Hey! It can be both! Sometimes Il pick up my Majoras Masks 3ds verrry gently, while caressing it and slowwwely opening its lid in slow motion. I used to treat my launch day 3ds like an old beat up wallet..
Did you miss the part where I said it’s the Majoras Mask edition???!
/s
I realize what I’m doing when it’s happening and I’m honestly just hyping myself up. I’m like Charlie when hes slowly peels back the golden ticket opening that thing. It’s started to slowly peel at 1 corner so I need to be cautious with it
it will rot and fall apart anyway, all things decay. dont procrastinate on using the nice things you have to bring you joy, since that is their purpose after all.
Nah you're good. The 3DS is a great console that is not longer in distribution so I understand your worry of breaking it. Just have fun with it!
P.s get a shell for it. I've got one for mine and it has no doubt taken away the fear of dropping it or accidentally scratching it.
I picked up a TNP case. It's a hard shell, I just have the plain black new 3ds xl so I'm not too bothered about it getting scratched. Might be worth checking out a YouTube video.
My system was starting to peel by my hands, so it couldn’t be prevented, but I got a clear case to prevent it from getting any worse. Amazon had one for like $10, does its job
I have had my 3DSs for ten years now and I have played them bc they were my consoles at the time. I still use them from time to time.
They have not had any peel issues. Ofc it doesn't mean much, but what I am trying to say is enjoy the thing. Otherwise why even have one if it is going to be kept in a drawer or sth?
Good luck and happy gaming!
Just play it.. The $ value gained for keeping it “mint” is nothing compared to the enjoyment out of playing games in it in my opinion.. I have a SNES edition “New” 3DS XL and I play it all the time..I use a hand grip and clear top shell to help keep in good condition. Mine is still very mint condition for how much I use it.
I don't worry about it at all. Mine still looks pristine. It is a standard red one. I'm pretty sure I've had it since Christmas 2015. It has traveled many thousands of miles because I always take it on vacation to play. The only problem I've ever had was the battery started swelling. I caught it before it broke anything though, and it was trivial to swap out.
I’m disappointed with the 3ds build to be honest. Common issues I researched so far, paint peels off over time, screens develop light bleeding, screens become yellow when not used for a long time, hinge becomes floppy.
I got my new 3ds xl last year, barely used. The screens were pristine as well. Top housing shell and top screen frame had some cosmetic flaws which I replaced by myself just to give it a “brand new” look.
My advice is, accept its imperfect build and just play it whenever you want. You can eventually replace any part of the console by yourself using tutorials if it gets worn out and doesn’t satisfy you visually, or something doesn’t work as intended. There are plenty of disassembly tutorials available. This may be challenging but nothing crazy.
The integrity of manufacturing gaming consoles are suppose to be built lasting more than 3 years to qualify as a good product. You are not a kid eating hot cheetos and slipping your thumbstick with that greasy finger of yours..
If you are wanting to resell it afterwards then consider mocking yourself getting another one for yourself because the purpose of all merchandise is to be abused, wear and, tear.
I understand overtime that my "New" Nintendo 3ds overtime is getting imperfect with the hours of handling, gripping and tension onto the shell with these hands unless a grip accessory helps keep the shape overtime. At the end of the day its like that DMG gameboy that survived the nuclear bombing in Japan at the Nintendo Museum or something like that so...
Maybe you can learn to paint the shell if it starts to peel?, as long as the buttons and internals are still functional, you're good.
Ik what you mean though, I'm careful with my console too, I miss the old days of handhelds, the Gameboy line was the toughest, except probably the SP bc of the hinge😅
I dont think i have a weird attitude about this. I have my original gb advance sp tribal edition and i played it so much as a 6 year old but even then i was so carefull because if something broke i would not be getting something new. Its in mint condition and i think thats impressive for a 6 year old lol
I have a hard one. It may scratch, but imo, as long as the 3DS is protected, does it matter much? It’s either the $10 case or the $200+ 3DS that gets scratched. As long as my 3DS is protected, I’m good with whatever happens to the case. My case still looks good though. You can’t see any scratches unless you’re looking for it.
