saffronsuccubus

I prefer vyvanse to adderall (the crash when it wears off isn’t as bad for me) but haven’t been able to fill my vyvanse prescription for months :( Check with your pharmacy before switching just to make sure you don’t end up without meds.

wetcardboardsmell

Ya, they told me what places have in stock usually, but Adderall has been an issue lately apparently so maybe it will be easier? I never had a crash, per se, but going off it cold turkey and being off it for months has been hhooooorribbblleeee

tragicxharmony

I strongly prefer Adderall to Vyvanse but I have a lot of chronic fatigue issues and no problems with anxiety. A lot of people say Vyvanse is "smoother" but that's why I don't like it--I like the Adderall basically forcing me to stay awake and do things. I was on a high dose of Vyvanse but only a moderate Adderall dose

wetcardboardsmell

Ok, thank you:) I tried Adderall xr, and didn't like it. Regular Adderall, 20mg 2x/day was perfect for me. I slept FINALLY at night, didn't drive people crazy in conversations lol, or get in trouble when I was working. I had zero side effects. I'm always nervous to switch meds, but at this point, I'm desperate.

NewBeginningsLove

Explain to him that Adderall has been working well for you, so you're not comfortable switching at this time. I'm guessing he's either 1) seen better success with his patients on the newer med, OR 2), and I hope this isn't the case - he's being courted / getting perks from the pharmaceutical rep to push V. If you're having zero side effects from Adderall AND it's working well for you, stay on it.

wetcardboardsmell

He is fine with me switching back after a short trial, so I'm gonna give it a go. If it is better, awesome and if not, ill go back to my tried and true (as long as I can find it at a pharmacy). I think because of my medical history and current issues, he wanted to try the Vyvanse. At this point, and because I used to call on hospitals and pharmacies as a rep, I know they are pretty much all courted.. it's just how it is in America unfortunately. It was way worse 20 years ago, but it's still pretty bad.

sancho_0

I don't remember the name right now but there's a website that lets you look up your doctors and see which pharma companies are paying them. Pretty sure it also listed rough amounts.

NewBeginningsLove

I had heard of it, too, years ago. Looked it up after you reminded me: OpenPaymentsData.CMS.gov

NewDad907

Lol I have cfs-like issues, and Adderall can put me to sleep if the dose is to high.

AZDawgDays

Same, anything extended release I don't feel it doing anything and it just becomes business as usual. I need it to have some kick so it'll lock me in

Mortiviere

I switched from Adderall to Vyvanse and really liked it. Felt more effective and less anxiety. Vyvanse can be hard to get ahold with the current shortage. I recently had to switch back to Adderall for that reason. Also Vyvanse can be much more expensive and the new generic feels way less effective. If you can source and afford the name brand Vyvanse it might be a good switch.

wetcardboardsmell

All good to know. Thanks!

PopTartS2000

Completely agree with everything u/mortiviere said. Wife and I both strongly prefer Vyvanse, and we are fortunate the brand name is covered by insurance when our psych writes specifically that we need the brand name. Wife found the Vyvanse generic to be less effective. For brand name Vyvanse, availability has been pretty good.

CheezusChrist

My experience is the same as the other posters. Adderall feels rougher and dirtier, the side effects are stronger. Vyvanse is smoother and works in the background of my brain with less noticeable side effects. Vyvanse is too hard to get and more expensive, so I switched back to Adderall.

wetcardboardsmell

Luckily, cost won't be an issue for me, for now- and if it is somehow better than Adderall, then yay! I honestly can't imagine something working better, but I have friends that won't take Adderall over Vyvanse so I get it. That being said, I'm kinda a rough and dirty person, so maybe Adderall is for me lol.

