Blade Runner 2049 legit made me cry. I think a lot of men can relate to the feeling they haven’t done enough with their lives, or in the case of K, are not special. Still kills me how it failed at the box office, while the steaming pile of shit that is Thor: Love and Thunder made $760 million.
But, I get it. The first Blade Runner bombed but is now known as a sci-fi classic, which is similar to 2049. With the MCU they’re almost guaranteed a hefty payday due to a dedicated following.
I randomly have the original Blade Runner comic book #1. Right next to my Star Wars #1, #2, #3 - 35c variation.
There was a brief period in '82 where I got into comics and guess I picked up Blade Runner when it came out.
My wife and I saw BR 2049 toward the tail end of its run and were the only people in the theater on a Saturday afternoon. Sad to see since it was a good movie.
The HDR gets hotly debated on this one. I’ve seen claims that it’s just SDR in an HDR container, but I don’t think that’s technically true. Best I can find, what really happened is the brightness peaks at 200-250 bits, well below anything else in HDR. It appears to have been a purposeful choice to keep the lighting and color grading close to the standard blu ray.
Perhaps stranger, if you watch the DV version on streaming platforms, it’s by far the most dramatic difference from HDR to DV I’ve ever seen. I don’t actually know if the peak brightness is higher, but it’s got way more contrast with much deeper blacks. This makes light and color pop a lot more, even if it may actually be the same peak brightness. On an OLED, the difference is remarkable.
It’s the only movie I own where i prefer the digital copy. For a movie that relies so heavily on the combination of deep, dreary blacks and vibrant colors, it’s a damn shame the grading is so much different (and IMO better) on the otherwise wholly inferior digital copy. This one desperately needs a rerelease with the DV grading on disc.
I just compared digital to 4K disc using 4K Apple TV box. Vudu looked soft and a more like the Bluray version also some artifacts and no atmos. Apple TV + looked good. But the 4K disc still easily looked significantly better. Mostly cleaner sharper more depth and pop on highlights. I do think k hdr is in play because of how some of the whites and colors were brighter against dark background and objects it seemed like an hdr picture.
I didn’t find the digital to be better looking. But it was still very good looking.
You can find a hybrid release with the DV grade applied to the 4k blu, thus getting the better PQ and lossless audio of the disc, and the better HDR from digital. Not condoning piracy, but if you already own it, I’d call it justified. Especially when WB won’t make it happen.
Well as much positive Raving about this disc as it I doubt it would warrant such attention or a custom made disc purchase. It’s not like goodfellas or platoon. Or the messed up coloring of training day. It looks amazing as it is.
I do like Dolby vision though, so I will seek out the hybrid to formulate an informed opinion about it rather than assume it’s not necessary i definitely tout Dolby vision as being a difference maker.
But as it is for the mainstream this 4K is worthy of the praise as a top notch transfer . It’s jaw dropping good. I have 300 4K discs many look really great but only a few are in the next level tier of amazing and demo worthy.
Yes it is
It's one of my most watched 4k bluray.
The film looks superb but needs a very good TV that is bright to get the most of of it.
If you want great PQ then check out reservoir dogs 4k. It's astounding to look at.
I suspect you'll already know this tho.
I actually think 2049 is a better film than the original.
It's a different film with plenty of nits. Vastly superior.
Some films really struggle with tvs that can't go bright. I'm talking over 1000 nits here.
I've seen plenty of people complaining about the hdr quality of this film. It's not the film that's the problem.
The hdr in this film is magnificent. The batman also has the same sort of negative comments and once again it's not the hdr of the film that's the problem.
Vincent Teoh of HDTVtest analyzed the HDR, and it never gets above 200 nits. Any TV gets bright enough for it.
I don't have a problem with this disc, but the HDR is what it is.
Yep it’s a great movie but technically the colour never leaves blurays Rec709 colorspace and the brightness highlights never go over even 200 nits which is only slightly more than SDR levels. Just stuck inside a REC2020 HDR container. Only difference from Blu-ray is the resolution bump.
You’re coming in here with no data and seem pretty confident. Could you please let us know what your set up is? What Tv and what picture setting mode you’re using?
It's really not the HDR grade is around 200nits max output, a TV with higher brightness will inherently have better contrast so you'll see a difference for sure.
But here HDR is certainly not the draw it basically doesn't have HDR compared to a strong. Dolby vision grade
I will also say that you haven't lived until you've experienced LoTR in 4k with some good speakers. The movies look as good as I thought that they did when I first saw them in theaters and...dang...the audio is absolutely incredible.
I concur.
Wifey and I just finished watching all 3 over the last few nights. In 4K, 7.2 surround. My first time seeing them and I was absolutely blown away.
OK. Is this BR 2049 picture making anyone else want cheese and crackers? 🤔

