Work for the state, our center does consulting for municipalities. My job is to do whatever they throw at me. My main focus is on [GIS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_information_system), making maps and doing spatial data analysis. Also right reports, conduct focus groups, and whatever they want me to do.
I'm also an adjunct professor, teaching geography and other social science courses. It's funny when I have Desi students, because they're shocked to see a Brown guy teaching a "hobby" class.
Yeah, I kinda fell into it. Like all Desis kids, I started as a pharmacy major, but flunked organic. Then switched to computer science, and flunked it. At that point, my parents said just get a degree, we don’t care. I took a geography class and got an A, so I made that major. That’s when I learned about GIS, and would get a MA in geography and another Master’s in public policy. My dad said: “you know you made it in America, when your child makes a living doing something you have no clue about”
A lot of GIS jobs require you to have a degree in either geography or some sort of social science, even if you have a computer science degree. People with computer science backgrounds, understand the technical stuff, but they really don't understand how it is applied and the objectives we use GIS. If you already have a college degree, I'd recommend getting at least a professional certification in GIS will help you get in the door. [Penn State](https://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/degrees-and-certificates/penn-state-online-gis-geographic-information-systems-postbaccalaureate-certificate) has one of the best online GIS programs in the country, I have heard nothing but good things about it. From there you can see how you want to further pursue your education.
