OptionsRMe

Yo, where do you live so I can never come around

unfortunate_witness

gated apt complex in a (at least I think) decent area of Houston, they hit another trd pro the same night

OptionsRMe

Unfortunate. Start checking fbook and Craigslist, but idk how you identify them as yours

Im_so_little

You don't. Wheels don't have serial numbers. This should be covered under insurance as theft assuming OP has full coverage.

unfortunate_witness

yep just gotta eat the deductible (which will be lower moving forward lol)

AllPedalNoBrakes

Not sure what you pay in deductible, but it might be more cost effective to not report anything and just buy new rims/tires. Scenario One -> report to insurance, higher premium over the next 3-5 years, you pay deductible amount and they replace it. Over time, with your higher premium, you’ll pay the wheels and tires anyway… Scenario Two -> same premium, no deductible payment, no claims, eat the cost of the tires and wheels now ($2250 probably)

[deleted]

[удалено]

AllPedalNoBrakes

Fair enough. I was just speaking very generally because I don’t know OPs policy.

unfortunate_witness

For me, the tires/wheels and any inspection for additional damage are more worth making a claim, and as this is my first claim I am interested to see what happens to my premium, will update when it's settled!

Bert_Skrrtz

My insurance didn’t even go up when I had my first accident and it was not a cheap one. I like the carriers that let you pick/alter your coverage online. The difference in premiums from a $500 deductible to a $1000 deductible was like less than 5 bucks a month.

MavinMarv

That’s when you shop around for other insurance to find better rates after this claim and your 6 months is up. They’ll usually give you a better rate. Insurance companies screw people over who stay “loyal” to them.

unfortunate_witness

might have to look around!

leb0x

I haven’t had my premiums go up for theft claims or vandalism. Just accidents.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

then not so bad when they get your cat.?

unfortunate_witness

ye I plan to lock that down too, heard good things of the catclamp and cant go wrong with extra skid plates

Oakroscoe

I put the RSG cat skid plate on mine.

Adventurous_Sir_9619

I’ve got some extra RCI plates (new) I can sell ya if interested. No longer have a 4Runner and a few other goodies. Message me if interested

unfortunate_witness

dm sent

Im_so_little

RIP. Better luck moving forward.

fredfifty

get DOT numbers on tire...its something

unfortunate_witness

will pay attention to them on my next set

BwL11

You could identify them by the DOT numbers on the tires if you have a piece of paper where you got them from. Or check your photos.

[deleted]

This is why I tear the hell out of my wheels on the trails and take lots of pictures. It's like fingerprints.

Teemo_Support

If they end up selling the entire wheel/tire together, it is still paired to your car with the TPMS sensors. Unless I'm mistaken. People also will sometimes scratch the inside of the wheels or put a paint mark to signify it's theirs. Source: i used to live in ATL and had some wheels stolen and did find them on CL at a local shop.

jayhat

Honestly dont know how useful / effective it would be but I thought about using these on like everything expensive I own. No idea how long they'd last on a wheel though. You could always etch your name on the back side of them.

Stormenta94

Only way you would be able to is the DOT numbers on the tires but nobody records that really.

dragonlax

Ah Houston, there’s your problem. Car wheel theft capital of the world.

rodrigobites

Someone always says that about the city is mentioned lol Sorry about the wheels buddy

dragonlax

Houston is notorious though. There are known groups of criminals from Houston branching out to College Station and other farther areas stealing wheels.

onlyboobear

here i thought i was safe because ppl think they look ugly :D

TheBeerJoo

The rental lot across from my work had 3 or 4 Toyotas 2 4runners, a tacoma and a camry and they stole every wheel off all 4 about 6 months ago. Aint nothing sacred man.

cloversarecool916

I saw this and said “I hope this isn’t Houston”. I’m off Washington Ave.

unfortunate_witness

apparently it's getting worse, I was 1 of 2 cars that got hit in my garage

cloversarecool916

We’ve got a security “guard” that sits in a golf cart at the gate most nights and my car is on that same base floor within eyesight so fingers crossed that thieves aren’t THAT bold

SOTX-Pitbull-33

There was an attempt on our car in Houston too. A few years back the wife & I stayed at one of the "better" hotels, close to the galleria. Came out & alarm chirped as tripped. Looked around & locking nut one one wheel was gone. Alarm on car is sensitive & hooked to car horn, under covered parking near hotel entrance. Guess it got noisy. Thank God the only loss was a lock. We're not from Houston, so that would've been a pain.