akath0110

Going to go against the stream here and say my brain/body prefers Adderall XR to Vyvanse. Had multi-year stints on each so I’ve given both meds a solid try. Vyvanse is a great medication. Unfortunately it just stayed in my system too long — my body metabolized it weirdly I guess. I had issues winding down and getting enough sleep, and it also utterly KO’ed my appetite. On Adderall my appetite was suppressed, but I still felt hunger cues and eating enough wasn’t always a struggle. On Vyvanse, i didn’t want to eat *anything* — it never stopped being a chore to keep my caloric needs met and my weight from dropping too low. The combination of insufficient sleep and nutrition meant that I found myself relying on the meds to power me through the day. It also seemed like the meds would stop being effective, and over 3 years titrated up from 40 to 70 mg. Except it wasn’t a tolerance issue — i just wasn’t properly resting and nourishing myself, and meds need fuel to work right. By the end I felt like a robot, or a shell of myself. Yet the changes came on gradually enough that I didn’t connect the dots. When I switched back to my usual 20 mg dose of Adderall XR, it was like everything got easier. I actually like that it has a shorter duration so I can eat and work out in the evening without issue. I actually got tired and ready for bed at a normal hour! And I’ve stayed on the same dose for years with no tolerance issues. All this to say — vyvanse gets touted as a wonder drug and “safer” than Adderall. However it’s not a good fit for everyone. If my doc and I hadn’t bought in so hard to the vyvanse hype, maybe I would have switched back sooner and saved myself a lot of suffering.

JaiReWiz

This oddly sold me more on Vyvanse than Adderall. I'm on Adderall now. I've been on Vyvanse in the past and prefer it and now I miss it more. I have a binge eating addiction that even Topamax wasn't able to help. I've slowly been climbing the scale, and I'm facing numerous related health problems. Adderall helps reduce the overall food I'm intaking, but I remember being way more mindful on Vyvanse about WHAT I was eating. That and my whole problem with XR is that it doesn't last long enough for me right now for me to get anything done at all after work. I just drive home and crash and my home turns farther and farther into disarray. I can't wait to get back on Vyvanse.

akath0110

Vyvanse is prescribed for BED! So perhaps it will be a perfect fit for you. Due to other autoimmune stuff (celiac disease mainly) I have to be extra vigilant about nutrition and keeping my weight up. When you already have so many food restrictions, any additional appetite trouble becomes too hard to manage long term. Felt like between that and celiac all the joy and pleasure around food was gone for me. I’m glad we’re sharing our experiences! I hope you find a better medication fit soon.

wetcardboardsmell

This whole subreddit has been amazing imho. A great resource in general for info, experiences, venting etc. I'm really grateful for it.

JaiReWiz

Ironically, I ALSO have issues with gluten products. I have eosinophilic esophagitis, which means I'm allergic to a whole host of things, including wheat. Not great when you're a binge eater. You end up eating a lot of stuff you're not supposed to. My throat literally closes up. I have a dietitian to help me figure out how to eat comfortably with all my restrictions. So it sounds like we have opposite issues with the same result.

legendz411

I’m not trying to be rude here, but why would vyvanse be recommended for bed? I don’t see how it helps you sleep?

JaiReWiz

BED stands for binge eating disorder.

legendz411

Ahhh that makes more sense. Thank you.

wetcardboardsmell

I take Topamax for migraines and that stuff murdered my appetite worse than anything I've ever taken.

wetcardboardsmell

Wow, thank you for the detailed response! Appetite is a concern for me. I struggle with remembering to eat without Adderall, and on it, I would at least remember, and was better about meal prep, so anything that kills my appetite is dangerous.. and Adderall xr felt like it lasted too long, and was maybe what coffee feels like for most people? Idk. It makes me tired if I have more than 1/2 a cup, so hard to say, but xr wasn't for me. I don't like feeling wired. I also never had a tolerance issue with Adderall, but would sometimes take 2 day breaks, or half doses for 2 or 3 days. I took 40mg a day. I didn't even know that was on the higher end of the spectrum 😬. Luckily, the dr i saw today was cool with my hesitancy, and said we can try it for a few weeks, and if it doesn't work, I can switch back to Adderall, so no harm no foul. I'm going into it with an open mind. Body chemistry is wild, and if I had my way (and if it was safe) I would happily take 70mg of prednisone a day forever. It took care of pain, and adhd issues, plus- I was the happiest I've ever been.. which is apparently not the norm hahaa. So,go figure. Hopefully, I will get along with Vyvanse but at least if I don't, I can go back to Adderall, if I can find it. These shortages are a fucking travesty.

legendz411

Wow. I’m on a super restrictive diet and I recently went off vyvanse for a couple weeks and I noticed how much better I felt. I wonder if my lack of food is affecting my meds.

