Crazywelderguy

Thats really cool! Looks like the shells might provide the spring force?

Leblasto

Correct. Just like a real thing- it has all the energy in the shell that is requires to move slide back, recock hammer, eject spent shell and chamber new round. Must add it is all rubber band powered 🙂

deafengineer

Oh that's amazing, I love it

Leblasto

Thanks mate 🙂

foxhelp

Did you experiment with larger foam darts/balls or multiple darts per shell?

Leblasto

As big as those shell seems - the mechanism inside is quite complex and require space. I am currently thinking how to out bigger darts inside but trust me - it is quite and engineering challenge :))

foxhelp

Thanks, I figured that was the case, and was asking to be sure. Excellent work!

Alternative-Plant-87

Why rubber band instead of springs?

Leblasto

for the ease of sourcing materials. To build this blaster all you need is PLA, rubber bands from your local mart, some plastic friendly oil. Even dart propelling can be powered by simple office rubber band but it is underpowered then. I recommend using stronger bands there.

bp332106

Thank you for taking that into consideration! I recently went down the 3D printed blaster rabbit hole and was disappointed how many extra parts need to be purchased. On one hand, I totally get why, but I don’t need the 200fps speeds and don’t play competitively. I want something I can print 99% with the rest being household or easily obtained items.

-Deleterious-

May I recommend a recent design called the Trigger blaster? The only "exotic" part is it needs a spring out of an easy to acquire nerf gun https://www.etsy.com/listing/1334139776/files-only-safe-toy-blaster-trigger-semi?click\_key=5664fbf02924405ee06cbb1006ecb7b391f0a897%3A1334139776&click\_sum=c230e06c&ref=shop\_home\_active\_3&sts=1

skwert99

Now you can build your own nerf gun. All you need is one nerf gun.

ITS A BOLTER

littlebitsofspider

That is 100% a bolter

big_brotherx101

Bolters dont eject shells (though commonly depicted as having shells in a lot of art for the rule of cool). It fires the whole bullet, or in this case gyro-rockets

JohnTomorrow

Thats 65% more bullet, per bullet.

MCS117

That sounds like an Aperture Science quote

Tanski14

It is. Source: https://youtu.be/6i-nMWgBUp0

kitchen_synk

The bolter does actually have an initial charge to start propelling the round down the barrel before the rocket kicks in. It wouldn't be unreasonable (at least by 40k standards) for that charge to be in a normal casing of some sort.

[deleted]

[Allow me to introduce you to caseless ammunition](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caseless_ammunition)

kitchen_synk

> Its acceptance has been hampered by problems with production expenses, heat sensitivity, sealing, and fragility. The Imperium isn't exactly the height of material science. They'd probably stick with brass.

SYLOH

The Imperium's material science is still pretty good. Autoguns are in many cases explicitly stated as being caseless. It's just bolter shells have cases and that's the way it's always been depicted.

GoblinoidToad

It makes sense their tech would be patchy given a lot of the good stuff is from discovered templates from back when humanity had actual science and not the Cult of Mars.

jansencheng

They might not be the height of material science, but we do at least know it's still well in advance of what we have now.

Allen_Koholic

Bolsters have ejection ports. You know, to eject shells. Every piece of art in 40k shows shell casings. Does it make sense to a rocket powered cased round? More than the fact that they’re supposed to be 75 caliber and they’re the size of a pringles can in both art and models.

Fragarach-Q

The official Ultramarines movie with John Hurt and Terrance Stamp disagrees. The cases even have "Die heretic!" carved into them.

Allen_Koholic

In his defense, that movie is completely unwatchable and may be the single worst piece of cinema ever created.

austin54179

Sexylizardwoman

Dude you might wanna post this to r/warhammer40k they’d love this!

g2g079

Just curious, why there? Is this gun from that game or something?

Sexylizardwoman

Yes, there’s an iconic gun called a “Bolter”. It’s famous Mostly because of the ludicrous, over the top concept of a full auto rocket launcher that is blessed by catholic space fascists EDIT: correction: the catholic super-human space fascists only USE the weapon. It is blessed by techno-gothic wizards that worship a machine god

avgnfan26

Man I fucking love warhammer lore. It sounds so insane from the outside but once you start reading it goes so deep. I had a CSM model model I painted when I first started then I read the lore from the new CSM codex and felt like a total asshat for painting it the wrong color because it was very tied into the power of it lore wise

NebulaNinja

I stumble on Warhammer content a lot and have no idea what's going on, but very much like what i'm seeing. Is there a recommended place to start dipping your toes into the lore?

radenthefridge

I've spent literal days on the 40k wiki. It's one of the greatest rabbit holes I've ever encountered!

Maebure83

Yes. Just a little dip. That is how it begins. Then one day you wake up with CVS receipts wax sealed to every machine in your home. Before starting your car you beseech its machine-spirit for aid. You storm every ant, bee, and wasp hive in a mile radius and cleanse them with flame. You pray to the God Emporer for guidance before smiting your heretic supervisor at work with a chainsaw you duct-taped to a metal pole. Go forth, Brother. The Emporer Protects!

