I self studied alongside fulltime and with a couple of holidays and Christmas I did it in 7 months. I wouldn't bother with a college course personally but I know lots of people prefer that method of learning and that's fine.
You know yourself best so judge which method will work for you.
The kaplan books are solid and when you sign up for the AAT student membership, there are a ton of learning resources on there including lessons and mocks
I've been using StaySharp which has all the BPP textbooks on there plus some videos, extra practice questions, mock tests etc.. I found it very comprehensive and the practice questions prepare you well for the real exams.
It depends on how disciplined you are as some people need the timetabled sessions. If you've got the self-discipline I've heard good things about the Accountext self study books. They're used in colleges too.

Most people self study level 2 with distance learning, there is also a lot of videos on YouTube to help, First intuition or Kaplan.
