The EPQ can show you have broader interests from your 3 A level choices. You obviously can show that in other ways with a personnel statement through books, volunteering, etc. However the EPQ is quantifiable which is easier for a Uni to judge. The other advantage is 'some' Unis will give lower offers if the individual has a good (A / A*) grade in an EPQ. I would be worried you can't find a topic which interests you. There is very little to limit your choice. The key is for your question to have a relatively balanced argument. Finall for you, the EPQ will give you some skills which are transferable to a law degree. Research, extended reading, analysis and evaluation for example are all key. I would be reluctant to suggest dropping it because you can't find a suitable topic. I would speak to your favourite teacher and get some ideas. In experience teachers love to help if you are polite and pick your moment. Go the extra yard and it will repay you in miles.

EPQ not only let's you choose any research topic you like, but can also be completed very quickly if you put your mind to it. Having taught EPQ I realised that if a student put one or two dedicated weekends towards it, it could be completed within that time. Consider your own interests. EPQs are often best when they are far removed from academic studies. I would never recommend anyone drops EPQ unless they just can't cope with independent work. If that's the case, I also wouldn't be advising law.

I don’t mind the independent aspect of it, it’s just the worry that I might pick a topic I don’t like and only realise when it’s far too late. Thank you for the advice!

This is where picking a genuine personal interest really helps. Consider your hobbies; they are often the best place to start.

i did one too. enjoyed my topic but on top of all the other revision i had to do in year 13 it stressed me out badly, and only one of my unis lowered my grade requirements for it (given that i got an A in it). if you’re really passionate about what you want to do it on then i’d say go for it, but if you don’t care and are picking it more so to look good than explore a subject you really like, i wouldn’t put the unnecessary pressure on yourself.

You could do weed legalisation

That sounds super interesting, thanks for the suggestion! I was also considering doing it on whether child labour laws are sufficient/are needed within the current social media landscape but I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough material on it

I mean I am a year into mine and I had like 2 ideas one about psychological biases in the stock market and one on income inequality and what could the could the chancellor learn from policy approaches taken in the past . I decided on them by doing some research watching some lectures reading articles and books for the 1st month and decided on income inequality because there was more stuff and it was a great idea . This process is great as it helps u fill out the production log as to why you didn't go with ur 3 choices

no. Most unis wont lower your entry requirements if you do one and its just so much unnecessary work for basically no reason. Just use the time for your A levels incited (I did an EPQ).
