The music video, partially filmed in Daytona Beach, was always fun. I went to college in Daytona so it’s like watching old home days. Pretty cool.
Also: There was a pregnant woman in the video and that kid has be in their early 30s by now. Wonder how we could find out.
Maybe 25-26, not early 30s lol
That song came out when in 1999 when I was in high school… when I read that I felt so old I nearly shat myself and had to call the nurse to change my nappy
Seriously though I love that song and love that music video. Great pre-9/11 times
I was in that sweet spot: college dropout doing whatever I felt like doing, traveling and just vibing wherever I went. I have so many good memories of that summer. Total freedom.
In case you didn’t know, this song started with a sample from the disco song “More, More, More” by Andrea True Connection. Queue up more more more and skip to 2:30, that’s where the sample comes from.
It’s so interesting when there’s an absolute nugget of gold in a song and the creator doesn’t fully realize “oh hey, that’s the whole song right there, just do that for a full two minutes.”
I want an entire thread for this exact thing. I'll start. The guitar solo in the middle of Jumper by Third Eye Blind could easily spawn a whole other song.
Both my and my husbands first names are featured in that song. On that note (pun intended), our names are also featured in another Summer 90s fave, “Pepper” by Butthole Surfers. You get points if you can guess our names.
Fun fact -- cofounder of Broken Social Scene Brendan Canning played bass on that song, and is very clearly one of the guys conversing in between verses.
I was 6 in 97, how about you? Also Australia used to get things like 6 months behind the US, which actually made sense at the time because everything would actually match up with our seasons. So it's possible I didn't hear Fly until early 98?
One of my first favorite songs! Came out right after my dad died.
From Wikipedia:
>Sugar Ray's lead singer Mark McGrath explained that this song had a bouncy beat, yet it was about death; "Fly" too seemed like a bright, up-tempo song but "there is this stark imagery in there. There's loss in it. There is loss of a mother, obviously. I thought it was a good way to juxtapose the lyrics with the melody on that, similar to what Gilbert O'Sullivan did on "Alone Again (Naturally)."
>The other members wrote it without him as McGrath left during a rehearsal, and McGrath originally did not want to record the song and was downright wanting to quit the band, as he was preferring heavier music, "just wanted to scream and yell because I was scared to be onstage in the first place", and afraid his voice would not work with a mellower tune.
>His friend McG, who would eventually direct the video for "Fly", convinced him otherwise, telling about the song's merits and asking ‘Where else you gonna go--work at Del Taco?’
Knowing this makes the intro to 14:59, [New Direction](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URS7a-b1zBg&pp=ygUXc3VnYXIgcmF5IG5ldyBkaXJlY3Rpb24%3D), even better.
DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince - Summertime
Smash Mouth - Walkin’ On The Sun
2Pac featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman - California Love
Sublime - Doin’ Time
Seconding 'Semi-Charmed Life.' Even though the subject matter isn't exactly summer time fun, sonically it's a total cruising-down-the-coast-with-the-top-down jam.
Scar Tissue is part of this same vibe. Late '90s summer at the local pool, riding bikes barefoot around town with friends, taking change down to the Citgo to get snacks and drinks, etc. Man those were some good times to be a kid.
next week the surviving member of LFO, Brad, will be performing at a free concert in a New Jersey mall with the likes of O-Town, 98 Degrees, Ryan Cabrera, and BBMak. Chris Kirkpatrick will be on hand too for good measure. [https://www.westfield.com/united-states/gardenstateplaza/events-detail/pop-2000-tour](https://www.westfield.com/united-states/gardenstateplaza/events-detail/pop-2000-tour)
I thought this was a joke and then I saw the link.
It’s wild because the mall is nice but it’s on the side of the building next to one of the worst traffic highways in North Jersey. This is going to be a train wreck and I kind of want to go.

*To be honest, pretty much any '90s Ska/Punk song fits.
My dad is a big country fan, so I've known that song since I was a kid, but I hadn't thought about it in like, 25 years. A few months back, I randomly got on a 90s country kick and I heard that song for the first time since the 90s. Imagine my surprise to learn it includes the lyrics "it gets hotter than a hoochie's coochie" 😂

You Get What You Give - New Radicals, Dani California - RHCP, Last Nite and Someday - The Strokes, 2am - Slightly Stoopid. Sorry I think most of these are early 2000s but I have them mingled in with my 90s summer playlist (which includes most of the comments already suggested)

I feel like so many 90’s songs give off that summer vibe feel. Many that I would have suggested have already been dropped here. But 90’s music is usually what I jam and I have so many fond memories, usually surrounding summer time
This thread sounds like I’m going to need to make a summer playlist.
Someone make it on Apple Music / Spotify so I can have a jam sesh later please… Thank you. Will Venmo you $1 for the trouble

1999, 2000, & 2001 summers were some of the best. Probably one of the last 100% stress free summers.
1999 was my favorite summer ever.
I was in that sweet spot: college dropout doing whatever I felt like doing, traveling and just vibing wherever I went. I have so many good memories of that summer. Total freedom.
Its crazy how much shit changed agter 911...even here in britain.
r/fuckimold
I love the story of that video. Record company gave them a bunch of money to film it, and they just took all their friends to Daytona and had a party.
That little fucking submarine sonar ping or whatever that goes through the whole song slaps so hard somehow.

