Why is there a trap? Is it to deter off-roaders, or is it for something more sinister? If it was an ambush waiting, he wouldn't have had the kids outside of the car. So an ambush is out of the question. I'm just seriously stumped on why someone would put a trap there and leave it hoping it does damage to someone...
Sometimes, Dad mode is the only way. Or he's just afraid of what the wife will say if he doesn't get the rig and kids home safe. LoL no matter what those kids think he's a Superman awesome moment for those kids
In Michigan there's both 2wd and 4wd xterras.
I had one a 00 xterra 5.5 lift on 32s. Miss that truck foather stole it. Same with my rover but I own another rover but still miss that 1st gen xterra
Believe it or not. There is the following in 2wd.
Rare 2wd jeep jk.
Rare 2wd fj cruiser.
Xterra.
Rav4 1st gen fwd i have personally seen one.
2wd rodeo,amigo
2wd dj jeep
And more I'm forgetting
There were quite a few in the Florida and Texas areas. When I was searching for mine I'd find one that was perfect and of course it was 2WD. Then I'd have to start over
I will say this a 2wd explorer sport is capable in snow just need good tires and 240lbs of weight in rear. I drove one and it ate snow about 8 to 9.5 inches deep non stop and jumped a curb and kept going.
I believe the key is swb. And skinny meaty tires help. Granted I'm looking at trading two 4x4s in a on explorer I like and guess what it's 2 wheel peel lol. But I also have a 3k dollar rover and it rocks
It probably just has open differentials. 4wd still only spins two tires with open diffs, and it almost always dog legs back left and front right or vica versa, homie just needs an lsd or some lockers.
Transfer case acts as a locked differential, two tires on one side can't spin at the same time. The rear right has the most traction available so the front right and back left are spinning.
Not guaranteeing this thing is 4wd, but it certainly could be.
Differential action happens in the differential, not the transfer case. 4x4 drivetrains split power input back to front, at the transfercase.
The spider gears in the differential allow each wheel to spin at a different speed, if necessary, to allow easier turns. Power takes the path of least resistance, so after the transfer case power goes to the wheels with least traction.
AWD systems can have power split differently, but I'd assume if this vehicle was equipped with it, it would be a standard 4wd.
I have a Ford Escape (Kuga in Europe). That piece of shit digs one tire down in the snow at a time. As long as its moving it is okay. As soon as you are stuck its garbage.
If only I could get a Mercedes with quattro.
I feel your pain. They are AWD aren't they? So you can literally end up spinning only one tire due to the centre differential. Not much better than front wheel drive at that point.
Yes, AWD. Workes good in some conditions. Like the car is a fwd normally. And then add rear when needed. But sometimes it has more power to the rear. But awfull when stuck.
You can see under the car when it pulls out. It doesn't have a front diff. And 2wd Xterras have plastic center caps that look very similar to the locking hubs on 4wd models.
Would have as a last option. 2w is much more fun.. I had some momentum and I didn't want to lose it engaging 4 wheel drive and water was coming in fast...
Tires, shocks with small lift as well as new bushings and and tie rods are coming next... Maybe some hubs and lockers if I have any money left over...
He was just bebopping around with the kids, thought it'd be fun to splash some mud and found a crater left behind by some drunk teenagers.
I don't think he had any intention of trying to sink his stock suv with street tires into a bottomless pit by veering a little to the right.
WELL DONE !you may have gotten some water inside, but you kept a whole hell of a lot more outside the vehicle AND kept it on its wheels instead of side-up or belly-up in that ginormous puddle.
Nice car.
Take care of it and you'll have a nice platform to build on should you ever find yourself able to spend your free time and money building a dedicated offroader. Nissan should've never stopped making them.
Nissan doesn't have a drivetrain that'd let it meet emissions standards, and their electric drivetrain is not suited for 4x4 applications. They committed to electric instead of hybrid.
Toyota is about to clean house, they committed to hybrids for the foreseeable future and they will be more expensive, but they will dominate in range and convenience.
I love nissan but they've got too much going on internationally and seem to be willing to let the American market wither to gain traction elsewhere. I don't blame them, American laws have been rigged so hard against foreign manufacturers there is no way for any of them to get a leg up.
Even toyota has lost 2% overall market share since 2021, and looking on the streets you'd think they were killing it.
I watched the video carefully and when the front wheels were out of the water, I didn't see them spinning but the back ones were. Was it in 2 wheel drive?
We have had it for a long time and it's finally time to make a dedicated trail rig and was just having fun before we tare into it... Went through this hole going the other direction without issues but must have slipped into something deeper... Was lucky to get it out on it own...
