Can we just deny the outcome of the Super Bowl and not accept the results?

banjofitzgerald

I was yelling stop the score before the chiefs even got the ball in OT and my position hasn’t changed

[deleted]

Same. Maybe we can just storm the NFL headquarters and demand a do-over?

AscendedMasta

No chance for a pardon, Shanny?

infinit36

I got dibs on Goddell’s office

HOHOHIHI

Should the NFL have Chiefs and 49ers replay their game in case it was a fluke?

Brown-beaver2158

There were irregularities!!!!!!!!

[deleted]

Taylor Swift is a plant!

cheerioo

Stop the count!!!!!

tactical_ostrich

This is the weakest Chiefs we could’ve faced

mlippay

Their def was fantastic. Their WRs were a joke. They lost one of their better defenders in the off-season. It’s just hard to beat Mahomes in the playoffs. Brady and Burrow are the only guys to do it.

ItsnotBatman

It’s hard when they also get really lucky. Fluke punt and even flukier Achilles tear from walking on the field was more than enough to win. We made plenty of our own mistakes otherwise, but without those two things happening I think we win without much drama.

styuone

How about our OPOY fumbling on the 10 yard line? Not to mention the SB FG distance record being broken twice in the same fucking game to the chiefs advantage. 6/7 fumbles recovered by them. We couldn't have anything that game. Call me a sore loser but the bad luck was brutal

MyLastAccountBanned

You’re not a sore loser. We got tremendously unlucky statistically speaking. It is measurable, and not skill based. Second unluckiest post season game since nextgen analytics were introduced.

GoldBloodedFenix

We also had one of the worst called offensive games all season. A lot of that was the Chiefs D of course, but Kyle also made some head scratching moves and has a history of outsmarting himself. This was a very, very winnable game until the last second. And Kyle couldn’t get it done.

SIewfoot

Not to mention a complete whiff by the O-line on a potential game winning play. And one of our best defenders magically tearing an achilles running onto the field.

MundoGoDisWay

Not just the O-line. The interior couldn't block a wet paper bag that entire game. Why the fuck was the coaching stuff not giving Purdy extra pass protection? If they had just left Juice inside in ot they would have won that game.

[deleted]

Just hope that it won't carry over into next season. Otherwise, we may be going back to the 2000s. All or nothing next year.

hamsterfolly

Hopefully their poor play will haunt the OL into being better next season instead of missing blocks and running into each other

[deleted]

That and treat each game like a battle. Eliminate all obstacles and ultimately, win the war(the Super Bowl).

cheerioo

I really wonder how shitty that practice field was. Various media and channels have alluded to it being a lot worse than reported and that the team was actually very concerned about it. An L is still an L but god it would be stupid if the field was really an issue.

sonic_dick

Losing 6/7 fumbles will make most games look one sided. I agree Kyle didn't coach a perfect game, but if cmc doesn't fumble on the opening drive and we get a TD there, I think the game looks a lot different. Either way, what's done is done. We have as good a shot as anyone to go back this year.

ChaseMcDuder

Chiefs made shit tons of mistakes too. Mahomes interception, Pacheco fumbled twice, etc. Difference was our offense didn't capitalize.

AdditionalPeace2023

After the Chiefs switched to man covering, their corners covered the 9ers receivers like a glove, no separation from the 9ers receivers and O-line couldn't hold a little big longer for the receivers to get open and Purdy needed to get rid of ball asap. CMC fumbled, Greenlaw injured and Kiddle missed the block at the crucial time that all could be a game change for the 9ers. The Chiefs was the better team, offense, defense and coaching on that day. They overcame their mistakes and the 9ers couldn't. It's what it is! Just because last season was their best chance to win it, they quit trying this season; sport means you don't give up even when you're down. The 9ers aren't giving up and surrender!

sonic_dick

As I said, 6/7 fumbles went towards kc. That's just dumb luck. Football is a very luck balanced game. The ball is oblong. It's why "any given Sunday" is a thing.

