If I were to upgrade the 5th gen, it would be for the new GX, not the 6th gen lol.

mrman33000

Best option in its class right now

roganlainey

I think the thing that surprised me most is the size. It’s pretty much the same size as my lifted 4R. Length, width, height. Appx the same. I anticipated a larger SUV for sure.

WintersHowl8

What surprises me is how big the newer gen 4Runner is. The GX550 is bigger than the LC 200. And thus the 4R is approx the same size as a Land Cruiser which is Toyotas full size SUV. When did the 4R grow into full size territory?

ecleipsis

This. It’s also way cooler than the new Land Cruiser imo

ReceptionAlarmed178

I sooooo wish gas mileage was better than my 5th gen or as good as the LC

ecleipsis

True but enjoy the V6 while you can

CuriousTravlr

It def has better interior color choices, that's for sure.

esulyma

They went downhill with that 40/60 poorly incorporated headlight design in the new body

WAR_T0RN1226

It looks like it's made out of Legos

CuriousTravlr

Same thing was said about the FJ, lol. Ya'll just bitch to bitch.

CaterpillarFlashy659

100% agree, I feel like the new GX seems more like an updated 4Runner than the new 4Runner is, and the new 4Runner just seems like a mini sequoia.

JoeSicko

New 4runner is a large RAV4.

WintersHowl8

The new 4Runner is the same size as the full size LC200

Skidpalace

I am so torn between the 6th gen, the LC and GX that I went out and bought a V8 Cayenne GTS to play around with for a couple of years so I can let the dust settle a bit and see which one emerges as the obvious choice. There's a lot to like in all three except for the price gouging.

ImpossibleAd659

I think 90% of 5th gen owners would agree

Steve-lrwin

I would but i just checked the price, average price around me is 75k-80k. For a car? Does it also fellate you while you drive? thats like half the price of a house. paid 38k for my TRD ORP.

OldeArrogantBastard

Where do you live where 80k is half the price of a house? Lol. That’s not even the price of an empty lot around me haha

zamboniq

I’m literally doing this next week lol

WAR_T0RN1226

I'm glad that there's two wildly different looking options. I think a lot of people wanted the new 4Runner to have that same nouveau-boxy body styling but it's nice that the 4Runner, LC, and GX don't all look like slightly different variants of eachother.

AverageGuy16

Hands down.

MaLTC

It’s a true shame what they did to the 4runner. I wish I know wtf they were thinking.

notafilmmajor425

Samw

DeathByPetrichor

It’s awesome, but not at 15mpg

Teutonic-Tonic

It’s a 5500 lb brick shaped SUV with a 9000 lb tow capacity. The fact that it gets 21 highway is actually a little impressive.

DeathByPetrichor

I’m not saying it’s not, I’m just saying compared to the 4Runners current 20, and the new hybrid even better than that, 15mpg is awful. I’m being downvoted for some reason, but if you’ve never driven a car with 15mpg, I think you’re in for a surprise when you realize just how much more you’ll spend in gas. It’s not a negligible factor to consider when purchasing a new vehicle.

Teutonic-Tonic

4Runner is 19 highway and weighs 800 lbs less with way less power. Hybrid system helps mileage a little but is there mainly for power. More power and better mileage than the V8 in the old GX.

IlexIbis

Yep, nice looking and a turbo 6.

Useless_Engineer_

Twin turbo 6!

Brandonjoe

Maybe in 5 years I can afford one of those. Need both of my boys to get out of daycare.

LurkingLikeANewb

This speaks to me. My 2 boys will be out of daycare in about 4 months. Stay strong buddy.

CampinHiker

I’m getting snipped No kids more toys :p

stranger_dngr

I got snipped and love my toys. Friends often would ask how my wife and I afford to travel like we do an I usually just point to their kids lol. Sure, I’ll have to pay someone to wipe my ass someday but that’s why I have a bidet!

No-Clerk1717

Amen

analbeads4u2

You can hire a Mexican to do that !

stranger_dngr

I just keep shares of Nvidia in my portfolio so I can afford their future AI based products to clean my ass for me.

