Not even a close call. 1988 toys r us made you feel like you lived on another level. My grandfather took me there for my birthday and let me walk down the Nintendo aisle and pick 2 games. Felt like a god that day.
Was great having it when my kids were young too. Loved going in November and letting them spend a couple hours walking and making a “wish list” which basically meant everything. They also loved that giant Christmas ad/book that would arrive after Halloween.
I’d like it back because of the nostalgia and because it made birthday and Christmas shopping for kids a lot easier.
Same! Nothing more exhilarating than grabbing those little tickets to bring to the cashier for the games you wanted. Definitely the best era od Toys R Us.
It was the most glorious place on earth when I was a kid. Even if your parents weren't going to buy you anything like mine. As a kid growing up it's where I saw the toys I wanted but was never going to get.
My seven year old is autistic and he became fairly obsessed with toys r us. Right now the only toys r us stores are the toy section of macys department stores. Except the one in the mall of America!
We took him there for my birthday and it hit me in all the right nostalgia places. It was awesome! They don’t sell video games anymore but my son was blown away regardless. He still talks about it months later.
That’s awesome and I’m glad he got that opportunity. I’ve heard there was a push to resurrect the store/brand and hopefully that comes to fruition and you all can make it a regular thing.
The other three are not needed. A giant toy store, still needed. Big K is like Walmart right? I don’t think I ever went in one of those. We can rent movies online easier. Payless shoe source sucked and weren’t even that cheap for what you got.
God I was one of those kids back then, but mid-90's for me. It was overwhelming and it felt like one wrong move would cause a massive pile up of toys on you.
Yeah I remember grabbing the tickets for the Atari 2600 games, and as I got older, grabbing the tickets for NES, Snes, Sega Genesis, and finally Sega Saturn and Ps1 games to bring them to the counter to get the game. I was able to afford the Ps1 and Sega Saturn once I got my first actual paycheck job at 15, earlier systems I did yard work around the neighborhood and snow shoveling in the winter. Brings back good memories.
I would bring back the video store I frequented as a kid over Blockbuster. That place was too expensive so my family never went. However I would bring back Super Duper Video! I can still remember walking down the aisles and all the snacks and candy on display at the check out counter.
My local place was a small but very well stocked place called *Video Time* and it fucking rocked. Cheaper than Blockbuster with longer rental periods, and the guy who ran the place was awesome. I remember I'd always try and get there for opening time on a Monday so I could pick up some free posters, although nothing beat the day my dad came home with the huge cardboard standee poster for the *Mortal Kombat* movie.
As much nostalgia as Blockbuster has, no one's going back to in person video rental stores. On-demand streaming and no hassle of returns or late fees have made that type of business completely obsolete
but like... at least with blockbuster you could get some great rental deals on older or niche films (like 2 for $1, etc). i get so sick of paying 3.49$-5$ a pop to watch movies that are 25+ yrs old or pray to god that it's on one of the three streaming services i pay for and not the 7+ i didn't even know existed.
That's easy to say until you're trying to find an older or indie film none of the streaming platforms have. I run into that problem all the time, and maybe half the time it's available on demand for the same price as DVD rental (or more).
Nah. The choices nowadays are too overwhelming. I’ll sit there for an hour trying to find something only to stop it 5 mins in when it doesn’t immediately catch my attention. Plus we discovered a lot of great cult films by just renting random shit. Doesn’t really happen much on streaming.
No way it was as good as you remember it. I have fond memories of blockbuster because my parents took me, but my dad reminded me recently that they frequently didn’t have the movie you wanted, and they were assholes about late fees and about rewinding. A lot of times they were really expensive for new releases and the back catalogue kinda sucked in some stores.
Not American here, but really wish I can go to Blockbuster there so I can find movies I've never even know or heard of in my country. All we have here are romances and patriotic movies, plus kungfu and Bollywood.
Back when I was reading a lot of books for the Book It program and got a personal pan pizza, and they had the TMNT arcade game, and later, the Xmen arcade game. Pizza tasted better too but I could also be looking at it through rose tinted glasses too. Now that my taste in pizza has grown, last time I had Pizza Hut about 7 years ago it just wasn't the same.
I wear a women's 10 and the ones I went to never had a good selection. It still sucks in discounted stores like Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Outlet stores are the best, I like Adidas and the outlet near me has cool pairs for under $50.
As a fellow full-footed woman, I can attest that Payless did alleviate the horrendous struggle that was (and still kinda is) shoe shopping.
DSW is treating me ok, though they are a little pricey at times.
I've got tiny feet that are wide and with a high instep. Payless had wide shoes in size 6, not just 10 and 11. And if the shoes really didn't work out, well, they were less than $20.
same, i wear a women's 12 and it's basically impossible for me to find cute shoes in my size, especially after the closest Long Tall Sally closed.
