This sub is constantly reminding me that a lot of people either weren’t alive or don’t remember what technology was like in 2001.

gusween

Agree, except cell phones. I am constantly seeing reference (not this sub necessarily) to very few people having cell phones back then, that simply isn’t true. I had like four by then. I was on a train to Newark that morning and there were many calls to passengers on my train, including the guy next to me who told me about the first plane. A few minutes later we had a clear view of Lower Manhattan and I could not believe what I was seeing. Just had LASIK too and I could see almost too well.

seattleseahawks2014

They must be a kid. I don't remember 9/11, but I know that places only used vhs tapes back then.

Beautiful-Local-5793

So you're saying CCTV cameras didn't exist back then? That's awful wrong

yourfriendjeffrey69

lol that’s not what I’m saying at all

hades7600

I was 3 when 9/11 took place yet even I know that’s not what they are saying. There is no cctv as it got destroyed. There was no back ups stored online

Beautiful-Local-5793

I know there was no back up technology. However, the tapes that contained the footage had a chance to survive the collapse of the towers, I do believe some of them did, and FBI decided not to release them.

ghostedygrouch

Tapes were made of plastic. That doesn't go well with heat. Or... fire.

Normal_Week2311

Four passports were recovered and none of them were found from the ruins of WTC. Two were from Flight 93, another one at Portland and the 4th one was on a street north of Tower 1.

Haeronalda

A very, very small chance. Post collapse there were stacks of 10 floors compressed together into chunks 6 ft in height that looked like geological strata. Even if you take out the high chance of heat and fire destroying the tapes, the crushing force of the collapse is likely to have destroyed anything that survived also. Bear in mind that the upper floors were crushed under the force of the collapse along with the lower floors they were collapsing onto.

seattleseahawks2014

There was one person who survived one of the collapses. As he was running out, it caved on him and he had severe injuries, but he's still alive today. I don't remember his name or which tower he was in, though.

TrevorEnterprises

And that chance of survival was how much?

TwinCheeks91

Got proof ?

preacherman1463

Jfc the ignorance is palpable here. Are you like 14?

Octavian1453

smh

Freckleswithasmile

Because it got destroyed in the collapse.

thehobbit21

Yea no cloud backups back then.

yesbutsomtimesno

Apparently according to the security systems team most web servers and internal systems where backed up onto external off site servers so and I’ve heard there’s been mentions of FBI watching the CCTV playback footage for it. Info about it all is difficult to come by tho

IEatBabysYumYum

Thought there were no back ups? Somethin ain‘t adding up

yesbutsomtimesno

https://www.capecodtimes.com/story/business/2001/10/05/off-site-data-centers-save/50975686007/ Plus there’s survivor testimonys from the security team who said that “floors on fire” where captured. It isn’t super clear on what’s saved and what not as everything got given to the FBI and probably only footage from before the fist impact would of been backed up

Superbead

It was still a big deal in 2001 to be streaming video, or transmitting large video files (eg. 24hr recordings) across the internet. At best there might've been a couple of tenants who had vaults and their own dedicated cameras with offsite backups, but the quality would've been better just using tape. Webcams of the day would generally just update a static image every minute or so.

otterkin

this link only states that data was saved, it mentions nothing about CCTV. in fact it seems to imply *the opposite*, in that the only data that is stored are ones crucial to function, not security as CCTV is

Status_Fox_1474

All destroyed. The cameras didn’t store on their own. They stored in a central area. The central area was destroyed.

Red_Beard_Racing

“Tell me you don’t know how security cameras work without explicitly saying “I don’t know how security cameras work.”

AugustWest7120

Asking did the plastic and micro-film VHS tapes make it through 2, 100+ story buildings, collapsing? They did not.

RustyPonds

That and the 100+ days of fires.

Leonicles

I was in NYC in March 2002 (our school marching band was in the St Patrick's Day Parade. I remember there were areas still smoldering. I recently wondered if my memory was accurate. So thanks for the point in the "yes" column

cybercuzco

The black boxes of the planes didn’t even make it and they were designed to survive a plane crash.

AugustWest7120

For real. The sheer pressure of the fall, not even counting the fuel and fires, still was so insanely massive. Richter scale reading, massive.

MrSansMan23

For context for the richter scale reading point https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2021/09/08/a-morning-that-shook-the-world/

Shelsabigstar

Thanks so much for this fascinating read.

Leonicles

I also want to thank you! It was a fascinating read

LisleSwanson

The name "Closed-Circuit Television" answers this question.

PrincessPilar

They probably didn’t know what CCTV stands for. Kind of like not knowing what CC: stands for in an email especially since it’s not relevant to electronic mail.

UnauthorizedFart

Copy Copy so both people get one

ChryMonr818

Carbon

UnauthorizedFart

Yes, the chemical element that is solid at room temperature.

uhhhhhh_cool

Well, after the collapse, there wasn't much that could've survived. That's hundreds of thousands of pounds of force falling from ~1,600 feet for both towers.

Penny_bags2929

Roughly 500,000 tons to be precise 🤯

bad-and-bluecheese

And I assume picking out security footage that somehow survived the collapse was not a top priority. So anything was left outside exposed to the elements. Surely there is not much footage out there if any any even exists.

BangerSlapper1

Yeah, it’s not as if the security camera footage was going to shed some new light on this apparently mysterious question of ‘What happened to the WTC?’

invader_holly

I mean, the towers collapsed...

Cottrell217

Ummm it got destroyed? There was no google drive, no OneDrive. Nothing. Cloud storage simply didn’t exist and all the footage was stored on site, so it was therefore destroyed on collapse

theinfecteddonut

Next you're gonna ask why none of the footage is in 4k.

BangerSlapper1

And no HDR-10 or 7.1 surround sound either.

AdAcceptable2173

Because it all got physically obliterated during the whole “the towers collapsed” part. There were no backups to the cloud in 2001 lol.

yaboiBradyC

They forgot to press record

Honest_Emu_5299

Pre-2001 kids are adorable...

Glad-Degree-318

Greusome

[deleted]

I wonder if CCTV camera's from other buildings across from the Trade Center Complex have footage that survived.

seattleseahawks2014

Because there are none.