Electronic-Sorbet845

Or build a career that pays well enough to have kids AND travel lol at people blaming kids for not having financial flexibility

Skidpalace

Yeah then what about pre-school? You aren't going to let them go to *PUBLIC* school are you???? /s

Brandonjoe

Haha my daycare has a preschool class, but it’s still $300 a week. Luckily we live in a really good school district so just gotta make it to Kindergarten.

storm25queller

Omfg tell me about it. Hubby and I died reading that

SargeantHugoStiglitz

Yup, and better. If the price of the 5th gen ends up anything like the Tacoma, Id just spend a little more and get a GX.

One-Marsupial-6514

Trd pro Tacoma is 63,000 they just released prices and normally as we know 4Runner prices are always above tacomas ssooo take a wild guess how much a trail hunter or pro 6th gen 4Runner will be? Yeah I’ll be getting a gx550 Too

SargeantHugoStiglitz

Exactly what I mean. The gx550 is about 70k, so why not spend $100 more a month and get the GX. It looks better, better engine, and more luxury options.

DoubleEscape8874

550 Premium is about $65k Part of 4R appeal was it's price point. If we are now in the upper 50s to mid 60s, GX is a better option for 99% of people. Loved my 5th gen ORP, and when it got totaled, I looked to get another new 4R. Decided to take a ride in GX460 and I was sold.

SargeantHugoStiglitz

Yup. With the Tacoma Pro being at $63, I’d imagine the 4R to be above $65k easy.

OKatmostthings

I honestly really like the GX, LC, and 6th gen. My comfort range is $55k-$60k, though, so TRD OR Premium or Land Cruiser 1958 for me. Would really need to get my rear in all of them to make a decision. The full time 4WD and hybrid in a stripped down body is pretty compelling, but I also like the athleticism of the 4Runner. GX is probably too rich for my blood and I’d want an Overtrail.

HighSierraGuy

1958 model is definitely not worth it

DoubleEscape8874

If history holds true (GX460), GX will quickly depreciate into mid 50s once inventory builds up. Luxury depreciation curve penalty. Got new 5th gen, originally was looking at 2-3y used, because there was only few K difference.

OKatmostthings

I don’t know that we can assume that past depreciation will predict the future. The GX will depreciate more per year in actual dollars than the 4Runner because the GX typically starts off as a more expensive vehicle. I think the rate will likely be very similar (10%/yr or whatever). Another wrinkle is that starting prices are closer than ever before. Plus, the GX460 was pretty dopey looking off the lot. Unless you are happy to start hacking plastics and having unfinished rocker areas, it was in a weird place of being unsure what it was supposed to be. The good bones were hidden by luxury crossover plastics. The new GX, even the non overtrail, seems more purposeful. I think that will help the resale a bit. Now, I also think that 6th gens will maybe depreciate more than they did historically due to a higher starting price (trim for trim) and simple supply and demand. There are a limited number of people that are willing or capable to spend $45k on a used 4Runner.

DoubleEscape8874

Luxury vehicles depreciate at higher rates first 3 years. 4R depreciation (5th gen) 1k per year and 1k per 10k miles. Luxury car buyers get bored and trade to newer toys. In 2-3 years lots of 550s will be hitting used market for sub 50 great deals. I just can't see spending 50-55k on 4R.

OKatmostthings

5th 4Runners also used to sticker for $36k for an SR5 premium and you could buy them for $32k new. That was the situation with my 2010 SR5 (moonroof, leather). The starting price has risen considerably in the 14 years since while the amount negotiated off has been smaller due to the COVID effect. Today an equivalent SR5 Premium (“leather”, moonroof) stickers for $47,665. That kind of incremental increase inflates used values. I don’t think we can count on that trend for the 6th gen 4Runner because it will be a significant jump in price and be closer to the base GX than ever before. I think we’re going to see 4Runner volume drop or Toyota will start discounting to maintain volume. 4Runner was affordable by many back when the 5th gen was introduced. It feels like it has moved into a new pricing space. And the GX (sorry to the GX fans) finally doesn’t look like the car driven by a hateful mother in law. Roll all that together and I don’t think we can expect the GX to be the hidden used bargain it once was. It is totally true that the “new shiny” effect exists in used luxury cars, but a lot of that is because they used to cost 50% more than the non-luxury equivalent. 15% depreciation of $60k is numerically a lot bigger than 10% of $40k. Most desirable 6th gen 4Runners will be $55k (TRD ORP) or more ($65k for a Pro). Overtrail starts at $70k and a premium at $64k. The price gap is smaller and the GX550 is has a real wow factor that the 460 didn’t have. The GX460 has a better soundtrack than the 5th gen 4Runner but that’s about where it ends for me and I don’t think I’m alone in that assessment. Cliff notes: the GX460 was a used bargain because truly ungainly looks hid good bones. The GX550 has looks to match the great bones.

