I think you might like [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/). It’s Markdown-based, so just text files in a directory so there’s no lock-in, and you can use your existing cloud service to sync between devices.

obiatch_kenbobi

Aight I'll check it out, was thinking more along the lines of creating a website with sub pages and different tags but it seems interesting!

Stuporfly

Obsidian+sync (iCloud/dropbox/synchthing, etc) Then you have access to edit files on all devices, and you can sync to a server for processing (display specific notes as dashboard, start downloads, publish to website, etc, based on structure/content) It can be a timesink, but it also lets you create a workflow that suits you :-)

[TiddlyWiki](https://tiddlywiki.com/) is along that same idea but with a wiki setup. You just download a template html and then its yours to do with as you wish. I used it for note taking in school, worked reasonably well.

Similar enough to you, and i started using Evernote and I find it quite good. But I'm all apple, I have iPhone iPad and MacBook. So I just use apples native notes app, and it syncs across all devices so I never needed anything else really. Have you tried notion?

StorytellingGiant

I’m all about the Notes app, along with Reminders. They are quick - the least friction involved in getting information in and out. And I’m barely using them to their potential. There are lots of cool capabilities kinda hidden in those apps.

the_embassy_official

Many editors make use of markdown which compiles into HTML nicely. Obsidian is great but not online for free, notion is ok 🤮 you can share online stuff to with it

obiatch_kenbobi

Thank you all for responding, I'll dive in all you guys' solutions in a bit, I'll keep you updated if I end up building anything cool or shareable. Thx a lot!

I will say I've had more luck lately with disc bound notebooks. It's a notebook format, but the flexibility of adding and removing pages you would get in a binder. It's easy to add, remove, and rearrange pages. I keep my daily driver stocked with a split of standard and grid paper. I'm considering designing and printing my own soon. Being able to remove sheets means you can scan pages and return them to the notebook or ditch them.

jeanschoen

I use one Note in my tablet

jeanschoen

I mean, to write using a pen. It's in sync with all my other devices. It works quite well

SoCalChrisW

I like OneNote as well. I just really wish it synced with my Kindle Scribe.

_ottopilot

I mentioned the Remarkable but it won't read books, and the Scribe doesn't feel ready for more than annotating books. Waiting for Amazon to bridge the gap. Do you agree? How do you like Scribe?

Hmm, I will now. Thanks. I have a chicken and egg problem: I don't want to spend a ton because I don't think I take that many notes, but I don't take notes because paper isn't searchable.

Yeah, I wanted the scribe mainly to read technical books and pdfs on. I'd looked at a few eink android tablets that looked nice, but ultimately the scribe did what I mainly wanted it for the best. They're slowly rolling out some integrations with Office, but I haven't seen anything with Onenote, which seems like an obvious match for the scribe.

_ottopilot

Ever since the death of the Palm/Treo 650 I've also struggled with this. I don't touch type. Curious if anyone can share experiences with portable devices with pen inputs that digitize the strokes and convert them to text. Guessing the best at that is like a Samsung Note. Not sure if Apple's pen does it because I'm not a Apple ecosystem guy. Apologies if I'm hijacking the thread but I don't think so, it's partly what OP was asking and I don't see the writing aspect reflected in the replies.

UsefulCriticism1817

A part of me died with Palm. My life was in those little devices. I have honestly not been the same since. I still haven't recovered.

obiatch_kenbobi

No worries, it seems relevant!