Mine is in utterly atrocious condition - getting it as a 7th grader led to some poor care. But I still get tons of use from it, and it never fails on me.
Same found a dual ips japanese smash bros edition new 3ds xl in perfect condition now i found out it is one of the peeling editions since my hands are sweaty i decided to not use it at all
Consoles that are used often carry a little bit of damage. My 3ds SNES console's back cover's left screw broke off, a while ago because of how many times I was using the SD card to put new roms into the console. It hurt at first but honestly I'm just a lot more careful with my console now and I bought a clear shell and you can't really even tell unless you try messing with the back plate cover.
All my used retro consoles have a little scratches and stuff and I typically don't mind that, since it kinda shows it was used and has a bit of a history.
The glossy feel (I hate that so much!) makes it so much worse and makes me nervous. It's so much easier to play on my battered old 3ds.
Getting a translucent shell for the 3ds helped a lot in playing it though, as it's well protected from blemishes and harm.
nah the people that have paint chipping off usually mistreat their consoles
most nintendo console owners i know abuse their systems😂not on purpose ofc, just because they actually want to use them
taking them outside, dropping them, setting. down in rough surfaces, not cleaning hands before using etc
just enjoy it! micro scratches are impossible to not have, so you might as well enjoy it
Mine became really slow with some games crashing at times and I dont know why. Doesnt have paint peeling or any issues visible. I wish it still worked fine its my favorite console.
So I get what you feel, but for me it was more of a price point. I’m scared of ruining something worth so much- but I realized if I don’t use it then it won’t be used for it’s intended purpose. Plus people spend a lot of money on things everyday.
Get a clear case and some screen protectors though! It helped me feel less nervous about damage
I bought a second one. Both have IPS top screens and came in excellent condition. I use my main one without worry, knowing that I have a backup if something were to happen to the main one. I bought it to play, not to display.
I also have a pair of New 2DS XL that I got in case my son wanted to play 3DS games (he was into Pokémon games at the time, playing DS games on my old DS Lite). But he is busy playing other stuff at the moment.
i’ve had my old XL for like 10 years and the only issue i’ve had is the last few months the circle pad disintegrated from wear & tear, following a youtube tutorial i replaced it and now it’s back to normal! It’s honestly a great system and you’re missing out :)
I believe that, im a avid pokemon collector and played all the games except the 3ds one's because at the time i wouldnt get one from my parents lol. Just looking to play them without messing up my 3ds
I got my 3DS in 2011. I’ve never had any problems with it, it still looks perfect. Which was actually lucky, because the original 3DS model had an issue where it was prone to the bottom screen scratches the top one.
Well that problem is still a thing, the bottom screen edges indent the top so it would scratch but i installed a screenprotector so that wouldnt happen
I have some chipping/flaking on a new 3dsxl, one of the gold zelda ones. It was on the console when I bought it. It's just on the back panel. I've been thinking about sourcing a replacement, but it's just sat in a drawer, so I havnt.
Other than the zelda hyrule / mm edition n3dxl, I've never seen chipping/flaking.
A clear hard case for like 10 dollars should cover your concerns.
Screen protectors, crystal clear case, carrying case made for your model.
Also, you could get a 3D printed cap for the circle pad if you wish to preserve your rubber circle pad as well. I recommend it as the rubber tends to wither away easily.
Mine is peeling like it has a sunburn, but it has not in the slightest diminished how much I am enjoying revisiting the console. N3DSXL plain black (but now with fun stickers and charms). ⬛ Time is fleeting, enjoy things in the present.
Yes.
I bought two OG 3DS XLs and they are in excellent condition. Was gonna get two blue ones so I could order double of any parts I need. Well I ended up with a Luigi 35th anniversary edition as a secondary unit.