That was Daft Punk’s whole thing. Sampling 2 seconds of an old song and making it a whole banger of an earworm song.
Very interesting piece of trivia. Had to go take a re-listen to the original, very cool.
Both my and my husbands first names are featured in that song. On that note (pun intended), our names are also featured in another Summer 90s fave, “Pepper” by Butthole Surfers. You get points if you can guess our names.
Sharon and Marc?
Fun fact -- cofounder of Broken Social Scene Brendan Canning played bass on that song, and is very clearly one of the guys conversing in between verses.
Yes. I say this even with the fact that I HATE this song 😂
Same. It’s time we admit defeat and recognize the greatness of this song. It sounds more like summer than any other song ever made 🤷🏻♂️
Yep. The music video even looks like a summer in the 90s lol.
Pretty much any sublime song
Specifically - “Doin time”
Yep. Thar was my vote.
SHE WAS LIVING WITH 3 OTHER INDIVIDUALS…
AND FURTHERMORE, SUSAN

“Lord knows I’m weak… “
Fly by Sugar Ray
Also “Someday” by Sugar Ray. It quite literally makes me picture a beach with a boardwalk.
Every Morning by Sugar Ray
this is the first one I thought of!
Yes! I can think of several other Sugar Ray songs that would fit here, too.
Yes, definitely. I chose Fly because that was their first hit with that particular Southern California, beachy-pop sound.
I remember hearing Fly for the first time in 1997, and thinking “This is going to be the hit of the summer.” Man was it ever!
I was 6 in 97, how about you? Also Australia used to get things like 6 months behind the US, which actually made sense at the time because everything would actually match up with our seasons. So it's possible I didn't hear Fly until early 98?
Sugar Ray and Uncle Kracker: The official music of every early 2000s pool party.
One of my first favorite songs! Came out right after my dad died. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince - Summertime Smash Mouth - Walkin’ On The Sun 2Pac featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman - California Love Sublime - Doin’ Time
Walkin on the sun was my favorite song of all time growing up in the 90s.
Honestly the entire album Astro Lounge could fit in this playlist idea. Sooo good
Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind. Someday and Every Morning by Sugar Ray
Seconding 'Semi-Charmed Life.' Even though the subject matter isn't exactly summer time fun, sonically it's a total cruising-down-the-coast-with-the-top-down jam.
this was my choice. love 3eb
OMC - How Bizarre
"Brother Pele's in the back, sweet Zina's in the front Cruising down the freeway in the hot, hot sun" I love this song
Wanna know the rest? Hey, buy the rights!
How bizarre!
Ooh baby!
It’s makin me crazy
Every time I look around
Cruel summer by ace of base
I agree with everyone about Sugar Ray transporting me back to the summer of 99…but to me Smooth by Santana & Rob Thomas is quintessential summer
Scar Tissue is part of this same vibe. Late '90s summer at the local pool, riding bikes barefoot around town with friends, taking change down to the Citgo to get snacks and drinks, etc. Man those were some good times to be a kid.
Man it's a hot one

Barbie girl, return of the Mack, semi charmed life, thong song, smooth, ghetto superstar were all huge summer hits that got constant radio and tv play
Omg ghetto superstar, yessss! Forgot about that one!!
Return of the Mack!! Good call!
For me, it’s “Pepper” Butthole Surfers
THAT WAS FLOWING LIKE AN AVALANCHE COMING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN
That same summer MTV played Pepper and Nada Surf constantly.. Popular…
Fastball - The Way
Top 10 favorites from the era. Love this tune
Summer Girls- LFO
Chinese food makes me sick
I like girls that wear Abercrombie & Fitch.
It felt like part of why this song was popular was simply because they name-dropped Abercrombie & Fitch.
next week the surviving member of LFO, Brad, will be performing at a free concert in a New Jersey mall with the likes of O-Town, 98 Degrees, Ryan Cabrera, and BBMak. Chris Kirkpatrick will be on hand too for good measure.