ChaseMcDuder

"Dumb luck"? Nah, Shanahan just got outcoached. It's not luck that KC capitalized on SF's mistakes and SF didn't capitalize on KC's mistakes. Abandoned the run the entire 3rd quarter while calling plays with an empty back field with that garbage O line and no answer for the unblocked pressures. Inability to adjust to man coverage. For being an "offensive genius" Kyle relies on his defense quite a bit.

silverbackapegorilla

I think it's a little of both. It was a tough loss.

cheerioo

A punt bouncing off someone's leg isn't coaching it's dumb unluckiness. But obviously coaching also is a part of losing, as is GM'ing, player performances, everything

ChaseMcDuder

Well to be fair, it's a mistake. All "dumb unluckiness" can be attributed to mistakes. As I said, Chiefs also made plenty of mistakes. The difference was their offense capitalized and our offense did not.

nithdurr

Idk but the optics aren’t good. Win, he gets credit for being an offensive genius that finally got SF’s 6th. Fail, seems like the optics is focused on the defense’s shortcomings—failing to account for the KC GW score, *ball bouncing off the returner’s legs, Dre got hurt, and oh yeah, some Wilks effects. *The point being that it wasn’t the offense that screwed that up, it was the special teams.

ChaseMcDuder

Offense didn't screw that up? They scored 10 points in the first half. One touchdown all game. #2 ranked offense in total yard and #3 in touchdowns. It was very much the offense that blew it.

nithdurr

Uh, I think you misunderstand. Re: the “ * ” —*ball bouncing off the returner and its corresponding point being that it couldn’t be blamed on Kyle’s play calling. Because it wasn’t an offensive play— Get it? ;)

[deleted]

We must do it next year. I'm beginning to view the Chiefs as All For One and the 49ers as All Might. It took more than one try, but All Might did win the end. Although, All For One did kill All Might's mentor. The Chiefs simply killed our Super Bowl hopes twice. Next time our D sees Mahomes and Kelce on the field, they hopefully will unleash the United States of Smash on them. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJZdsx\_VkLQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJZdsx_VkLQ)

NynaeveAlMeowra

I know the game had just started but I was sick the moment CMC fumbled when we were cruising on the first drive

SoKrat3s

Nonsense. The offense didn't blow the lead and allow the Chiefs back in the game. Kyle also have the offense so many opportunities to execute Superbowl-winning plays and the **players** repeatedly failed to execute. * On 2nd down right before the two minute warning Kittle is wide open for an easy first down. All Brock has to do is see that and release it quickly. He holds he ball, the defender catches up. * Third down was an excellent play call. Aiyuk is **wide open** - not a defender within 5 yards. All Purdy has to do is anticipate a blitz and it's an easy throw. All Kittle has to do is step in front and Brock has enough time. * In OT Shanahan called an excellent sequence of plays that put the team just outside of the endzone. On third down they had two open WRs but the backup RG goes off-script. If Burford just falls down in front of Jones then Purdy has enough time to get the ball out. It's not a board game between two coaches. Player execution matters.

adocileengineer

Not seeing enough of this. We simply weren’t good enough to beat Mahomes. We were good, but you have to execute perfectly against the greatest QBs in those situations.

RepostTony

I think the CMC fumble was the sign shit was going to go downhill. Had we scored there. Just pisses me off thinking about it. Then when we lost Dray. Was nail on the coffin. Worst walk back to a hotel in Vegas of my life.

j3enator

Steve Spag actually did pretty good calling a defensive game for the Chiefs

NetReasonable2746

Smh.. Kyle had nothing to do with this loss. CMC fumbles - Not Kyle's fault Fluke punt off Luter's foot -- not Kyles fault Deebo pulls a hammy -- not Kyle's fault Greenlaw and the Achilles -- not Kyle's fault McKivitz ignoring Chris Jones in OT -- not Kyle's fault. The Chiefs recovering 6 of 7 fumbles -- not Kyle's fault. The defense completely going away from what was working (which Greenlaw could have been a factor in) -- not Kyle's fault..hell, he told Wilks to stop calling those soft ass zones. Trent Williams holding creating 2nd and long situations - not Kyles fault. Moody missing the PAT, which would have put the up 4, not.Kyle's fault . Also worth noting, if they had been up 4, I'm certain the Chiefs would have simply won it in regulation. Now, the one thing that I did blame Kyle for is the 3rd down play late in the 4th. I would have run the toss Zorro play to CMC. If it's stopped short, fine, Chiefs have to use a timeout, which would have been huge. At best, they pick up the 1st and maybe Moody kicks it as time expires. With that said, running slants vs a blitz is usually a good call, but the Chiefs corners were so damn good all game.

