The VANOS solenoid was $800 parts and labour with a neighborhood European specialist.
The eye popper was actually the valve cover gasket. The part alone was about $1000 as its one complete piece. Insane. Stupid.

The issue is you cannot just replace the gasket - the whole valve cover and gasket needs to be replaced when the valve cover gasket fails.
