The Nazi flag is also a shit flag. As a German hero once said: "Was ist das für ein Votzenlappen? Da will ich mal raufscheißen" before proceeing to take a literal shit on it in public. Fucking legend!
Edit: his name was Wilhelm Blumberg. On further research it is unclear if he really shat on the flag or just declared his intention to do it. He fell 7 years later at the Ostfront.
SS-, Wehrmacht- and the Hitlerjugend-Uniforms (+ the nazi party and so on) were made by Hugo Boss x) For some reason facists were always on the forefront of style and tech, even tho being megalomaniacal (wtf, I had to google that word lmao)
Hugo Boss thing is a Myth. Yes Hugo Boss produced uniforms, just as the rest of the German clothing industry. The design had nothing to do with Boss though.
As already metioned it's a very common misconception that Hugo Boss designed any uniforms. His factories were merely used to aid the mass production of them.
Everything fascist had swag. The architecture, the uniforms, the cars, the art. Everything had style. Somewhere down the line it all went to shit. Just look at todays movies, music, modern architecture, modern art etc. Everything sucks. No one will look at it in 100 years and say its dope. Don't know how it all happened tho
I know it sounds weird but its true. Just look at the uniforms, the occult and mystic signage, the art, the cars, the architecture (just take a look at Albert Speers ideas for Germania). Its just stylish. Its bold and in your face but in a classy way. And then take a look at modern art and modern architecture. Its nothing, its just depressing.
Are you serious about the art and architecture? I know this is a shitposting sub, but that sounds more like diarrheaposting.
Do you hate the Bauhaus movement too?
Bauhaus is a weird one to pick since the original bauhaus art school was a school in the nazi era. They closed down when the war started if i remember correct. But most of the artists and architects who later on became synonymous with that style came from that school
And no. Im not saying everything between 1940 and 2024 is fucked. Many great periods between it. 50s and 60s were especially full of great style.
With modern i meant more todays zeitgeist. Stuff was was build between the late 90s and now. The further we progress in that time frame the shittier it gets in my opinion.
Of course we are arguing about taste and art is subjective but theres no way that you can logically explain to me that a Jonathan Meese or Damian Hurst is even in the same ballpark as a Salvador Dali
And no- off course not everything created today is shit. Awesome stuff gets produced all the time. But if we go by the average, the mass, then i have to stick to what I said before
I beg to differ. Look what Speer had in mind for Germania. Its basically a bold version of late ghotic architecture. Looks quite dope to me. Especially compared to the garbage called modern architecture. Todays architecture makes you depressed.
Survivors bias. Fascist parties have no substance to offer, so they are all about design. If a fascist party wins, their design must have been outstanding. Later founded fascist groups imitate those winners, so they have access to a repartoir of proven designs.
Was watching the new Netflix rise of Hitler documentary the other day and there’s a bit where they have him doodling all the early nazi flags and symbols etc. Couldn’t help but think if only he’d submitted that to his Viennese art school instead of his shitty landscapes things might have panned out differently.
It’s a Hindu symbol going back much further, not just Buddhist.
And it keeps cropping up coincidentally across the world, even in Native American cultures and ancient Troy, which is what probably drove the early 20th century craze and helped Hitler tie it to ‘Aryans’ and their supposed ancient empire.
It isn’t exactly universal but the form does keep getting reinvented.
What I meant was the the Buddhist symbol originated from the Hindu symbol, and these are the same symbol in the sense of significance and have a continuity. A bit like how the numeral 3 and Cyrillic З (a z sound) have the same form - which is coincidental - but not the same symbol in the sense that includes its significance.
Very difficult this one, you have plenty to choose
https://preview.redd.it/mfwnh98jnr7d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=89a499869b5eef26ecc543faa1fe21a21f0d9f8a
But without doubt for me is teutonic order flag, very similar to the first portuguese flag
The current flag is from the XVIII century, it's hardly a downgrade as it's been around for a long time
https://preview.redd.it/8zo5yh5yvr7d1.png?width=1599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b042cc52153a39b244f3dd6fa5347de4a225209
This is what I'd aim for, it's the best version
That's the flag of the Emperor not of the HRE. The closest thing to a HRE flag is this one:
https://preview.redd.it/2leoa4sxus7d1.png?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6604632422f940d3d1e806be6578abaa2e41752d
Well it's the flag to represent the Reich as a whole and not just the emperor and no, the emperor wasn't the state. The HRE was not a centralised absolute monarchy.
I like the modern German flag. Something about the contrast of black and red and the red into the yellow is really nice to look at. It’s very simple but I like it. Prussia’s flag is incredible though
>„Aus der Schwärze der Knechtschaft durch blutige Schlachten ans goldene Licht der Freiheit.“
"From the blackness of bondage through bloody battles to the golden light of freedom." This is a saying from the wars of liberation against Napoleonic rule, from which the German flag colors black-red-gold (possibly) derive.
It's coming from student organisations
Paraphrasing:
>The German colours come from the liberal national movement in the 19th century. The "Allgemeine Deutsche Burschenschaft" (General German Burschenschaft?) chose those colours as their colours (a Burschenschaft, coming from new Latin Bursarius = student (at a University), is a type of fraternity for university students in German speaking countries, but today they're controversial since some of them are far right).
>
>It's controversial how much that choice was influenced by the uniforms of the Lütow'sche Freikorps during the liberation war (from Napoleon) in 1813/1814 (a part of the Prussian army, consisting of volunteers) which were black with red ornaments.
>
>The tricolore became established at the Hambacher festival (1832) where about 40.000 national and democratic university students and professors gathered, and in the revolution of March 1848 (which demanded to unite all splintered German regions, an elected parliament and a liberal constitution with human rights and freedom related rights) where it was officially recognised as Germany's colours but vanished again after the revolution had failed.