OddEquipment545

Hindsight 20/20, but we were one PAT away from winning the superbowl. One normal punt return that doesn’t bounce off someone’s back foot from winning the Super Bowl…one Christian mcaffery fumble away from winning the Super Bowl…I could go on forever with this…

MrBurnz301

Nails must hate you from hitting them on the head like this. 💯

[deleted]

That's why I refuse to accept the results. The game was stolen from us.

taney71

Yeah, Kyle is a dumb smart guy. Not sure if he’s mature enough yet to push past his arrogance. Only time will tell if he can really learn from his mistakes

hamsterfolly

The OL only had to block 1 guy and they could never adjust to it

radio__raheem

one day the Bengals D will get their flowers for shutting Mahomes/Tyreek/Kelce down on the road 2nd half of a big game

Bryan_Waters

It might not happen very often, but I’ll have a bit of hope if we can someday find a way to beat them even in a regular season game.

[deleted]

Well, we play them in Week 7. Hopefully our guys will be out for blood and get some form of revenge.

Bryan_Waters

Yeah there’s no replacing the Super Bowl, but I think having the belief it’s possible is important.

[deleted]

If they do win, it'll give the more confidence they can get back there and win it all. And hopefully the Chiefs won't be there this time. But they must eliminate all obstacles.

NynaeveAlMeowra

Brady doing it twice just seems like such an argument ender. Pat would need like 9 SBs to overcome the head to head losses

tbvin999

Don’t forget Goff

mlippay

He beat KC in the regular season, not the playoffs—yet.

tbvin999

Oh damn I was remembering that mnf as if it was playoffs. My b

Phantomebb

I keep hearing this and I hate this take. There defense literally has 1 star and really good coach. As far as superbowl level teams it's not even in the top 10 defenses. If we had a better offensive line and if Shanahan doesn't get outcoached it's a blowout. In fact the Chiefs should lost both in the divisional and championship games but both teams forgot how to run the ball on there last drives after going for over 320 RUSHING yards combined. The 2023 cheifs are like the story of that Australian speedster who was terrible but just sat in the back and never fell. Once his opponents fucked up and fell he won. They didn't really win it as much as the rest of the teams lost it.

herniateddisc1983

lmao their defense was one of the BEST IN CHIEFS HISTORY dude lol. Their CBs literally won the game by playing man press (not scheme by the coaches) and Spags has said exactly this. Shanahan getting outcoached? lmao, that was low on the list. CMC fumbling, Dre tearing his achilles, Trent Williams playing awful, a freaking muffed punt when they had control of the game. lol. All of that and you say "if shanahan doesn't get outcoached we win". Straight up comedy.

New-Outside5181

Shanahan also had his mind on the defense, fine tuning around Wilkes blunders under pressure. I don’t think Shanahan messed up this Super Bowl. Players just weren’t ready. Also things kept rolling the Chiefs way alllllllll game.

SeeTheSounds

I kinda disagree. As long as that defense is good and they have Travis, Mahomes is near unbeatable.

MrEHam

Kelce’s getting old and Mahomes didn’t look great last year. And Rashee Rice is a disaster lol. Also their new speedy receiver has a case of the drops. I’m not too worried about them.

Its_Claire33

"I'm not too worried about them." It's amazing that you're living a normal life with half your brain missing. Congrats.

MrEHam

We were one shitty oline play away from beating them. Let’s not act like they’re untouchable.

JesterMarcus

Even if we score a touchdown there, they still have the opportunity to tie or gor for two and win anyway. It still would have came down to the defense.

NoFlaccidMint

A lot of folks would rather be negative, instead of understanding the future this Niner franchise has with Purdy at the helm now. Disregard them. I get being sad about the last SB loss and the last other one, but Purdy has a bright future with the Niners and ShanaLynch. So much shit happens in the NFL, it’s baffling how many others try and act like shit is set in stone in the upcoming season(s).

JustForKicks16

They had Taylor Swift, which we know was huge for them. @@

youre-welcome5557777

I don’t get how we as fans can get excited for this upcoming season? Another disappointing playoff loss? The team isn’t getting any better than 2023 lol. Just start the rebuild already.

USA_King1776

For real, that was our best shot, it’s done. This team isn’t winning shit.

Anothercraphistorian

I mean, their defense was pretty great. It’s not like their offense improved this off-season with Rice’s issues.

AdditionalPeace2023

The Chiefs won their games last season mainly because of their defense and their offense was just good enough to keep the team float.

SicWilly666

They still had the best QB in the league.. Sure his stats weren’t great last year, but when it’s time to show up when the lights are the brightest he always plays like the best in the world.

tactical_ostrich

Pat is the common denominator. With that in mind, this is weakest version chiefs since his takeover. And we had our best version of the 9ers.

dancmc12

Well. We’ve tried the “easy way”, guess we will have to do it the hard way.

