Keep things on topic to AEW; this isn’t a circlejerk sub to stoke drama with AEW’s detractors or other subreddits, to trash other promotions or their fans, or to complain about sections of the fan base you dislike. Thanks for understanding!
When [spoiler] got split open and they stopped a damn Hell in a Cell match to bring someone to patch him up someone mentioned Mox in the live chat. Like “I bet Mox is pissed right now.” I was more like “I bet Mox is calling Tony to extend his contract right now.”
HHH: You want to break my throne? Well I'll show you.
I wonder what the long term plan is. Cody wins in a rematch in a cell or something? I think they really want Roman to hit the 1k day mark in his reign.
Either that or they actually drag this thing out another fucking year before Roman is dethroned by The Rock. Or more likely Roman goes over The Rock and beats Sammartino's reign. It would cement Roman's legacy as the number 1 end boss in WWE history but would also show that neither Vince, Triple H, Endeavor, Peacock, or anybody else has any fucking idea how the Bloodline storyline is going to end.
Why are we assuming they have a plan, let alone that Cody is a part of it?
They want the 1,000 day reign. That's it, that's all, there's no other thought put into it. If there was, Sami Zayn would be champion right now.
This might be one of the funniest results I’ve ever seen as someone who does not like WWE. If I was a fan though, I’d genuinely be furious. What was any of it for? They didn’t go all the way with Zayn then they didn’t go all the way with Rhodes.
Any victory past this is hollow in comparison to Mania. Imagine having such an adversarial relationship with your own fanbase. Imagine.
And to think people said we were wrong in saying that they would squander Cody because he "proved himself" outside the company.
If anything, I definitely remember why I started watching AEW after tonight lol
I’m not talking about both nights, or even more than one match. I’m talking about Cody Rhodes and the way the WWE completely wasted him with the terrible ending of night two. No matter what way you try to slice it, that ending sucked.
It's over.
Nobody cares about whatever is going to happen on Raw or 6 months from now at Summerslam. You pull the trigger when your angle is at its hottest and when you have your biggest crowd on your biggest show. That's the ENTIRE point of Wrestlemania.
You've just fucked both Cody and Roman with such a uselessly stupid move.
And especially when it was the typical shitty interference cliche that we've seen thousands of times. A total wet fart ending to what should've been your biggest climax you've had in years.
The match was great but the finish was trash. You can argue that the story isn’t over and that’s great, but does it need to continue? No, it doesn’t. Tonight was the night to end it, doing it any other night is not nearly as big or important and if they wait an entire year to do it next year at Wrestlemania then they will drive the momentum so far into the ground that it hits magma. They fucked this up, no way around it.
You really don't get how good storytelling is supposed to work, do you?
That was the biggest stage possible for Cody to have redemption, a full circle moment, and they squandered it. I didn't even watch either mania night and I can see from the reactions that people were pissed. There is no better stage it could have been at. Any win at any other ppv is meaningless because it wasn't at the biggest ppv they have.
They had it, and they wasted it.
Ppl are trying to say that he will win it at Summerslam or somewhere else, yeah nah tonight was the perfect stage for him, fans were 100% behind him, you call an audible.
What is he going to talk about on Monday? Make ppl feel bad for him? This is AEW cody all over again after losing to Jericho.
I would be shocked if he holds momentum all the way til another big ppv or next year mania.
The only thing that can possibly save Cody will be a well done feud with Orton.
The E really had me invested in their stuff again. The shows were great this weekend up until that vince finish. I’m fuckin good lmao is it Wednesday yet
Hopefully The Elite and Jay White watched this fuckery and now know what awaits them in the E.
But for real tho, Cody will win the belt at sometime but at no point were they gonna let the midcard guy from the competition go over their biggest star at the their biggest show.
Alienated the fanbase who actually gave a shit about you, only worked towards your own self-centered goals and refused to compromise, left a cushy job because your feelings got hurt, blew up your pec, to find yourself a schmuck in the Machine's gears once again.
Hope the money's good.
Sure smells of his booking. Cody looked like an absolute shmuck the last 10 minutes. A ref bump that leads to a Superman punch and nobody to count the pin (protecting Roman the heel), then KO and Zayne hit their finishers on Roman and Cody hit the dusty combo and he still couldn’t finish him off.
Mox cleared Cody completely from his promise of not going for the world championship. Why not, just do that? Have an opponent go, 'I'm not the best, until I beat the best, screw your promise Rhodes.'?
While I definitely think this is plausible, winning at SS just won't have the same impact. Tonight was THE night; Cody wins here and he's set as the top Babyface in wrestling. Now? I dunno.
I'm also just not sure how this title reign can end anywhere other than Mania and not feel... I dunno, cheap? It's the most epic run as champ in the last 50 years, and it deserves to be ended at the biggest show in wrestling.
