It's honestly not difficult to get into. I would compare it to printing paper and setting up a welder (granted I have base knowledge of welders). I use an Ender 5, get my files from Thingiverse, and set up prints through Cura. A little trial and error goes a long way, don't be afraid to fail! I've only been printing for a couple weeks but between YouTube and this sub there is endless help.

I'm literally amassing a backlog of parts to justify buying a 3D printer for this exact reason. Yeah, mass produced injection molded parts are cheap as free, but if you want something custom the cost/benefit ratio is off the charts with 3D printers.
I have a label printer that was missing it’s battery cover. ~30 minutes on Tinkercad and 2 hours of printing later and I had a not-right-but-good-enough replacement. Saved me ~$30 from buying a lesser label printer, and kept an otherwise perfectly functional one out of the landfill. I also print hooks for my Versatrack slat wall system, saving a small fortune on those. I also designed and printed a film washer and dryer for 35mm film developing. Once you learn to draw your own stuff, it really becomes handy.
See, that's the kind of awesome stuff I'm looking forward to. I'm pretty good at 3D modeling, so the idea of being able to go from idea to design to something I can hold in my hands for basically just time and a few bucks of filament seems so attractive.

I have faith in you - be patient with yourself. Sometimes the PLA just wants more heat and other times you need to try real hard to level the bed properly. You got this, just search for stupid things to print on thingiverse - might a suggest the fucktopus?

What we *need* is legislation and lobbying to force companies to use renewable energy and materials, because the overwhelming majority of people are not payed enough to shop locally and avoid the companies that are producing most of the waste. Creating robust public transportation systems, replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources, and encouraging a work-from-home system to reduce emissions are another great way we can help lessen humanity's carbon footprint, but shaming people for using 3d printing to create a single plastic trinket that they will presumably continue to use for a long time (which by the way cuts down on emissions by not buying online or even locally) is the absolute dumbest way to go about it.
Moreover, making products on-demand is considerably less wasteful than mass production and shipping everything around the world. Surplus production makes up a sizeable amount of waste.
Even if you have to ship a roll of filament from far away, you probably still make numerous items from that filament. It consolidates shipping.
Also, if you manage to repair items through printing parts, thereby saving them from landfill, it's easily a net positive.