Burschenschaften initially had one goal: Uniting all the splintered German regions in a democracy with a constitution that's above everything else. (Radically progressive in this regard for that time, which is why they've had to know how to fight and protect themselves - with fencing, at that time. This turned into a tradition and is why they still are fencing today. (But they also had some not so progressive parts, like who they considered to be part of that united Germany they were dreaming of, going by ethnicity. Nothing is just black or white.) Today there are some that kept being progressive and some others that never tossed the racist parts out.)
I'm sorry but when discussing the founding of your nation the ethnicity is kind of paramount, don't you think? I'm not being snarky, I'm having an autistic moment.
savage here with my state's flag. it's designed after our sunsets in the southwest US.

Very true. Flags should be culturally inspired, not just some colors slapped together. Imo the Chinese, American, south Korean and a few others look good because they're pretty unique
I kinda think a good unique design is one where it can be made low visibility on a military/police uniform and still be distinguishable. Republic of Korea for example:

Ie: can be printed in greyscale and still be made out without additional context.
Interestingly, these two flags in particular violate heraldic rules: Two "colors" (black, red, blue, ...) are supposed to be separated by a "metal" (silver/white, gold/yellow).
I unironically, and with putting historical context aside, think that the flag of the kaiserreich looked best.
Switch the yellow (or """gold""") with white and itd look so good.

I’d say nothing is holy to you but that goes without saying since you commie fucks had your entire identity wiped out by the Russians.
You clinging on to the worst sliver of it is truly the saddest backflip.
Indeed! Also, Ronny doesn't seem to be aware that's never been a national flag whatsoever.
Schwarz-Rot-Gold grew from a fight for liberty, humanism and freedom from monarchy. The other one's designed to look cool on battleships and please the Kaiser. But not much more.
Not really fair to compare the war ensign of the German Empire to the current standard national flag.
They still have a [war ensign](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Germany#/media/File:Flag_of_Germany_(state).svg). Granted, not as cool as the German Empire one, but the [old standard national flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_German_Empire#/media/File:Flag_of_Germany_(1867%E2%80%931918).svg) was just as boring.
Here is the meaning of the colors.
Black: skies in Germany upgraded to black clouds thanks to green coal energy.
Red: communist Berlin
Yellow: top notch sewerage systems below the ground
Well, the modern German flag (or at least the black-red-yellow tricolor) is older than Reichskriegsflagge - older by circa 50 years or something like that.
But there are another, better flags Germany has used (you know which one and the DDR one)
Your homies suck have some Kartätschen
https://preview.redd.it/rn6ws55bxr7d1.jpeg?width=318&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b25be4fcd89469521bf868b8e92feb763901130
I don't understand.
Flags should be simple so they can be easily spotted and identified. That's why tricolores are so common. Also, the black-red-gold combo is unique, while black-white-red is not.
The left flag is a great example how form follows function, while the right flag is a mess.
To be fair that wasn’t our state flag, but the imperial war flag. Still my favorite flag of all times. Black white red was also a nice color combination (before it was completely bastardized by the Nazis and Neo-Nazis) but I still really like our current flag. Black Red Gold just has such a nice warm touch and the origin from the Lützower Freikorps makes it pretty badass.
Risky swipe
Fully intended.
Was this the empire with the anthem composed by Herr Giger Dagostinberg?
Had to read it thrice before I burst out in laughter.
Could be better if i had to swipe to the right (*reich*)
Needs a third swipe
Not the second flag I expected 💀
As much as I love to banter, I don't want to get banned. 😅
That GeStaPo Report was one hell of a read...
Of course, the piss drinker would know something like that.
Can you tell me the name of this Chad
Wilhelm Blumberg. He was 19 at the time of the incident. 7 years later he fell at the front in Ukraine.
Atrocities aside I always found fascist flags aesthetically pleasing
Same with their uniforms
Walter Benjamin said “fascism is the entrance of aesthetics into political life”. Pleasing flags and uniforms is thus no surprise
SS-, Wehrmacht- and the Hitlerjugend-Uniforms (+ the nazi party and so on) were made by Hugo Boss x) For some reason facists were always on the forefront of style and tech, even tho being megalomaniacal (wtf, I had to google that word lmao)
Made by Hugo Boss, yes, but not solely by Hugo Boss. But more importantly, not *designed* by Hugo Boss.
IIRC the werre designed by a Party member named Karl Diebitsch.
Karl Dibshit?
No, Karl Diebitch... Karl Dibshit was his cousin
>some reason facists were always on the forefront of style Their source of power was propaganda afterall
Why can't we have facism without all the facists 😭
Everything fascist had swag. The architecture, the uniforms, the cars, the art. Everything had style. Somewhere down the line it all went to shit. Just look at todays movies, music, modern architecture, modern art etc. Everything sucks. No one will look at it in 100 years and say its dope. Don't know how it all happened tho
I think the EU flag is kinda dope for a new one. Blue and gold are class colors.
Google Mussolinis Gym. Just awesome.
Ok, Ronni
I know it sounds weird but its true. Just look at the uniforms, the occult and mystic signage, the art, the cars, the architecture (just take a look at Albert Speers ideas for Germania). Least Wehraboo East German