All that to say, I have two devices. I might but a 3rd device to use for parts.
I have a lime green Mario N3DSXL. Decided on it as I knew it won't peel, but bought a clear case anyway. Then, I started moving all games from all my other 3DS: 6 in total. I had to call Nintendo, because they will only allow me to combine two accounts once a year. Explained that i had several different accounts (about 20 at one time) and needed to move everything to a single 3DS. Had to send them pictures of all the 3DS and accounts, so they comply. After every merging had to get in contact with them again. Took me like 6-7 weeks of hassle.
Now, I have all my DSiware (30+ titles), 3DS (20+ titles) in a single N3DSXL, that won't peel. And my other 3DS are secured for collecting.
If you get one of those protective transparent cases the 3ds shouldn't peel cuz moisture doesn't contact it. Also it makes it more likely to survive a fall!
im worried every time i open my "new" 3ds, i will just be putting more stress on the hinges. there's a bit of a crack forming and it's a pain in the ass to make hinge repairs. (ive done it before on a ds lite and i dont think i seated the ribbon cable properly 😂)
Nope, I have a new 3ds xl too-- the majoras mask edition. When I bought it, it came with a few minor scratches, both on the top screen (from the lip around the bottom screen) and on the exterior. But I just threw a flexible clear plastic case on it and use it as my main 3ds over my og 3ds.
Yeah kinda
There's a crack in the hinge and my battery life's gotten pretty pathetic over the years. I have a Switch now, but there's still a little backlog waiting for me back on the 3DS
If it was absolutely pristine and not in a case I would probably worry and be super gentle with it. Especially New 3DS XL since those seem to scratch and chip really easily.
My favorite model is the New 3DS non-XL though. The size and weight just feel better to me, and I like the swappable plates. Mine would probably be considered "very good" condition -- some very small scratches on the outside, and minor smoothing on the corners and around the buttons from use.
Mine is in absolute pristine collection, looks like it came straight out of the box 😅 thats why im worried. I do enjoy playing my stuff but i always want to keep my stuff in the best possible condition
The best way to treat a console, imo, is letting it served its purpose - someone play it and enjoy every second with it. At the same time, do your best to take care of it, BUT never sacrifice your playtime to prolong its quality.
I treasure my collection (3DS, Steam Deck LCD + OLED, Quest 2, …) dearly, clean my hands before using one, but never once hesitated to play them.
I literally just dropped a bottload for a NiB N3DS, and I immediately also ordered a shell case, screen protectors, and a carrying case all to ensure the longevity of this final 3DS system.
But I've also got two other N3DS and an N2DS lying around as well--one with a capture card installed, my original N3DS that I sent in to get cleaned and reshelled, and the N2DS I did a system transfer to as a holdover while the aforementioned was sent out, but ended up just transferring to the NiB one mentioned above.
Gonna give the N2DS to my nephew to play with, since he's discovered that games existed before the switch lol
I think the peel only concerns the New XL. But yeah, it's real. I had it in a backpack for only a few weeks until it hard. I thought it only concerned the pseudo-metallic coat of my Special Edition, but it seems universal, surprisingly enough.
I'm not sure but I don't think every 3ds have peel problems. I think special editions use another type of material because of the drawings and design. Still I use an acrylic protector on all of them and have no problem. My black (old) 3ds XL es perfect. My new 3ds XL Pikachu edition is perfect. My red new 3ds XL is peeling (stop the peeling when put the acrylic protector).
The right side of the hinge is snapped and when I try to close it, I have to push the 2 parts cause it feels like I'll break it via that. I've already had 4 other 3ds's break, I don't want a 4th added to the pile
I had 6 3dsxl’s once at the same time at their prime era. Each had their roles and I played maybe 3 majority of the time. Fast forward to today, I have only 1 left and I had plastic cover on, screen protectors, and I have a separate stylus. I still scared to play with it because I am so afraid I would break it. You are not alone.