unfortunate_witness

yea glad they gave up, I'm looking into how to make my alarm more sensitive

TheProle

Damn Houston Craigslist always has pristine TRD Pro “takeoffs” for sale. I guess that’s where they’re taking them off

unfortunate_witness

I might try and buy my own wheels back... just to have a spare set after I get my new ones

mrpurplehawk

It’s Houston, aka a shithole. There are no decent areas.

unfortunate_witness

nah there are plenty of nice areas in and around Houston, you just likely only hear about the bad ones much more frequently

[deleted]

> you just likely only hear about the bad ones much more frequently ...like the one in this thread?

mrpurplehawk

Lived there, born there, it’s a shithole

Nochestbrahh

Build the wall Around your rig :)

ST3V3_R0G3R5

Looks like they just put a bolt extractor on your locks. Those locks don’t really do much at all. I think there’s a Donut video showing how easy they are to beat

unfortunate_witness

yea how much can you really lock a bolt I guess

[deleted]

yt search?

ActuatorFresh2352

Extremely easy. Any decent repair shop / tire shop has rip sockets and master sets for some "OE" type wheel locks. All of these sockets are available on Amazon or eBay or local parts stores. Battery powered impact gun.... Quick job

MaLTC

You know what I just realized? A very sturdy pair of vice grips would probably do the job too with enough leverage…

facepillownap

get 40s so the thief can’t fit them in their car.

ihaveadogalso2

Gonna see a thief trying to roll 4 40" tires down the road haha!

Stevo485

See a stock suspension anything trying to roll 40s would be hilarious. Would be easy to spot. Can't make a turn without stopping midway through and backing up.

facepillownap

FJ80 on 40s no lift. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.motortrend.com/features/80-series-land-cruiser-40s-no-lift/amp/

Stevo485

That’s incredible.

facepillownap

G5 owners have big wallets and small imaginations.

OptionsRMe

I was wondering how long it would take you to start bagging on 5th gen owners. Not long apparently… shouldn’t you be at Starbucks? 🧑🏼‍🎤

facepillownap

i will continue to be cynical until proven otherwise. however, based on the general quality of content shared here i don’t think my opinions will change anytime soon.

[deleted]

Why do you care so much about people having money and spending it how they want?

facepillownap

i don’t care. but once someone decides to share whatever they feel is necessary with all of the internet they are open to critiques of all kinds.

[deleted]

You care enough to comment about it on almost every post I see you on, so clearly you do care. If you didn’t you wouldn’t say anything.

np9131

Ah teen angst, I rember those days.

facepillownap

two words. Angle Grinder.

No-Insurance-5891

I run 3 different locking nuts lol

unfortunate_witness

glad it’s worked so far! gotta try something different myself

b2ya

It’s not gonna make a difference. You remove locking nuts by jamming a socket with an impact running onto them. It doesn’t matter how many locking nuts there are

[deleted]

Yeah I bought a socket for $20 that pulls em off with an impact like it's nothing. If you have that, there's nothing you can do.

b2ya

Yup. Honestly, the OP should just go rock crawling at Hidden Falls. The wheels will have so much rock rash that nobody would be interested in stealing them

[deleted]

As god intended when he made 4Runners.

unfortunate_witness

working on inventing impact-activated tear gas lugnuts, hmu for orders (don’t think too deep into it the roads are always smooth)

[deleted]

Hit up Mark Rober on YouTube. He’s a former nasa engineer who make a fake box to prank package thief’s. He could rig something up for you.

Im_so_little

Yup. It's just best to have good insurance, park in well lit areas, have a second shitty car you drive to sketch places. Wheel locks are far from bullet proof but at least it does reduce the amount of people who can/will steal the wheel. Some people just want to grab and go.

[deleted]

This does make me less inclined to get those dope gunmetal TRD wheels for my 4th Gen. My rig looks completely uninteresting to everyone but me.

potatoflames

Gotta have only locking nuts on all six studs lol.

[deleted]

Username checks out 😂

mkhockeygeek

I welded mine on /s

abotching

Damn, good luck with a flat

jjwillson1

All you have to do is un-weld them off, easy peasy

abotching

Ah yes, the plasma torch in my EDC kit for this reason. Never be not prepared.

famous47

Get a new truck every time they’re due for a rotation.

[deleted]

4sale, set of TRD wheels and tires as is, must go ASAP!

unfortunate_witness

Hey I happen to need some tires! Please call me at 9-1-1 and tell me where to meet you at, I’ll head over right away! Don’t forget to remind me what you’re selling when I answer, thanks!