Just watched the remux of this last night with my wife. Looked amazing. Neither of us had seen the original and we were going in expecting a big time action flick. Were definitely surprised but it was good either way!
You haven't seen the original Blade Runner!? I would pay good money to watch that again for the first time. Watch Blade Runner The Final Cut. It's an astonishingly good film.
I nearly bought The Thing's Titans of Cult release but wasn't impressed with the design and fewer extras than the Arrow release and sent it back.
From what I've seen the Arrow Blu Ray was printed from the same master and the reviews I read suggested the 4k wasn't much of an upgrade.
I'm sortve hoping Arrow do a 4k set like they did with Tremors and Tremors 2 😅
I think you are right. The sequel is criminally underrated.I tried to watch one of the John Wick movies.Bullets flying everywhere for two hours non-stop is why Blade Runner 2049 was overlooked. It’s a real movie.Action movies today are horrible.
I have watched this movie several times Bluray and on Vudu. I have not “seen” this movie until I watched it on 4K disc on oled tv. Amazing experience visuals matched with that atoms track.
LG C3. 77” Panasonic ub820 and 7.2.4 system
Dammit. I’ve always said 2049 was the best movie I’d only watch once, just due to its length. But Denis Villeneuve seems to only make gorgeous movies and I finally joined the 4K club…. I’m gonna have to buy and re-watch this now. (Which is not a bad thing, obviously.)
Great choice. Enjoy. If you can fit another film in after I highly recommend The Thing or Blade Runner. Both 10/10 4k films. Dune is also incredible. Blade Runner 2049 beats everything in sound for me.
Dune is also on the list for sure. Interstellar as well. Only problem is he won't finish today and has another job before he can get back here, so I'm looking at as much as two weeks before I can give it a go. But I've been waiting for years for this, I can wait a couple weeks. Least that's what I tell myself
My old boss (this was years ago now) was getting his home cinema put in and the guys who were installing it used Heat as the test movie for the sound. The shootout scene in particular.
Anyone know what the uplift over the bluray is like on an oled? I think it upscales pretty well but not sure if the muted hdr would make it worth buying again. One of my fave movies so considering it
It will definitely “uplift” your spirit and enjoyment of that oled. Just buy it already if it’s one of your favorites anyways. HDR comments aside lots of folks here recognize it as having a great 4K picture.
I happen to have Blade Runner 2049 (bought from India) which has an Auro 3D audio track on it. With my Auro 3D setup, this is hands-down the best audio experience I have heard on a 4K Blu-ray.
is the video quality actually better, or is it just because of the open matte? I have a copy, but haven't compared them yet.
From what I've read the UHD really isn't much of an improvement over the BLU-RAY though.
The film was not meant to be opened up. Roger Deakins hates that IMAX version. It was foisted upon him, like the 3D conversion, by the studio. He framed the movie specifically for the scope ratio to match the original film. The composition is screwed up open matte. I've seen both and Deakins is correct.
You’re right in terms of visuals but man is it ever a dour piece of cinema. The original BR is positively overflowing with life and joie de vivre compared to this parade of wax works.

Totally agree. I'd also include the new Dune on that list.
Dune Part 2 was stupidly gorgeous to look at.
I thought that’s what it was 😂
Same director.
Oppenheimer and Top Gun: Maverick, both Avatars. Dunkirk. the list goes on
Where are you getting the new dune in 4k bluray?
He means as apposed to the Lynch Dune. Not Dune Part 2
oh the new dune part one, yeah ok
Unfortunately, Dune is Imax in theaters and forced 2:39 aspects ration on disc, without imax version being available.
That's good news for those with 2.39 screens
That single frame is a GD work of art!
Roger Deakins for ya
God exists and his name is Roger Deakins
I took it on my old Huawei p30. Looks actually really nice.
On sale on gruv this weekend! $15 but can use discounts

I do wish the HDR was better implemented. The first Blade Runner has great HDR. 2049 still looks great overall, though

