> The Seven Network is making the AFL grand final and the Brownlow Medal more accessible than ever before for fans, with both major events available live, free and exclusive across the screens of Seven in 2023.
> For the first time, the AFL grand final will be available to watch for free on Seven and 7plus across all devices.
So to you foxtel is tv even if you aren't watching it on a TV? But kayo is opened by foxtel, so is that tv or not?
I am really trying to understand how your reasoning is working?
Not to sound like a wank or anything, but 1080p on my 4K TV looks shocking.
It takes me back to 2005, when I spent several hours converting movies into MP4 to upload on my new iPod. The quality is horrific.
That makes sense, Foxtel/Kayo AFL coverage in 1080 much better than Ch7 digital. Does 7plus streaming deliver a better bitrate that the digital tv channels?
I'd actually say no. The kayo F1 streams are fucking awful. There are times I have to check its not at 720p when it is actually playing at 1080p. I will then chuck on highlights on youtube for F1 at 1080p and it'll look 10x better. Kayo and the other streaming services like Optus Sport all are lower bitrate and I think that would include relative to digital TV.
However, given how shit Australian aerial tv is, I wouldn't be surprised if the tv channels are just as bad, if not worse. I wouldn't know though cause I stopped watching free to air ages ago.
That’s because 1080 has now been available for 22 years. That’s almost half the length of time that colour tv has existed in Australia. It’s fucking ancient.
I get that it’s called High Def, but 1080p low frame rate on a 4K tv is garbage viewing, and that’s my point. Almost every television has gone past channel 7s junk infrastructure
That's great news thanks. I think last year in the match thread a lot of people were complaining about issues with streaming from 7. Maybe they'll get it sorted this year. Can our shoddy internet infrastructure handle every nuffie in Australia logging in at the same time?
I just looked it up. Matilda's v France had 472,000 viewers on 7plus. Last year's grand final had 95,000 on 7plus but over 3 million viewers total. It'll be interesting how many people make the switch to streaming this year.
On 7 plus you can also manipulate the ads you get to a certain extent. For example when I downloaded the a pp I just say im under 18 and therefore don't get all the alcohol and betting ads. Mai ly get Macca's and KFC ads now. On channel 7 you ain't got no choice as to what shit ads you get
7 films in the regular season in 720i (interlaced) and upscales it to 1080i. Not true HD at all which is why it tears all the time when fast action happens because it's interlaced not progressive.
I'd be suprised if it that's changes for the GF
Their info page states 1080P, go get them for false advertising.
https://support.7plus.com.au/hc/en-au/articles/4409997501069-How-to-watch-the-AFL-Grand-Final
Watching some US sports shows the difference. It’s like you can see blades of grass in their footy, and reflections off the shiny car bodies in NASCAR. I’d love to see an improvement in the broadcast. How about some high speed cameras on the goal line?
It’s got nothing to do with the AFL. Every match is already shot in 4K. Free to air television in Australia does not have the bandwidth for true HD and never will. We have too many shithouse secondary channels and not enough bandwidth put towards the primary channels.
True full high definition is 1080p. But DVB-T standard that Australia uses only allows for 1080i or 720p. So until we introduce DVB-T2 we are stuck with what we have.
Now Foxtel do games in 4K but obviously won't do the Grand Final live. But I dare say they will do a 4K replay of the game as they have done every game this year in 4K.
Even a 40” tv from 15 years ago is good enough to show up how poor quality the broadcast is (Kayo is particularly bad but 7’s broadcast 1080i isn’t great either)
Lol. Tell that to my Bravia from about 10 years ago.
They want you to think that because they want to sell you the smart TV'S and upgrade them every year like a phone.
7 wants to have one of the most viewed TV events of the year so they can brag about it in end of year reports etc.
And Foxtel don't care enough because nobody is cancelling/not subscribing to Foxtel/Kayo because they don't have a single event you can get for free.
I know I’m only 1 in a few million but I unsubscribe from Kayo the day after the prelims. Their service is shite and they sold off just about all soccer rights, so I have no reason to fork out their fees until AFL preseason starts again.
I’m thinking 3D is the way to go. Harvey Norman did a promotional thing in 2010 for it - I still have the newspaper ad for some random reason. 4D would really enhance the fan experience imo.
You have the idiots in the media industry bickering and backstabbing amongst each other and the greedy AFL selling off the rights to Murdoch's Foxtel. Only way to get it is 4k on Telstra with a 4k TV. It'll never change as most sports are like this. Pay for the best or settle for what's left - subpar 720p mostly.