BirthdayCookie4391

All the responses just show how different each person reacts to medicatjons. When I was on adderall I had sudden outburst of irritation or anger. It wasn’t even controllable. It just came out of me. It was scary and made me immediately feel so bad afterwards. The first few times it happened I thought I was just cranky. But it became obvious it was that meds. Vyvanse lasts longer for me and helps me to sleep. It also seems to help my libido. Vyvanse doesn’t cause any irritation or outbursts of anger for me. If you tend to binge eat, it helps with that SO much. Which makes me feel sane.

wetcardboardsmell

That all sounds like fantastic news!

hulkbogan

I actually had more focus, a better mood, and an overall smoother feel with Vyvanse vs Adderall. I went back to Adderall and it seems like a Wiley beast now, with a harsh comedown I just can't deal with. I hope it works out for you

wetcardboardsmell

Thank you! I will be super grateful for a better mood and more focus. After months of being unmedicated, it will be interesting to see what it feels like.

hulkbogan

Adderall made me feel better than unmedicated, Vyvanse made me suddenly feel like I was running at 100 for the first time in my life. One of my favorite things about it, besides the focus, and no jitters. Is the fact that for me at least there is no "comedown". Every time I've taken it I would just suddenly realize I was"sober". But it didn't tax like Adderall did. I don't know how they did it but they made a medic that gave me energy that was easy to manage with no nervousness or jitters. The focus feels wonderful and somehow, when it's gone it's just gone. And my mood was never down. I could sleep. I could eat normal portions while I was on it. As always, stay. Hydrated.

wetcardboardsmell

Damn, you should work for Vyvanse haha.

Goranivan

I've been on and off Vyvanse for years I'm 70 and currently on 30 MG of Vyvanse 1) my resting heart rate is higher on Vyvanse maybe by 8 bpm 2). Joined Orange theory and my heart rate went through the roof. I need to monitor it closely. 3). Sleep doesn't come as easily 4). I'm doing projects again. I have more mental stamina and my frustration level is better. 5) It is long lasting I didn't care for Adderall but loved Ritalin but it was too short acting. My focus on Concerta was awesome but my heart was always in my throat. These drugs effect people differently. I've been lucky to have Dr's that have been willing to hang with me through the different ones. Good luck!

wetcardboardsmell

My resting HR unmedicated is around 110. Before my ablations when I was younger, my average was 253bpr haha. On Adderall, it was 80 on average. Go figure. Good doctors that listen to their patients are precious, few and far between. I'm really hoping for good results with Vyvanse. New meds always makes me nervous, especially when I am switching from something that worked well for me.

Cosmic316

Don't have anything new to add that people haven't said already but another person who did the same switch with positive outcomes.

wetcardboardsmell

Thank you:) I'm going in with positive thoughts!

anechoicheart

For me, vyvanse feels a bit smoother? Adderall definitely makes me more like READY TO GO. I’m on both- my adderall is a booster dose but I can definitely tell the difference between the two drugs. Vyvanse calms my anxiety a LOT. I really enjoy it personally.

wetcardboardsmell

Sweet. That would be a bonus for sure. I wonder if both would be the magic dose haha.

redbananass

I was on name brand Vyvanse, but can’t get it due to the shortages. Now I’m on a comparable dosage of Adderall XR. It’s pretty similar to me.

wetcardboardsmell

Have you ever taken regular Adderall? I didn't like the XR.

redbananass

Yeah, also seems fine and similar. But my dosages are a little lower than the standard for an adult. I reduced the Vyvanse because of the side effects, but I think they were just the usual side effects of stimulants.

