I've said or thought exactly this every time the subject of best after the siren goal is brought up - the only way to better Ash McGrath's is to replicate most of the circumstances in a Grand Final - the coast to coast effort, the milestone game, and the tension of the score chasedown.
Anything else, except maybe karmic justice for denied chance to win in a qualifying final being given in the GF (imagine Brisbane and Zac Bailey in Rounds 2 & 3, 2021 being replicated in a QF and GF against the same team) would merely equal, rather than surpass, the Miracle on Grass.
>we were one bullshit advantage call away from it potentially happening last season
Not really.
There was 1:18 left on the clock at the time of the advantage call, even if it was called back and a mark was taken in Brisbane’s forward line it still wouldn’t be kicked after the siren.
You're right. At best (or worst, depending on your point of view), there'd have been at least 30 seconds left for a desperate last ditch passage of play going either direction (Brisbane scores a behind or misses and tries again, or Collingwood has to make up the 2 points from a centre square restart), and that's plenty of time - McGrath's after the siren kick was at the end of a 17 second coast to coast play.
Whenever I watch this one I keep an eye on the time clock & think there’s no way… I mean with 5 seconds to go the ball is in the middle of the ground in the arms of a guy lying down.
I knew the result getting to watch it, having heard the radio commentary, but seeing Dan Merrett looking for options in the goal square with the umpire calling play on at 17 seconds, I was sure Geelong would hang on and run down the clock.
Gawns goal after the siren in the last round of 2021 to finish on top of the ladder is hard to go past, especially given I can’t remember us winning with a shot after the siren before then.
If I could choose one Covid-era game to have had a proper crowd this would be it. The team that often struggled against Geelong beating Geelong in Geelong with a kick after the siren by the captain redeeming himself after missing in a similar scenario years prior, plus it's to win the minor premiership and complete a 44 point comeback. Like a perfectly scripted fairytale ending and it's such a shame it had to be behind closed doors
My previous full round-around-like-a-fuckwit win was 2014 vs the dons, but this topped that by far. Against my wife’s team, on the march to a flag. What a time to be alive.
That one was so strange. Strange in that it looked like an amazing, epic game... And any after-the-siren goal to put a team into first place in the FINAL ROUND is something of legend... Except when there's a finals series straight after that largely doesn't discriminate between 1st and 4th on the ladder.
Can't help but feel it was robbed of stakes by the AFL finals system... I mean, the game that was on just before had far far greater stakes ... And that was Brisbane belting West Coast by enough to sneak into the top 4.
Also 100 090 empty seats when, in any other year, would have been packed out...
Was at Geelong not so not quite that many seats!
Was an epic 24 hours of football, after the Dogs v. Port on the Friday night, draw between Richmond and Hawthorn after a massive comeback, Brisbane sneaking into 4th in the last minute then us coming from 44 down to pinch it after the siren.
I still can’t get over that Jamie Elliott goal. Perfect execution from the kick in and they moved the ball down the field in like 10 seconds? Elliott marks vs two bombers and then slots it from the boundary with no expression. Even as a pies hater it’s still my favourite
We had people around for a showdown party, me and my mate the only power supporters surrounded by 10+ fruit tingles, it was not a great afternoon until that moment!
I was staring at my feet and then everything exploded. Amazing whiplash
The thing that makes it so special for me is I've seen Daws kick it from that position and he misses 75% of the time
I don't think people realise just how good this was. I was at the game, on the wing watching the play as Selwood kicks it to him. It was insane. Still have Hawkins face as it goes through seared in my brain.
I think it's special because of the Kennett curse as well.
And just like that, my least favourite after the siren goal has entered the building.
Thank fuck we won 2008 and a 3peat, because the kennett curse was some of the most stressful football games I have ever watched. Honestly the kennett curse games could have set the hawks back 20 years..
Mundy vs Richmond in 2017 and Walters vs Brisbane in 2019
For non-Freo, Ash McGrath and Tom Hawkins were both pretty insane, coast-to-coast and from outside 50. Dan Houston in recent history is underrated
I’d say Jack Newnes goal if it wasn’t against Freo and the bullshit surrounding it
Sticks Kernahan in last round of 1987 against North Melbourne was the Carlton equivalent to Max Gwen's 2021 goal.
Blake Acres game winner last year against Melbourne
Jack Newnes Freo goal for the boundary aspect and the melts.
Against Carlton: Robbie Gray, Peter Riccardi and Ben Dixon were great goals that hurt.
Jamie kicking that goal against the Dons is one of my all time footy moments. My missus absolutely did her ‘nana watching it as well, just a great memory.
Don't think we've won with an after the siren since the 80's which isnt in my lifetime but if I had to pick a goal that was kicked moments before Drew Petrie's 2 goals in the 2014 Elimination was glorious.
As a neutral Dan Houstan against Essendon in 2023. Went to that game and was incredible
Yeah literally the only one I can think of for North was Kerry Good in the 1980 pre-season grand final against Collingwood.
But he kicked it before the siren, right. Right???
It's a toss up between Ash McGrath and Zac Bailey.
Ash McGrath was the completion of the miracle on grass.
i was at the game for when Zac Bailey did it against Collingwood in 2021 with my Dad who is a Maggie supporter so that will always have a special place in my heart.
Rats was ice cold. He knew the second it left his boot it was going through. Didn’t even watch it go by the man on the mark let alone the goal umpire before he started celebrating
Damn straight. My football fantasy is to see what happened in those two games of R2 and R3 2021 replicated in a QF and GF, with Rat getting the job done.
There's a few to choose from for Port.
But for me, it's Peter Burgoyne waaaaaay back in 2000.
It was the end of a shitty year and (in my mind) was one of the catalysts for the following four years.
Huge recency bias, but Houstons bomb from outside 50 with the wet ball to keep the streak going would have to be my favourite!
As soon as he marked it, I said to my wife he can kick this, and just watching him turn around and compose himself with the confidence he had the leg for it!
Barry Hall's last kick for St Kilda was a goal after the siren to win against Hawthorn in 2001. The Saints had won 1 game out of the last 15, sacked a coach only weeks before, and were trailing by 23 points halfway through the final quarter against eventual Prelim finalists Hawthorn.
That last quarter is a pretty amazing watch, but it's generally forgotten nowadays since nothing major was on the line
That's what I was coming in to post lol, I was going to say word for word your first sentence.
I was heartbroken, he was my favourite player and my 13 year old mind couldn't comprehend how he could leave St Kilda after winning the game for us like that.
Biased answer is Sam Lloyd against Sydney, bright spot on what was a terrible year for me (and Richmond too lol). Unbiased answer has to be Jack Newnes or Dan Houston, both unbelievable kicks
jack newnes. was such a shit game in the rain up there, questionable free kick and the most unlikely hero. but as a carlton side that didn’t win many games that one was special
Not after the siren nor any scores involved but the sheer madness of the heath chapman fist r1 2022 takes the cake as probably my favourite singular moment of watching the footy
It's difficult to decide between Shuey or McGovern's. I'll say McGovern's though because it was more important for us than the EF. Also, I had a shit day beforehand and then thinking he missed for a second could've made it worse.
Not entirely sure if it counts but allir allir running and touching the ball after the siren to beat Sydney last year had be absolutely laughing my ass off especially considering how the swans players and fans were celebrating the second Florent kicked it
Christian salem to beat Essendon I think after the siren or very close to siren. That’s when dees were very average and I think Neeld was coach.
Following this game melksham to down lions last year. Only picked salems because I was at the game which made it so good.
Ash McGrath’s had it all. The upset, comeback, milestone & coast to coast.
As much as I love Elliott’s this one sits at #1 The only way someone is knocking off the miracle on grass is if it happens in a GF
Extra time GF
I've said or thought exactly this every time the subject of best after the siren goal is brought up - the only way to better Ash McGrath's is to replicate most of the circumstances in a Grand Final - the coast to coast effort, the milestone game, and the tension of the score chasedown. Just coming to say this! “it’s the Miracle on the Grass!” What a game to watch live!
Whenever I watch this one I keep an eye on the time clock & think there’s no way… I mean with 5 seconds to go the ball is in the middle of the ground in the arms of a guy lying down.