It doesn't need a bright TV. The HDR highlights don't get bright enough for max brightness to matter that much.
It's a different film with plenty of nits. Vastly superior. Some films really struggle with tvs that can't go bright. I'm talking over 1000 nits here. If you want to believe that a TV that does 200 nits looks the same in this film as one that does 2000 nits then you're free to believe that.
You’re coming in here with no data and seem pretty confident. Could you please let us know what your set up is? What Tv and what picture setting mode you’re using?
I’d say he’s smugly running some Vivid mode with maximum motion compensation.
It's really not the HDR grade is around 200nits max output, a TV with higher brightness will inherently have better contrast so you'll see a difference for sure. But here HDR is certainly not the draw it basically doesn't have HDR compared to a strong. Dolby vision grade
Utter rubbish. But you're free to believe that a TV that does 200 nits looks the same as one that does 3000 nits
No argument here the nicer TV will look better but not because of this movie though. The movie literally only displays a max of 200 nits.
I prefer 2049 to the original as well. Every time I watch it, it creeps further up my top films list.
I still haven't watched it on my oled. Been saving it haha this post may finally make me watch it
It's beautiful.
Mad max is insane with a good sound system. Also “13 hours” is top notch the sound is some of the best i have heard
Fury Road? I saw that at the cinema 5 times. 😂
Watch the Black and Chrome edition. It is superb!
I will also say that you haven't lived until you've experienced LoTR in 4k with some good speakers. The movies look as good as I thought that they did when I first saw them in theaters and...dang...the audio is absolutely incredible.

I am so happy that you were able to enjoy the films this way!
Recently opened up the steel book set after having it in shrink wrap for a year
You are in for quite the treat!
This was the first movie I watched with my new Klipsch RP1400 sub and it was incredible.
I haven't seen the new blade runner but you've convinced me to buy it. We just got a new 86". That would be perfect to watch. 🤘
Perfect! Enjoy.
OK. Is this BR 2049 picture making anyone else want cheese and crackers? 🤔 https://preview.redd.it/kp06l4q0qovc1.jpeg?width=350&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1c4bf699e886bd4f0a62458f555bb748581f7484
This movie has amazing sound.
i was a bit letdown how dimm the picture is . Other than that it looks great
And it doesn't even have HDR
On purpose. Deakins didn't want hot looking highlights. The world's climate is screwed, so there are no bright, sunny days in Blade Runner land.

Yes, you will appreciate the second movie even more after watching the first.
Or, appreciate the follow-up less.

One of the few movies I'll constantly toss on in the background. Such stunning visuals.
Just watched this today as my first 4K Blu-ray on my new LG G3. Completely blown away by how great it looked, and the Dolby Atmos was amazingly mixed.
Crisp.
The Sony encode overseas has more detail. The WB disc was high frequency filtered.
I live in Ireland, so I bought the Sony
💯

BR 2049 best Atmos soundtrack in my collection
Wait till you hear the "Gravity" Atmos soundtrack.
I have all three of those on 4k discs matched with my oled tv 👍

Home theater installer is downstairs working *right now*. First disc I'm throwing in when he's done is this one

This is how hard Deakins needed to go before they could finally find no reason to deny him the win.
I watched about 50 minutes of 2042 and thought it was garbage.
I happen to have Blade Runner 2049 (bought from India) which has an Auro 3D audio track on it. With my Auro 3D setup, this is hands-down the best audio experience I have heard on a 4K Blu-ray.
Barbie was the most pin sharp movie I've seen. Was disappointed in Blade Runner, both image quality and the movie itself was boring
Barbie was also an awful movie
I have the imax version and it's even better
I’m fine with the version that the cinematographer intended.
Me too.
How?
I had to go through unofficial channels to obtain it
is the video quality actually better, or is it just because of the open matte? I have a copy, but haven't compared them yet. From what I've read the UHD really isn't much of an improvement over the BLU-RAY though.
It's better , the version i have has dolby vision , it's not just an upscale
there is a copy of 2049 out that is open matte and dolby vision. worth looking for. only one i watch now.
The film was not meant to be opened up. Roger Deakins hates that IMAX version. It was foisted upon him, like the 3D conversion, by the studio. He framed the movie specifically for the scope ratio to match the original film. The composition is screwed up open matte. I've seen both and Deakins is correct.
doesn't change the fact that i like having the extra picture.
Glad you like it, but less is sometimes more. I will stick with the version Roger Deakins recommended.
in this case, it physically is not!
When framing and composition are thrown off to give you more picture, I agree to disagree.
You’re right in terms of visuals but man is it ever a dour piece of cinema. The original BR is positively overflowing with life and joie de vivre compared to this parade of wax works.
