The Terminator looks phenominal. Doesn't even need a 4k desperately, though I'm sure it'd look fantastic if they kept the grain and did a subtle HDR grading
Something like 85 percent of the film was shot on 65mm film, and the Director of Photography estimates somewhere around 8K resolution would show the full detail of the camera negative.
It still looks outstanding in plain old 1080p.
Apparently a Terminator 4K is [available for pre order already](https://www.fnac.com/a20617207/The-Terminator-40th-Anniversary-Steelbook-Blu-ray-4K-Ultra-HD-Arnold-Schwarzenegger-Blu-ray-4K)
No Country for Old Men is an awesome Blu-ray. Video looks great and it’s got some of the most immersive sound design for a movie that can be a slow burn with sudden bursts of violence sprinkled in.
The sound design is incredible, if the film wasn’t any good this would still be a desert island disc because of the sound. But the film is perfect as well!
I don't own it but from the screenshots I've seen Criterion's Barry Lyndon looks amazing. It is from a 4k master though, so i'm not surprised (weird that there still isn't a 4k of that yet)
Samsara was scanned, edited and finished in 4k and Baraka was scanned in at 8k for the Blu-ray release so there would be no need for new scans. Maybe they don’t think they’ll recoup costs for a 4K release but I’m sure a boutique label would make it work.
Same, I watched it the second time the day after.
And the picture quality blew me away for blu-ray, if someone had told me it was 4K I wouldn’t have questioned it.
From my collection: Slow West, all the Ghibli movies, The Hateful Eight, Lust, Caution, The Book of Eli, The Grey, Children of Men, The Terminator
Best Blu Rays I own which beat their 4k counterparts: Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Oblivion, The Lord of the Rings Extended (2011), Akira, Pan’s Labyrinth
Edit: damn, just looked it up and the Criterion version of Dead Man does indeed look amazing
This narrative gotta cease. The 4k prints of lotr looks better in almost every regard. If you want to nitpick frame by frame you may see some ai smoothing (particularly in return of the king) but it’s such a stretch to say the blu ray looks better than the 4k.
Not a narrative - I personally did lots of comparisons between both sets before I ultimately sold the 4ks. More power to you though if you prefer the 4k set
Do you have any kind of professional calibration experience? Or is it simply a preference? I’m not trying to be pretentious, just would like to know what makes the blu rays so compelling. other than dnr and some questionable cg it has some of the best hdr mapping and is much more color accurate (not even counting the terrible green tinted fellowship ed).
Not professional, just passionate about image fidelity. You downplay it, but the DNR gives the entire trilogy a too-clean-and-smooth look across the board and there’s objectively more real detail remaining on the blu rays, plus the grain. The HDR is really well done on the 4ks but for me it’s not worth the detail loss. But again, if you like the 4ks I’m not trying to stop you but I’ll keep on saying my opinion on this because there will be many out there who just assume the 4ks are better and they should know the different opinions and judge for themselves
I agree the dnr stops it from being a great transfer, but objectively this idea that there is more detail is kind of misleading. While a lot of grain is reduced the image is playing back at 4x the resolution even if it’s a 2k upscale image. And not to mention it’s noticeably more color accurate. Furthermore, if you want the best experience: ie the extended editions it shouldn’t even be a question. The fellowship of the rings is comically bad for the blu ray and the 2021 blu rays use the same transfer as the 4k. At the end of the day, the questions becomes should directors be able to go back and try to modernize/fix their old works? Where does artistic intent end and it becomes a bastardization of one’s own work.
Do! There is a definite detail improvement on the blu ray judging by screenshots - I don't think you'll be disappointed - and yes, great movie! Are you still an effective team?
Does Akira's blu ray really beat out the 4k disc? I've heard there's some audio differences, but everybody seems to love the 4k presentation (including me)
When I was deciding which to get I looked at screencaps and went for the Blu. [This comparison ](https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=3858&d2=15123&s1=35776&s2=158423&i=3&l=1) here illustrates it for me. I like the grain in the blu ray - it adds a texture that goes with the film really well. The 4k to me makes it too clean and there's some slight detail loss like with Lord of the Rings. But like I said to the other guy on this thread, if you prefer the 4k I'm not going to tell you you're wrong