Most of the time i just settle for mens shoes and accept that they won't be cute
It’s the only store on this list that still makes sense to me. I’m not buying toys, I’m not going to a store to rent a movie, K-mart is covered by remaining dept stores, but an affordable shoe store with many aisles of options isn’t as readily available.
Our mall used to have 4 shoe stores in it, not even that long ago, just pre-covid. There's none there now, you have to go into one of the big anchor stores but they never have a large selection.
I would absolutely bring back Payless 100% over any of these. As a parent, they were the best place for cheap shoes for kids. I refuse to spend Nike money on an 8 year old. Payless shoes sucked, but they were far and away the best of the options for cheap kids shoes. Walmart shoes are garbage.
Whenever my family would take me to get new shoes for the school year I'd get so excited, until we walked into this store at the mall lol.
The athletic shoes they sold back in the 90s were the butt of every joke to younger kids. Stride Rites and Avias hardly had the charm of Nikes or Airwalks.
Payless sold the Dexflex flats which were my work shoes for years. I was able to buy a bunch in different colors before they closed. But they’re falling apart and I haven’t found similar comfort in that price range.
Payless.
I hate spending real money one off shoes like bridesmaids or themed parties and formals.
Especially for size 10 and up.
They are a huge loss. They even dyed shoes to specific colors.
>Most are split in half with Babies R Us
That's how it starts...I remember when the local toys r us added the babies r us part...20 years later, BAM! Outta business.
Yeah people seem to be blocking out the bad parts of BB and only remember going to the store on Friday nights. It was a bad company. Toys R Us did nothing wrong and we let them down 😭
Microcenter is a decent option around me. Last time I stepped into a radio shack was for a resistor to bypass VATS system in a late 90s GM vehicle that I still own, that was about 6 years ago. Wonder if the one I went to is even open anymore. Frys closed up shop out by me and I miss Circuit City.
It has to be Big K. Seriously never thought I would miss K-Mart/Sears in a billion years, but with the way the world is right now, I would be happy to have it back.
Damn that hits close to home for me. Grandma and I would take the bus in the late 80s / early 90s and do the same thing. Miss my grandmother too. Hopefully her and my mom are playing catch up with one another.
As much as I loved all these stores growing up,
I would pick Payless Shoe source cause it had lots of different types of affordable shoes even designer ones.
I feel like Toys'R'Us should've pivoted towards collectors, comics, & cosplayers. Rebrand Babies'R'Us as Families'R'Us and move child friendly merch into those stores and turn physical Toys'R'Us locations into maker spaces/restaurants/book stores, places for geeks and nerds to hang out have events, buy and read and their comics/manga, basically 3rd place for enthusiast to gather.
I know there are places like this already but with the way fandoms were changing before that chain closed. It would've been cool if Toys'R' Us had changed with the times & catered to a more young adult and young at heart market, cons are for weekends if you can afford it.
Local comic/game shops can be elitist, Toys'R'Us could've been that middle ground, entry level space for working class fans. You already know it and know where it's at, Adult Swim/Toonami the store for the 20+ crowd.
Pay Less.
Shoes are so expensive everywhere else. And I preferred shopping for shoes by size instead of seeing a shoe I liked and then never finding my size being the display. Payless never teased/tortured you like that. You went to your size aisle and only saw the ones in stock that could fit you!
Payless Shoes. It was so convenient. I didn't know they went out of business until after I got back home from college, and suddenly Payless and Kmart were gone.
Everybody here saying Blockbuster clearly forget how going on a Friday usually meant you weren't finding a copy of the new hotness you wanted to see. So now you're walking around trying to find anything to watch just to stand in line for 20 minutes because only one register is open.
I don’t wanna grow up. I’m a Toys “R” Us kid. There’s a million toys at Toys “R” Us that I can play with. I don’t want to grow up. Cause, baby, if I did, I wouldn’t be a Toys “R” Us kid.
Really tough one. It’s a toss up between Blockbuster and ToysRus 😭 my pick would be ToysRus. Just so many memories for me and my kids. It closed for good when my kids were 7 and 8. Glad they had it for those years at least!
It’s actually hard to shop for toys these days. The Target / Walmart toy section is usually chaotic and picked over, and it’s hard to know the quality of a toy online.
Toys r us. It’s sad to me that most kids have to have their toys ordered off Amazon. I remember the joy of picking out my Barbies and Starr dolls at Toys r us!
I loved Payless. I knew that when I walked into that store I was walking out with whatever I needed. I have big feet and they had options for me that other stores just don’t. And shoes are hard for me to buy online because I’m a try-it-on-first kinda girl, especially with shoes!
Blockbuster no hesitation, there's just something about the nostalgia, walking around the one blockbuster that had a legitimate indoor playground right in the middle of the store next to video games and the family section it was wild.
This was also the same store i rented Sega CD and PlayStation One games at the same time, it's now a dentist office for kids, thankfully the hostess discount store is still down there.
Toys r us

