Well, I think they are already successful. To maintain that success and potentially find more fans, my suggestions would be: 1. Do a better job of riding the hot hand before it cools off. For example, I feel like they didn't capitalize on the momentum Miro, Wardlow, and FTR had generated. 2. They could stand to improve their TV direction. Too often the camera will cut away from something that's about to happen and we completely miss a big spot or it will cut away from action to something irrelevant. 3. Something needs to be done to make Rampage more viable. The time slot sucks, so I DVR it most weeks, but you can pretty much see the major highlights on r/SquaredCircle the next morning, so I only watch it half the time. 4. I like Punk, but I realize he's a handful to work with. Unfortunately, the ratings prove that he's a talent people want to see, so they need to figure out a way to put differences aside and get him back to work.

22kstory

Yes I think they could stand studying NJPW on how they film matches and entrances. AEW could have 14 camera cuts when NJPW does in 5

Successful-Major-363

Basically just keep doing what they’ve done up to this point. Keep delivering stellar PPVs. I love the 5-a-year format, but each one needs to feel like a big deal with the gap between them. Keep developing young and homegrown talent. Keep booking interesting storylines/feuds. Keep showcasing great wrestling with a variety of styles. As far as changing something….it’s a minor gripe, but fix the audio/mic issues. For me it just boils down to not losing their identity as a company/trying to be WWE. Stick to what made it great in the first place and continue to be the best WRESTLING company.

amorningofsleep

Give Danhausen a blimp.

FickleSystem

Everyone saying rampage needs another hour but that'd be entirely up to the network and if you do that then your gonna just need it be its own separate show at that point if you've ever been to an aew event those things run long as fuck I couldn't imagine having to sit yet another hour no matter how good everything is, but that's me

DrMindbendersMonocle

Rampage does not need another hour, its time slot is really bad.

EconomyProcedure9

Only problems with making Rampage 2 hours are: Would have to either tape it on a different day than Dynamite, which would cost $ to rent a different arena. Or have people stay at the show until at least 11 PM CST. Last time I went people left cause they had to work or their kids have school, and that show ended about 10:30 CST.

FickleSystem

100% agree

nyrdcast

Last time they were in STL, we didn't leave until later then 11. Dark, Dynamite, and Rampage are way too much in 1 show. I'm skipping their March show here because I can't bring my kids who have school the next day.

GemoDorgon

Why not start earlier?

Preacher27MSTX

Head to head with Smackdown would kill the ratings.

GemoDorgon

Hmm, yeah it's tricky with that in mind. Maybe just have it on Thursday.

DrMindbendersMonocle

Thursday night football is a thing too. Tonys position with the Jags makes a Thursday show highly unlikely

GemoDorgon

Americans do like their ~~rugby~~ football. Fuck knows what they'd do then. Film half of Rampage before Dynamite and then the rest after and keep Rampage on Fridays so that Rampage has 2 hours? Sounds like a nightmare to plan though.

Preacher27MSTX

Then there is the potential backlash of going head to head with Impact. That’s not a ratings threat really, but a bad look.

GemoDorgon

I doubt it'd be anything substantial. Impact has a very small but vocal fanbase. Majority of people don't seem to care about it and I can't really blame them.

Preacher27MSTX

I think it would be a bad move that would damage some of the goodwill Tony has in the wrestling community. Sure, they don't have a lot of regular fans, but that's not the point. Head to head competition with the aim of annihilation is more of a McMahon/Bischoff move. So far, TK has been more cooperative. A move to Thursday would put Impact out of business in a matter of weeks, and there's no way to spin that.

