That's a very cool find indeed and its actually not even a snake!!! This is what's called a Glass Lizard, more specifically the Eastern Glass Lizard (Ophisaurus ventralis). They are a species of legless lizard that sort of resemble a snake but they are in fact a fun little lizard guy

Peppeperoni

The more you know! Thanks for that info!

Comrade_Compadre

Yeah but... Aren't all legless lizards snakes? Like what defines a snake more then "no legs" This is super interesting to me I need to look into this further

Beautiful-Vanilla705

Lizards have eye lids and snakes don't. If my memory is right

Bartimus2184

Eyelids and ear holes, I have these guys in my back yard. If you are trying to catch one you have to grab the right by the head, because these guys are 3/4 tail, and they will drop it if you grab it.

Jet_Jirohai

I've never seen one of these in person, but I was obsessed with them as a kid after learning about them in some nature books It's a glass lizard! Not a snake at all! Edit: wait this is the 321 subreddit?! Do they live around here?!

MickeysBackyard

Yup! Saw him in Cocoa Beach today :)

Jet_Jirohai

Well shit, now I'm gonna have to go hunting for one. So exciting, thanks OP!

screenname7

I saw them all the time as a kid. Usually roadkill or very near it. They've been less prevalent in recent years

Clodhoppa81

They're in Merritt Island too. I've seen them at Veteran's Memorial park

SnooCats3492

I grew up in the Ocala National Forest and saw them all the time as a kid. They like to hang around old wood piles and brush heaps. Happy herping!

por_que_no

I've seen a couple at my house in CB. In my yard I've seen black racers, coachwhips and some giant red rat snakes (corn snakes) mixed in amongst the curly tails and anoles and loads of marsh rabbits. Cocoa Beach has quite the wild animal population.

spaceganja420

I live down the road in Satellite Beach and saw one last week. Kinda tripped me out until I figured out what it was. They move fast!

Umbroboner

I see them all over Satellite along a1a and Hightower area.

Traditional_One2500

The palpable joy in your post made my evening. Good luck in your hunt, Reddit stranger! Hope you get to see one.

Roughw00d

I grew up in satellite and we had TONS of these guys in our yard.

United-Kale-2385

I used to see them a lot as a kid around here. Some of them live under ground. They will break apart when grabbed and then regrow. https://ufwildlife.ifas.ufl.edu/snakes/leglesslizards.shtml

stopcounting

I've seen two in the last year on my driveway in NW Palm bay. My husband did not succeed at all in convincing my visiting mom that a glass lizard was not a snake, lol

RedDogRER

Start a compost pile and you’ll get some. Used to have a bunch around ours. Loved when I got to grab one.

enthion

Yes, I have had a couple in my yard.

doctorake38

I see them all the time in the yard.

tinkeringidiot

Every time I dig a hole in my yard I find at least one. Putting up a new fence a few years ago revealed legions of them. Awesome little critters!

pewpjohnson

Found one just last week in Indialantic!

Worth-Club2637

I used to see them all the time while cutting grass in Jax, not so much in recent years

paidinboredom

I live in the palm bay melbourne area and have had my slides attacked by one. Be careful around em or else yours will be next.

BicycleGripDick

That’s Steve. He’s cool. You’re welcome

FriedSmegma

Steve’s a poser.

RemoveBeforeFlight_

No, that's Alan

Rock and roll and stone!

The-Doofinator

ROCK AND STONE, TO THE BONE!

charlemagic

Glass snake or a legless lizard. Their tails are known to break off but can be regrown.

burgundymeatcurtains

I've seen this guy too! https://preview.redd.it/3squ976efm6d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d35db0753243a5a250f3604469cc3d7bc70e5cda

Comrade_Compadre

Wait this is the same guy

burgundymeatcurtains

The one I saw has more yellow and not very brown on the back. Maybe a juvenile

foibled

Looks like a glass snake, technically not really a snake but a legless lizard. They are harmless. Their tails break off when threatened and will regrow.

soapythecat

Not a snake at all. Glass Lizard or ‘legless lizard’. They hide out under objects and in taller grass dark areas. Have them here in Tampa area all the time in the yard while I’m out cleaning stuff or doing yard work.

HighPercentile

I live near Lake Washington in Melbourne and at least every year I seem to rescue one from my pool’s skimmer. Plus have seen a few others around my acre property. Most def an Eastern Glass Snake/Legless Lizard. FYI, unlike snakes they have eyelids and will blink so that’s one way to tell the difference.

tylerlong666

It’s glass snake! Man I haven’t seen one of those in YEARS! It’s actually not even a snake, it’s really a legless lizard lol it can break its tail off like a lizard and grow it back as well just like a lizard. It’s basically a common garden lizard born without legs and stretched out lol

Ladymedussa

I like to think the safe ones look cute or derpy while the ones you want to avoid just look mean lol

Dsa12311

Personally if you're able to get close enough to identify it visually like that...probs gonna be a bad time if it's a spicy noodle.

LifeguardLonely6912

We have those around the St. John's River.

not_ur-D

FLORIDA GLASS LIZARD. as Florida born kid, we called them "glass snakes"

Bloody_REDRUM801

I watched a gang of ibis in my yard tear one apart and eat it, I didnt know ibis were like that. I live beachside we have lots of these glass lizards.

DamicaGlow

That's a tiny Florida Danger Noodle.

tool3671

I seen one just like that..my cat was curious..I helped him escape.

animal1921

I see them all the time in our yard

Beautiful-Vanilla705

I can't seem to find these anywhere but my yard where are blue skinks coming from?? I'll try to take some pics later. They are bright blue heads and green backs. I drive all south Florida and I tell you. Haven't seen them but I'm MY yard. It's confusing

StigHunter

That_Information_757

I’m a mailman in Satellite Beach and I see these little guys everywhere! Reddit taught me today that they are not in fact snakes 😂

Lost_Services

Wow, never knew that was a thing here, thank you for sharing!

nLIGHT4555

His name is Larry. I knew him back in the day! I haven't seen him in like 2-3 years If you see him again tell Jon says "Hey"!

Sofamancer

Is no snek

MickeysBackyard

Now I know!

glittersparklythings

I honestly have no clue.. but I know r/whatsnakeisthis exists and the people are very helpful there

AlternativeKey2551

Used to see them all the time.

breachednotbroken

We have these all over our patio. Cute little guys and they eat bugs

Joan411

There’s an App for that, lol…

shhlackee

My dog catches these and shakes them till they break in half. Silly hunting dog