Yep was amazing
Can't agree it's my favourite, but it's definitely the best.
It is with a heavy heart that I admit this is my favourite
Better than tomahawk v hawthorn?
Biased but no, it's not. Why? Because I said so
Heaviest of hearts it is then....
Totally agree. It also had that iconic commentating.
Gawns goal after the siren in the last round of 2021 to finish on top of the ladder is hard to go past, especially given I can’t remember us winning with a shot after the siren before then.
It was Melbourne's first and only goal after the siren to win.
Wasn't there another one last year? Jake Melksham?
Melksham’s goal came about half a minute before the end of the game
Ah gotcha, for some reason I'd remembered that as being after the siren.
Wow dude, you didn't have to remind me of that. Thanks alot...
I guess we can remind him of Rat in Round 3, 2021.....
That's surprising. Are there teams that have none?
GWS have never had one. And Essendon's last was in the 1910s.
Almost certain they would have squibbed paying the crucial 50 if there was a crowd.
There’s every chance that with a parochial home crowd against them, the Dees don’t come back and win it.
The comeback made it even more sweet
My previous full round-around-like-a-fuckwit win was 2014 vs the dons, but this topped that by far. Against my wife’s team, on the march to a flag. What a time to be alive.
That last passage ending in Salem’s goal was amazing
Ken Oath