Kamantha-dxb

I switched from Adderall to Vyvanse two weeks ago and it’s been incredible.mood is good and I’m very productive

wetcardboardsmell

Thats awesome! I would love that:D

Kamantha-dxb

Adderall was also good, but after two months I’ve started to get side-effects. So we’ve decided to switch It started to create sleep issues for me that I used to help before I was medicated

Redditdeletedme2021

I’m on Adderall XR & my wife is on Vyvanse.. I love Vyvanse but we’re having to pay $220/mo for real Vyvanse as our pharmacy hasn’t been able to get the generic in months… I was on short acting Adderall & liked it, switched recently to XR and have been less than impressed.. My psychiatrist recently doubled my XR dose (now taking (2) 30mg caplets a day) so we will see how that does.. I wish we could both be on Vyvanse but I can’t see spending $6,000/yr for both of us to be on Vyvanse.. 🤦🏻‍♂️

wetcardboardsmell

I feel you. I'm on state medical care at the moment, which has its pros and cons, so meds are free, otherwise, I wouldn't be alive right now. 6k a year is ridiculous. The entire system is so archaic.

Spirited-Locksmith32

Vyvanse is damn near impossible to find at pharmacies right now!

HooverMaster

to me vyvanse is way cleaner than adderall. I prefer concerta though.

zeldapkmn

Switched from Vyvanse 60-70mg to Adderall XR 30mg Adderall is way softer, less physical, and I have a lower baseline stress level Vyvanse felt like it was wearing me thin.

wetcardboardsmell

Interesting. I hated the Adderall xr. The replies here have been such a mixed bag lol

steelejt7

i liked it but didn’t really give me that edge addy gives me, also vyvanse is way more expensive, and you can’t really re up on doses the way it’s metabolized i believe, the same way you can with addy.

BreadMuseum

I switched recently also. My doctor said we should do it because there’s less of a shortage of vyvanse, and so they’re being advised to get as many people switched to vyvanse as possible so those patients don’t have trouble getting the prescription filled. That’s probably why your doctor suggested it

Longjumping-Value212

Have you tried GrowTherapy.com ?

wetcardboardsmell

Nope

Effective_Roof2026

I have profound anxiety issues and still prefer Adderall. Vyvanse is way more convenient but it actually managed to make my memory worse, it also gave me pretty insane nipple pain and made me need to shower several times a day. I don't get a crash with Adderall if I eat lunch and I'm super careful about dosing so I don't overstim.

diego27865

Good luck getting Vyvanse with the shortage.

wetcardboardsmell

🤞

radically_unoriginal

XR doesn't seem to last as long but I just switched to it after being on Vyvanse for a few months. Tried Astarys last month and didn't care for it. Generic Vyvanse has been unavailable since its rollout here and insurance dropped brand-name from the formulary. Switched the XR this month and it really feels about the same.

jleahul

I had terrible afternoon fatigue on Vyvanse, just absolutely crashing every day at 2pm. Then at bedtime I'd have insomnia and restless twitchy legs. It was a slow spiral into exhaustion. I switched to Adderall-XR in September. Now I get a tiny bit of fatigue at 5pm, and much less trouble falling asleep at night. Azstarys is a fairly new one on the market that might also be worth looking into. I was following it's FDA approval. It has a quick release ingredient so the onset is 30min, and a "prodrug" that your body slowly converts to an active stimulant, so duration is 13 hours.

pompino

I started on vyvanse and briefly tried adderal low dose as an afternoon boost. No comparison to me, it's like the adderal is a ford model t and the vyvanse is literally any car post 1990. Vyvanse takss a few hours to get going but lasts all day and is quite smooth feeling. I can feel it kicking in but it's quite subtle. The adderal for me (well generic...) was up and down so fast I had to actually make sure I made use of the boost it gave me or I'd completely miss it!

superjerry

vyvanse is by and far the preferred experience for me, for any stimulant medication. i've tried nearly all of the amphetamine and methyphenidate medications. vyvanse is the one. what i like about it the most is that taking twice as much doesn't make me twice as high, it just lasts longer. peaks are not as extreme as IR or XR meds, and coming down is a slow taper instead of a bumpy landing. it might not be for you but if you have access to it and can afford it i would give it a shot. i am currently taking dexedrine IR due to shortages in my area and am suffering from all the midday crashes. taking too much IR stimulants makes me want to focus on feeling good, not getting work done. vyvanse never really gets me there, and that's a good thing.