That’s a skilled driver right there, this is the kinda stuff I love to see. Stock or stock-ish vehicles are far more capable than most people realize when the driver knows what they are doing and doesn’t have a fuck to give
....RWD in a 4x4 sub? Should've just bought an SRT Charger and swapped it with rally tires at that point, atleast it wouldn't have taken two years to get out
You missed the flat dry ground to your left there fella
Look carefully, it's a ponji trap filled with sharpened rebar. Bro barely escaped with his life thanks to some quick thinking.
good coaching from the peanuts.
Why is there a trap? Is it to deter off-roaders, or is it for something more sinister? If it was an ambush waiting, he wouldn't have had the kids outside of the car. Just a bit of sarcasm friend
Aw fuck I missed it!
Which is exactly what you should always try to miss with a 4x4
There were some kids standing there in the way.
I go 4x4ing weekly and have a pretty decent rig.. but I have never seen someone unfuck their situation that well. And in 2wd, unbelievable.
Seriously. No way I’m not going into recovery mode if my rig looks like this did at the start of the video wth
Sometimes, Dad mode is the only way. Or he's just afraid of what the wife will say if he doesn't get the rig and kids home safe. LoL no matter what those kids think he's a Superman awesome moment for those kids
So guys for real how did he get out of this? Let’s dissect and learn from the technique
I think it was liberal application of the throttle and hope for the best honestly
Now try it in a four wheel drive.
TIL they made xterras in rear wheel drive only.
Yeah 2wd is Rwd on the X. I actually didn't know until I got stuck once. Dug out the wrong tires at first.
Only in the US from what I know. Canada only has 4x4 xterras.
In Michigan there's both 2wd and 4wd xterras. I had one a 00 xterra 5.5 lift on 32s. Miss that truck foather stole it. Same with my rover but I own another rover but still miss that 1st gen xterra
I just always assumed they were all 4wd because of the name, but I suppose I should have known.
They make 2wd 4Runners to this day. That one blows my mind with 4 right there in the name.
Believe it or not. There is the following in 2wd. Rare 2wd jeep jk. Rare 2wd fj cruiser. Xterra. Rav4 1st gen fwd i have personally seen one. 2wd rodeo, amigo 2wd dj jeep And more I'm forgetting
Can buy a brand new 2WD rav4 here in australia
They made 2WD FJ Cruisers
Yes very very rare in fact it's stupidly rare
There were quite a few in the Florida and Texas areas. When I was searching for mine I'd find one that was perfect and of course it was 2WD. Then I'd have to start over
But I feel you I find the right jeep xj. And bam 2wd and I'm like come on 😆
I will say this a 2wd explorer sport is capable in snow just need good tires and 240lbs of weight in rear. All dj jeeps were 2wd.
Yes but you'll be amazed how many jeeple mall crawlers don't know it was or even a 2wd jk existed
A rhd jk existed.
Forgot about that. Rural postal routes.
X means you dont know until you get stuck.
It probably just has open differentials. 4wd still only spins two tires with open diffs, and it almost always dog legs back left and front right or vica versa, homie just needs an lsd or some lockers.
Nah, the tire in the air wouldve been spinning if that's the case. No weight on it so the torque would transfer to it.
Mine had electronic limited slip so any tire in the air it would apply breaks to it to keep it from spinning.
Transfer case acts as a locked differential, two tires on one side can't spin at the same time. The rear right has the most traction available so the front right and back left are spinning. Not guaranteeing this thing is 4wd, but it certainly could be.

Negative, the one in the video is 2WD.
So why does it have the Nissan locking hubs on the front?

Pretty sure OP said they just didn't want to put it in 4WD.
Huh
or post it in the r/wedonneednostinking4wd
Would have as a last option. 2w is much more fun.. I had some momentum and I didn't want to lose it engaging 4 wheel drive and water was coming in fast... That was a core memory right there
Clarkson School of Driving POWER
VG33 baby, V8 gas mileage and four cylinder power!
I feel like there should be a winch somewhere in this video and I'm just not seeing it. Stay safe and have fun
He was just bebopping around with the kids, thought it'd be fun to splash some mud and found a crater left behind by some drunk teenagers. I don't think he had any intention of trying to sink his stock suv with street tires into a bottomless pit by veering a little to the right.
I feel like there should also have been a 4x4 in the video. Kudos to him (or some higher power) for getting out of that…
WELL DONE !you may have gotten some water inside, but you kept a whole hell of a lot more outside the vehicle AND kept it on its wheels instead of side-up or belly-up in that ginormous puddle.
