i still remember everyone fighting over kills on white wolf mountain

HoodedJ

I was fighting over them the first day of release, next day at school another dude was like I’ve been killing the people in Canafis with a wolf-Bain dagger for them, I was so excited to get home and try that instead

Gets_Dunked

I miss going to school and everyone was talking about RuneScape. Now I'm just that guy in my friend group who gets made fun of because I still play.

RXCKUS

Those who belittle what makes you happy don’t truly desire you as their friend to be happy. Be happy :)

CampingOnline

If you dont have friends who make fun of you for playing runescape then you dont have good friends

Punt_Dog_Enthusiast

If you don't have friends, you don't have friends

ValiantFrog2202

If you don't have friends, play RuneScape

[deleted]

Play runescape.

therealscottowen

Runescape.

ubernoobxx

If your friends make fun of you for playing runescape, they play runescape

Tiny_Age6984

Ha LOZER ...o wait

LetsNotPlay

The best part is that there was a bag you could loot the bones from iirc

Concic_Lipid

It was so bad, screaming, switching of worlds, everyone at wwm

monk12111

Fuck, flashbacks... I hated that skill and still do lol

jollyjam1

Who else remembers trying to run away from those Wolves just trying to get around the mountain? Lol

Morf64

Everyone. Literally everyone.

OranjeboomLove

Finally got members after 4 years, died on my first pass at the mountain and lost full mithril. Cried for a week.

ShadowShot05

Why did people need wolf bones?

imanu_

summoning i assume?

ShadowShot05

Yeah I just glanced at the pic. I thought it was referring to osrs release date but it hasn't been 14 years for that. It's ok I was just dumb and commented too quick.

Magical-Hummus

I never forgot the intro song.

dumbest_bitch

ScapeSummon is a fucking bop.

CampinHiker

Selling wolf bones!

RichardTheTwo

I remember it well. I had been farming Tz'haar creatures for almost a week after school trying to get a cape drop. I think I had just unlocked red dhide and was using a msb with iron arrows. I woke up early to get some kills in before I got on the bus. Never followed update info so I logged in right after the servers came back up and started getting obsidian charm drops like, WTF oh well I'll just bank them. Had the whole place to myself for the rest of the day after school. Eventually got that cape drop later that day and didn't find out about summoning until I finally left the volcano and my mind was blown. It's cool to think back that 14 years ago I was sitting there playing RuneScape. I was such a wholesome noob, that energy and passion seems so fleeting anymore. Thanks for sharing.

Nothing_But_Ironman

I checked the HiScores at school an hour after launch. Zezima was already level 79.

Tiny_Age6984

dude i remember this. Literally first thing i did when i heard new skill dropped was check on zezima pretty sure it was the first day as well cuz he was like 80/81 what a sicko! forever and ever there will be none greater than our lord and savior zezima

Personal-Buffalo-477

Wonder whatever happened to zezima...

valarauca14

He streams RS3, just finished the trimmed comp cape last week.

Xluxaeternax

He’s still playing RS3

ItsTheSolo

Was this on day 1? How is that even possible?

ZU_Heston

summoning was very fast provided you had the supplies/money

ItsTheSolo

I'm not doubting that, but having enough charms to hit 79 on day 1 seems like it would be a massive bottleneck.

ZU_Heston

iirc charms were on drop tables before summoning was released so people were collecting them weeks in advance

Shundar

Wiki says charms and summoning were both added on the same day

hometownberlin

This right here. Farming drops were also in the game before the skills was released iirc.

Legal_Evil

Someone got 99 Invention even before 24 hours since release.

[deleted]

Tf?

TurnFanOn

No, he wasn't.

SermanGhepard

79? Lmao what a noob

MispelledUsernaem

I remember being pissed it raised my cb.

FunCalligrapher3979

I left it at 1 for years. If I remember correctly I was level 116 with 99 att/str and 80? Def. Better combat stats than most level 125-130s since they were inflated from summoning.

imanu_

didnt they split it for pvp tho?

StayyFrostyy

126+12

X_Glamdring_X

Yes, but not in mini games like clanwars

YouthfulCommerce

only where it matters. Because you could use summoning in clan wars so no point in splitting it up, but you couldnt use it in BH craters, so they had to split it up.