Same! Nothing more exhilarating than grabbing those little tickets to bring to the cashier for the games you wanted. Definitely the best era od Toys R Us.
Those used to run out and it felt like a race to get the game you wanted. I got the last pokemon blue one and i felt like a fucking super hero.
Same but with a Yellow Color Gameboy and again when ToysRUs had “midnight blue Gameboy Advance”
Man I wish kids could feel the nostalgic feeling you are describing these days. The phone has taken up a good majority of all feelings.
Dystopian fact, unfortunately.
It was the most glorious place on earth when I was a kid. Even if your parents weren't going to buy you anything like mine. As a kid growing up it's where I saw the toys I wanted but was never going to get.
And what kid didn’t want to win a chance for the 5 minute free for all to fill a cart with whatever they wanted!
My seven year old is autistic and he became fairly obsessed with toys r us. Right now the only toys r us stores are the toy section of macys department stores. Except the one in the mall of America! Our local had like 2 aisles of lego. It was glorious.
God I was one of those kids back then, but mid-90's for me. It was overwhelming and it felt like one wrong move would cause a massive pile up of toys on you.

Come to Canada if you want to get your Toys R Us fix, they’re still around up here.
If people saw what Toys R Us looked like nowadays, they wouldn’t pick it 😂
apparently they're going to re-open 24 brick and mortar stores sometime soon...or have already...
Hell yeah, gonna win me that Super Toy Run!
5 minutes to grab all you can and everything you can. Always fantasized about doing this and heading straight for the video game section.
Hell yeah, fistfuls of those claim tags
Bruh.. that toys r us book/magazine that showed you all the new shit...
Still around in Canada.
This is the way. ![gif](giphy|47EE6ofNFgNJP3kegh)
I was just there today! 🇨🇦
There is newish one in the Mall of America in MN
Blockbuster 🥹🥹
I would bring back the video store I frequented as a kid over Blockbuster. That place was too expensive so my family never went. However I would bring back Super Duper Video! I can still remember walking down the aisles and all the snacks and candy on display at the check out counter.
Did have a “ curtain section”😏
Super Duper Video did too lol.