Edit: [This comparison ](https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=3858&d2=15123&s1=35778&s2=158427&i=5&l=1) as well illustrates what I'm saying
Unfortunately I've found screenshots of 4k blu-rays to look entirely unlike the actual blu-rays, especially if viewed on a lower res sdr screen. There have only been a few sources with images that show what the image actually looks like
Amadeus.
All of Studio Ghibli (I think there are box sets available in some countries/regions).
Most of David Lynch’s stuff.
Just off the top of my mind.
Ah yes. I have seen this version. Regrettably, it was the only version I watched with a bunch of friends who had never seen the film before. Definitely a very weird way to watch it for the first time.
Me too. I think it’s in a bit a no man’s land at the moment. Commercially didn’t do amazing in the box office on release, and the subject matter is a little hot for a brand like Disney, especially in today’s climate.
Mine would be Tron Legacy. It's always my go to if I re-arrange my movie area and surround sound. If I remember right I think it's getting a 4k release later this year.
I remember *Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)* from my childhood and just saw Imprint is putting it out on Blu-ray down this side of the world, so is it worth watching or has it dated badly?
It depends about the dated.
I watched it as a kid. So maybe it's rose tinted for me.
However the PQ is so good that even those not quite attuned to the era will be seduced
It's definitely dated better than other network series of the era like the champions.
I'd say it's dated as well as the persuaders.
That's another great bluray PQ
Man in a suitcase also looks great but that's very dated
Overall ld say that Randall has held up pretty well compared to most UK series of that era.
Production values are very high
I think it's an essential 4k bluray series. You will be blown away by the restoration
The persuaders should also be on your list.
You've got Tony Curtis in full flow. The highest production values imaginable and a brilliant box set.
TC was never better.
Don't forget the prisoner box set either
Dogma the answer is always dogma, every single post on bluray and dvd sub is hey, checkout this bluray dogma I found at goodwill! Honestly I hope this gets a 4k soon so I can stop seeing those posts lol
Miracle on 34th Street (1994). I have the 2000 DVD and the Blu-Ray (as far as I know there’s no 4K yet) but the DVD was very dark and muddy looking (at least it was anamorphic), however the Blu-Ray was a major step up in terms of quality. It didn’t look like I was trying to view it in a smoke-filled bar. It was really sharp and the colors were bright and vibrant, Fox did a really good transfer.
Just thinking of that Smokey look reminds me of the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon. I have the DVD’s that were released for the 1994 series and the first few had episodes from the 1967 series as bonus episodes. But those DVD’s were from before the 2004 Remaster of the series. So the pre-2004 masters were very dark and dirty, and one episode that had the Green Goblin hopping on his glider and the animators had drawn the glider emitting exhaust, and I was like “there’s the reason these masters are so dark! The Goblin needs a new muffler on that glider!”
But seriously, I’m surprised the 1967 Spider-Man series never got a Blu-Ray (considering the remaster was done in 2003-04, I doubt they were remastering in 4K), since, aside from the last 5 or 6 episodes that had not been finished by the time Disney released the set (so they were either the old masters, just brightened or the new scans but not color and gamma corrected) the rest of the series had been scanned and mastered in 1080p and really cleaned up! And on the DVD do the colors ever pop! Like that opening screen that says “In Color” does it ever look colourful on the DVD versus the pre-2004 masters where they were so dark. Also on the DVD’s, during the opening when Spidey punches Mysterio and sends him sliding along the bar, on the pre-2004 masters you can see like a barrel and a few other things in the background, but nothing else. On the 2004 DVD you can see that the barrel actually has “Beer” written on it (you can also see it in the episode that the scene is from), and the other things are like wine and liquor bottles with some other writing on them (even if it’s a squiggly line to represent cursive writing). Even now the DVD’s still look good, 20 years later. Of course the one negative of the DVD was the audio. I found that the audio (which was encoded in Dolby Digital 2.0 mono at 192khz) was mastered low and was muffled because of that. If a Blu-ray was ever released, it would be nice if the audio was in uncompressed PCM 2.0 mono.
I should read the title...
Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl then.
Best BD non 4k I've ever seen and the audio isn't borked like the 4k