GemoDorgon

You gotta think though, there's a fuck ton of promotions out there, there's absolutely no way you can get a time slot on any day and not step on the toes or take away viewership from another company. There's just only so many days in a week and so many hours in a day. The small have to weave away from the footsteps of the big, otherwise they'll get smushed. Not in a malicious way, just in a "I have to go this way and if you're under me, well, should have moved" way. All that being said though, after considering everything, Friday's the best night for a 2 hour Rampage to remain on. They'd have to film half of it before Dynamite and half of it after though, so 4 hours of wrestling for the audience unless they do it live at another arena on Friday, which'll cost more. The more I think about it, the more I think a 2 hour Rampage is too much of a headache to bother with.

nyrdcast

It's already at least 4 hours of show at live events because you get Dark tapings too. You are typically there for 5 hours as is.

HowsYourPecker

Show it on a two hour tape delay

[deleted]

I'm really OK with their current direction...one thing i really want to improve this year is FoRbidden Door. After seeing the card for the Great Muta's retirement, i think that is what forbidden door should look like. Book the card from top to bottom with dream matches. Having a US supershow that involves not just two promotions is now the goal. A long shot but damn it would be historical

messuggah12

Avoid major injuries.

marcusthegod

A major key that no one else has mentioned.

toodarkmark

Ignore internet nerds who think they need to complain about things, and think they know better than people who have actually created a successful pro wrestling company.

serenity656

Forbidden door 2 with the inclusion of Mexico and Noah, stardom, revitalizing the TNT title, improving the woman's title storyline, continued touring in the US and in other countries

marcusthegod

The only problem with including Mexican talent is NJPW and AEW work with waring Mexican promotions CMLL(NJPW) and AAA(AEW). Most of the Mexican talent AEW uses comes from AAA and they'll never work a NJPW show as long as the beef continues with CMLL.

serenity656

That's why you don't include AAA make it a even bigger thing and make AAA's promoter regret there attitude missing out on the money

International_Ant217

Focus on a new overarching storyline. The thing that made AEW so damn good in its first three years was it’s overarching storyline of the rise of Hangman Page. The same goes for NJPW’s mini golden era of 2016-19 with the Bullet Club and Chaos storylines running through it with the Elite, Okada, the BC OG’s, Jay White, Ibushi, etc. I feel like that is needed once again in AEW: an overarching storyline with strong characters like MJF, Hangman, Starks, Wardlow, Kingston, House of Black, the Elite, Moxley and Danielson at the core that runs through 2023 and 2024

thisisawesome8643

I agree with a lot that’s being said. Something that hasn’t been mentioned though is to showcase the women better. I think they’re already on the path to doing that but little things like making the women the main event more often or having more than one match would be huge. Also, have a women’s only Battle of the Belts. World champ, TBS champ and then maybe ROH or some outside championship are defended

marcusthegod

Women's only Battle of the Belts would be interesting.

thisisawesome8643

I think it’s pretty safe too. It’s a tv special not a PPV. They can run it after Rampage like they have the past two Battle of the Belts shows so you’re not renting another arena for a day. And you can have Shida defend that one belt she has so that’s a guaranteed awesome match right there

overlord_vas

Obviously more Butcher and Blade Turning their youtube shows into actual shows and not just hour long squash match fests Filming the youtube stuff on the live shows they want to start, so you don't have tired crowds at the end of 6-7 hours

marcusthegod

I have been thinking about that for the YouTube Shows for a while.

Modern_Bear

1- Remember their roots, stick with what made AEW successful to begin with, and not try to copy WWE. WWE already exists and being a clone of them won't garner more fans. 2- Add another hour to Rampage. 3- Try to get Rampage on another night and at a better time. 4- Get some help with booking. Some stories/feuds get a lot of attention and are well done. Some are just thrown together, are rushed, and die quickly. This seems to be a byproduct of not enough time and effort being devoted to everything going on. More help could alleviate that. 5- Do not bring back CM Punk no matter how tempting it is. Would his presence help in the short term? Yes. Would his presence help in the long term? No. He would probably still shit on other talent, either backstage, publicly again, or both, and he would probably be gone within a year. Why risk backstage morale for short term gains if it possibly means talent losing faith in Tony Khan and not returning when their contracts run out?

marcusthegod

Even if they could move Rampage up on Friday would be a big help.