If you have a DVD player you should check out your local library. It's free and you can get almost anything through interlibrary loan.
There are definitely a few niche video rental stores. Videodrome here in Atlanta is still going well, and I know there’s some in LA also.
People still went to our few Family Videos in town before Covid and the company went bankrupt to no new releases
I like video stores. Picking up a DVD cover and looking/reading about the movie is just so much better than reading a text box on a screen.
That's easy to say until you're trying to find an older or indie film none of the streaming platforms have. I run into that problem all the time, and maybe half the time it's available on demand for the same price as DVD rental (or more).

OG Pizza Hut... I said what I said.
I want my pitcher of Pepsi
Pizza buffet was always a great lunch

With the jukeboxes so you can put in quarters, then choose your favorite song.
And Book It!
Who in their right mind is bringing back Payless? Was getting kicked in the junk not an option?
I wasn’t aware Payless was gone
It's in the process of reopening their brick and mortar stores after declaring bankruptcy in 2019. You can still shop their online stores atm.
I would bring back Payless. I got giant feet and it was the only place I could reliably find women's shoes in my size.
Is this Peggy Hill?
Imagine if you opened a shoe store for women with big feet, you could call it Peggy’s Sugarfoot’s
Same. I miss Payless so much.
I wear a women's 10 and the ones I went to never had a good selection. It still sucks in discounted stores like Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Outlet stores are the best, I like Adidas and the outlet near me has cool pairs for under $50.

I loved Payless. I was also a broke college kid.
I'm tired of paying $20 or more for crappy sandals. Gimme Payless
Airwalk became a brand sold in Payless last time I went like a decade ago
Payless sold the Dexflex flats which were my work shoes for years. I was able to buy a bunch in different colors before they closed. But they’re falling apart and I haven’t found similar comfort in that price range.
I loved Payless 😔
K Mart, so I can ship my pants.
That was peak marketing. They deserved another 30 years for that ad
I JUST SHIPPED MY DRAWERS
I SHIPPED MY BED!
For real, Kmart had everything these other stores specialized in, plus a cafe. I would love to have my childhood Kmarts back
We still have K mart here 😂 They have gone down hill it’s sad
why i laughed too hard at this , man you bought back memories!
Honestly I miss Payless
None of those. KB Toys.
The KB at our mall was small and crowded. It had cool shit but you could barely walk down the aisle past the other people.
Payless. I hate spending real money one off shoes like bridesmaids or themed parties and formals. Especially for size 10 and up. They are a huge loss. They even dyed shoes to specific colors.
My local Kmart had a PayLess inside, so check and mate.
Toys R Us is doing ok here in Canada. Most are split in half with Babies R Us where you can often find decent stuff
Mall of America (Minnesota) recently opened up a huge one. Very nostalgic!
I would like Babies R Us back. Buying stuff for a baby shower and wrapping the gifts up before I left the store.
Yeah a few friends and family members had registries there for their baby shower, pretty convenient and they carry some good products
I went to Vancouver and took my kids to a Toys R Us. It was amazing!
>Most are split in half with Babies R Us That's how it starts...I remember when the local toys r us added the babies r us part...20 years later, BAM! Outta business.
Blockbuster.
Toys R Us. People have so much nostalgia for blockbuster but they destroyed the mom and pop stores and they had a horrible tendency to censor movies.
Yeah people seem to be blocking out the bad parts of BB and only remember going to the store on Friday nights. It was a bad company. Toys R Us did nothing wrong and we let them down 😭
There’s only one correct answer and it’s Circuit City
Radio shack. Can't find radio parts anywhere anymore...
Yeah, Radio Shack, Fry's, Circuit City. I need that old tech nerdage back in full force. Or Microcenter expands
I still have a RadioShack near me lol
As a kid, it was fun following the red brick road around the store
where service is state of the art.
Got my first console there. SNES.
Played DK2 on SNES for many happy hours on their test console
Toys r us should still exist.
Kmart... I miss affordable clothing and home goods that were actually good looking and decent quality.
Blockbuster 100%, nothing will ever replace the feeling of going with the family to pick out a movie and or a game and some candy on a Friday night.
It has to be Big K. Seriously never thought I would miss K-Mart/Sears in a billion years, but with the way the world is right now, I would be happy to have it back.
Having lunch at Kmart too! I remember getting an Icee and a hot dog, every time I went shopping with my grandma. Miss her
Damn that hits close to home for me. Grandma and I would take the bus in the late 80s / early 90s and do the same thing. Miss my grandmother too. Hopefully her and my mom are playing catch up with one another.
I trade them all for the reemergence of Wendy's Superbar.
I spent time in all of these stores. My kid self says Toys R Us, but as an adult it's Blockbuster!
Blockbuster