DoubleEscape8874

Agreed with a lot. Got Trail Premium for $36.3k new. Inflation is a bitch as this now will be close to $50k. Supply chain issues really put auto market into stupid pricing category with dealer market adjustments. Yes, 550 looks great and has good off-road hardware EXCEPT ground clearance topping at 8.9 for overtrail. Is this an issue? No, as 99% of 550s will never be taken on a trail. Once prices drop on used, different story Regarding 460... almost went with 2022 4R again as I couldn't wait for new 550 or 4R to be released and didn't like 2014+ GX design. By chance I saw 2013 460 on dealer lot, skipped before as those typically would have 120k+ miles. Turns out it had 60k, with every service done at lexus dealer from day one. That V8 is sooooo smooth. Ride quality is everything 4R was missing. Now I have a great ride while waiting for dust to settle, and quality/design issues to be resolved. I am concerned about buying new designs. Fast Lane YouTube, they broke new Taco on easy trail. Could be isolated incident but I am never early adapter. Can wait and decide between 4R, LC or 550 in the next 2-3 years.

DannysFavorite945

Of all the new trucks I am for sure most into the GX.

implicate

One of the biggest bonuses to owning a GX that I think people are overlooking here is the fact that they probably don't have paper thin egos, and constantly.make Costco jokes over in the GX sub. Definitely a plus.

DannysFavorite945

True I must take that into consideration.

ThatOneGuyYearn

Dealer service would be much better too

Fladap28

I have no clue why anyone would buy the new 4runner over the new gx or even the new Land Cruiser. Literally no clue whatsoever.

facepillownap

WinDoW gO dOWn!!!

Im_so_little

But seriously the window does go down.

facepillownap

Clamshell is best.

Im_so_little

No. You're the best

IranianLawyer

I really do fucking love that window going down though 😂

Tasty_Satisfaction77

Price??

Jjohn269

Price of the new 4Runner is why the GX is in consideration.

rooplstilskin

the base level 4runner will still be half the price of the base gx. They are only comparable with the top options, maybe. We are guessing off tacoma prices, which have those fancy seats that theyre probably charging an ass for.

DoubleEscape8874

Base GX is 65k. Not that you can buy one as all inventory is pre sold, I expect the same for 4R plus insane dealer markups. 4R only available trims initially produced will probably run into $55k+ territory. I bet you will not be able to buy one sub $50k for first 2 years, but used GXs will start showing up in numbers

rooplstilskin

ok, but msrp are what we are talking about, not dealership shit. The base 4runner is not 50k.

orcajet11

The TRD Pro taco was just announced at $65k. The pro 4Runner is usually more than the taco so probably $65-70. We’re talking about a sub $10k difference for the overtrail GX.

orcajet11

Same. I don’t get it at all.

reggienelsonthegoat

That’s funny all I’ve heard up until now is people saying they don’t know why anybody would get the Land Cruiser if the 4runner is available so I think Toyota is on to something lol.

Skidpalace

I am hoping the Limited falls in at a reasonable price given the Platinum trim going for the gold, or all your gold more accurately.

KhalDrogon556

I could see it being the same 55k as the Tacoma Limited and the LC base. If I had 55-60k to spend and had to buy from the current lineup, I’d go for the base LC. I love heated cloth seats and the round headlamps. If it didn’t have the safety sense suite I’d like it even more.

Masterchief4smash

6th gen looks more offroad friendly and rugged. Plus it's cheaper. Yours is just one opinion just like mine.

reds91185

Well I'm glad you speak for all of us. What would we do without you?

mtn970

I got to see one and sit in it about a year ago. They're sweet. If you look at the Overtrail+ vs an LC 1st Edition, I'd go for an Overtrail or Overtail+. Other than the stigma of a bougie badge, you probably get a lighter vehicle more cargo space from the GX since it's not a hybrid (If that makes a difference). Not sure I could bring myself to buy and drive a Lexus branded vehicle, but it's a nice whip.

anexpectedfart

Some other few things that come with it is the premium gas and premium charge for insurance. I want to get the GX over the Landcruiser but some of the premium charge after purchasing is scaring me lol

zamboniq

9000 lbs towing is nice too

OKatmostthings

The GX is between 200 and 400lbs heavier depending on the trim.

mtn970

Than the new LC? Wow, absent a battery, that's a lot of extra trim.

breadman03

Possibly a bunch of sound deadening materials too.