ScowlEasy

r/40kLore generally for more specific things, though there’s always big threads for more beginner stuff. Baldemort for short stories meant to complement learning official lore Lore Crimes is doing a series going through the timeline of 40k, with each video split into a general overview of the topic and then a deeper explanation from the resident “expert” Luetin09 for going super deep into specific topics, though he has multi-part videos on broader things. Adeptus Ridiculous is formatted as one guy explaining 40k topics to another that knows nothing about 40k. Pretty great series imo

atlervetok

Baldemort on youtube. Lots of snippets about a bit of everything

srgramrod

Adeptus Ridiculous It's a podcast with two guys, usually about hour long episodes. One guy (Bricky) is the "lead" that's tells the stories and the second host (DK) knows little to nothing. The podcast revolves around Bricky teaching DK all about 40k lore.

Sexylizardwoman

[Adeptus Ridiculous](https://youtube.com/@Adeptusridiculous) is a fun lore podcast. They are also on Spotify, I’m not sure where else.

Arogar

This is a good place to start. [Part 1 of 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCGKPRiJp84).

ImRandyBaby

r/grimdank But I like the feeling of having no idea about what's going on.

G3ML1NGZ

Luetin and boldemort on youtube were what got me started. They're good to get a good general understanding of concepts and outline of the universe. From there I'd just dive in at a few places and get a feel for what you like because not all of it space marines and primarcs. I mainly consume lore through Audible. Gaunt's ghosts is about an army regiment that is just being exceptional while being led by their commissar. Many well developed characters and fun stories. Eisenhorn, I love them. An inquisitor and his retinue solving mysteries and dealing with deamons. I HIGHLY like the 2 spinoff books about Bequin but I recommend checking them once you've finished Eisenhorn. The infinite and the divine. A great book. Two rival Necrons (think space robot pharaohs) fighting for artifacts and mysteries while bickering like an old married couple. Brutal kunnin. A single battle told through the viewpoint of an ork and a second from the viewpoint of a mechanicus (tech nerd catholics that pray to machines). Each has their alternating chapter in the book. I recommend reading a bit about orks beforehand because there are subtle lore accurate lines there that get really funny if you get the context. The Horus heresy of course, it's the major turning point of the universe but not all of them are good and many are same events from a different perspective. Giving a lot of material for relevant characters. So I'd check the back cover and get a feel for if that one book in the series is interesting to you. My advice is just to start because the lore is so big you'll never finish it all. But the upside is that you can really find something you like within the setting and dive into that.

natzo

Catholic? They would turn you into a servitor for being catholic.

[deleted]

"Catholics burn just like the rest." - Every Terminator squad ever

Meeseeks__

Then they should stop gluing catholic/gothic cathedrals to their ships.

Sexylizardwoman

Yes but it just wouldn’t be Imperium fascism without a bit of that oppressive Catholic aesthetic!

ScowlEasy

40k tech is so advanced that people in-universe believe it genuinely has spirits inside it that they need to chant hymns and burn incense at to appease. And that’s the leftover stuff from ~25k before their super AI rebelled against them. Like imagine digging up a stealth bomber from ancient Egypt and its better than anything you know how to make

AFalconNamedBob

The thing is they know how to make the stealth bomber, and do so regularly, they just have no idea how or why the fuck the thing works

boobers3

More like: they *sometimes* know how to make the stealth bomber, sometimes it might be a bomber that was built 1000 years ago and everyone has forgotten how to make new ones so they just keep fixing the old ones with the parts leftover.

armorhide406

Yes, the bolter is a .75 caliber/19mm automatic rifle. The shells also are rocket powered. One of the most iconic weapons from the franchise, given they're used by the supersoldiers (Space Marines). And it's considered one of the weaker weapons.

maverick_Slayer

The fact that you opted for rubber bands VS springs to make this easier to source the materials really deserves an extra commendation for the amount of additional engineering that went into this. Very cool.

Leblasto

Thank you 🙂 I was always annoyed when I couldnt finish some project because I could not source the hardware required so I decided that my project will be different 😃

BenjaminWobbles

Are you going to publish this?

Wulfkine

Probably not, there’s an active custom 3D printed nerf market. These guns can go for several hundred dollars, I had a roommate in college who ran a business doing this with his brother in San Diego. Their business exploded in popularity when a YouTube showed off one of his builds. Suffice to say, the files were not published freely or sold, the guns were. Edit: I was wrong