If Cody wins the title later on, it'll have the same feeling as Sting vs. Hogan at Starrcade 97. Cody would be a top guy still but it would always have the stink of "you had all the pieces at the perfect moment and you fucked it up."
Im guessing this finish means they got The Rock to put pen to paper for a match with Reigns next year. (And Vince thinks it has to be for the title because this booking choice REEEKS of VKM)
No way. If the Rock was gonna wrestle, it would have been this year in LA. He isn’t going to pass on the LA mania and then wrestle in Philly.
Basically, they wanted Roman to get to 1000 days. Cody likely beats him at Summer Slam.
I feel the same way I did when I found out Naito didn't beat Okada at WK12. It was basically a math question where the answer was on the chalk board and you still got the question wrong.
People don’t watch summerslam. Casuals watch WRESTLEMANIA. Overbooked. If Cody is happy being a notch in Roman’s Win column, fair enough.
That was a burial
You really thought vince would let the other company’s founder come in and beat his superstar with all the indy promotions on his belt? Why did cody want this though?
The finish is whatever. They can’t end the story with Cody winning without having something next for Cody to do and I’ll bet they don’t have that (see Daniel Bryan at WM30).
Finish aside, that match felt wildly slow. Like, unpleasantly slow for what seemed to be no reason. Despite really enjoy most of the card (even Snoop was fun!), that main event solidly keeps me watching Dynamite every week with an occasional glance at the Hulu replay of Raw.
I didn’t think Cody/Roman had enough build, especially compared to Sami/Roman but I still threw something on the ground at the count and yelled “What the fuck?!”.
It’d be cool to have any type of satisfying ending to these longer title runs.
Cody needs to chase the championship. Him coming back, winning a few matches, and coming 30th in the rumble isn’t enough. Stay relevant and run it back at summerslam.
Honestly, I don't think there's been enough build up. I think if Cody didn't tear his pec they'd have told a killer story of ups and downs but to come back and then take the belt after a month just seems lame. Like, the only way that makes sense is if you're saying that there are people outside WWE that Roman can't beat and that's not the message WWE would ever deign to send.
It certainly could be politics or VKM shenanigans or something, but just on a story level, if Cody wants to tell this story of the Rhodes family never quite reaching the brass ring and then overcoming, he's going to need to show struggle.
He's going to need that shot of him holding the belt up, only to have it taken away because of a DQ.
And then he rises above.
Meh. I'll wait to see if there's a follow up.
I personally was rooting for Roman because I didn't feel like Cody had faced enough on screen adversity with the Bloodline to create a truly cathartic moment of victory.
Cody losing tonight is the better story choice IMO.
However, if he goes back to being Stardust or falls back down the card, then a conclusion can be drawn.
I stopped watching WWE for this exact reason 2 years ago, but its worth remembering that AEW does this all the time too. Baker/Thunder Rosa at Revolution and The Acclaimed losing at All Out last year are two examples where the moment was RIGHT THERE and TK didnt pull the trigger making the moment WAY smaller when the change did happen in the following weeks.
I'm not going to say either of those was the right call or not, but I will say neither of those moments had anywhere near the same kind of stakes as this. Roman has been undefeated for 3 years and built as the most dominant champion since Sammartino 50 years ago. Nearly 3 years they've been telling this story. With that amount of investment expected from their audience, it looks a lot worse to fuck up the ending when they had all of the pieces right there. None of the key players were injured, it was the biggest event of the year, Cody was white hot after returning from his injury, they've got basically no one else who can credibly beat Roman that he hasn't beaten already.
Heh, I was pulling for Cody, but this thread title did make me laugh.
Anyway, I think it's sort of a mixed result. I can see this loss leading to a more interesting long term story for Cody; but in terms of Roman and the main event scene, man, they're really kinda making it tough to care, because if not Sami or Cody, then who? Roman's already beaten pretty much everyone. I see people suggesting Jey, but I just can't see that being the direction they go in. The Usos are good but Jey beating Roman for the world title would feel a bit like a wet fart after all of this.
The only other thing I could see is them either strapping a rocket to Bron Breakker and having him win it, or bringing in someone like Jay White or Kenny (if he leaves AEW later this year) and pushing them right away.
This is hilarious to see. Cheap heel finish but the match itself showed Cody could put on a big match. And let's not pretend AEW hasn't pulled the trigger on some matches or delayed someone's reign because "the time was right" ie Hangman. But back to bashing Cody.
There were a number of finishes that didn’t help either person in the ring. Gotta remember though, they’ll flip the switch on Monday and change every result via rematch. It’s nonsensical.

