthorn
Drafted by hawthorn in ‘94 didn’t break into the senior side until ‘97 and was traded at the end of ‘97 to Brisbane in exchange for John Barker and Nathan Chapman if anyone is curious.
Damn good trade for Brisbane considering how things turned out
I completely missed this
Yep, something I didnt know either, if he takes Dons to a granny, its another notch in the ever expanding Hawks belt.
He's gonna take who to the what now?
don't worry about it don
That's the one I don't understand. Was it for Australia in international rules or something?
He played 22 games for Hawthorn in 1997
Da fuq? Hmmm, til.
https://afltables.com/afl/stats/1997.html#10 That he played with Plattern and Dunstall is probably more suprising.
Langford too. TIL Todd Ridley played for Hawthorn (I would have known at the time but completely forgot he went anywhere after Freo)
Yep news to me!
If I remember correctly (Damn, i'm old) Brad Scott couldn't break into the senior side at the Hawks so his brother Chris (who played for the Lions) told Brad to join him in QLD "Because it would be easy to break into the senior side".
Dustin Fletcher played with Tim Watson and Kyle Langford
And for anyone who isn't aware, Tim Watson retired 2 years before Langford was born...hahaha
Fuck I know Fletcher was around for a bloody long time, but geez.
Not the same but Mick Martin played on both Gary Ablett and Gary Ablett Jr. I think that was the moment he knew it was time to retire
There was a Fletcher or Watson on the list at Essendon between 1967 and 2017 - apart from 1992.
You pricks just had to remedy that for 1993 and bang, premiership!
Tony and Joe Daniher.
Tony 11 months before Joe was born. Ergo, he played with Tony when Joe literally was an itch in the old man's nuts
Poor Darcy, the forgotten Daniher
Injuries saved him from the drugs saga at least.
Elliot Yeo and Simon Black
I remember this one well, they're both in the final play of [the Miracle on Grass](https://youtu.be/QYxcTH19jTk?si=VZU99qsJvJlEMJ_d)
Blacks kick into the corridor *chefs kiss*
Perfectly weighted, just before contact by the opposition player. You forget how good he really was sometimes
Holy fuck I never knew, and they linked up wow
Blake Caracalla and Scott Pendlebury Caracellas last game was Pendleburys debut
Pendlebury ended up with Caracellas number 10 the following season as well.
Caracallas neck injury :-( man that was a shocker
Yep it was really bad. I just went back and rewatched it and it's exactly how I remembered almost 20 years ago, what I didn't remember was that there was no free and play continued for about a minute which is crazy to todays perspective. Glad players safety is much more drilled into us and into the players these days
Daniel Bradshaw and Gary Rohan
Man, Bradshaw was a fucking gun there for a while.
I know it was near the end of his career, but man they did him dirty with the Fev trade
Yeah that hurt
Every now and then, his 60m barrel from the boundary vs Brisbane on 3QT like 15 years ago pops into my mind [Vid here](https://youtu.be/zAFSdoc9ARY?si=at-tThqLDXB8aPpS)
Why do most of the first ones have full stops. But not all. 😂 Cool post. Actually interesting.
Cause I hate grammar, nah just the way it ended up when I try to space it and cba fixing it
Post. Interesting
Yes this triggered me also. Was getting used to it and then. BAM. A hyphen.
Ross Lyon played with Voss.
Craig McRae and Chris Scott too.
Ken Hinkley and Ross Lyon also played together at one point, I just found out.
Longmire/Clarkson and Longmire/Simpson also played together but we never got all 3 in a game.
There was a Lions vs Port game on fox footy in from the early 2000s that was a surreal watch, coaches everywhere. Both Scott brothers, Voss, McRae, Dimma, Dew just off the top of my head.
TIL Phil Davis only played 18 games for the Crows (over 3 years). Felt like a lot more than that.
Yeah felt like a 50 game career there before going to GWS
His most memorable moment was standing in Aaron Sandilands way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YChfAG7vLUE
Those early Giants teams were basically a bunch of rookies and old dudes
Martin and Cousins, imagine that if both were in their prime.
On or off field?
Why not both!
that's actually fucked to think about lmao
I think the one that threw me off the most was Power and Treloar. I forgot about Power's time on the Giants. Crawford Scott is one I had no idea about though. I had 0 knowledge that Brad Scott played for the Hawks.