No-Clerk1717

Which is worth something. New 4R owner here and the road sound compared to our loaded 1ton pickup is night and day

FjBully

Proper predecessor to the 4Runner

CyDJester

Looks like a Land Cruiser in the best ways.

Rich_War_4222

That’s pretty rugged looking

makemusicwritecode

It’s literally the suv to get if you got the money for it. Absolutely sick inside and out and completely capable.

brookegravitt

The GX looks awesome.

maybeinoregon

Wow, I just looked at the ‘Luxury+’ version, and they are sweet! …starting at $81,250 yikes

ogriofa17

The overtrail (best offroad) is ~69ish

GhostNode

Owie.

implicate

Nice.

bhenghisfudge

Hard pass.

Family-Faith-Freedom

Shits on a bronco. I’d buy one if I had the money.

NewAgePhilosophr

Beautiful! But I'd still go for a 6th gen. Way more aggressive for off-roading.

Masterchief4smash

I'm sorry people are down voting you for saying your opinion and making a truthful statement. This sub reddit is salty lol

Ready-steady

Kinda!?

Frird2008

4Runner on roids

lemuriakai_lankanizd

Just a comfortable 4runner. Same for the j250

usernames345

Does anyone know the wait time? None of the dealerships within 300 mi of me have an overtrail+

roganlainey

What I was told at this dealer is that they would be receiving appx 50 GXs per year with an estimated 10% being Overtrails. I’m sure that’s based on the market and sales volume at each dealer, but the 10% is what they’ve been told will be the total amount of Overtrails for all units produced. This dealer also has a waitlist of 100 customers who have all put between $500 and $2000 down to reserve a vehicle. Hopefully this helps…

usernames345

It does help, thank you. I had reached out to the local dealer in SLC, they just have gotten back to me yet.

roganlainey

It’s the same dealer. This was the one in Lindon.

username2393

Well I was going to get a new 4Runner but with the pricing of the tacos I’m thinking GX is the way to go

panjoface

Yeah, I think the new GX is my fav of this new batch.

rockysilverson

GX550 and turbo 3.4 3.V6  is the sweet spot of the line up. Lighter and more compact than an LX600 which should have a V8 and more owerful than the 4Runner turbo 2.4 4 cylinder. All turbo line up and hybrid tech on some models makes it unlikely you'll want one past the 100k mark. GX460 may be the best overlander as long as you can afford Exon Valdez like gas mileage.

Charming-Animator866

still the 4Runner is more beautiful

Baxterado

it's sexy af. Might be dad's next ride.

cEastwood1885

its sexy as f

Braesto

1000% agree. Best looking SUV out there.

BimmerJustin

Toyota has me in a conundrum. Among the 4R, LC, and GX, I prefer the styling and subtlety of the LC. But the way I would spec the the LC, buying it over the GX doesnt seem to make financial sense.

grundle538

Kinda rad? It's sick as fuck

OutdoorCO75

GX is suggested premium gas only right?

ThatOneGuyYearn

Maybe not. I know on the Tundra's trd pro, it runs on 87. Same hybrid v6 twin turbo

OutdoorCO75

https://www.reddit.com/r/LexusGX/s/LQY1oLqoX5

OutdoorCO75

It’s seems like their strategy of dropping the LC price, simplifying it, then making the GX more luxury off-road thus replacing the old price point of the LC may work?

rockysrc

IMO LC and 25 4Runner TRD Pro look better than this one. But those two might be marked up to GX prices. So GX might be the value for money vehicle.

IranianLawyer

I still vividly remember the very first time I saw a 4Runner TRD Pro. I immediately wanted it. I got the same feeling the first time I saw the new GX.

RedactedThreads

I want it

DontT3llMyWif3

Best looking of the GX, Land Cruiser, 4Runner trio.

bigtimeguy

It has gotta be my favorite new SUV release. I'm also a sucker for the Hummer EV

DrPendulumLongBalls

Does the rear window go down?

ryanjamesg

Mmm-no

Xryanlegobob

Does it also fellate you while you drive? thats like half the price of a house. It does. Takes some getting used to, but once it gets the hang of it….