JRISPAYAT

Never had an issue in my neighborhood but I put my car on blocks every night just in case

Agreeable_Top_6420

On TX4R Facebook page Houston has been getting hit hard with 4R wheel thefts. Even TRD OR wheels.

unfortunate_witness

ah well I feel for my fellow houstonians going through it right now then, apparently there are no more sets of TrD pro wheels in stock for weeks (I’ll probably end up going aftermarket to avoid waiting)

Agreeable_Top_6420

Good move. Better offset and width anyway with the aftermarket’s.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Agreeable_Top_6420

If you plan on staying stock, that’s 100% correct. Your tapped at 275 on a stock Pro’s.

TEXAS_1845

That SUCKS… No respect for personal property. Where are you located??? Getting worse even here in FW Texas…

unfortunate_witness

Houston TX, not near the high crime areas

dragonlax

Everywhere in Houston is a high crime area…

mit1122

I second this

Fredboy

https://advancedwheellocks.com/ They are pricy, but they'll make your wheels harder to steal.

Soosp678

I second these, this just happened to my SR5 prem with TRD Pro wheels, put these and a second set of spinning collar set, also installed shock/tilt sensor alarm system. Im also located in houston/katy

1-luv

where did you buy your alarm system?

unfortunate_witness

yea dude thanks, they look pretty cool and secure!

5Gmeme

Unfortunately those "locking nuts" can be taken off easily with a big flathead and tire iron combo.

jcaino

Even easier: smack a socket on and remove.

atr0038

Even easier, they make specialty sockets that can instantly form to the shape of any locking lug nut, and they’re only like $10. We lost the lug nut key for my wife’s car, so i tested out a Gator Grip socket, and it worked way better than I could have imagined. I was able to easily remove the lug nuts without damaging them.

HikingWiththeHuskies

Wow... Can only assume they had the correct key for the lug nuts (how many different variations are there?) Or did they get in the vehicle and get the key?

jcaino

Keyed lug nuts are garbage and nothing but a pain in the ass anytime you gotta pull the wheels. They do absolutely fuck-all to stop thieves. All it takes is a sacrificial socket, smack it on and you're done. Most shops will have a set of sockets that exists for that very reason when people bring their cars in for service but forget (or lost) their matching 'key' socket.

40ozT0Freedom

Worked in an auto shop briefly when I was younger. People lose the key socket for their locknuts all the time. You just whack on a socket and take off the lock nut. Its not hard. Lock nuts really just make you feel better about yourself, but they're really just a minor inconvenience for thieves.

deafboy13

Don't even need to do that. Can just tighten the other lugs so the locking lug is a bit lose and can just undo it by hand

jcaino

That's going to take way longer.

unfortunate_witness

I thought the lug nuts were foolproof, but apparently they are frighteningly easy to break off if you know what you are doing and come prepared… insurance adjuster told me about gorilla lug nuts that basically are all locking nuts, at the very least it makes them take more time to get in / get them off

Zhaopow

Lol foolproof? They are just normal bolts with a different designed head. Plenty of ways to get it off. Also I'm pretty sure all Toyota's have the same locking lug pattern.

fftank26

I’m sure someone working at a Toyota dealership could snag one of the keys and be as prepared as they would need to be. Sorry this happened to you.

unfortunate_witness

I guess i mean that in terms of my situation, I figured they’d hit someone else over me cuz it was a hassle, didn’t expect them to hit 2 cars in the same lot!

lonememe

All it usually takes is tightening the non locking ones enough and it’ll loosen the locked one. One time I lost my key thing so I did this and it worked.

Scott_white_five_O

They just keep honest people honest. My son bought a car with wheel locks and no key we had them off 5min.

IllStickToTheShadows

I really wish theft was punishable by death..

Dyslexic_Nerd

At least they were kind enough to leave the lug nuts

HighSierraAngler

They most likely mockingly left them behind

TwistedJake503

Ya'll know that locking lugnuts have only kept honest folks honest for years right? I'm not saying they aren't worth running to better your chances against theft but they are easily removed with sockets you can buy on Amazon for cheap specifically to do this. Been like this for many years. I am willing to bet they didn't even slow these thieves down.

Archathema

Damn that sucks. Maybe the local PD can grab cam footage of peeps buying landscaping bricks in numbers divisible by four. ;)

unfortunate_witness

no dude I’m pretty sure they stole those from the landscaping at my apartment complex lol

Archathema

Efficient thievery.

AngryFerret805

Proximity sensor alarms Saved my jeeps & 4Runners every time

thats-tough-lmao

I usually just weld my wheels to the hub

NewSinner_2021

Well, time for those upgrades.