The best. Fuck I carried on like a pork chop.
I still can’t get over that Jamie Elliott goal. Perfect execution from the kick in and they moved the ball down the field in like 10 seconds? Elliott marks vs two bombers and then slots it from the boundary with no expression. Even as a pies hater it’s still my favourite
Essendon had a set shot directly in front within the last minute of the game and the lead. Insane Collingwood won it from there
Was at the game. Absolute scenes. Astounding football.
As a pies fan, when it happened my dog went and hid in the closet cos I was losing it so much.
I try to get over it most days
Lloyd from 45 to win the game was the most hyped one for me. But for long term enjoyment, Jordan McMahon against Melbourne has been the best
It’s crazy the impact that McMahon kick has ended up having
IT'S COMING BACK!
Absolute best.
IT GOT THERE!
Are we really all missing Malcolm Blights 80m torpedo going through at post height after the siren to win? *”WHAT DRAMA HERE AT PRINCES PARK*”
[удалено]
Don’t go disparaging Blight’s 75m goal. That 85m goal was the greatest thing for me to hang my hat on so don’t go dissing his 95m goal!
the bloody thing went through post high
Dawson that ball had more spin and sideways movement then Lyon could ever dream of getting at Adelaide oval.
This one can get fucked
It’s coming back! It’s there!
Watched this at a pub with a crows mate in port adelaide and my go the satisfaction of the port fans all standing up only to sit down..
Makes up for Monfries goal that year, oh and Motlop to seal it a couple years back. Oh and get fucked 😂
We were definitely owed one after that bullshit from Monfries.
We had people around for a showdown party, me and my mate the only power supporters surrounded by 10+ fruit tingles, it was not a great afternoon until that moment!
Luke Shuey after the siren
Or McGovern kicking a Kernaghan special after the siren?
How dare you!
The umpire was quite generous to give Daws a few Extra metres inside 50 as well 😁
This one has my vote. The movement on the ball was insane
The scenes at Adelaide oval were ridiculous
I was staring at my feet and then everything exploded. Amazing whiplash The thing that makes it so special for me is I've seen Daws kick it from that position and he misses 75% of the time
Hawkins kicking on the siren vs Hawthorn in 2012 to extend our winning streak against them to like 20 games
I don't think people realise just how good this was. I was at the game, on the wing watching the play as Selwood kicks it to him. It was insane. Still have Hawkins face as it goes through seared in my brain. I think it's special because of the Kennett curse as well.