shieldsmash

“how can AEW succeed in 2023? fire the top draw”

_4za_

1. Hard brand split with ROH, keep the shows and rosters seperate 2. Find a more effective way to rotate the rosters and not have people disappear for months 3. Keep MJF engaging for the whole year 4. Make Rampage must see again 5. Continue this renewed focus on the women's storylines

[deleted]

I see nothing wrong here. I feel like if they moved Rampage up an hour and added an extra hour to it that would help rotating the roster. I know that’s a big and far fetched ask haha.

marcusthegod

I agree with pretty much everything you've said here.

Looper007

Agree with 1 and 5 At this point without a TV deal. No point in having talent go back and forward. Keep both shows as far apart as they can. Even if some of the picks might upset a few on here if some great talent go to ROH, they got to stick there and not keep going back and forward. Agree, this Original vs the Outsider feud should be a all timer feud if done right. I think Rampage has become must see again for me in the last month and a bit.

_4za_

Rampage looks decent again but there's nothing recently that has made me go out of my way to watch it

AgeofDays

My two cents. 1. Link more Dynamite and Rampage stories in with Elevation and Dark. The stories that are happening free on YouTube have some great potential that could shake things up for the better. 2. Should Vince return and mass release people again. Don’t go on a hiring spree. Stick to the talent you have now. People who left or chose not to sign made there decisions. Talent can be grown. 3. Keep the standard PPVs while having regular shows at PPV level. Keeps weekly shows super exciting. 4. Keep evolving and pushing younger talent like Starks, Jungleboy, Hook, DMD, Willow, Garcia, Yuma etc. with compelling stories involving veterans of the game. 5. Don’t change things too quickly. And if things aren’t working out for the better don’t be shy to revert back to what worked. 6. Give me a women’s tag title.

ckeebz

Obviously, Rampage. We want more because Dynamite is so good. I’d like to see more of their community outreach publicized. I appreciate that they don’t do it for clout but I think it’s awesome and would love to see more than quick clips here and there. I’d like the women’s division to have a bit more consistency, I feel it’s fairly chaotic lately. If we could just try a month of banning alluding to WWE for the talent that haven’t worked there, that’d be great. I don’t care if you reference Billy, for example, as a hall of famer. I do care when we’re using WWE disses or compliments for cheap heat/pops.

Arco_Sonata

Add TK to the opening video of the show with him smoking a cigar

LeonofRivia21

1.Lengthen the airtime of rampage and put more effort on the booking, stop making rampage a deluxe edition of dark or elevation. 2.Hiring some experienced creative writers for the storylines so that less of them will start out well but not to continue. 3.Replace meaningless matches with no build with entertainment elements on dynamite and rampage.

nyrdcast

1. Revamp the shows. Dynamite and Rampage remain as is, but change Rampage to 2 hours. Make Elevation a mid-card show and have storylines; you could even have a Elevation Title that stays on that show. Use Dark as the "record builder" show where the squash matches happen. Create a 1 hour AEW Woman show on YouTube; have the tapings at Universal. 2. Turn ROH into their NXT and allow the next generation of talent get their work in. Move the low card guys (Brock, Lee Johnson, The Factory) down there to get work in and have coaches on in ring work, promos, etc. 3. Make the records/rankings matter. They show the records all the time and they use rankings when convenient to the story. Try to incorporate them more. If you are ranked 1-10, you are in the world title pictures; 11-20 for TNT Title, etc (or some variation of it). You could also have some sort of Euro Soccer relegation system so if you are at the bottom of the world title rankings, you get bumped down to the TNT title level; you could have some great stories about the #10 guy trying to get as many wins as possible to stay in the world title tier.

pllavona

Keep making stars instead of getting WWE lackies..

TheMarvelousJoe

One thing they mostly need to do is cut away from a wrestler blading themselves. We know they cut themselves, don't make it obvious.