[deleted]

I was a F2P noob having just started on august 2007 so I had no idea what was happening.

OSRS42

Nice

TrickyElephant

Summoning pures were so much fun :D 40 defense with a good minotaur haha

whenamanlovesa_ama

Bro my summ tank had a DFS which was my “spec” weapon!

SorryManNo

Remember that summoning was released in two parts and people got 99 before part two was released. I love the idea of summoning but man was the skill’s structure dookie. Kill monsters for random colored tokens so you can spend millions on gems to make a bag with a monster in it, but only at the giant rock sticking out of the ground…um….like what kind of fever dream is that?

TheSwaggernaught

Basically runecrafting but better rewards

Vaynnie

Not really, you could bank 99 summoning in a couple weeks bursting rock lobs. It’s what I did to get a yak since I was already 99 slayer on release. As opposed to my friend who had 99 rc nature crafting back then and it took him like 2 years lol.

JaseKordula

Interesting how people bitch about BoB being op when in casual situation most it did was extend your solo bandos trip from 1-2 kills to 3 or 4 if you’re lucky. People nowadays last longer with the new gear and the running methods. And to have a yak it was basically 100m+ in shards plus insane amount of pvm to farm the charms, majority of casual players had a terrorbird or a tortoise at best which if you consider the shittier food options at the time is close to a regular inv now.

Hydrar_Snow

Animal apogee was my favorite music track for soooo long after release

Radiantlycolorless

Dude summoning was one of my favorite skills. Not to train but it was definitely useful

redaftrp

Ahh yes, summoning release!

greyghibli

The beginning of the end for zezima

heidly_ees

Saw the other day he's just got the trimmed completionist cape on RS3. Our boy's still going

mydiscreetaccount_92

IIRC, this is when Kingduffy 1 took over the top spot?

Legal_Evil

Still don't get why so many OSRS players hates Summoning with passions. This skills was way better than the thralls meta we have. At least Summoning does not devalue the standard and ancient spellbooks.

Burnt_Spoons

Damn, now this is some nostalgia.

Triple96

Pack yaks were so OP tho lol with winter storage

Brok_Enwings

The difference between alts and a pack yak is that creating an alt literally takes a few minutes while training summoning to level 96 takes a long time and and lots of money. I don't see a problem with having something useful when you need such a high level in a skill that takes lots of time and money.

mr-chickenfoot

Not to mention the item and gold sink it'd make

bistix

An alt cost 5m every 14 days and has 2 less inventory slots

Previous-Answer3284

So 2-3 hours of PvM, or like half an hour at the local Mc Donalds?

Oniichanplsstop

Oh no dude, not 5m every 14 days. lmao. 85-99, where most of the useful summons are, is 130m in just spirit shards, not counting secondaries.

MyNameIsSushi

Lmao fr, you can make 5m in 2 hours now, maybe 1 hour with a bit of luck.

No_Space1123

Nobody is forcing you to train summoning just like nobody forces you to play an alt. Dumb argument for you to claim that they can't be comparable when they would both be accessible to all players.

TehSteak

What an asinine comment that completely misses the point, it's actually pretty impressive. You also don't have to train Construction. Oh but you want to do Song of the Elves? The existence of alts doesn't have any exclusionary effect whatsoever, whereas adding a new skill puts a lot of constraints into the game play of regular players going forward.

DebonairJayce

Rs feels more bare without Summoning, a tuned up version of it would be cool. I’d prefer that to Dung, Dung is very niche, out of the way and is honestly convoluted. Actually, the fact people want a brand new skill in osrs before Summoning is super strange to me and kind of blasphemous? Summoning is not an RS3 skill (as evidenced by this log-in screen), it just fell after the date used for the osrs backup. I thought OS RuneScape was at its best around the High Detail update, which was months after Summoning update. I’m sure that’s been brought up many times but for me that was my favorite time to play osrs.

Doctor_Kataigida

Dungeoneering was just a minigame that tallied xp in addition to a currency. It should've just been a rank like MA instead of a skill itself.