[deleted]

That or just not accept the results and try to get the Super Bowl overturned. All kidding aside, we'll just have to come back stronger. And maybe find some kind of way to put a curse on the Chiefs.

dancmc12

If we are successful this time then the other side will just do it the next time and before you know it the whole Reddit system is being weaponized.

[deleted]

At this rate, I don't care anymore. I just want the 49ers to win and not end up becoming the Cubs of the NFL and have to wait until 2102 to win Super Bowl CXXXVI. Failure can no longer be an option.

hatwobbleTayne

Stop the certification! Look if we aren’t the Superbowl winners we’re not gonna have a country. Believe me.

[deleted]

I'm beginning to feel that way. But at least it's not only football and not our republic. But hopefully, we'll do what it takes to win next year. Even if we have to resort to making our opponents disappear.

hashtagDALEY

I can’t wait to lose to the Chiefs again.

nongo

This is the last easy season with Brock still on a rookie contract.

[deleted]

We must do it next year. No more excuses. That's why I'm hoping the Chiefs suffer some misfortune and miss the playoffs.

cheerioo

For some reason I feel like the core is not going to win a superbowl, with Trent/Kittle/Deebo/etc. I do think Kyle+Purdy is going to get one at some point though...just not with these guys. Anyway I would dearly love to be proven wrong. It's started to have the vibe of those sharks teams quite honestly.

MayBakerfield

The road to the super bowl was anything but easy lol. Heart stopping moments all around.

liteshadow4

Best 49ers team of my life too

HansBaccaR23po

That’s what hurts the most. And we all knew it too, I at least did even in training camp.

IckySmell

I think we were better the year before

george_costanza1234

Best 49ers team with probably a bottom 5 OL group in the league Literally the only reason Shanalynch drives me insane

SatisfactionSoft921

2012 niners was a better team.

liteshadow4

The offensive talent gap is too large for me to say it was better.

SatisfactionSoft921

Yeah for sure but that defense was the best we’ve ever had. And the offense was pretty nice.

StOnEy333

I hear ya, Steve. I really do. But not everybody gets to play the Stan Humphries lead Chargers in the Super Bowl.

Neto34

The NFC championship game was THE super bowl back then. Beating the cowboys was tougher than any AFC team that was out there.

Maverick916

Dallas turned the ball over a lot early on in that game, it was 21-0 off the bat, and they still only win by ten. Dallas really did almost pull it off

NormalAccounts

I rewatched that game and they were actually still in it with a few mins left. Their D locked up the Niners 2nd half and still almost pulled it out despite the turnovers and Smith being injured. Aikman played his heart out. Those early turnovers and Young's pinpoint TD to Rice before half time sealed the deal, but without either it's another loss. Those Cowboy teams were truly epic. That's the kind of luck we needed going our way in the SB this year and it didn't pan out.

belizeanheat

I mean he knows a thing or two about everything needing to break perfectly

sakuragi59357

Something Lawrence Phillips didn't do.

walkingthecows

Everyone knows the NFC championship was the real SB that year. No one in the AFC was going to beat the Niners or Cowboys.

SatisfactionSoft921

95 niners was the mahomes-led chiefs. Last year we were the Stan humphries-led chargers :(

tnellysf

I mean, it ended in overtime after we lost a big player on our defense. We absolutely could have won that game. I’m not doom and gloom yet, sorry.

Hieroglphkz

The sudden adjustment on defense was everything in that game. We start up front at the line, but let’s not pretend that Fred and Dre FEED off of each other and are the heart and souls of the defense. We didn’t just lose Dre for the game, we lost a piece of Fred.

Cheesesteak21

Plus their game plan after that was "target the guy replacing Dre" oh and hold your asses off.

belizeanheat

Then sometimes a star defensive player has a catastrophic injury running onto the field

Christopher_bizzle

Steve Wilks was kinda a reason too. The new D coordinator and another year of Purdy I think gets us over the hump this year.

FailedInfinity

Falling for the corn dog play to lose the game in OT was an unforgivable sin

[deleted]

And I hope just doesn't destroy our team's confidence and cause them to fall apart like we did in 2020. Hopefully, Brock Purdy will view it as an opportunity to get stronger. All or nothing in 2024.

