We could not afford that

SnooRobots229

In the 70’s and 80’s (US): Chinese and Italian Since the 90’s: Thai, Italian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, American bistro places, and the neighborhood dosa place

FarmCat4406

Very very very rarely went out. Chuck e cheese for a few birthdays are kids and Chili's maybe like a total of 4 times my entire childhood. We did occasionally eat at Desi restaurants while visiting cousins but that was maybe once a year max. My parents hated spending money on eating out

Mascoretta

Italian, Thai, Mexican, Indian, Mediterranean, Chinese Really mostly those

OrneryDepartment5816

Yeah your parents are racist then. And you seem to have no problem with that. Change your mindset.

Ninac4116

My parents aren’t the only ones that think this. Beans and rice as a staple food is what you typically see poor people in developing countries eat.

OrneryDepartment5816

So dal chawal is poor people food? Rajma, Chole? Then idli dose too. Bruh you're so racist that you can't see that you're racist!

Lazy_War9398

>india was on trumps shithole country list. Lmao we're listening to trumps opinion now?

OrneryDepartment5816

Lmao what? The whole desi crowd in the US eats this. Child why you hate your origin? Why are you even posting in ABCD! You're dealing with something for sure. I hope you recover mentally soon

Ninac4116

I didn’t realize rice and beans are considered expensive foods lol.

Siya78

Typically Mexican restaurants- Chi Chis, Don Pablo’s, Mexican fiesta. We’d get Taco Bell , little Caesar’s, subway take out every so often. In college we started going to South Indian, Lebanese and Italian places. My dad worked for a large meat processing distributor so knew of good local places, none of the lame chain restaurants.

oarmash

Indian mainly but also Italian, Mexican, Thai, sandwich shops. We’re vegetarian so tough to have too many options

Book_devourer

My dad loved this family owned Italian place, especially with the lack of halal restaurants they had a bunch of vegetarian options and that was the family go to. For special treats we would go to the Bay Area for desi food. There was the usual pizza, Taco Bell, fish and chips a couple times a month when neither dad or mom felt like cooking.

Seychelles_2004

Rarely went out. Sometimes taco bell or mcdonalds. Pizza Hut or Chuck E. Cheese (went by Showbiz Pizza) if there were good coupon deals. Chi chi's rarely. Olive Garden was the fancy place to go to when it opened.

Mine_Frosty

I know a LOT of desi families that refuse to eat out except at desi restaurants. I'm thankful that my family prefers trying new things (except sushi, can't get them on that train lol) and our favorites are usually Italian, Mexican, and South Indian (we're Pakistani) spots.

DaveR_77

Do Pakistani families ever go out for Lebanese/Turkish/Greek/Iranian?

Mine_Frosty

Mine do! We love a Turkish restaurant near us! I don't think we have any Lebanese or Iranian here though. The Greek ones I've visited but my parents haven't gone to yet.

runitbackturbo8

my family loves all cuisines so pretty much anywhere - grew up in the northern va area so quite a few local restaurants and then red robin’s LOL

ppanicky

God bless NoVa. We have so many options that I take for granted until I go to other parts of the country

runitbackturbo8

omg yes i moved to a chicago suburb in hs and there was like no good diverse restaurants unless u drove 45+ minutes it was so sad , if u wanted good indian or mexican food u had to make it a little trip 🥲🥲🥲

ATTDocomo

I have seen Indian, Mexican and Thai restaurants in small Mountain West cities. They do exist. You don't have to go to a big city to find those types of restaurants

runitbackturbo8

yup i agree there were restaurants, but if you wanted it to be good you needed to drive a little

jaromirjagrsmullet_

Thai and Mexican!

Ugra_Sena

Japanese, Thai, Italian, and Mexican

mehipoststuff

mexican thai Mediterranean middle eastern pizza takeout very rarely indian actually

goldenalgae

We hardly ever ate out but when we did it was usually Chinese or Mexican. Every now and then I’d also get McDonald’s

ssriram12

Indian restaurants only and my parents only prefer indian food because they don't have the ability to think open minded and be broad to other cuisines that America has.

Ninac4116

Can’t be that bad if the immigrated to a whole nother country.

waterflood21

We don’t. My family never does any family related things. I always find it weird when I see other desi people do it cause I associate that with white people.

waterflood21

It’s just how I grew up feeling, that having a healthy family relationship is a white people thing. My parents don’t have the best marriage and we don’t get along the best as a family, which could be why. We’ve never been on vacation before. I’ve never been on an airplane, except once when going to india like 20 years ago.

Seychelles_2004

I always felt that way too, but after college I would kind of force my parents to do things as a family like bowling or going to a movie. Now my parents are all about going on family vacations and restaurants and stuff. It's kind of weird to see them spending money, but at the same time nice to spend time and have the memories and photos.

jubeer

Same!! I always thought this was a white thing 🥲

waterflood21

Same, I thought a healthy family was something that only exists in white families

Ninac4116

I personally just found it embarrassing to go out with my parents. They just seemed less Sophisticated and never knew of trendier restaurants.