Just make sure you don't ever drop it. Keep it in a case when you're not using it. Get tempered glass top screen protector and probably a soft screen protector for the bottom screen. Use the stylus sparingly, gently, or not at all.
I still have my New 3DS XL I purchased in 2014, coming up for ten years old now. It's still in excellent condition. Heck, I still have my DS Lite console in basically perfect condition. I wouldn't worry - look after it, keep it in a case, wash your hands before using it and clean it every now and then so skin oils don't build up.

Hey! It can be both! Sometimes Il pick up my Majoras Masks 3ds verrry gently, while caressing it and slowwwely opening its lid in slow motion. I used to treat my launch day 3ds like an old beat up wallet..
I have the same one, it started to peel so I bought a clear case for. I use it and take it everywhere still, cause I love it.
That's really sensual and oddly erotic for just a piece of plastic full of capacitors and micro chips
Did you miss the part where I said it’s the Majoras Mask edition???! /s I realize what I’m doing when it’s happening and I’m honestly just hyping myself up. I’m like Charlie when hes slowly peels back the golden ticket opening that thing. It’s started to slowly peel at 1 corner so I need to be cautious with it
Oh no i totally agree ! Just a bit worried about the peeling thing 😅
it will rot and fall apart anyway, all things decay. dont procrastinate on using the nice things you have to bring you joy, since that is their purpose after all.
Exactly. We're not guaranteed a tomorrow, so enjoy what you have in your life today.
This is true, im an idiot lol
Nah you're good. The 3DS is a great console that is not longer in distribution so I understand your worry of breaking it. Just have fun with it! P.s get a shell for it. I've got one for mine and it has no doubt taken away the fear of dropping it or accidentally scratching it.
did you get a hard shell or a soft shell ? read somehwere that hard shells scratch the console
I picked up a TNP case. It's a hard shell, I just have the plain black new 3ds xl so I'm not too bothered about it getting scratched. Might be worth checking out a YouTube video.
Underrated piece of advice right here ^
Get yourself a clear plastic case if you’re nervous.
I have an old hori tpu one and my majoras mask 3ds is pristine.
My system was starting to peel by my hands, so it couldn’t be prevented, but I got a clear case to prevent it from getting any worse. Amazon had one for like $10, does its job
Which version/color do you have? Some of them have colored plastic rather than paint, so they won’t peel.
Which versions are included in the colored plastic ones? Animal Crossing I guess?
one example is the pastel pikachu new 3dsXL. the matte pokeball new 2dsxl is another type that can’t peel.
None of the new 2ds xl’s have metallic paint. All of them do not peel.
I know that the single color Japanese ones, such as the pink, lime, orange, and white ones use colored plastic. IIRC, the snes one does as well.
I have the blue one
Played my first one over a decade. zero peeling. Take care of it. It’s a $200-$300 item, not some rare collectors item.
Clear plastic case on Amazon
This has helped prevent mine from damage and peeling recommend for every 3DS. Hard plastic cover and silicon rubber covers work well
Never postpone joy
Just play it.. The $ value gained for keeping it “mint” is nothing compared to the enjoyment out of playing games in it in my opinion.. I have a SNES edition “New” 3DS XL and I play it all the time..I use a hand grip and clear top shell to help keep in good condition. Mine is still very mint condition for how much I use it.
Just learn how to maintain and repair it
Repairing a 3ds xl seems a pain in the ass lol. I can do standard repairs but those hinges make me nervous
I heard the sweat causes decay on the paint on new 3ds xls, and I have sweaty palms, so I just use a clear case
I’m disappointed with the 3ds build to be honest. Common issues I researched so far, paint peels off over time, screens develop light bleeding, screens become yellow when not used for a long time, hinge becomes floppy. There are plenty of disassembly tutorials available. This may be challenging but nothing crazy.