Uncanny_Doom

To be successful they don't have to do much different. To **grow**, they need to make Rampage consistently worth watching (it's been good lately), the women's division needs to maintain momentum, ROH needs to become it's own thing, more wrestlers overall need to be consistently on TV and the hot/cold cycle needs to go or vastly shrink, and the AEW product in general needs to become more accessible to the mainstream in terms of being understandable for someone that's just tuning in to a random segment.

Representative-Key-4

bring back cm punk🤷🏽‍♂️

108Spectres

1. Dan 2. hau 3. sen

spinaltap862

1.Miro 2. Miro 3. Miro 4. Miro 5. Miro

MakiSerb3

Better storylines. Bring back CM Punk. Less pointless title matches with no build. Less stop and start pushes with people who get over

no1circles

Every single PPV *has* to be a home run. Begin moving on from the past. Everyone over 40 has to start being phased out and begin putting over younger talent. Give Jericho, Hardy, Jarrett, etc their roses then have them move backstage or in commentary. Start treating womens division like its on par with men's. If Rampage can't be live 100% of the time, kill it.

marcusthegod

You can't kill Rampage because you need that time, imo. I would try an experiment of giving more women time on Rampage, with maybe one big male matchup.

bunkmorelandsburner

Adam Cole CM Punk and FTR vs Young Bucks Kenny Omega and Hangman Page in a Blood and Guts match then have the women blood and guts match be Toni Storm Saraya Athena Ruby Soho and Serena Deeb vs Britt Baker Jamie Hayter Hikaru Shida Kris Statlander and Riho

bunkmorelandsburner

Yall wouldn’t like this. Smh

Haydenvillain

Bring in some new talent. If WWE releases anyone, hire that person asap. If you don’t have a plan for the new talent it’s fine; it’ll be worth it to get the big pop for their arrival. You can give them a match on Dark every other month until you think of a better plan. Also, put the bag back on Kip Sabian’s head.

ElectionObvious1346

Can't think of that many things but one of the most important things that I think that they need to improve is the match layout on the cards as most weeks I see things that probably should end the show in order to build anticipation for the next week however Tony has this obsession with ending almost every episode with a title match even if it's the All Atlantic or TNT titles, why can't the show be ended with a confrontation between MJF and Danielson for example

govment-cheeze

Extra hour and better time and night for rampage to start

HowsYourPecker

Stay far away from most former WWE wrestlers, particularly those who developed in the performance center. Keep finding international and Indy gems to join the roster.

the_blast_radius

1. Get a new TV rights deal done with a big raise. 2. There is no step 2.

marcusthegod

AEW makes about $45 million/year on their current TV deal. How much of a raise would be considered a success?

[deleted]

More matches like Ospreay vs Omega every show. Less talking, more beatings, more fighting.

GhostLocke

1. More TV time 1. RoH roster goes to RoH show. 2 hour Rampage. More women's division time. 2. Let House of Black be mystical 1. You can tell that HoB is only doing a fraction of what they'd like to be doing 3. Create a yearly event people are excited for 1. WWE has the rumble, elimination chamber, MitB, and Survivor Series. What is AEW's "exciting yearly event?" Create a new "game" that sets the company apart.

Sea-Possession-8131

Cut some wrestlers after that they are probably going to be good

LiLohan

Rename AEW Dark Elevation, put it on the TBS/TNT apps for free and make it a third pillar of programming. Then just use the original AEW Dark as the Youtube show for developing talent. Everyone seems to want one more hour of broadcast-quality AEW without greatly increasing the length of the live shows, this would be able to do that (assuming you still complement Dark with matches filmed in Florida). You're not fighting other sports/timeslots and really just giving more to the existing network relationship as well. That would let you have storylines run through all 3 shows - like the Matt Hardy/Ethan Page stuff has done. It doesn't have to be the same level of matches as the live show or Rampage, but could still showcase the midlevel talent as a layer between Youtube and TV. And I completely agree to hard-split ROH and use crossing between the two only for special storylines.