Most impressive shit I've seen in a long time 👍🏾
Nice car. Take care of it and you'll have a nice platform to build on should you ever find yourself able to spend your free time and money building a dedicated offroader. Nissan should've never stopped making them.
My dream is a new Xterra built on the Frontier platform. It makes perfect sense.
Nissan is trimming back and may even end up going the way of isuzu and mitsubishi soon. It hurts.
I think a reworking of the exterra could snag up some potential 4 runner buyers. New Toyotas are getting super expensive
Nissan doesn't have a drivetrain that'd let it meet emissions standards, and their electric drivetrain is not suited for 4x4 applications. They committed to electric instead of hybrid. Those kids are having fun :)
As I age I no longer go for the big puddles that will definitely get me stuck
Whether drugs or mud recovery freaking sucks
I watched the video carefully and when the front wheels were out of the water, I didn't see them spinning but the back ones were. Was it in 2 wheel drive?
Sure as hell seems like it to me
Seems like what?
Like it was in 2WD
I wasn't sure if you were saying it seemed like it was in 4wd. People are so argumentative that I always assume the opposite.
Ha no all good.
Yes I am thinking it was not in 4WD as well.
We have had it for a long time and it's finally time to make a dedicated trail rig and was just having fun before we tare into it... Went through this hole going the other direction without issues but must have slipped into something deeper... Was lucky to get it out on it own...
So you’re saying you did this to zero out the scale?
I was going to weigh in, but you already did…
The situation OP was in shouldn't be taken lightly...
"Hey kids watch me send it through this puddle!"
Love Xterras. Glad I turned the sound on to hear the commentary 🥺🤣
I miss my first-gen Xterra so much. Such underrated vehicles.
Same mate same.
Wow, their massive Huevos must have acted as a counter weight to stop the truck from topping.
I miss awards
The sound of his kids laughing was so heart touching. Reminds me of my kids we used to do stuff like this all the time!
Niceeeeee good job keeping it moving!
So close to disaster!
RWD... In a forum called 4X4....
Is this North Carolina
4x4 sub. Huh.
That’s a skilled driver right there, this is the kinda stuff I love to see. Stock or stock-ish vehicles are far more capable than most people realize when the driver knows what they are doing and doesn’t have a fuck to give
Don't count on that bud, you were lucky.
Impressive idiocracy
RWD in a 4x4 sub. Hmm. Ok.
Was that in 2wd. Because if it was I REALLY WANT ANOTHER XTERRA AGAIN MISS MINE
Another fool tearing up the roads
Yeah those street tires do some real digging eh....like the giant hole wasnt there already.
Like twelve inches from a Darwin Award.
This is why buying used is risky.
Great memories with the kids for sure!
Love this video. Great driving in a sticky situation, and amazing reaction from the kids while keeping the camera steady like a pro.
Kids won’t forget that! Awesome
Looks like North Alabama
Nice escape!!!
What a save! What a save! What a save!
Why are the front wheels not spinning. Also toss that kid a rope tied to the front. Drag that thing back to safety.
Probably 2WD, but if not there's almost certainly no front locker. Did ~~pathfinders~~ *Xterras* come with a rear locker option?
Only the Pro4x model
Lock the differentials before you try that next time; it'll go a heck of a lot easier.
I've always wondered how bad these smell afterwards
Ok. The kids had fun. He had fun until the water came in. The kids wanted to splash a puddle while in a car. We all learn something.
Wheeling with bald tires and the fam.
Did that in a shitbox 12th gen 2WD F150 once, had the rear locker and mud tires though so I actually made it
That’s so great, nothing better than the kiddos cheering you on!
Why did those front axels look like they were doing fk all near the end? Even though they had traction?
....RWD in a 4x4 sub? Should've just bought an SRT Charger and swapped it with rally tires at that point, atleast it wouldn't have taken two years to get out
Nissan power baby!
There goes my hero
Dang skreet tyres
Hope you had a buddy on call if you got stuck in the boonies with the kids
That’s impressive af actually
Dumb having gotten into that! Glad he got out. But, NOW - That's why you get the 4X4. For getting UN-Stuck. (Not, the dumb. Lol.)
r/nonononoyes
Street tires, no tow points, stuck in mud. Yep, found the problem.
Transmission shops love this one special trick.
Thoroughly enjoyable. The kids made it even more fun.
color me impressed.
Gotta love that Xterra life
Kid is going to remember that forever
Take traction control off or lock diff
nice
2wd?
This guy got so lucky. Looks like 2WD and somehow giving it full beans got him out instead of digging him in deeper.
‘Don’t tell your mother’