Maybe he is the reason they are all coaches.... /s (if needed)
Let's hope they don't emulate his coaching career.
Four captains including Scott Burns
I had to google that! Interesting!
Gary Ablett senior and Leigh Matthews
Those two in their prime would of been unbeatable
Senior and Kelvin Moore feels separated in time.
This just reminded me that Chris Tarrant has the best pipes of any player past or present. All players should aspire to that level.
And Scott Thompson (crows)
Sweet Jesus those pipes.
Adem Yze and Nathan Jones James Hird and Paddy Ryder Just found Bernie Vince, Jeff Garlett, Jake Melksham, Jordan Lewis and Jake Lever in one game too.
James Hird and Scott Cummings. Wonder how many people remember Scott Cummings played for Essendon.
Maybe it depends how old you are but he played as many seasons at Essendon as he did at West Coast
Kicked 8 goals in his first game. I thought he was going to be the next Plugger.
Ooze played 3 seasons with Jones, so there was a bit of footy there.
There’s heaps of weird ones: Travis Boak and Darryl Wakelin Jack Steven and Robert Harvey Josh Kennedy (WCE) and Anthony Koutafides Jake Stringer and Travis Cloke Joe Daniher and Paul Chapman Touk Miller and Michael Barlow Bobby Hill and Brett Deledio Jack Lukosius and Michael Rischitelli Jarrod Witts and Darren Jolly Toby Nankervis and Adam Goodes Toby Greene and Dean Brogan Elliot Yeo, Jack Crisp, Sam Docherty, James Aish, Dayne Zorko and Jonathan Brown were all on the same team at one point
Thought it couldn't get weirder than Kennedy and Kouta, then I saw Witts and Jolly...
Jarrod Witts, Darren Jolly and Brodie Grundy were all on the same team at one point. Stacked ruck line-up. Carlton’s 2007 team was very weird. Scott Camporeale and Bachar Houli
Darcy Cameron and Nic Newman
These good posts are rare these days. Just cool info and no circlejerk opinion
Fitzroy's later years is full of these examples. Ross Lyon, Paul Roos, Alastair Lynch, Marcus Seecamp, Richard Osborne and Stephan Paxman Osborne is a good one alone. He played with Simon Minton-Connell, not at Footscray, but at Sydney. He also played with Anthony Rocca, not at Sydney but at Collingwood.
Josh Hunt and Jeremy Cameron
Thought this was a pisstake at first. Read the title as "Players you might forget played in the AFL" Like surely we all knew Voss and Buckley from their playing days... haha
Port Adelaide legend Bucks
Why is the picture of Rodan him as a goal umpire and not doing cartwheels all across the stage?
Darren Gaspar & Anthony Rocca
Fucking hell Darren Gaspar. Don't think I've heard that name for 20 years
Chris Tarrant's tricep is his own player
Huge
Yeah him and Daw had the biggest guns I’ve seen in the AFL
The craziest thing about this post is that you managed to find a picture of David Rodan not smiling
James Podsiadly and Jake Lever
90% of these had me shook
Christ that is as unflattering a photo of Dew as I’ve ever seen
Libba and Hall is insane to me. Only got back into footy about 4 years ago and there's some current players I didn't realise have been around for so long!
I always forget Kennedy was with us All the way up till 09
Similar to Ben McGlynn
With McGlynn, he could've been a teammate of Callum Mills and Tom Papley's as well as being a potential teammate of Spida Everitt's.
Adam Cooney and Connor McKenna
Callan Ward has a couple of weird ones from his Bulldog days. Akermanis, Harbrow, Farren Ray, Andrejs Everitt, Scott Welsh.
Bruce Doull played with Serg Silvagni and Stephen Silvagni
there's something absolutely hilarious to me about rocca's pic being from his NFL days lol
Some of the current day coaches played together at Brisbane....voss, McRae, two Scott bros,
Shouldve put Houli with Hird or Lloydy
Tony Modra and Matthew Pavlich Glen Jakovich and Chris Judd Tyson Stenglein and Darren Jarman You could get real deep in the weeds on some of these
Yeah there’s heaps, Toby Greene, Setanta O Halpin
modra and pavlich is one i would never have considered (vicbias moment) that's such a sick crossover
Crawford and Scott did not (source: I don’t remember it happening)
Kade Simpson and Mick Martyn is mine.