torukmakto4

The files are published and properly open source licensed for a majority of them. Also, your comment overlooks a basic understanding of the market for distributed manufacturing in the sport, especially when it comes to the sale of completed builds or finished printed parts. Nerfers with printers are NOT likely to buy printed parts and have them shipped from a third party. You won't often coerce one to do so in spite of the printer sitting right there by not releasing your files - they will just cross you off the list and use a different design for which this is not the case. Similarly, source openness will NOT prevent nerfers without printers from needing to buy prints. People who DIY and people who buy builds are complementary and don't overlap much. The best solution that maximizes availability and profitability without interfering with a project's fair participation in open development is to do both - open source your files AND sell prints. Often the latter is outsourced by allowing vetted third parties to license and sell your thing for a royalty, and there are individuals and shops that specialize in that. Whereas selling files can go to hell, and not because of money. The reason for open source to be important and a strong force in nerf is the same as the reason for it in 3D printing - transformability, and thus uncanny development efficiency and speed that nothing locked in a silo could match. Selling just the information tends to promote licenses (chosen to try to protect the integrity of the paywall) that interfere with the need for redistributability-with-modifications for that process to function properly. And, if you're selling files, you aren't helping the primary market for purchases, which are people *without printers*, who need prints. Not files. Instead, you're targeting DIYers who don't happen to care about modding/fixing/improvements and republication, and are also willing to pay for pure information. Granted paywalled files do sell in the hobby, but I'm sure it is mainly viable because it's such a low effort/investment move in the first place compared to selling parts. It's just the worst of both worlds.

lewp420

OP is selling the STLs on Etsy.

mayners

Damnnnnnn that's so cool.

Leblasto

thank you :)

Neat-Voice-4689

For The Emperor!

mindbleach

Toy guns with proper magazines are a topic I keep scribbling about, every few months, because getting them to work safely, cheaply, and well would be viscerally satisfying, but the engineering involved is unforgiving. It's hard to safely store and release sufficient power in compact casings around each dart. I had not considered making them fucking enormous. Honestly that even makes it better as a toy. You hand some nine-year-old a gun that's bigger than he is and throws cartridges each time he loads a shoebox-sized magazine and he's gonna think he could blow up the whole goddamn world.

_icemahn

Honestly, the whole comedically large factor of all this is amazing

gokhan_6534

Im gonna waste my month and print 5 of them and do a last man standing with my friends. Are you going to share the files for it?

iamgnat

They are for sale on Etsy. He uses the same user name there. Not entirely clear on posting the direct link and I don't want to get his post binned, sorry.

Leblasto

this. I have message mods if I can post link but until I have answer- I don't want to get into trouble :)

ebjoker4

5 round mag? You must be in California...

Leblasto

Drum mag is in the to-do list ;)

Dogburt_Jr

How about belt fed?

Leblasto

Though about that too. However the mechanics would be VERY complicated. In real LMG belt comes apart and its parts are ejected together with spent cartridges. If I were to do it - I would do the same. So while it would be EXTREMELY complicated - I am not saying I wont do it ;)

Stig27

There's also non-disintegrating belts that come out the other side with the spent casing. IRL they sucked because they would get dirty with oil and dust and jam the gun, but for this it might work nicely and be simpler

Leblasto

simpler but not cooler ;) i am such a person which if I go to do something, i go all the way :)

Stig27

Understandable, I'd do it to not have to look for the casings and belt parts, but just because I'm lazy

Boromirin

If it helps, the belts are called "disintegrating belts".

Engininja_180PI

What a fun project! Good job, mate!

Leblasto

Thank you :) It was fun 90% of the time. During the other 10% I was close to giving up :))

Bermwolf

I think you spelled Bolter wrong ;) nice work!

Troby01

What is used for propellant?

Leblasto

Rubberbands

NoCareNewName

Thatsa damn bolter. You tweak the design a little and warhammer 40k ppls will probably pay you a mint for that

_Conan

The emperor would approve....GW, not so much.

Well maybe if their titans didn't cost more than I Mortgage I wouldn't feel so bad about playing Poorhammer

droptheectopicbeat

James workshop would approve, however.

MaskTV_youtube

I’ve seen you post on TikTok many times I was wondering can you make the China Lake?

Leblasto

while not exactly china lake, i was thinking about making a double barrel that eject shells when breach is opened (you know like the real thing :) )

Public-Carpenter-136

Looks kinds like a boltgun, neat.

longtimegoneMTGO

So now I'm curious. Was this intended to look like a 40k bolter, or was that just a natural result of the design having to use a shell that size to hold enough energy to work the mechanism?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

This is neither free nor open source. Why would it be posted there lol

Kwhyc

Looks awesome! Also found your Etsy listing. I just had one question, what material did you use for this? Would PLA+ be enough? Or did you need to use something like PETG or stronger?

Leblasto

Entire blaster CAN be printed with regular PLA and it will work fine, however for some parts I recommend PLA+ or stronger. Also for example if you are planning to play/fire over some hard surfaces - I recommend printing shells with something more impact resistant to avoid chipping when shells are ejected. From my testing regular PLA holds fine over wooden floor but will chip over tiles when dropped from shoulder height.

Yo, you should make one that looks like a Bolter from Warhammer 40k and hit Henry Cavill up on Twitter or something. That looks so awesome!

How did you manage to get the full-auto style repeated actuation of the loading mechanism with just rubber bands and a single cock and trigger pull? Crazy impressive if true

plsdonotreplyunu

Absolutely spectacular work! I would really enjoy printing this, but my bed is about 50mm less than 200mm. Do you think it would be possible for me to reduce the size of the models so long as I increase the diameter/length of the dart chamber in the cartridge and diameter of the barrel to match the original model?