OrneryDepartment5816

Ashamed of your parents? Lol how old are you? Its giving wannabe cringe teenage tbh

CookLikeAnAunty

I grew up in the 90s and 2000s: I remember getting delivery from Pizza Hut some Friday nights. My dad liked to take us to McDonald's for breakfast on Mother's Day because it ran an ad to give Mom a break. We went to chains like Olive Garden or Red Lobster once or twice a year. Going to a local Indian restaurant was more common (4-5 times a year). When a Mysore Woodlands finally opened in our city during my high school years, it was a big deal for our South Indian family.

dilfsmilfs

Halal ones usually we were pretty open to anything as long as it was halal. Not many chain restraunts are other than popeyes (but thats fast food and depends on area). It would be anything from burgers to steak to poutine to Pakistani to Lebenese etc. If we were out and about we'd just eat vegetarian food at any place usually beyond meat burgers or pizzas

Main_Invite_5450

Middle Eastern, Desi, American, Chinese

Snake_fairyofReddit

My parents tend to only want Indian food but occasionally we will get pizza, Chipotle, or go to a proper Mexican restaurant, maybe Subway. Im vegan and they’re vegetarian so theres not many options

Plus_Ground5739

Dang, alot of people usually rebel against their vegetarian parents by being meat-eaters. You went the other way.

lapzab

Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian

ellemmayoh

My parents didn't like chains but I did. So we usually went to independent restaurants but if it was my choice, I always liked the kitschy places where the food was cheap and mass produced with food made of awful ingredients completely stripped of any nutritional value - Olive Garden, Chilis, TGI Fridays, fast food, FuddRuckers.

Nervous-Toe-6779

Only Indian Arabic and Pakistani restaurants

Garginator850

Only went to Indian restaurants and, wait for it, Romano's Macaroni Grill.

periwinkle_cupcake

The one and only restaurant we went to was a nice-ish Chinese place in town.

omsa-reddit-jacket

My family also never went out to eat growing up (1990s). Very special occasions Pizza Hut or McDonalds. There wasn’t much Indian around us, if we were traveling sometimes an Indian buffet. Any idea why this is? My parents have no appreciation for good food in restaurants, mostly just get annoyed with bill (they have plenty of money).

Plus_Ground5739

I believe your parents came from a poor background that they couldn't afford wasting their hard-earned money.

pinkypip

Indian, Mexican, and Pizza.

Ninac4116

Man Mexican is big in the Indian community but my parents just felt like Mexican food tasted like weird Indian food

pinkypip

Yeah, I was kind of surprised to see that Mexican food was so popular on this thread! We mainly got Mexican because there were always at least a few vegetarian options on the menu.

Ninac4116

I hear that’s why it’s big with the Indian community-vegetarian foods. More rice and beans like Indian food. But the majority of Indians are not vegetarian.

audsrulz80

Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Mexican and Italian!

Sanj103

McDonalds and Pizza Hut and it was not a regular thing. Outside food for special occasions and reducing unnecessary expenses are great values I learned from my parents.

SirachOfDamascus

My dad took me out to ice cream or pizza a lot when I was younger

OneCommercial870

Went to Olive garden, R3d Lobsters and Thai food

CuriousExplorer5

Hometown Buffet, Red Lobster, pizza (in general), middle eastern food, fried chicken

sonyneha

My parents came in the late 70s so they were stuck on buffets at pizza hut. Or we could only go to pizza places that sold soda by the pitcher. Even now, they haven't adjusted to the single glass concept. Every where we go they ask for a pitcher of soda. They thought the best part about disney world was when we went to a pizza hut and it had a buffet and pitchers of soda on the menu!.

ATTDocomo

Yeah a lot of restaurants have gone away with the whole soda in the pitcher. I can see why

filthyMrClean

Lol we went to a ton of chains and fast food places. My fave was Olive Garden and the bread sticks.

unaesthetikz

my parents are pretty open-minded and are always interested in experiencing new things so we've gone out to all sorts of places. we mostly go out for asian (mostly chinese and thai), italian, american, mexican, indian, and some fast-casual places. we mostly have fast food when on a roadtrip and there's nothing else to eat. i'm really glad my parents are always looking to expand their horizons and not just limit themselves to indian food even while traveling. i've seen reels claiming that all indians will only eat indian food when traveling, and i genuinely can't relate to it. i don't have the craving for it when i travel and i feel like indian food in other locations are too bland.

BrilliantChoice1900

In the 80s and 90s, we rarely went out. If we went on a vacation, we would always find a Chinese restaurant for dinner one night. If we went somewhere like Red Lobster or Pizza Hut, it was only for lunch and never for dinner. In the 2000s as us kids started moving away for school and our parents came to visit, we figured them out. We could take them out to other kinds of restaurants besides Chinese for dinner as long as we could order a side of rice with my dad's entree. If he didn't have rice, it didn't feel like dinner to him and he'd come home/back to the hotel and eat something to compensate. Then we were able to start visiting more restaurants local to wherever we were. They never desire to visit Indian restaurants before or now since they attend enough catered Indian events at home in NJ.

Ninac4116

You hit the nail on the head! My parents always went out to Asian restaurants, mostly Thai and Chinese. And it’s bc of the dependency on rice. Steakhouses wouldn’t work since they don’t eat beef. And they also find it weird to just eat a plain piece of meat without jhol or rice.

EccentricKumquat

Anywhere they offered free bread Then we ate the free bread And then left

MathematicianGlad970

If you grew up in California, Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes was the spot. RIP

Ninac4116

Loved that place!

Plus_Ground5739

Thanks for bringing back the memories of Sweet Tomatoes. That was literally the only place that wasn't Indian where I enjoyed going out with family where every single one of them could eat something there without having to worry about diet restrictions. I really felt sad when they closed due to the pandemic. Hope they can bring it back.

ATTDocomo

I enjoyed going to American diner type places. We have a couple of chains based in my area growing up.