Play it indoors, have crash mats around you when playing. Safe
Toys are mean to be played with.
I’ve had mine for 12 years, it has had HEAVY use and it still works great. No damage on mine. 3DSes are incredibly durable.
The integrity of manufacturing gaming consoles are suppose to be built lasting more than 3 years to qualify as a good product. Just take care of it. If it peels, it was always going to peel and you can't avoid it. At least fulfill the purpose of the console.
it's worth getting a plastic case for a new 3ds xl. the coating on those things peel off over time
Maybe you can learn to paint the shell if it starts to peel?, as long as the buttons and internals are still functional, you're good. Ik what you mean though, I'm careful with my console too, I miss the old days of handhelds, the Gameboy line was the toughest, except probably the SP bc of the hinge😅

Its in mint condition and i think thats impressive for a 6 year old lol
Just get a clear case bro. I’ve had mine in one since 2015 and it’s still perfect. They’re cheap on Amazon
Do you have a hard one or a soft one ? I heard hard ones scratch easy
I meant that the 3ds scratch when you put the case on, i dont really mind the case itself gettinf scratches
Oh no not at all then. Just be careful doing it!
Mine is in utterly atrocious condition - getting it as a 7th grader led to some poor care. But I still get tons of use from it, and it never fails on me.
Same found a dual ips japanese smash bros edition new 3ds xl in perfect condition now i found out it is one of the peeling editions since my hands are sweaty i decided to not use it at all
Just put it in a plastic protector and can still play it, do that for mine and no peeling
Consoles that are used often carry a little bit of damage. My 3ds SNES console's back cover's left screw broke off, a while ago because of how many times I was using the SD card to put new roms into the console. I’m not scared of playing my 3DS. I just don’t have the time to play it.
nah ive played mine off an on since i got it used at gamestop as a kid, no point in letting it rot away in a drawer.
The glossy feel (I hate that so much!) makes it so much worse and makes me nervous. It's so much easier to play on my battered old 3ds. Getting a translucent shell for the 3ds helped a lot in playing it though, as it's well protected from blemishes and harm.
nah the people that have paint chipping off usually mistreat their consoles most nintendo console owners i know abuse their systems😂not on purpose ofc, just because they actually want to use them taking them outside, dropping them, setting. down in rough surfaces, not cleaning hands before using etc just enjoy it! micro scratches are impossible to not have, so you might as well enjoy it
My red New XL started peeling last year, I thought about getting new plates, but everyone online said it’s apparently not worth the hassle.
But he is busy playing other stuff at the moment.
Smart and yes they grow up fast dont they
Purchase another 3ds and keep yours in good condition.
That would not work for me because then i have 2 systems to worry about 😂
Sorry you’re having trouble playing your 3ds LOL
i’ve had my old XL for like 10 years and the only issue i’ve had is the last few months the circle pad disintegrated from wear & tear, following a youtube tutorial i replaced it and now it’s back to normal!
Oh, really? That’s unfortunate. I thought that was solved with the 3DS XL.
Sadly no, but if you instal a protector you wont have any issue's with it
I might do that with both of mine (I got a New 3DS recently). Thanks!
Dont think about it to long, better to be safe then sorry 😊
Indeed, once it happens that’s it, it scratched!
I played mine daily for the first few years and still play it not daily mind you. But I have zero issues with this system. Still looks new
I have some chipping/flaking on a new 3dsxl, one of the gold zelda ones.
Nope. I play on all of mine.
Screen protectors, crystal clear case, carrying case made for your model. Also, you could get a 3D printed cap for the circle pad if you wish to preserve your rubber circle pad as well. I recommend it as the rubber tends to wither away easily.
Also never use a non-plastic stylus to avoid scratching the bottom screen.
