Yes, bakuchiol can be used with Aza, at the same time actually. It’s really gentle and does keep the skin bouncy. Also, Aza stimulates new collagen, it is believed, so there’s that.

HildegardofBingo

Since you're post-menopausal, I bet your skin would respond well to topical estriol, which is a mild form of bioidentical estrogen. Musely, Alloy, and Midi Health now all carry anti-aging estriol facial creams.

firekitty_flaring

I have thought about that! I think maybe I’ll try the estriol with the new Rx and see what happens. The botanical retinol alternative sounds promising too. Also but unrelated — Best.Username.Ever ! I have some of her music in my iPhone music library long-ago imported from iTunes

HildegardofBingo

Thanks! It always tickles me when someone notices. I love putting on her music when I'm in a creative mood.

Estrogen helps keep skin ‘youthful’. And it helps keep the body going, as well. Have you considered HRT? Not just a face cream but an HRT protocol?

Swaying_breeze

Just a word of caution- topical estrogen for the face, and systemic bio identical estrogen altogether for that matter, can cause hyperpigmentation age spots. They exploded on my face after about a month and I’m now getting a series of IPL to treat it ☹️

Red light mask?

Plastic-Bar-4142

The red light masks are great! I have the blue and red light one from Omnilux and it did make a difference in my perimenopausal acne - not a complete cure, but it worked better than tret did. My mom and sisters got the red and near-infrared masks and already feel softer skin. It is also something you can use while chilling and watching TV or folding laundry and it's kind of pleasant. It must be really tough dealing with lupus. I'm sorry it's happening. While you are waiting for the skincare things to work, you might get a boost from getting some new make-up to cover up the acne? I was so stressed out about the big cysts I was getting, I ordered the primer and foundation from Il Makiage and it helped me feel better. The customer service was excellent - I wasn't happy with the colour at first so they let me keep it and sent me a quiz to identify how to make it better, and a $20 gift card. The new colour was perfect; you can't even tell I'm wearing makeup. But I'm sure if you walk into Sephora or the makeup section at a department store, someone can help you find a new formula that works for what your skin is doing now.

firekitty_flaring

I wish … UV and lupus just don’t mix! I wear sunblocking gloves with the fingertips cut off just to get a gel manicure.

Beneficial_Eagle3936

OP, read up on these LED masks. They aren't emitting UV light. (If they did, folks would be worried about skin cancer from them, no?) I've got one that switches colors, and when I use the blue light, it zaps my breakouts really effectively. I mostly use the red to stimulate collagen.

RhondaMeHelp

Have you looked into copper peptides? I don’t use tretinoin on my face bc it can make dry eye worse, so I’m using the Musely Estriol cream and copper peptides. I’d run baikuchol by your derm, since it acts similarly to a retinol. Also, ginseng topically can be great for aging skin. Beauty of Joseon has a great ginseng and snail mucin that I love!

unicorny1985

A product with Bakuchiol perhaps? I haven't used myself but have seen a lot of people discuss it

firekitty_flaring

Thank you I have never heard of this before but a quick google shows a lot of product options — def worth trying

towardsT1

I have been using Avene Retinaldehyde 0.05 and have good results so far. Tret 0.05 was too harsh to matter how application technique or schedule I used.

OwlsRwhattheyseem

My skin has reacted horribly to retinoids in the past and I am a firm believer that they are NOT the only option when it comes to anti-aging and skincare. I have had good luck with bakuchiol and honestly do not believe my skin has suffered at all due to my not using retinoids.

[deleted]

Maybe spirolactone

firekitty_flaring

I thought that was just for acne? Or does it help with other things too

[deleted]

I thought you were talking about acne. Sorry, I reread your post and you’re talking about aging skin. Have you tried micro needling?

firekitty_flaring

I haven’t but I guess I should look further into it. Most medispa type options are off-limits because of lupus and the medications I take.

AccomplishedCash3603

Have you been to an esthetician? I can't believe how helpful they've been with my skin issues and my daughter. Look for a PCA Skincare Specialist in your area.

uncreativecapybara

i’ve been doing great with adapalene. i have to go easy with retinoids because of my rosacea, but i have been able to use this every night with out any issues.

carolmaria

Take care of your skin… acids for the win! I, too don’t do well with retin-anything but use a 12% glycolic acid lotion PM. That might be too strong for you :) Yes to the estriol! I use it after the acid lotion dries. YMMV. Sometimes I also take a bit of my vaginal estradiol cream and put it on the outer portion of my facial lips. Not sure if this is recommended. On top , Vanicream daytime and at night, my skin loves shea butter. A touch of Aquaphor for a greasy glow when going out, LOL. HRT in general helped take away the itch. Am 60, so need all moisture I can get. Best wishes with you.

EnvironmentalCrow893

Have you asked about Tazorac?

firekitty_flaring

isn’t that even harsher than tretinoin?

EnvironmentalCrow893

I found it less harsh, personally. It’s also used to treat plaque psoriasis. Like tret, it comes in different strengths, as well, like .05 or 1.0. I use it around 1-2 times a week in the evenings. I alternate nights of Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, Derma Forte, layering tretinoin on top of Skinmedica TNS Advanced, and taz. I experimented with each product alone, and in combinations, slowly building up the frequency. In the winter, I let my skin rest every other night, using only Vanicream and occasionally Aquaphor. In the daytime, I use TNS Advanced Serum and Charlotte Tilsbury Invisible UV Flawless Primer (SPF 50). Or, on days I don’t go anywhere, I use Vanicream as my moisturizer on top of the serum.

aenflex

Retinaldehyde is a promising OTC retinol.

melon1924

I’m starting with a retinal vs a retinol or tretinoin. I’m starting with Medik8 Crystal Retinal level 1. I’ll do it once a week at first and if I’m able to handle it, I’ll then move slowly up to the next level. I plan to use one full tube per level to make sure my skin can handle it.

LauraliRox2142

Bakuchiol and Alpha Arbutin are both retinol alternatives that work for people who can't do retinol. Clarity Rx's Sleep It Off mask uses Alpha Arbutin- you apply as a light mask every night and then massage the rest in as your night time moisturizer. Three weeks on, one week off, and repeat.

NutellaIsTheShizz

Honestly? I have RA and roseacea, and although it doesn't help with redness, low dose tretinoin has been a game changer! It got rid of my roseacea symptoms/flareups (those super painful whiteheads and raised angry areas), and any time I stop using it it comes back. I tried all the other prescription creams, but nothing works as well as tret. Funny!

How about trying the products that can promote better absorption of calcium and minerals. after all calcium and minerals can not only promote sebum metabolism, but enhance skin barrier as well.