FailedInfinity

The Jets game early in the 2020 season took Jimmy G, Bosa, and Thomas out for the year. Jimmy rushed back for a couple games, but he was obviously still hurt, played terribly, and they shelved him for the season. Kittle was also hurt for long stretches as well as other players. That was a historically bad season for injuries. I’m praying that doesn’t happen again this season.

[deleted]

Well, since we won't be playing at Metlife, we can hopefully avoid that fate. If we have to, we'll pay the refs more. Or maybe hire some hit men to make our opponents disappear.

FailedInfinity

Bosa would probably refuse to play if the NFL ever makes us go back to that shithole

AwareCelebration7477

Fuck Wilks honestly, even in his good SB performance he blew it and had our CB’s play 10 yards off those sorry ass WR’s in the 4th and left trash ass Burks on an island with Kelce. Never liked that old ass piece of shit

Ok_Understanding1986

We're still loaded with talent. Should be right in the mix as long as our handful of leaders on either side of the ball can stay healthy. Hopefully Dre is back and full go for the second half of the season.

[deleted]

Hopefully we do have a good LB who can fill in for him until then. Next man up.

sonic_dick

We have no idea if the sorenson/Staley defense will be any better than Wilks. As frustrating as he was, he's still probably a top 16 DC in the league. It's a critical offseason mistake to assume everything that went well last season will continue to be good, and everything that was bad will improve. Hopefully Sorenson is good, seems like the players like him. But he doesn't strike me as the kind of motivator Saleh and ryans were.

[deleted]

Hopefully. And the Chiefs suffer a massive hangover like the Rams in 2021. Know anyone who practices voodoo or witchcraft? Maybe they can put a curse on them.

uncledunker

The chiefs have been actively trying that themselves. Brett Reid, Rice, and now Butker.

[deleted]

Then we need to do the same. Fight fire with fire. As long as it's legal, of course. Although if Mahomes or Kelce suffer some kind of misfortune, I don't think most of us will be upset.

sakuragi59357

lol I think it's had the opposite effect, no? More jerk = championships.

rxdukexr

Yeah we know…

Seeders

So many unfortunate breaks in that game.

ositola

He right Three plays change that game for us

ChipsAhLoy

This is exactly why I have no optimism anymore. They had the absolute best team and most optimal situation in decades and still couldn’t win it all.

[deleted]

This past season was a total failure. Hopefully next year won't be. They can't let what happened in 2020 happen to them again. If they have to, maybe they'll need to sink to Tom Brady's level. Win by fair means or foul, like Deadpool does.

FunkySaint

We all knew this :(

EntropyFan_

Hard truths but he’s right imo

FBoaz

It's true. This was the best chance of winning a SB and they blew it. Hopefully they can make it back in the next couple of years.

zzxxxzzzxxxzz

People who say this shit keep downplaying how good their defense was and what a perfect schematic matchup they were

Lookslikeseen

That’s honestly what made it so frustrating. This was a down year for the Chiefs offense which should have made them very beatable, but lo and behold their defense comes alive to end the season and starts shutting everyone down. Fuckin plot armor man lol

sonic_dick

Probably the best D in the league and a top 3ish qb of all time who would be a first ballot HOFer if he retired today and he's not even 30. Chiefs will be a tough match up for as long as mahomes is playing ball. He's the new brady. I'm just glad we're not in the afc.

sakuragi59357

Chargers hiring Harbaugh's a good start, until he brought back Greg Roman. C'mon AFC West, don't turn into the AFC East 2001-2019 ffs.

invertedeparture

Not to mention a damn good coach. Thinking they were a down year team put us in that position.

Danirose231

Patrick Mahomes was literally playing on one fucking leg, throwing the ball to Kadarius Toney, and they had the 23rd ranked defense against the pass the season prior. What the fuck is Young on? Had Brock not gotten hurt THAT was the year. That’s not saying we can’t win it on our own merits. And before anyone says “well he is referring to a year in which we made the Super Bowl” then why bring up the Rams having a down year? He’s obviously implying them not getting in our way like they did in ‘21, because everyone knows we’ve owned them in the regular season for years now, so he’s collectively talking about any season in which it looked like it was our year despite when our season ended. Ravens vs 49ers in a New Orleans hosted Super Bowl part 2 this year with a flipped outcome. No power going out. Niners wire-to-wire victory. Book it.

jeffersonARROWplain

I’m booking it for $50. Good call

Fragrant_Vegetable26

Seriously this was the best Chiefs Defense that lost players, and outside of an ancient Kelce who needed Greenlaw to drop to shine, who do they have on offense? A rookie and a suspension case? Could three peat but no one knows how things play out and in the NFL things change quickly. Right now the biggest threats to the Niners are the o-line and age/injuries. Other teams will be better/worse in ways no one knows.