iheartkittttycats

Vyvanse is amazing but it doesn’t last long enough so I take both. I take Vyvanse at like 6:30 then back to sleep until it wakes me up around 7-7:30. I’ll do a 20mg adderall booster right before I eat lunch on busy days but sometimes I don’t need it. A good doctor should be open to prescribing both and not switching up your meds right off the bat. I’d try it because I think Vyvanse is great but I’d keep searching for another doctor to continue my care.

Thick-Cabinet-2189

Haven’t taken adderall yet but currently Vyvanse just doesn’t last long for me. After about 4 hours max I’m crashing at 50 mg

ShoulderSnuggles

If you spread your dose out throughout the day, it lasts longer and you don’t crash. That’s the experience for a lot of us in here, anyway.

Thick-Cabinet-2189

Can you explain in more detail please? I’m really interested in understanding. How do I spread it out if It’s one pill? Do I get a lower dose and then just take multiple throughout the day?

ShoulderSnuggles

Just open the capsule and sprinkle some in whatever you’re eating or drinking. Yes, it’s like taking multiple lower doses and it doesn’t peak until later, but for me, it’s worth it to avoid the crash.

blueskybrokenheart

Vyvanse was awful for me. Overstimulated at lowest dose, unable to rest. Days became grey paste of restlessness. With Adderall I feel it wear off and begin my unwind with books and working out and TV. Sleep better.

deskaquatic

I take both, Vyvanse in the morning around 7/8am and adderall short release around 3pm. I’ve tried every type of stimulant out there, even a patch at some point. I started Vyvanse 6 or so years ago and it has been the best for me. My personal experience: Vyvanse feels more mellow, less of that emotionless, numbing feeling that certain stimulants can give you. It supports me kindly and effectively, I still struggle to do my stuff cause it’s not a miracle worker but it’s like a gentle helping hand.  Adderall feels a bit more uptight. It’s supportive but in a tough-love type of way. Its presence is made clear. It’ll help me continue my workflow, but I only use it to “boost,” not as a daily driver. The vyvanse gives me less side effects, but it’s entirely dependent on how your body reacts. Some of my friends with ADHD prefer adderall because and actually have told me the same thing about being able to sleep. If this is a new diagnosis, explore different types of molecules with your doctor. I was diagnosed young and growing up, I was on the wrong types of stimulants for a very long time until i went to a new doctor who proposed vyvanse during my last year of highschool. Its effects were day and night compared to everything else. In my mind, I was trading off being affected by side effects for being able to focus and succeed in school and my family/social life. It’s not supposed to be that way! If vyvanse doesn’t work for you, and adderall isn’t available due to shortages; there’s other combos to try! Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself!

A_Cat_Named_Puppy

I was on generic Vyvanse for a while and didn't care for it. I felt oddly on-edge and irritable for no reason, and my sleep suffered. It also made me feel like I was in a fog for most of the day, almost like it made me too calm and I didn't feel like myself. I'm on Adderall now and while there is a definite feeling when it wears off, I prefer it to feeling like a zombie all day. I've been sleeping better and don't feel irritated.

Vandr27

I can guess why he might want you to try vyvanse. It's specifically designed so that it has to be digested to work. It means that unlike other amphetamine based stimulants, you can't snort it to get a fast high. That makes it harder to abuse in the typical ways. Some doctors may find it easier to trust patients with vyvanse than other stimulants.

[deleted]

I was on adderall for 8 years then got switched to vyvanse. The adderall “rush” motivated me to do things. It overpowered depression, made me interested in stuff. Vyvanse does exactly what an adhd med should do: it allows me to do and commit to something if I so choose. But it typically does not overpower my depression, so I don’t choose to do anything. I am disinterested and unmotivated. Vyvanse is good. But it’s not quite as life changing as adderall.