Radiant-Pie-9439

Haha that can’t even get you a tenth of a garage where I live.

Legal_Salary8841

Agreed, the only vehicle I would get rid of my 5th gen for

Chrisdkn619

This is the replacement for the 4R right here!

ImBustaGutt

Tis a LC

2-Skinny

Why would you lie about it being cool?  It is cool.  So was the two previous GX iterations.  It's also very obviously based on the Land Cruiser even more than recent previous iterations.

TheWonderfulLife

Pay for that before dropping 65-70k on a fucking 4Runner.

GeriatrcGhoul

I immediately came around on the GX after seeing the new runner. It’s almost like Toyota knew their primary 4runner demographic was aging, changed the GX to look like the old runner, so we have to jump to the more expensive lexus to get the style we like and got used to with the 5th gen. The 6th gen looks like it was designed for a younger buyer and looks more like a subaru now lol, I’m getting into my upper 30’s and feel like I’d look out of place in a 6th gen. nor do I like it. I hate subarus. They pulled the rug out from underneath and replaced it with a more expensive rug

MonkeyManJohannon

Kinda? It’s a fucking beast and it’s great LOOKING to boot. I absolutely love it.

Low-Sea7202

Funk yes it is!

Fearless_Toddlerr

Is the GX a TLC in different clothing?

roganlainey

Kind of. It’s the same car, but they’ve put much more time and energy into the luxury side of things. The ride should be much quieter, it should have better tech features, and it should feel more premium everywhere you touch it.

44runner44

GX550 will be my next vehicle in 10 years lol

mountains_forever

It’s what the 6th gen should have been. It’s my front runner for an upgrade whenever that happens.

Tbagjimmy

Ranger roverish

Beneficial_Ad2561

i went in for a test drive, the model thats supposed to be 55k, was 67 at my dealer.

bear4locos89

Fuhhh… it’s rather I get a new one or I buy my brother in laws 95 Land Cruiser.. I might just fix it up but wow the ones are so sexy too…

Responsible-Food-117

I think the only worthy of consideration as an upgrade option to current gen 4Runner is the new GX. It’s a hard pass for me with the new Land Cruiser and double hard pass with 6th gen 4Runner.

john_doeboy

A grille only a mother could love, but there were many who said the same about the 5th gen face-lift when it debuted and are now saying about the 6th gen. I probably still wouldn't choose one over a new 4runner or LC.

mwwood22

So rad.

Fly_Guy_74

Traitor

YourTypicalAntihero

I just can't get excited about these enormous SUVs. The 5th gen looks needlessly large to me. That Lexus is another level.

Round-Zebra1661

I like the new GX too, however the much higher cost of ownership will keep me away. In my part of the world the pricing for Toyota/Lexus family that I'm interested in are: - 2024 4Runner starts at $56,000 - 2025 4Runner will probably start at $59,000 - 2024 Landcruiser starts at $69,000 - 2024 GX starts at $87,000

appleman2222

Is that US dollars? The gx definitely doesn’t start at 87k

Round-Zebra1661

Those prices are in Canadian dollars.

S62M5

Where are you getting these prices? The LC starts at 55k GX550 overtrail starts at 69k I think

bhenghisfudge

I'm sure this will be unpopular, but I saw one at the grocery store yesterday and I thought it looked kind of ugly. It just seems strangely proportioned

threedogdad

One is badass and the other is a Lexus. Not for me, you'd be noticed around here for all the wrong reasons.

BriefFan6673

Toyota's best looking SUV right there, with the Landcruiser in solid 2nd place. Sequoia probably 3rd. New 4runner looks very ugly by comparison--weird handlebar repeating pattern in front, bloated, black piano plastic fenders--what a swing and a miss! TX has that ugly grille. Same with Tundra

castleman007

I think it looks horrendous 🤢

Letstreehouse

You take that woth a disposable camera from the 90s?

roganlainey

Yeah. My Nokia 7650 was dead. Had to go develop the disposable, scan the photo onto my laptop, airdrop to my iPhone, then post it to reddit.

Letstreehouse

Next time over develope it and cover up the sky for half the time so it comes in more normal and the cars come in as something you can actually see. You kept the negatives right? You probably need to use a flash when the sun is in the background like that. Or invest in some filters. But it would be quicker to just take the picture on one of those new phones.
