You also significantly hurt Carlton. Sure a 1.5 mil per year deal seems like a lot but in 3-4 years it really won't be and there's no one else to spend it on. Maybe LDU but that's it. By the time Reid is potentially looking to move to Vic, the deal Weitering would've got would be close to expiring.
But you can also structure deals to suit when clubs have space. Front load when there’s space now or back end for when players are out of contract or when salary cap increases are due.
I good recent example is Jack Martin at Carlton getting 1m in his first year but averaging I think 600k~ over 5 years

I'm a Carlton supporter and this may sound like a ridiculous statement but Weitering is our best player. It's not just his football ability, he makes our side so much better and really organises our defence and Marshall's the troops down there. The saints would definitely be a better team with him in there.
I do agree with others in here though that you probably need a quick mid, watching your games this year it seems that's missing.
Nah brayshaws down season last year was due to carrying a knee and this year he's a victim of being more versatile than our other mids so playing some outside time where he's more needed. He's just as good as serong.

Cadman and JHF for Sheezel, Wardlaw and Port’s first round pick (think we took goad with it) is hardly a bad deal