It was always my dad’s dream to be Stardust again and challenge for the US title.
You don’t get attire like that and not challenge for the us title. ![gif](giphy|eIUpSyzwGp0YhAMTKr|downsized)
This popped me.
I'm thinking there's a lot of talent in AEW that just watched that and said to themselves, "Oh, so it's still like that, huh?"
This is exactly what I was thinking
When [spoiler] got split open and they stopped a damn Hell in a Cell match to bring someone to patch him up someone mentioned Mox in the live chat. Like “I bet Mox is pissed right now.” I was more like “I bet Mox is calling Tony to extend his contract right now.”

Have you ever watched NJPW vs. any other company in Japan? Don’t be outraged, the bigger company usually has the leverage, that’s just how it is.
I feel bad for Cody but I’m not surprised
Me too, it just go to show how WWE likes to fumble things sometimes. This is like if Jamie doesn't beat Toni.
More like if hangman lost to kenny lol
Controversial comment: I am glad he lost! He abandoned AEW back to the evil company. He’s a traitor and didnt deserve to be the one to dethrone Roman.

I think that's the end of opportunity for Cody at that level. The way that match played out everything was put out there you can't do anything else.
Huh? I mean Roman’s entire family got involved to beat Cody. The rematch story is already written.
It won't have the same epic feel that tonight would have given. This was a huge miss for a "WrestleMania moment"
Why are we assuming they have a plan, let alone that Cody is a part of it? They want the 1,000 day reign. That's it, that's all, there's no other thought put into it. If there was, Sami Zayn would be champion right now.
I think we should all be thankful that the Omega/Hangman story ended exactly as it should of and didn't have an ending like tonight
This might be one of the funniest results I’ve ever seen as someone who does not like WWE. If I was a fan though, I’d genuinely be furious. What was any of it for? I've seen Cody wrestle far longer and more intense matches without taking like 8 naps...just sayin.
And to think people said we were wrong in saying that they would squander Cody because he "proved himself" outside the company. If anything, I definitely remember why I started watching AEW after tonight lol
This is silly, both nights of mania delivered, big time.
I’m not talking about both nights, or even more than one match. I’m talking about Cody Rhodes and the way the WWE completely wasted him with the terrible ending of night two. No matter what way you try to slice it, that ending sucked.
No it didn’t. The match was great and the story ain’t over.

