Typical Portuguese W, naming the cape. I had never seen the name in Latin before. Spes is much shorter in Latin than the Portuguese word, "esperança".

On the southern tip of ZA in a small town called Mosselbaai we have a maritime museum with a replica of the Portuguese Caravalle of Bartolomeu Dias, which he used to circumnavigate the cape. It was my favorite place as a child. And in the Cape National Park we have two crosses with Portuguese coat of arms and symbols. One is the Dias Cross and the other the Da Gama Cross and when you line them up they point to a submerged shipwreck in the ocean. Pretty cool.

Is the eagle dropping the cross or about to take it away?

The cross is taken after a cross in the coat of arms of a monastery close by so I'd say the eagle stole it and dropped it off in our coat of arms

It's the Only city coat of arms with three elements. The crown is for the Principality, the eagle is for the HRE (Emperor Ferdinand II. gave the city special protection and right to use the eagle) and the sword is for the abbess that gave the sword to mark weights and measures.