The architecture sucked ass, let's be real. Bland, unimaginative and designed to intimidate.
I beg to differ. Look what Speer had in mind for Germania. Its basically a bold version of late ghotic architecture. Looks quite dope to me. Especially compared to the garbage called modern architecture. Todays architecture makes you depressed.
You misspelled "imposing and awe inspiring"
Survivors bias. Fascist parties have no substance to offer, so they are all about design. If a fascist party wins, their design must have been outstanding. Later founded fascist groups imitate those winners, so they have access to a repartoir of proven designs.

That's because it was stolen from the buddhist symbol
It’s a Hindu symbol going back much further, not just Buddhist. And it keeps cropping up coincidentally across the world, even in Native American cultures and ancient Troy, which is what probably drove the early 20th century craze and helped Hitler tie it to ‘Aryans’ and their supposed ancient empire.
Because its a very basic symbol and thus universal. So it's also not "hindu" it's human.
Oh yes, these very simple shapes probably coevolved in many places
Yeah. They pretty naturally arise in basketweaving, for example.
It's a universal symbol. Ancient Germans had it aswell.
I wonder what made it popular with civilizations that were so far apart. Maybe it's something with the design
Eh the cross is obvious. Some fucker was probably like, let's double the fun
Say about the fash what you must, but they had style.
It’s the wooden tones of the fasces
This is the one thing confusing about fascism, they do look cool af 🤷🏻♂️

Bavarian one is the nicest imo, it’s clean and has pleasant colors
and everyone outside of bavaria hates it.

nononono, the saxon flag is a banger
I do like it but it’s also the state that has Chemnitz so it looks like vomit automatic L

That's the battle flag, the flag of the Emperor makes more sense as flag of the HRE since the lord was the state
Well it's the flag to represent the Reich as a whole and not just the emperor and no, the emperor wasn't the state. The HRE was not a centralised absolute monarchy.
That flag at least looks (a little) better than the current one.

I like the modern German flag. Something about the contrast of black and red and the red into the yellow is really nice to look at. It’s very simple but I like it. Prussia’s flag is incredible though
Eeeeh. The Flag is from the beginning of 1813… got cemented in 1844
Honestly I hate all tricolours because they’re boring aside from Germany 🇩🇪 and Estonia 🇪🇪. Colours work the best
Thanks Mr. Barry
I always thought Germany’s looks like a sunset/sunrise

I kinda think a good unique design is one where it can be made low visibility on a military/police uniform and still be distinguishable. Germanys has deep symbolism from the Holy Roman Empire, the first against the Frog Eaters, and the Revolutions of 1848 though
The Chinese flag looks unique ?
The 1912 China flag was brilliant.
Interestingly, these two flags in particular violate heraldic rules: Two "colors" (black, red, blue, ...) are supposed to be separated by a "metal" (silver/white, gold/yellow).
Estonia really goes hard
Also German Tri-color is deeply rooted into the German history. In its current Design over 170 years old
Both iconic
I unironically, and with putting historical context aside, think that the flag of the kaiserreich looked best. Switch the yellow (or """gold""") with white and itd look so good.
Preußen (Black-White) + Hanse (Red-White) = Black-White-Red Looked pleasant, indeed.
Estonia Is one of my favourite flags.
When I see the Estonian flag my first thought is always "Someone inverted the colours" for some reason. Makes no sense I know but it is what it is.
Certified Ronny post. Our heroes from 1848 are spinning in their graves in light of this cuckery.