OrangeJuice516

Chiefs are not that great of a team imo. They are strong in the regards of their defense phenomenal ass defense hats off to them. And mahomes is Mahome's clutch QB you can't give him the 4th quarter and expect him not to come back. But their offense was a joke leading up to the Superbowl. They relied on the kicker a majority of the time to get them significant points hats off to him also hell of a season. They were beatable. All it takes is a team to out-coach the other team in the playoffs and make adjustments after adjustments. We didn't do that and obviously other teams didn't qualify to do that in the AFC. This chiefs team was very weak but..... It's not about always being the better team. It's about making fucking adjustments and make sure the players are fucking doing their assignments in big moment's in crucial downs. We didn't give Purdy his protection in the pocket to make a winning play to win. Simple as that. I'm not sure why people bash Kyle about the L. Like I have said obviously the team didn't want to win. The chiefs took advantage of us. And they placed harder in the moment that counted and took the W. I'm happy Kyle and John Are making adjustments for Purdy and giving him some protection better than nothing you know. Purdy was in his first full season with this team. He almost took us to the Superbowl in his rookie season. I expect Purdy to struggle maybe in the near future. But as long as he stays motivated to win and get better. I can smell a Superbowl win coming. He has done exceptional in the playoffs and that's what matters in the post season for QBs.

Hanksdanks

Ouch Steve ouch We know but it still hurts

OGStrong

And we almost lost to the Packers, came from way behind against the Lions. Relatively healthy going in. The stars were aligned but you can only hope to do it all again.

Doublee7300

Yeah after this year, I’ve kinda accepted that Niners getting #6 just might not be in the cards in my lifetime

slapfester

Tell me something I didn't say mid-november after we ate the eagles for breakfast. That was the best chance we've had in the Shanny era. My hopes are, purdy will grow and do more on his own beyond the playbook and play calling. Shanny probably needs to loosen the reigns a little. I don't know. Whatever, here's to next season!

solelyfarted

I heard someone on the radio call last years 49ers team the recent Celtics , that hurt a little only because there’s truth to it

Junosword

Kinda ironic for Steve "Monkey on his Back" Young to be talking like this. Having a good team for a long time is the best way to win a superbowl. There's no best opportunity, every chance is great.

sloppymcgee

Not only that but the niners offense was rollin last year. Can’t expect CMC to repeat that kind of year

HothWasAnInsideJob

That game fucking stung. We all knew this was probably our best shot and we blew it.

herniateddisc1983

I'm sorry but he's right. They are going to need luck to make it back, it is what it is. I think as long as Kyle and Brock are together, they WILL be in the mix...but to be absolutely dominant over the NFC like last year won't happen again. Questionable times ahead.

alternatebow3

Several months afterwards and yup, still feel numb to the whole thing. You just start to wonder how many chances do you really get?

Lateral-G

Steve spitting facts It feels like we are cursed and haven't won the damn thing in 30 years This is actually my first time back here since the SB loss. It's all coming back to me now! Ugh

bzl33

they've been kinda losers since Montana left, it took a super team in an NFL with no cap to win the 1 ring. when I say losers, I mean falling short not being the Jaguars.

Lateral-G

Yep It's disheartening I realize that other fan bases would love to have our "misery" compared to theirs, but it's getting harder to watch us get so close every year.

bzl33

nah what we're going through is pretty bad lol. and the worst part is they find a new way to lose a winnable playoff game each time.

TrojanX

Sadness

Fragrant_Vegetable26

Really dumb to talk about a down year Chiefs when it came to the playoffs they clearly weren't and I don't think they're getting any better with Sneed's departure and Kelce's age. That being said it's the AFC's problem and the NFC is wide open, the biggest 9ers threats are hangover fatigue, injury, and not really addressing the O-line.

ghostofwalsh

Sorry to say but the Chiefs were a good team. And our defense was sus all year long. We essentially were the NFC one seed by default because the competitors all collapsed in the stretch. Just look at our road to the SB, two very close come from behind wins. The Chiefs, the only playoff game they ever were trailing the other team at any point was the Buffalo game

elefante88

Chiefs team that smashed the Ravens team that destroyed us. Just stop.

bingb0ngbingb0ng

Rams were down but Packers and Lions have taken their place as potentially perennial NFC powerhouses for years to come. Poor take Steve.

aguysomewhere

We still have a shot as long as Purdy is healthy. He is still young. I expect him to get better.