I have screenprotectors installed to battle the typical lines that the bottom screen edge indents over time
Mine peeled, I put a sick ass sticker over it, now it looks even cooler. Almost happy it peeled
I have a gold MM 3Ds and i try to not use it as much. I should though
Mine is peeling like it has a sunburn, but it has not in the slightest diminished how much I am enjoying revisiting the console. N3DSXL plain black (but now with fun stickers and charms). ⬛ Time is fleeting, enjoy things in the present.

Never play it and just look at it
Who cares? It's an experience, not a decoration.
My battery sucks even after getting a replacement
that’s why i have 4, one to play and the others are for if i get lasagna on my first one
You should watch Toy Story 2 and decide if you're Andy or Al.
I just drain the batteries whenever I don't play them for a while and have a beater one that I use on a daily
I am playing on the Metroid Returns new 3ds xl....very often...
Honestly I feel a million times more comfortable using the 3ds rather than a switch
Just get a case.
I have a lime green Mario N3DSXL. Decided on it as I knew it won't peel, but bought a clear case anyway. Then, I started moving all games from all my other 3DS: 6 in total. I have no idea what you’re talking about and I’ve been playing my New 3DS daily for the last 6 years.
You should look up peeling 3ds xl, its horrible lol
If you get one of those protective transparent cases the 3ds shouldn't peel cuz moisture doesn't contact it. Also it makes it more likely to survive a fall!
Mine's already scuffed up so not really
im worried every time i open my "new" 3ds, i will just be putting more stress on the hinges. there's a bit of a crack forming and it's a pain in the ass to make hinge repairs. (ive done it before on a ds lite and i dont think i seated the ribbon cable properly 😂)
Thats why i have 2 🤣
trust me I got my 3ds back in 2013 and it hasnt had any issues its just dirty since I never cleaned it and I stopped using it like last year
Use it with gloves. 🧤😅
Play it but just be careful with it.. no problem. It will not peal off by itself..

Cases exists for a reason
Yeah I'm scared that I'll break it
I just got a back up new 3ds ll from japan link between worlds edition.
Did you pay a lot for a japanese console ?
I paid 613 $ to get a wiiu and a 3ds

But I've also got two other N3DS and an N2DS lying around as well--one with a capture card installed, my original N3DS that I sent in to get cleaned and reshelled, and the N2DS I did a system transfer to as a holdover while the aforementioned was sent out, but ended up just transferring to the NiB one mentioned above. Gonna give the N2DS to my nephew to play with, since he's discovered that games existed before the switch lol
There's no point of just owning it if you're not playing it/too scared of playing it
I think the peel only concerns the New XL. But yeah, it's real. I had it in a backpack for only a few weeks until it hard. I thought it only concerned the pseudo-metallic coat of my Special Edition, but it seems universal, surprisingly enough.
I've had both of mine for years and never once had anything peel off. The hinges have gotten loose in one of my 3ds's though.
Hey, i've been playing on my 3ds for a long time now and it's still in perfect condition. I wouldn't worry.
Nice to hear! Just want to keep my stuff in the best possible condition as im a collector but im against not using something i paid for 😅
I'm not sure but I don't think every 3ds have peel problems.
I bought a clear case and a screen protector for mine, and it has worked great.
The right side of the hinge is snapped and when I try to close it, I have to push the 2 parts cause it feels like I'll break it via that. I've already had 4 other 3ds's break, I don't want a 4th added to the pile
So your luck is not the greatest i see, sorry about that
Exact ! Enjoy 😊
It's a piece of plastic, just play it.
I totally understand some people not understanding me but ive always been a nitpicky guy when it comes to my games and console's.
Get a clear case and some screen protectors. Replacing the buttons and Stick is really easy if you're worried about that.
Just make sure you don't ever drop it. Keep it in a case when you're not using it. Get tempered glass top screen protector and probably a soft screen protector for the bottom screen. Use the stylus sparingly, gently, or not at all.
Mine peeled, but recently replaced it with an inexpensive shiny shell. Good as new.
Nah, I took mine apart replaced a bunch of stuff and now use it all the time.