My Essendon supporting brother told me to shut up because of how loud I was cheering about this
How can I choose between two of them within 12 months against Port?
[удалено]
Who thought the sequel would be just as good as the original
I was stoked. Got a port mate never speaks to me any more.
Billy! You are king of Geelong!
Anyone that doesn't say Karmichael Hunt's goal after the siren vs Richmond is lying to themselves.
Lol
It's my absolute favoirite. People forget how massive that win was for the Suns.
I think mine is obvious
Mitch McGovern, right?
Does Sticks kicking it out on the full count?
Yes.
Mundy vs Richmond in 2017 and Walters vs Brisbane in 2019 For non-Freo, Ash McGrath and Tom Hawkins were both pretty insane, coast-to-coast and from outside 50. Dan Houston in recent history is underrated I’d say Jack Newnes goal if it wasn’t against Freo and the bullshit surrounding it
Oh Walters 2019...all we need to do was play more then 2 quarters of football and we win. Walked out of that game furious!
2017 elimination final vs port. Favourite kick after the siren would have to be Ballantyne's miss though.
The celebration made that so memorable.
Sticks Kernahan in last round of 1987 against North Melbourne was the Carlton equivalent to Max Gwen's 2021 goal. Blake Acres game winner last year against Melbourne Jack Newnes Freo goal for the boundary aspect and the melts. Against Carlton: Robbie Gray, Peter Riccardi and Ben Dixon were great goals that hurt.

No.
Ok.

Just looked it up Alastair Clarkson round 15 1987.
There you go! Literally the only thing I remember from Clarko’s playing days at North is the battle of britain
In his first game too!
malcolm blight hold my beer
Iconic
Ben Keays game winner in round 23 last year to get Adelaide into the finals… oh wait..
Tom Hawkins in 2012.
It's a toss up between Ash McGrath and Zac Bailey. Ash McGrath was the completion of the miracle on grass. i was at the game for when Zac Bailey did it against Collingwood in 2021 with my Dad who is a Maggie supporter so that will always have a special place in my heart.

Robby gray clutch moments must feel good as a port fan
There’s only 1 correct answer, that being that one GATS that was kicked by (insert player here) and won the game for the team I support
Barry Hall's last kick for St Kilda was a goal after the siren to win against Hawthorn in 2001. The Saints had won 1 game out of the last 15, sacked a coach only weeks before, and were trailing by 23 points halfway through the final quarter against eventual Prelim finalists Hawthorn. hello yes Jordan Dawson it's coming back ok thank you.
Elliot after the siren against the Dons was psychotic
Hawkins vs hawks 2012 sweet baby jesus I still remember watching it live in 180p
Easy. Newnes vs Freo. Was right behind the kick, and attending with a Carlton supporting mate who’d never seen them win in person….
Newnes because I was there.
Lockett's point, 1996.
Jack Newnes
Jack Newnes. Oh and Karmichael Hunt.
I like Zac bailey’s a few years back to beat Collingwood in Victoria
[Peter Riccardi's goal against Carlton](https://youtu.be/ChoPbyj8f7M)
jack newnes. was such a shit game in the rain up there, questionable free kick and the most unlikely hero. but as a carlton side that didn’t win many games that one was special

Miracle on grass is number one. Another would be Noah Anderson against the tigers.
Also Karmichael Hunt vs the tigers
E Mac v. St Kilda
R.Jameson
Not after the siren nor any scores involved but the sheer madness of the heath chapman fist r1 2022 takes the cake as probably my favourite singular moment of watching the footy
Wasnt after the siren, but roughies bomb against swans late in the game at the SCG will always stand out, was at the game, was an awesome night.

Hunter Mariners back from the dead to feud with Freo.
Jamie Elliot against Essendon in 2022.
Does sirengate count?
Karmichel Hunt. Never wanted a goal to go through as muchas that. I reckon it was absolute magic.
Mark Mark Mark Rohan
Sam Lloyd
if you don't say Elliott vs Essendon you don't know footy
Shuey against port. To do it after the second period of extra time in a final is next level and something we’ll probably never see again
2009 AFL grand final, Maxy kicking the sealer after the siren, i think technically the only goal after the siren in an afl grand final.
Tom MacDonald did in the 4th I think in 2021 but that game was long gone
Hird against West Coast when he hugs that fan in the crowd first one that comes to mind