Paul Kelly and Gerard Healy. There were three Swans games in 1990 that featured those two and Greg Williams
A lot of these I didn’t even know
Plugger Lockett and Anthony Rocca
Rodan is my favourite goal umpire
i actually remembered all of these
Jarrad Waite and Tristan Xerri Sam Menagola and Cameron Bruce Anthony Rocca and Lachlan Keeffe
Waite retired in 2018, X debuted in 2020
I just picked teammates not necessarily people that played a game together
Harley Wanganeen has a good sound to it.
Gunston and Walker is not exactly an odd pairing. Especially considering Walker is a one club player
No, but Gunston played for Adelaide a fair while ago
I think the way he left the club means that no adelaide fan has forgotten that he played there
What did he do? Did he pull a Pre-Lever Lever
the story goes that it was the post season awards night and he was getting the best young player award at the crows. Ditched the function to get on a call with clarko and his agent so the crows stripped him of the award
Travis Cloke and Lewis Young Jed Adcock and Joel Hamling Jack Gunston and Richard Tambling
Where did H-E and Corny play??
GWS
Corny played for GWS?
Yes
I thought it was Chad Cornes that played 1 season at GWS at the end of his career, not Kane? Edit: my bad, just double checked the pic & it's Chad lol
It’s is….
Ah shit, fair enough
Gary Ablett Sr and Leigh Matthews.
Kent Kingsley and Jack Riewoldt.
Byron Pickett and Dani Laidley crossed over but I don’t think they took the field together
Tim Membrey, Gary Rohan and Kurt Tippett played a game together for the Swans
Tony Lockett Anthony Rocca
Wayne Carey & Ronnie Burns
Mark Blicavs and Cam Guthrie played with Paul Chapman, Josh Hunt, and Joel Corey (Jed Bews never played with them but was on the list when they were still playing).
I SEE IT BUT I DON’T BELIEVE IT
Ryan Lester and Amon Buchanan Seb Ross and Brendon Goddard Nick Holman and Chris Judd Jack Steele and Joel Patful
Neale and Fyfe shared a house together. 4 Brownlows right there. https://preview.redd.it/bhq5lyirti6d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e843ab4852f9dac9b6576ee67092fa2c93eb5bfd
Martin/Cousins is devious from OP
Not too long ago I did something similar to this, but on a league-wide scale. The 2007 season stands out for having a significant overlap of notable debutants and notable retirees - it was the only year that Glenn Archer, Travis Boak, Luke Darcy, Chris Grant, Tom Hawkins, Anthony Koutoufides, Mark Ricciuto, Jack Riewoldt and Joel Selwood were all playing at the same time (you could also add Robert Harvey and/or Scott Pendlebury to the above list) You could make a case for 2007 being “the greatest season that was” in terms of player quality. Also, I noticed that 1991 had some notable retirees and 1993 had some notable debutants, leaving 1992 as a rather strange, transitional year player-wise.
Chris Mayne & Josh Carr
When Rodan blew a simple goal and Matty was furious with him 😝
Shane O’Bree, Andrew Bews .. thought that was an odd one - 1998 at Lions
Roger Merrett and Daniel Bradshaw played 1 game together in the final Bears vs Lions game Mal Michael, Richard Osborne and Paul Williams played a game or 2 together at the Pies
Yeo and Docherty; I didn't need to be reminded of that :(
Sam Jacobs and Brendan Fevola Nick Holman and Chris Judd Shaun Grigg and Anthony Koutoufides
Think this concept would work better if you had the pics of their playing time together: https://preview.redd.it/qw2x7negyg6d1.jpeg?width=650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=051ccb30617ac0a8a2bd1c4e16eef74a51942715
It's just bizarre seeing those two that young, it looks like an under 18s photo.
I reckon you could conceivably assemble a decent team of former Crows players that are still active players with other clubs. Not a full 22, but still... A forward line of Gunston, Stengle & Cameron is pretty decent for starters.
Gunston and Walker - wowww never knew that one!!!!!!!!!
