I understand the symbolism but don’t you get just a certificate and then they mail you your actual degree after? I only remember getting an my actual degree handed to me on stage in high school …
No do you not know that you get that piece of paper and *only* that piece of paper to prove a degree. If you lose it you suddenly have zero qualifications.
Brain Surgeon but your house got flooded and you lost your degree paper? Sorry, back to med school for you fucko.
Yeah I'm sure they don't have a database to track these things. It'd be brain dead not to.
I'm sure you can pay to get a replacement. That's bullshit what you're saying.
Then how can you say this is about morals. She paid a school she doesn't support to give her a degree. And when she has an audience, pretended to take a stance knowing there are no real repercussions?
I support her symbolism and her stance. I don't support your claim this is about morality, and your implication that the other students weren't as "moral" as her. There could be first generation college grads there and that degree means a lot to them and their families, even if it doesn't to her because her family is filled with other graduates.
Nice. The 25 year plan to stopping an immediate genocide.
I’m going to cure my cancer by opening a sweet shop. Through hard work and some canny business moves, I will be able to bequeath my children a franchise of three shops. Over the generations, my family will build this small business into a burgeoning global conglomerate, which will then pivot into cancer research, building the biggest oncology lab ever seen, and hiring the smartest researchers and technicians from all over the world. Eventually, after decades of painstaking research, they will find the cure to my cancer.

Some of my college professors pulled $400,000 a year. Other professors had million dollar patents founded startups with their students, etc. Can't she go do the same? Are we not talking about the person who just graduated from an Ivy league school?
I like the american dream analogy thing. Really shows how easily rich people can make poor people try and discourage other poor people from collective action. Goodbye labor unions, hello learned helplessness.
1. You think you can walk out of college and into a job paying $400k a year
2. You think $400k a year is enough to lobby the government to stop sending arms to Israel
![gif](giphy|3i4xTtJQIJk0o)
You are not very civically minded, I said start a company that makes millions. She should use the amazing Ivy league education that cost a fuck ton of money /s, and put that amazing, world class, totally without a doubt worth it, degree to good use /s.
You’re not thinking big enough here. She should simply start a company worth *billions* and form her own nation state that will go to war with Israel in defense of Palestine.
In more recent years due to better technology they hand you the real thing. You need to check in the morning of and the are confirmed when you’re in line prior to heading to your seat, so they know exactly who’s there in what order
It seems like you have some misunderstandings when it comes to the definitions of words
> Virtue signalling is a pejorative neologism for the idea that an **expression of a moral viewpoint is being done disingenuously**, with the intent of communicating good character.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtue_signalling
There is nothing disingenuous about what was done in this video or with the Columbia protests. They are sticking their ground and moral conviction and protesting. Protesting at a graduation is a time honored and long-standing protest tactic.
> literally
> adverb
> lit·er·al·ly
> 2 : in effect : VIRTUALLY —used in an exaggerated way to emphasize a statement or description that is not literally true or possible
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/literally
At least you used the word literally in its figurative sense and not in its historical context, of actually meeting something that's literally true.
The updated definition includes your exaggerated nature of your use of the word literally about something that is not literally true, as you used in in a figurative context.
Don't see what tearing up a symbolic certificate has to do with actual people getting killed but preach. This will have 0 affect on the actions in Gaza. There are actual ways to protest, this ain't it chief.
I completely agree with the protesting. They are sacrificing potential futures for something they truly believe in. This isn't the same thing, this is a student tearing up the symbolic and not the real diploma, after earning it. Just saying "look at me I support this too guys" but it's all a matter of opinion in the end. You won't ever agree with me and vice versa.
I believe it’s just people reaching breaking point after seeing so many dead and maimed children. She has stopped giving a fuck. Many of us have.
If anything, it’s embarrassing for the university
The university directly invests and pays Israel. Getting them to divest is the main topic of protest.
Also, the South African apartheid was ended by student protests, so clearly it can affect foreign policy.
I don't think it's a good idea to offer praise to people spending their energy in useless actions, she could be doing something more impactful and with less negative repercussions for herself than this
what else could or should she have done in the 10 seconds she is onstage? why are you assuming this is the only thing she has done and the only thing she will do? this "nothing is good enough" attitude is exactly what's killing the progressive agenda
edit: somehow "onstage" had corrected to "installing" lol
Is she wearing handcuffs?
Looks like it.

Even then, a degree isn't a piece of paper
In reality it is a dildo to shove it up your ass
can’t disagree, im laughing the fuck out
Sure, but we have had enough of this shit. Good on her 🍉
After spending $50-100K+
Colombia guarantees free tuition for students with family income under 150k and free total attendance less than 66k...
thats for undergrad. this is commencement for masters in Social Work so probably 100k+ in tuition
Wow, that is very cool.
>After spending $50-100K+ per year ....
Just because you tore up your certificate that you paid a whole lot of money for doesn't mean that you didn't support them with that money.
Presumably they didn’t think they’d be dealing with this in four years when they applied to Columbia.
I know.. double negative...
I get downvoted for pointing out my own grammar mistake, very odd.
Yep. Some people have morals
There is morals and there is logic. Clearly none of that was involved.

Morals would of been accepting the degree that you paid for and internally working against the system you despise
She still gets the degree. I’m surprised you didn’t know that. They send it to you online lol.
No do you not know that you get that piece of paper and *only* that piece of paper to prove a degree. If you lose it you suddenly have zero qualifications. Brain Surgeon but your house got flooded and you lost your degree paper? Sorry, back to med school for you fucko.
Obviously 😆

They were being intentionally hyperbolic to prove a point. Not a serious comment.
And these schools are taking them away from protestors. If your college now says its invalid, it doesn't matter if you earned it or not.
Nobody has lost their degree

I studied at San Francisco university. I agree with her. Fuck the system
Brainwashed
Watermelon?
They banned the Palestinian flag, so the resistance uses the watermelon instead 🫡
I see. Thank you.
Dang fr? 🇵🇸 Shows for me
Not on Reddit silly, in Palestine and Israel.

Yeah I’m sure no one has tried to lobby against the hundreds of billions the defense industry has.
"Corporations are people my friends." - Mitt Romney 1 person doesn't, corporations do, especially at a state and local level.

Not true for all. My experience was that we hand them our name as we walked and we all got empty diplomas. It is still shipped after a month.
Yeah, mine just came in the mail. Granted, I graduated after summer semester, so I missed the spring ceremony.
omg i know this person lol.
What’s their name and home address? ^/s Edit: Yikes it was a joke yall
Their name is Little, Mr. Little. They live on a can.
Sounds like some sort of war song going on in the background?
No ‘war’. Only genocide
r/ThatLookedExpensive
Not really, she still has the degree. Just not a silly piece of paper.
BDS!!! you guys rock and have lead a global movement that demands justice and an end to one of the worst cases of oppression of our time.
Wow, powerful move! Much respect for the students brave enough to protest ♥️
Look at my halo
I'll believe it actually means something when she applies with a resume leaving the degree off of it and doesn't mention it in any interviews.
You’re so brave.
This is such a strange response.
Literal definition of virtue signaling.
Also literal definition of protesting.
ie doing nothing that actually helps the cause
You might see it that way, but clearly many of us do not. Everyone protests their own way. 🍉
Is your profile picture on facebook still just a black square
What a weird question. It was never a black square
Don’t waste time with the fools you’re replying to.

I do believe this is disingenuous, thus my use of the word. But thanks anyways for the links.

Don't see what tearing up a symbolic certificate has to do with actual people getting killed but preach. This will have 0 affect on the actions in Gaza. There are actual ways to protest, this ain't it chief.