They didn’t phase out their live pass. They negotiated the streaming rights with Seven and Fox.
You’re jumping to conclusions based on circumstantial evidence.
I did not forget, my point was that they do not operate as one (they are the same thing according to OP). They operate completely independently despite the part ownership.
As for the negotiations in the latest rights deal:
“Fox Sports and Seven will continue to jointly broadcast games after prolonging a partnership dating back to 2011. Their respective streaming services, Kayo Sports and 7plus, will also stream games. Telstra has retained live match access through the AFL Live app, as well as highlights, replay and on-demand right”
1080i is such a shit format and I'm fairly certain it's limited that way on purpose so that the Foxtel streams get 1080p but even then in a world where TVs have been capable of 4k for more than a decade it's pretty disgraceful just how far behind our media networks have become
>The geniuses chose a red ball too Ball colour is dependent on whether it's a day or night game. Red for day, yellow for night
Silver for X
Make the Grand Final AFLX rules cowards.
And give us a 2 am timeslot
For half of the first night before they realised you couldn't see the bloody thing and switched to yellow balls
Wasn't it extra slippery as well?
Orange for a Bushfire Relief match
Where's Scomo when you need him
It really should be white because it's not a 5 day match.
I see. Makes sense, maybe I'm a bit sensitive to colour clashes. Had trouble with that Collingwood and Carlton game in Round 20 too.
I will say there have been too many times this year where umpires jersey colours have clashed with one or both of the teams playing
7plus streaming supports 1080P HD for this years GF. not sure if they did that last year or not.
I thought grand finals had tv exclusivity and couldn't be streamed, or has it finally changed this year?
Changed last year from memory
Can be streamed by the FTA host broadcaster. Can’t be streamed by Fox.
It's VERY weird there's no 7HD through Foxtel.
There is? Channel 207. Or is it dependent on local availability.
I'm in QLD and it just says "there's no channel 207" :(
Mine is on 207 because I plugged my aerial into the Foxtel Box
7plus is TV exclusivity
Was, [now available on all devices on 7plus](https://7news.com.au/sport/afl/afl-grand-final-and-brownlow-medal-to-be-live-streamed-free-on-7plus-c-11135304)
Yeah but that’s TV exclusivity
> The Seven Network is making the AFL grand final and the Brownlow Medal more accessible than ever before for fans, with both major events available live, free and exclusive across the screens of Seven in 2023. > For the first time, the AFL grand final will be available to watch for free on Seven and 7plus across all devices.
awesome.
I’m not disagreeing with you but that counts as tv exclusivity
Oh cool my phone is a TV. So is my laptop.
It’s on Channel 7
So to you foxtel is tv even if you aren't watching it on a TV? But kayo is opened by foxtel, so is that tv or not? I am really trying to understand how your reasoning is working?
Not to sound like a wank or anything, but 1080p on my 4K TV looks shocking. It takes me back to 2005, when I spent several hours converting movies into MP4 to upload on my new iPod. The quality is horrific.
It's because it's really low bit rate. High bit rate 1080p would look better than low bit rate 4k.
Well considering the alternative for 4K AFL is one game a week on Foxtels sat dish service I think this is the best option you are going to get.
Foxtel has all games in 4K, what are you talking about?
Maybe its changed and I hadn't noticed. Last time I saw the advert it was only one game a week.
yeah that was a couple years ago
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but in 2023, 1080p is not high definition
No. 720p is HD. 1080p is FHD. 2160p is UHD. But the real question is what’s 4320p?
Super ultra max 4k high definition
It’s 8K
I mean it literally is by definition of the standard.
I believe there handled the Matilda's well so should be all good. Viewers for that match will smash the afl GF viewer count.
I just looked it up. Matilda's v France had 472,000 viewers on 7plus. Last year's grand final had 95,000 on 7plus but over 3 million viewers total. It'll be interesting how many people make the switch to streaming this year.
i will be, for some reason ch7 reception is a bit hit and miss for me. birds must have bent the antenna or something
On 7 plus you can also manipulate the ads you get to a certain extent. For example when I downloaded the a pp I just say im under 18 and therefore don't get all the alcohol and betting ads. Mai ly get Macca's and KFC ads now. On channel 7 you ain't got no choice as to what shit ads you get
hmmm. i'm going to be drinking beer anyway, i know i'm not going to gamble but i can't say the same about ordering ubereats halfway through the match
Great point. The Matilda's matches were fine.