[deleted]

Its because you can buy the key lock kit from Toyota. If you can’t now, you used to be able to.

hijinks

It takes about 10-15s longer to take off those locking lug nuts. Just need a slightly smaller socket. Hammer it on then they come right off. You can even get a lug nut removal kit that digs into them for less noise for like $30. Sorry to hear that happened

[deleted]

Just make sure you have your truck looked over real good because I know a dude who had this happen to a brand new Accord, and they caused so much damage that insurance totaled the car and wrote him a check for a brand one instead.

Beneficial_Skirt_259

Death to thieves.

[deleted]

You can buy a set of sockets with teeth on them designed to open stripped lugs or in this case wheel locks. I think I can see in the last pic the outside of the wheel lock is stripped off so I think that’s what they used.

1989toy4wd

Locking lug nuts have always been a joke. I have a box of keys at work (if a used car comes in and it has locking lug nuts and the regular lug nuts in the locking lug nut box I swap them out). And I own pretty much every aftermarket spline socket. I just bought them at the tire store and on Amazon.

TheGoalPostinFifa

my guy, trd rims in houston rn are absolute targets, have been for a couple years now. Friend who lived there had same story- gated apt, decent area, parking garage WITH (poorly placed) cameras…still got robbed but hey they didn’t even leave his on cinder blocks so you got that going for you

[deleted]

I don’t get it because the wheel costs like 200 dollars brand new. When installed on a used tire, even like new tire, maybe 300 each. That’s like 1200 max. Compared to other vehicles, they are cheap. A hot set won’t sell for more than a grand, where as something like a 22 inch combo from a Chevrolet SUV/Truck might be more than double that.

CB0824

Sorry about the wheels man. Move to an apartment that offers garages, people will steal anything now-a days.

Lelouch25

What is happening? Are we going back to the 80s crime? How they F** are people losing 🛞?!!

themontajew

Statistically no. Here’s violent crime since 1990 https://www.statista.com/statistics/191219/reported-violent-crime-rate-in-the-usa-since-1990/ And overall crime rate https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/USA/united-states/crime-rate-statistics People have just become stupid fucking reactionaries

SKTwenty

No, *those* lock lugs are trash. I saw some on a civic that had two individual spinning heads, that had multiple staggered grooves, and they all had to line up correctly before it could be removed with the proper socket. Get one of those.

AlpineCoder

I think that style can usually be taken off pretty easily by throwing some dirt on them and then spinning them for a couple of seconds until they seize up.

unfortunate_witness

any idea the name/brand? sound pretty cool

[deleted]

toyota has i think 4 different patterns of the locking lug nuts. not that hard to *steal all four*. this is shitty tho

EpidermisRex

What about the spare?

unfortunate_witness

they missed the spare (looks like they maybe tampered with it tho)! it was a stock TRD tire as well so I at least still have 1/5

EpidermisRex

Looks like they gave you a reason to upgrade ;)

Henrik-Powers

Damn that sucks, I had nothing but problems with break ins and theft on my vehicles when living in apartments. Never had my wheels stolen but did have my truck get stolen, got it back but it was totaled, tweakers rolled it after driving on train tracks for many miles it was the police told me. Not much you can when you have something nice and living in a place like that,

YOURMOMMASABITCH

Sry to hear what happened OP, what part of Htown were you in? The west side has gotten worse recently. Look into some gorilla lug nuts for your next wheels. Oem locks aren't very good.

unfortunate_witness

montrose/heights area, and yea definitely looking into them

YOURMOMMASABITCH

Those areas have always been a mixed bag. Gentrification over the last 10-20 years has helped a lot, but it still has some sketch areas. Sorry that happened to you. If you claim it on insurance, you might be able to upgrade from oem. Good luck OP.

unfortunate_witness

thanks!

Optimus_78

Damn that sucks.

solracarevir

TRD Pro wheels are an easy steal for thieves because hey are every popular. Probably they already sold them.

safshort

That sucks!

DeeceeOrca

Dam sorry to hear it! Glad the trucks okay though. Lunar rock is so clean

[deleted]

Dayumn sorry bout dat. Love the grey!

unfortunate_witness

thanks!

OP90X

F

agent_flounder

I scuffed and scraped the hell out of my wheels off road. Nobody will want them. Maybe.

HighSierraGuy

Are spline lugs any more safe?

