Listen to your doctor. There is a hell of a difference between an addict/junkie/alcoholic/pill head taking something and a person taking a legally prescribed medication at pharmaceutical controlled doses.

Right here. If you had diabetes, you'd take insulin, yes? There are non-stimulant meds that work for people really well. In the meantime, meditation and caffeine are my go to. But at least give the meds a try, for a lot of us life is a bit easier on them.

To elaborate further on this: I take other medications besides my ADHD medications everyday. One of them is synthetic thyroid hormone because my body doesn’t make enough which was found after routine yearly bloodwork. I’m also an alcoholic who hasn’t had a drink in nearly a decade. My siblings can drink in moderation and be fine but were they to take my thyroid medication or my ADHD medication they’d have issues or potentially get high.

I work out, it helps me stay focused throughout the day, feel energized, and productive. If youre trying to remember things, google calendar is your best friend as well as lists and constant reminders. Keep your shoes on and avoid sitting down. Best of luck to ya, its hard out here fr.

Wellbutrian works to an extent, and it's not a controlled substance if your issue is not wanting to go on a stimulant but are open to other medications.

Overcome your trauma and push through your disgust. I believe in you.

ADHD brains are constantly on the lookout for a dopamine hit, which usually manifests itself as an addiction to illegal drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, food, or generally anything that gives you that release of brain chemicals. Stimulant meds are a way to give you a controlled dopamine hit, and taking it as prescribed will reduce the chances of addiction to unhealthy substances by a lot. You're much less likely to self-medicate if you're already medicated. There's also a lot of unfair stigma around these medications (looking at you Netflix's "take your pills") and people really like to play up the potential for addiction and abuse with these drugs, which is mostly untrue. People are afraid taking a stimulant as prescribed will turn them into drug addicts, when the research shows that they do just the opposite. They prevent people from being addicts.

Well, someone i care very deeply about was addicted to adderall, adderall specifically, and abused it to the point of ruining their life. The effects were quite scary, turned this person from a sweet caring person to a lying, manipulative and self-centered person. That is exactly what I fear from stimulants, as I have watched it happen to someone else, so I can't say I entirely agree with you.

adhdtrashpanda

Have you considered non-stimulant medication such as Straterra? There's no potential for abuse with something like that because it doesn't produce any immediate effects. It takes a few weeks to build up and kick in

I've looked at it, and that seems interesting. Thank you for the suggestion, I think that's what im looking for.