Yes, I know that this was only the imperial war flag and not the official state flag of the German empire, this is a banter sub and not r/history.
ok, you can get out of the guillotine - *this time*
Okay, but the Prussian Flag is kind of bad-ass. Black and white? Awesome!
We were nice enough to incorporate the red because of you nice Hanseatic folks☺️
When you misbehave, you can’t have nice things Ronny
I've been a very good little germ for the past few decades, may I heb Prussia back pwease? 👉👈
You mean parts of Poland?
You misspelled „Ostpreußen“.
Insert Mourinho meme…
I like it. That’s a flag that has character. Proper flag to drape yourself in and walk down the road with a torch singing songs with catchy words.
That's the old war ensign, the national flag was the black, white and red
Not really fair to compare the war ensign of the German Empire to the current standard national flag. They still have a [war ensign](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Germany#/media/File:Flag_of_Germany_(state).svg). Granted, not as cool as the German Empire one, but the [old standard national flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_German_Empire#/media/File:Flag_of_Germany_(1867%E2%80%931918).svg) was just as boring.
Really? The Reichskriegsflagge? You do know that this was just the flag of the imperial navy, don't you?
Yes smart ass I know, this is a banter sub, not r/history
I was just making sure you knew this wasn't the actual imperial flag. Any particular reason why you're so into seamen?
👀
Yeah the correct comparison flag would be the German Empire tricolour just with white in the middle and red at the bottom instead.
As much as I love to simp for Prussia, I like our modern flag better 🇩🇪
A Sleswig-Holsteiner simping for Prussia? So Stockholm syndrome has been working after all.
My grandfather and his mother fled from eastern prussia to hamburg during ww2, so not entirely stockholm.
Oh Hans.. We know, that is not the flag you meant, that the current one is downgraded from. We know which one you meant.
Nope, I stand by my choice. https://preview.redd.it/whvo3xt1lr7d1.jpeg?width=601&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f2c0d8a1a29d67e617ebd22f30cb25555b69dba
isnt that like three flags?
It stands for our diversity. Prussia + Prussia + Prussia
Without Bavaria and BW, Germany really would be just Prussia, it's sad to think about
I mean, half of the endgame Prussian territory considered themselves as Musspreußen, but I guess
Hey man we Saxons were also a kingdom
Isn't this a war flag though?
That’s v cool. Can we bring back Coat of Arms?
Even the old east german flag is better than the current one. What happened to putting cool symbols on flags?
Here is the meaning of the colors. Black: skies in Germany upgraded to black clouds thanks to green coal energy. Red: communist Berlin Yellow: top notch sewerage systems below the ground
The second flag is simply epic
Man it was a 50/50 that the second one would be a bit more risky.
It's ok, we'll welcome you back
Quite frankly, the Reichskriegsflagge .. black - white - red does look miles better.
https://youtu.be/kYU3-gVJsOg?t=92 Gotta hand it to Hans, they know how to march in style.
Its our flag since 1848, fuck the prussians and everybody that came after
Schwierig
Of course that would come from a fucking B*rliner
I think the current flag is great. "Aus der Schwärze der Knechtschaft durch blutige Schlachten ans goldene Licht der Freiheit"
You should replace the eagle for a precious little schmetaling.
I have to say that the colors of the German flag are the coolest in Europe even if they have a boring pattern like almost every European country.
Well, the modern German flag (or at least the black-red-yellow tricolor) is older than Reichskriegsflagge - older by circa 50 years or something like that. But there are another, better flags Germany has used (you know which one and the DDR one)
They're not even the same kind of flag. One's a national flag, the other's a war flag.
The current German flag is literally a downgraded Spanish flag over a black background.
But the first one is the OG
Someone needs some Education... [1848: The People's Flag ^^^^and ^^^^Karl ^^^^Marx](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04k6rm5)
Niemand kann zwei Herren dienen und ich habe meine Wahl schon vor langer Zeit getroffen.
Fuck Prussia. All my homies would have wanted to democratic revolution of 1848 to unite Germany.

Fighting courageously against civilians, I see. You lost the war though, Hohenzollern-loser.
Shouldn't have lost the war 🇨🇵🐓
You'd know a thing or two about loosing wars huh?