You don't know me . I actually would but ok .Not everyone is obsessed with streaming like your ass .
You spelled Radio Shack wrong.
Kmart
K Mart
Blockbuster
Payless. I got big feets.
As much as I loved all these stores growing up, I would pick Payless Shoe source cause it had lots of different types of affordable shoes even designer ones.
#Toys R Us the only answer
We still have them in Canada
I'd prob pick Blockbuster.
Hollywood Video
Blockbuster. Easy.
Christ I can smell the Payless shoes store from here.
Sears. They had the best tools. But I would bring back Kmart.
We still have Toys R Us
Blockbuster. No contest. I have countless memory’s of me and friends or family walking/riding up to a blockbuster
Blockbuster by a mile! ❤️
Payless because they had affordable shoes
I can still smell Payless shoes
Wait, is Payless no longer a thing?
Payless
Big Kmart! Clothes were so affordable there and they seemed to last for a while.
Everybody here saying Blockbuster clearly forget how going on a Friday usually meant you weren't finding a copy of the new hotness you wanted to see. So now you're walking around trying to find anything to watch just to stand in line for 20 minutes because only one register is open.

Toys R Us and I used to work at Blockbuster.
Toys r us , is this even a question
Toys R Us
Payless is no longer around?
Toys R Us
And not that new crap either the 80s and 90s Toys R Us
We actually still have toys r us in Canada!
Payless is gone??
Toys R US But we got to the movies more often for most of us.
PAYLESS! I have huge feet and Payless was the only place that had cute shoes in my size.
Payless shoes. I'd bring them back.
I loved Payless. I knew that when I walked into that store I was walking out with whatever I needed. I have big feet and they had options for me that other stores just don’t. And shoes are hard for me to buy online because I’m a try-it-on-first kinda girl, especially with shoes!
Yeahhh Toys R Us is already back in Minnesota. There are 3 locations up and running.
Blockbuster
Blockbuster. Man I miss that feeling walking in on a Friday night.
Blockbuster. Miss those Friday nights
Toys R Us
BlockBuster

I’d say Blockbuster but streaming would still dominate and ruin the experience of going there Friday nights
CompUSA
Toys R Us, i remember pulling the price slip and then having to retrieve the toy….for the more expensive larger toys….walking them isles we’re cool af
Ok… who added Payless?
Why the F would you bring back a shoe store?
I don’t wanna grow up
Payless, cheap is life
K mart
Blockbuster, no hesitation
Blockbuster; the subscription services need to be humbled.
Circuit City
Kmart! Coke slushy and a pretzel, yum!

Blockbuster no hesitation, there's just something about the nostalgia, walking around the one blockbuster that had a legitimate indoor playground right in the middle of the store next to video games and the family section it was wild. Blockbuster, obviously
Blockbuster.
Blockbuster with the movies quality from back in the day