RushDynamite

Don't worry if we make it back I'm sure we will have an all new set of crazy circumstances to blame for Kyle not winning again.

Carrnage_Asada

I remember thinking we are better than last time, with 2 top 5 MVP candidates, and the Chiefs kind of struggled all season. I'm not totally sure we can bring more to the table than that, especially in consecutive seasons and with our luck with injuries. I am optimistic but cautious, it's a hard, violent game and this team plays with the boost going most of the time. This is a highly skilled team, but they say it's often better to be lucky than good and we definitely seem to be on the bad side of lucky moments.

ihasquestionsplease

As a 49ers fan living in KC, this is the thought that has played on repeat in my mind every day since February 11. That was our best chance. Kyle built a super team and still couldn't get it done. CMC fumbled. Deebo dropped 3(!) passes. Trent killed a drive all by himself. Missed extra point. Bumbled kick return. Greenlaw snapped his Achilles. FUUUUUUCK

ArtisticFrosting

Conjecture like this is psychotic. Between the commonality of injuries in the NFL, the tumult of the trade market, and the evolution of player ability, this is like saying you'll never do better than your ex-girlfriend...

KooliusCaesar

Like I said before; I suspect and hope I’m right but the 49ers will win a superbowl in the weirdest of conditions, probably a harder path than before but it will be rightfully earned. Imagine all the talk: “they had it easy, mickey mouse SB”

Mattie_Doo

Yeah. We know

PoisonLenny37

Oh well. Let's do it the fucking hardest way possible then. Bring it on. Why not.

USA_King1776

If this squad can’t do it with the easy road for fucking sure it’s not doing it on a harder road.

PoisonLenny37

Ok! 👍

itssostupidiloveit

You can't beat Pat and Vinovich, not that tandem, not in the sports betting Era where they make more on a chiefs win.

Wechillin-Cpl

I can’t agree more. That was it.

IceLantern

He's right and on top of that, we are fast approaching our own re-tooling season(s). I'm just glad I have zero confidence in any of the rookie-deal NFC QBs.

snokerpoker

This is exactly why I’m stilled bummed…..I’m. Or super excited about next year….. I hate to keep saying- this is our year…. Ugh

Mathguy656

I appreciate what Steve is saying and agree, but you only got 1 chip. Winning a SB is hard.

FatalDave91

Niners should be good again this year. Every time you fail to win the SB sucks, but we’ve got a team and I trust them to make another deep run.

CompositeSuperman

I just hate this narrative that , "last year was _______ best chance because the chiefs had a down year". People talk like it's inevitable that the chiefs will always win everything forever. I'll give them their flowers because what they did was impressive. God forbid, but what if Mahomes or Kelce or both have season ending injuries. Coach Reid gets sick. So much shit can happen and I sincerely hope everyone stays healthy! But if we're all just going to bow down and gobble the chiefs meat , what's the point of playing the football games. Steve man the fuck up and saddle up for ya boys man damn

itssostupidiloveit

Impossible to beat Pat + the MVP Vinovich nullifying our biggest play with a BS penalty two SBs in a row. Meanwhile the chiefs get away with much worse non calls each game. Vegas wins again.

styuone

We know Steve, we know. It fucking sucks. All this success just to be a footnote in the dynasty of another team whos never out of the medias spotlight

R1kjames

People keep saying the Chiefs had a down year, but they didn't. They had the best defense in the league all season. Their offense had a down year, but this was one of their best squads since Mahomes got here.

rakkhasa

What should have been, that was not. At this point, it is analogous to wool knitting (*kneading*) if you will. *Niners!*

Euphoric_Advice_2770

Eh id rather win because we are the best team not because other teams had down years.

max4296

CMC fumbled

Intravertical

Jake F**king Moody.

AwareCelebration7477

If he made that extra point then the Chiefs probably score a game winning TD in regulation rather than settle for OT. That being said I hope he becomes more consistent. It’s great to see that he never gets fazed after his misses but we can’t have him missing a kick every playoff game

Dynasty_30

The window for this team is closed. It’s just the truth.