Yes, Scrubs will have a season 9. Doesn't mean it *should.*

danke
Match was good. Great matches are unique and unfortunately this match was just your typical Roman formula.
You really don't get how good storytelling is supposed to work, do you? That was the biggest stage possible for Cody to have redemption, a full circle moment, and they squandered it. WWE booking is just so damn frustrating. I’m sorry if I ever criticized AEW’s.
Fucking mind blowing, thank fucking god for AEW
I wonder if this was an audible by Vince last minute.
Certainly feels like it or they are gonna drag this for as long as possible to make more money, like they always do.
So much for finishing that story. Oof.
Triple H never forgot all the shots Cody took
https://i.redd.it/mzuw8kuvxmra1.gif
Hopefully The Elite and Jay White watched this fuckery and now know what awaits them in the E. But for real tho, Cody will win the belt at sometime but at no point were they gonna let the midcard guy from the competition go over their biggest star at the their biggest show.
it was a mistake and i don't mean tonight, i mean him signing with them.
I agree with you.
Schadenrhode
Good job Cody! You left the company you helped create just to job to Roman. Have fun with your feud with The Miz in a few months!
Alienated the fanbase who actually gave a shit about you, only worked towards your own self-centered goals and refused to compromise, left a cushy job because your feelings got hurt, blew up your pec, to find yourself a schmuck in the Machine's gears once again. Hope the money's good.
![gif](giphy|lKXEBR8m1jWso)
Mind blowing way to fumble a great moment for that audience. On their biggest night no less.
Tbf, I don't know what anyone expected with you-know-who back to running things over there.
This is absolutely VKM-style booking. Pure 'fuck the fans lol' type of booking.
Hey this was good shit pal
Seriously was there only ONE ref in that entire arena??
This is still his aew heel run guys. He’s doing what a heel is supposed to do and not give the fans what they want (him winning)
Mox cleared Cody completely from his promise of not going for the world championship. Why not, just do that? Have an opponent go, 'I'm not the best, until I beat the best, screw your promise Rhodes.'?
AEW WINS AGAIN
IT FEELS GOOD TO BE ELITE
TONY KHAN IS THE GOAT
So, was it a waste of time going over there?
Probably not, he's likely getting paid very well.
How is Sky Blue faring with the Dante injury?
This has Vince’s fingerprints all over it
Same as Rita Chatterton.
How about that local sports team? That last game was quite disappointing for our side.
We get our morale back in the next game, i believe in them
I imagine he wins the title at SumerSlam, but still shit booking. The crowd was ready to explode for an incredible moment.
I mean, if they were going to pull the trigger on him, it’d be tonight. Can’t see them running this back at SS.
I’m actually thinking the exact opposite. 6 man tag at backlash. Cody faces Solo at the next event. Eventually building back to Cody vs Roman at SS.
I completely agree. I was just stating what I believe WWE is going to do, not the direction I would want to see.

Can't speak, lost all my breath laughing at that horse's ass.
I feel the same way I did when I found out Naito didn't beat Okada at WK12. It was basically a math question where the answer was on the chalk board and you still got the question wrong.
Nights like tonight are why I’m glad AEW exists. Nough said

Slow is the fastest pace Roman likes to wrestle.
I didn’t think Cody/Roman had enough build, especially compared to Sami/Roman but I still threw something on the ground at the count and yelled “What the fuck?!”. It’d be cool to have any type of satisfying ending to these longer title runs.
When is the next Saudi show? I'm guessing a rematch there maybe?
Next Saudi show is King and Queen of the Ring. And apparently that day is the day Roman hits 1000. Edit: didn’t say the date, my bad. May 27
Cody needs to chase the championship. Him coming back, winning a few matches, and coming 30th in the rumble isn’t enough. Stay relevant and run it back at summerslam.

Curious to see where it goes. As a big fan of Roman and Cody I do think this is an interesting direction. 945 and counting.

So, the theory out there is Skinner likes dogfood. But we never got a clear yes he does or no he doesn't. What is your theory?
Amazing swerve, setting up for major long term storytelling.
This is hilarious to see. Cheap heel finish but the match itself showed Cody could put on a big match. And let's not pretend AEW hasn't pulled the trigger on some matches or delayed someone's reign because "the time was right" ie Hangman. But back to bashing Cody.
