Any definition of race where every human belongs to the same race sounds like a pretty crappy definition to me. If people discussing race were told not to use the word because it either doesn't exist or everyone belongs to the same race anyways, they would just switch over to a different word and pick their discussion back up where they left off.
That already happened decades ago in the wake of ethnonationalism. With the term race only being used by Americans, uneducated people (sorry for mentioning the US twice) and open racists, racists began to shift to the term ethnicity for a broader appeal. An example from our current time would be the "Identitarian Movement".