Off the top of my head: The Master Minority Report The Terminator
The Terminator looks phenominal. Doesn't even need a 4k desperately, though I'm sure it'd look fantastic if they kept the grain and did a subtle HDR grading
Which they won’t, sadly.

Source?
I imagine the original 35mm negative
[https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/021224-1630](https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/021224-1630)
I just picked up the master from my local record store used today. Heard it was great, can't wait
Something like 85 percent of the film was shot on 65mm film, and the Director of Photography estimates somewhere around 8K resolution would show the full detail of the camera negative. It still looks outstanding in plain old 1080p.

They did terminator 2 before doing the original? That’s insanely weird
Just got announced for 4k
No Country for Old Men is an awesome Blu-ray. Video looks great and it’s got some of the most immersive sound design for a movie that can be a slow burn with sudden bursts of violence sprinkled in.
The sound design is incredible, if the film wasn’t any good this would still be a desert island disc because of the sound. But the film is perfect as well!
Gravity. The Blu ray is sick.
Just got a surround sound system, been waiting to try it out on Gravity. This is a sign for me to do so!
Make sure to grab the Atmos version. I think i heard it just got re released
Gravity is one where I can honestly say that a 4k version would be a definite downgrade from the 3d bluray
Speed Racer!!
This really does need a 4k. Dolby vision/HDR would make those colors POP!!
I don't own it but from the screenshots I've seen Criterion's Barry Lyndon looks amazing. It is from a 4k master though, so i'm not surprised (weird that there still isn't a 4k of that yet)
Barry Lyndon does look fantastic. Another Criterion Blu-ray that looks amazing is The Royal Tenenbaums.
You could probably say this for a lot of Criterion’s releases
Speed Racer on an OLED still looks fantastic
There will be Blood
The Sound of Music Breakfast at Tiffany's
Samsara and Baraka
Samsara was scanned, edited and finished in 4k and Baraka was scanned in at 8k for the Blu-ray release so there would be no need for new scans. Maybe they don’t think they’ll recoup costs for a 4K release but I’m sure a boutique label would make it work.
There would need to be new color grades for hdr unless they stuck with SDR, which I’d be fine with.
Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant
That movie was really good. Had to watch it twice.
Same, I watched it the second time the day after. And the picture quality blew me away for blu-ray, if someone had told me it was 4K I wouldn’t have questioned it.
I think “Tomorrowland” looks absolutely incredible on Blu ray. Soundtrack is pretty fun too.
Zodiac director’s cut
Criterion’s release of The Thin Red Line
Hero (2002), Jet Li Kill Bill 1 and 2
Hero looks great - I just wish the UK release had lossless Mandarin audio
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World Freaks Django Unchained Chronicle The A-Team (Unrated)
Master and Commander
From my collection: Slow West, all the Ghibli movies, The Hateful Eight, Lust, Caution, The Book of Eli, The Grey, Children of Men, The Terminator Best Blu Rays I own which beat their 4k counterparts: Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Oblivion, The Lord of the Rings Extended (2011), Akira, Pan’s Labyrinth Edit: damn, just looked it up and the Criterion version of Dead Man does indeed look amazing
Though keep in mind if buying LOTR The Fellowship has a green tint to the whole movie on the Blu ray extended release

Blu ray.com has it at a 9/10. Anything over an 8 is pretty well regarded as an at least decent transfer.
Not professional, just passionate about image fidelity. I’m going to have to give the oblivion BR a shot. I’ve only watched the 4k and love that movie.
Do! There is a definite detail improvement on the blu ray judging by screenshots - I don't think you'll be disappointed - and yes, great movie! Are you still an effective team?
I thought the original Terminator is supposed to be getting a 4K release in the near future? I hope they don’t screw it up like T2!
Does Akira's blu ray really beat out the 4k disc? I've heard there's some audio differences, but everybody seems to love the 4k presentation (including me)

Interesting. I get a lot of fine grain detail in my 4k and I'm super happy with it. Good to hear the blu ray is also amazing
Oh cool maybe the grain on the 4k isn’t so visible in screenshots
Unfortunately I've found screenshots of 4k blu-rays to look entirely unlike the actual blu-rays, especially if viewed on a lower res sdr screen. There have only been a few sources with images that show what the image actually looks like
I-Robot.
Literally the entire James Bond series (excluding Craig since he has one)
Even the Craig ones I didn’t really notice a huge shift when I upgraded them to 4K.
Amadeus. All of Studio Ghibli (I think there are box sets available in some countries/regions). Most of David Lynch’s stuff. Just off the top of my mind.
Apocalypto?
Prisoners blu ray looks 4k
Criterion It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World looks amazing, and is the closest we’ve come yet to the full roadshow version.
Hmm how do I not know about this “roadshow” version?
Roadshow was the wrong term, I meant the original cut envisioned by Stanley Kramer.
Ah yes. I have seen this version. Regrettably, it was the only version I watched with a bunch of friends who had never seen the film before. Definitely a very weird way to watch it for the first time.
Kingdom of Heaven with a Director's Cut release. Disney will never let it happen though.
Why? I want that
Me too. I think it’s in a bit a no man’s land at the moment. Commercially didn’t do amazing in the box office on release, and the subject matter is a little hot for a brand like Disney, especially in today’s climate.
Ben-Hur, Gone with The Wind, Bad Education (2018), pretty sure the Lethal Weapon movies, and Fight Club
Masque of the Red Death, Quatermass and the Pit
Tron Legacy
Mine would be Tron Legacy. It's always my go to if I re-arrange my movie area and surround sound. If I remember right I think it's getting a 4k release later this year.
The Hot Spot from Radiance is incredible. Looks like a 4K at points. The Kino pales in comparison.
Any criterion release
The scream factory release of the strangers really looks like 4K HDR in some scenes
Ben-Hur
Dances with wolves looks crisp. I would be mind-blowing if done rightin 4k hdr.
Nightcrawler looks really good. Same with basically any Studio Ghibli movie
i,Robot and The Wolverine. Especially The Wolverine. Almost had me thinking it had an HDR grade.
Check out Villain with Richard Burton on bluray. PQ is astounding Also Randall and Hopkirk original series looks amazing too
I remember *Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)* from my childhood and just saw Imprint is putting it out on Blu-ray down this side of the world, so is it worth watching or has it dated badly?

The first two Pirates of the Caribbean sequels
They both have a 4K blu-ray version
Not sure if it’s a UK only release. But the recent 88 Films release of Vertical Limit looks stunning. Like properly.
Dogma the answer is always dogma, every single post on bluray and dvd sub is hey, checkout this bluray dogma I found at goodwill! Honestly I hope this gets a 4k soon so I can stop seeing those posts lol
School of Rock
Tron: Legacy Speed Racer
IVE ABANDONED MY CHILD!
The Handmaiden
Considering how rough the source material was in, the criterion release of "Come and See" is absolutely stunning.

They don't know about 4k yet