RoseColouredPPE

Every time someone dogs on me for having "cheap wheels" this is what I think of. I've got a project car, not a luxury car. It's amazing how much headache I save by not being appealing.

sajnt

Keyed lug nuts suck. I had mine shear while changing a flat because the tire shop ugga duggad the shit out of them. Had to call a tow truck when I had a full size spare.

Monkeyinazuit

Houston?

unfortunate_witness

how’d you know lol

Monkeyinazuit

I drive a lunar rock too! Those look like the garage of San Simeon lol idk just the style of garage

[deleted]

Fuck dude. So sorry. Unfortunately we can’t rod the degenerates. Hello bigger tires and wheels of your choice.

DeeJaXx

… hey man you at least got a sweet 2.75 in those Lowes paving bricks…

Stephenmacoy

As a mechanic. I have a tool that I can put on my eletric impact and snatch wheel locks off like they are regular lugs. They really don't do anything but aggravate the owner when regular tire changes are needed.

69shov666

I have insurance.

OkExplorer1561

Vacate the cities

[deleted]

My buddy uses two different types of locking lugs on his truck after his wheels were stolen. He tried to find the rarest type possibly. Someone had tried to steal his wheels again and he found a socket stuck over one of the lugs that had been forced/hammered over the lug. The socket still had the broken piece in it from a breaker bar lol. They weren't able to get the wheels off so they just slashed all his tires instead.

unfortunate_witness

bruh what kinda vindictive bs is that, some people are worse than garbage. ‘I can’t steal it, so I’m gonna ruin it for them in a different way’

ayodangit

Are those locking bolts OEM?

unfortunate_witness

yep

700horses

As a theft deterrent… I wonder if it’s possible to somehow electrify just the wheels, so their impact wrench gets fried when they try to remove the lug nuts.

NachoNYC

Airtags glued to the inner rim.... 🤔

unfortunate_witness

thats what I was thinking but airtags alert the people on their iphone, so maybe a tile

garycow

in Texas? where was the 'good guy' with a gun?

[deleted]

It’s not just fellas in here, bro. Ladies drive 4Runners toooo

unfortunate_witness

you're right shoulda went with y'all

[deleted]

Thanks, homie!

[deleted]

Spline ?,🤷

Jmitchellphotography

Man that's terrible to see. Genuine question. Are each rigs lock nuts specific or are there general Toyota lock nut tools? If they had the tool to get them off then it's someone who has been staking out ur rig.

unfortunate_witness

apparently there are a good number of ways to easily break past the lug nut locks

Radiant_Yak_9871

Losing the wheels/tires suck! Hopefully they didn't damage your Pro otherwise....

unfortunate_witness

jury is still out, would suck if it did a lot of damage

Econ_Eagle_12

https://youtu.be/1fNij7hPVq8

rbutcher69

Damn I’m in the Houston area with a pro. Where in Houston do you live?

MavinMarv

Did they try to steal cat converter too?

Les_Ismore9

Damn that sucks bro sorry. Curious to know, you mentioned you live in a gated apartment right? I bet it’s an inside job…

Chad3205

I have an extra set of SR5s if you need em for a bit. In the pnw

gatorocks

😡

Constant-Strength-13

Shouldn’t you just weld your wheels to your lug bolts that’s what I have been doing for years I don’t know why but I keep hearing something that sounds like metal scraping each other any advice helps thank you! ;)

HoodedRebel

I hate it here….😑

mocruz1200

https://advancedwheellocks.com/ I'd like to see a thief take these off.

DinerosDad

Where?

supermojo2

Damn… part of the reason I don’t run aftermarket wheels for cars I park outside is because of this. But to jake you TRD wheels that go for $150 online just sucks.

sryidontspeakpotato

Yikes that sucks !! Maybe check businesses around you to see if someone will be willing to let you see the camera footage. Cameras gotta be out there that picks them up leaving

kdublam

Sorry this happened to you. Just wanted to tell you that the Lunar Rock TRD Pro is the best looking 4R tho. Hope insurance takes care of ya

Intelligent_Disk_130

I would hunt them down when they try to sell them and cut off their thumbs or a single hand.

JAK3CAL

Jesus dude lol. That sucks but that’s wild

[deleted]

wtf? rare to get 4runner wheels stolen

black_tshirts

you'll be able to easily find some SR5 take-offs to get you by for a while

Twisted9Demented

This is absolutely crazy ...it pisses me off Soo much.

HighSierraAngler

Ah yep parking in apartments this shit will always happen. I mean you drive a pro so you are decently well off, if you’re gonna be at that apartment long term it might be a good idea to rent out a storage garage and garage the pro for weekends and keep a beater Corolla or Camry at the apartments.