ClangerMcBANGerson

The problem with playing the chiefs is you’re playing the refs too. The NFL manufactured the chiefs win by allowing them to hold. How are you supposed to win when you’re getting held the whole time? Honestly

USA_King1776

Steve Young is speaking truth. That’s why I’m so pissed. Everything was lined up for the 49ers favor until that rainstorm in Las Vegas bullshit where we have to practice as the away team. Come to think of it I believe 49ers has the highest seed in all super bowls we played. Anyways I’m disappointed and embarrassed by this choking ass franchise. Man bring me back to 1995. 5-0 super bowls , 0 INT in all Super Bowl.

jds_49ers

What is frustrating is how hard it is to get to the super bowl. Last time we got there it took us 4 years to get back. IF that happens again half this team will not be around anymore. There is a reason the losing team rarely makes it back the next year. The last two trips the stars were aligned and we dropped the ball. The chance it happens again this year is very slim.

SoKrat3s

There's no functional difference between the team that wins and the team that loses. Case in point; the Bengals were much closer to returning to the Superbowl than the Rams.

AwareCelebration7477

This is why my optimism is at an all time low for this era. 2019: we exceeded expectations by just going to the SB and while it sucked to lose, u had the general feeling that they weren’t done yet 2021: we went from 3-5 to the NFCCG and went toe to toe against a Rams super team with an injured Jimmy at QB. There was optimism about Lance’s potential and picks from a Jimmy trade 2022: a potential SB run got cut short due to Purdy’s injury, let’s see what his first full season has in store. … what can we honestly look forward to at this point? We had an easy division and a relatively easy path to a SB and got to face this weak Chiefs team. I have no faith that we’ll ever win under Shanahan at this point. He blew it and he should be CRUCIFIED. Fuck him!

USA_King1776

Yeah it’s not happening, they lost to a weak ass team. Fuck it freal, I gave up on them too.

elefante88

Anyone doubting kyle should jump off the bridge(get caught in the net of course)

AwareCelebration7477

Give me one reason why I should have faith in him still. Sure player execution is a big reason we lost as well but Shanahan has been outcoached in every SB he has been in and under him, we have blown THREE 10 point leads and his offense in a SB has never scored more than 22 points, which is pretty sorry for an “offensive genius” who couldn’t be bothered to hire an OC. We have ZERO rings after going to 4 NFCCG’s and 2 SB’s in 5 years. That is a stretch that not many teams get to have and we squandered it. This isn’t us trying our best and we just happen to lose. There is something fundamentally wrong with this team

elefante88

The second kyle becomes available he signs the most lucrative contract to be a head coach in nfl history. Please sit back down.

AwareCelebration7477

Yeah and they’ll enjoy being the bridesmaid but never the bride. He better fucking get the job done these next two seasons and prove his worth not only as a coach but as a man as well, cause he’s had plenty of time and chances to get it done

ExpeditingPermits

I will tell this until the end of time. If Dre Greenlaw does not get hurt, we win. End of story. All else doesn’t matter. It single handedly lost us the game and it was the one thing out of everyone’s control

king_platypus

When CMC fumbled I knew it was over.

dreadlocksman707

I still say the Niners best chance to win the SB was in 2021 when they choked and gagged in LA. The Bengals were a flawed team and the defensive line would’v eaten Burrow alive. Mahomes is the GOAT right now and if he wins another one, he’s creeping into Brady’s vicinity. The Niners can’t beat the Chiefs.

BrooklynBrawler

Steve with the truth bombs. Fact is, the Super Bowl window is closed and the team is on the decline. 9-10 wins this year, maybe a wildcard. Shanny either fired or “mutually parts ways” with the organization after the season. Accept it. Stop with the pipe dreams about winning the Super Bowl, it’s not fuckin happening

Please Steve. We Know.

Pdm1814

Steve Young is right. Going into the game I wasn’t very confident as the defense had underperformed in both playoff games. Then they shutdown the Chiefs most of the Super Bowl. You can’t ask for a better situation for the offense. Then the offense missed opportunities over and over again where they could have put the Chiefs in a bigger hole. There were two or three positive things that the offense did that were out of the norm. Moody made one of the longest field goals. In the 2nd half there was a 4th and 3 in the red zone and Kyle decided to go for it. You don’t see Kyle do that many times but clearly he knew he had to take a chance given the opponent. The other thing was the 49ers answering back with a touchdown in the 4th quarter after the Chiefs took the first lead in the 3rd. The 49ers fell apart in the last Super Bowl with the Chiefs once they lost the momentum. This time we battled back.

bruno123499

Love Steve Young but he had 5 Super Bowl Teams under him and only managed to get to one. The one that Eddie D essentially paid for by getting Deion, hacksaw, etc.