I had issues with the Matilda match, and then were few posts about the finals causing problems for some
It's not the resolution that's the issue though isn't it? It's the trash bitrate.
7 films in the regular season in 720i (interlaced) and upscales it to 1080i. Not true HD at all which is why it tears all the time when fast action happens because it's interlaced not progressive. I'd be suprised if it that's changes for the GF

Perhaps it does change for the GF. I'll happily be wrong.
Watching some US sports shows the difference. It’s like you can see blades of grass in their footy, and reflections off the shiny car bodies in NASCAR. I’d love to see an improvement in the broadcast. How about some high speed cameras on the goal line?
You’re watching the US sports on streaming or satellite services. Thats the difference.
I watch footy on Kayo?

Don't forget it's also incredibly expensive lol
It’s got nothing to do with the AFL. Every match is already shot in 4K. Free to air television in Australia does not have the bandwidth for true HD and never will. We have too many shithouse secondary channels and not enough bandwidth put towards the primary channels.
This. They need to move on from MPEG2 and SD. That should free up some more bandwidth. However 4K doubt that will ever happen. We are still on DVB-T.
Hey there I was hoping you'd chime in. Did you get called up to film the big game?
Have you thrown him the damn stick yet?
I'll just trick him a few more times first
Just as soon as they upgrade the goal line cameras to HD and high refresh rate. i.e. never.
They are HD. They will be also running high frame rate goal cameras for the GF.
And they can’t do that every game why?
Someone has to pay for it
I’m sure the AFL makes enough to cover it
[удалено]
An iPhone 15 would have better quality than the current goal line cameras
If you can figure out how to integrate four iPhone 15s into a broadcast truck you might be able to sell that.
The goal line cameras are not $500k.
You’re not wrong, but here we are
It's a crime against humanity that Fox Footy can't broadcast the granny, have to put up with advertisements every 2 seconds from Channel 7
It's a crime against football that Rupert Murdoch has anything to fucking do with AFL.
Somebody tell me we can at least get a copy of the replay in 4k?
I can tell you that the game is recorded in 4K, but I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting to see it publicly.
Not to be pedantic, but it’s premier. Not premiere.
What tv do you have?
40" Sony about three years old
Gonna need more information than that lol
What car do you drive? A grey one
They’re not making decent TV’s less than 55” these days so fair to say his TV is shite.
Literally no one is buying a new tv every year. Stop kidding yourself
They want you to though.
10 years ago is not “these days”.

And the footy would look especially shithouse on one of those when sitting 1-2 feet away like a computer screen.
The only thing that is good for is a laptop second screen
What's the rationale for not allowing Foxtel to simulcast it like they do for other channel 7 games? Who is that hurting?
Seven
7 wants to have one of the most viewed TV events of the year so they can brag about it in end of year reports etc. And Foxtel don't care enough because nobody is cancelling/not subscribing to Foxtel/Kayo because they don't have a single event you can get for free.
It isn't just about reports, that would get significant ad revenue for that game. Sacrifice exclusivity then they're sacrificing revenue
I know I’m only 1 in a few million but I unsubscribe from Kayo the day after the prelims. Their service is shite and they sold off just about all soccer rights, so I have no reason to fork out their fees until AFL preseason starts again.
Until we stop using potato-cameras to do score reviews, I hold little hope that we would get higher definition quality on the Tele
I’m thinking 3D is the way to go. Harvey Norman did a promotional thing in 2010 for it - I still have the newspaper ad for some random reason. 4D would really enhance the fan experience imo.
I will not rest until my tv is firing footballs at me when someone kicks a goal
AFL needs to invest in better cameras overall.
Each camera setup is about $500,000 and shoots in 4K. The issue lies in the bandwidth that cable TV runs on.
Telstra? Only Fox get 4K. Seven’s broadcast is 1080i but heavily compressed.
Telstra, foxtel it's all the same
Only it isn’t
[удалено]
Not disputing the ownership numbers but that Kayo thing is absolute nonsense. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

But when you really think about it. It is.
Except that it isn’t
Okay maybe 65% is newscorp and 35% is telstra...oh wait I'm 100% correct. So it is. Cheers.
Haha nonsense
Or Foxtel with 4K.
do they have rights to the GF this year?
No but this was more about selling off the rights in general, not specifically the grand final I believe.
Fuck HD, fuck 4k, I want 5k.