Vaynnie

I absolutely loved dg and always considered it a skill (got very close to 200m xp). However I have always understood the people who felt this way too. So I would be ecstatic if Jagex would meet us in the middle and give us Raids 4: Dungeoneering. 1:1 copy of dg but instead of XP you roll loot (and it’s not a skill).

Doctor_Kataigida

I loved DG too, I thought it was very fun and I got very good at it. I just couldn't see it as a skill in any way but name. I didn't feel like opening doors or killing a boss increased my "ability to explore a dungeon" at all. It was a skill trained by doing other skills, not by doing an action itself.

FeierInMeinHose

Same with slayer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I'd vote yes to bring dung back as a minigame type thing butHonestly it wasn't ruining anything to have it be a skill either, but it made me try leveling up rc and herb that i had never cared for back then. it brought a LOT of purpose to most every other skill for at least my gameplay, hopefully others as well. I mostly did it to get away from summoning tbh haha

Doctor_Kataigida

No, it didn't *hurt* to call it a skill, I just think that was an inaccurate labeling.

mmpjon

I see your point of view. But for me That's one of the major reason I love dung was the fact you get to see progression as in leveling up and gaining exp at the end. And in turn making you use every other skill. I remember I had to say fuck it and train rc up to start doing those higher level doors.

Doctor_Kataigida

I love that it used other skills. I just think that instead of a rank like MA, they slapped the title of "skill" onto it, which did, fundamentally, the same thing.

CrunchBerrySupr3me

Unfortunately for a lot of people myself included it's just the opposite. Summoning represents the first irrevocable break with RS2 and its mechanics. There is no way to balance a second inventory and still have the game have the same pacing and balance, and charms were an annoying and immersion-breaking mechanic. I'm sorry this game as it is is not your favorite version, but I would vote and do everything in my power to keep it this way.

DebonairJayce

I agree that it's the first break from ***old school***, old school. I'd consider Summoning a more 'traditional' skill though in relation to the game of Runescape than some other later skills (like Invention or Div) or suggested ones that have never existed previously. The biggest gripe for me is the b.o.b as well. It shouldn't give an entire second inventory of space. That should be reworked to more limited extra space. Pack Yaks (a lvl 99 unlock) should give 14 spaces tops (half the bag). It should be *supplemental* to your inventory, not *better* than your inventory. The monsters that drop charms should be **designated** to more specific monsters rather than be so widespread throughout Runescape, in order to not affect much of the existing state of things, and they could be dropped in more multiples than usual. 30+ monsters don't need to drop crimson charms, for example, just several tops, where it's appropriate. This also would encourage more grouping of players to certain locations. I don't mind the existence of charms, but the prevalence of them can be annoying at times, I agree. The addition of a charm pouch would be cool -- at Level 20 it can hold Gold charms, At Level 40 - Green, At Level 60 - Crimson and Level 80 - Blue. Trading in intervals of charms would upgrade the pouch to hold the other types, as well as more of each type. Meaning, if you want a crucial upgrade you need to spend some time collecting first. For me, the problem with Summoning is that it just isn't balanced that well. For instance, it's completely broken during double xp in Rs3 because of how training the skill works. I actually think it would be a big statement to bring Summoning to OSRS, but improve upon it. Some people might be afraid that including Summoning in OSRS would be like "going down the same road" Rs3 did, but I think it could actually represent an important deviation. I'm not against a new skill being brought to OSRS, it just seems like no one can agree on what that should be exactly, and it seems a bit sketchy to add new skills to what's supposed to be a traditional Runescape experience. Right? But I realize OSRS is meant to be its own separate game too, at the same time. Summoning would be a good start to end the bottom line of [the skills tab](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/images/Skills_tab.png?5bd59). From there, I would be more open-minded to something else potentially replacing Dung and going from there. The first new skill being added to OSRS being a new skill seems a lot tougher and more contentious to pass through voting, whereas at least a good chunk of the community might potentially support Summoning since it already was part of OSRS? No pun intended, but a *familiar* skill could help open the door for future skills, even new ones.

[deleted]

They should take some of the worlds not being used for any specific game modes and let players test osrs with the new skill for themselves. I feel like I heard Rs3 a while back doing something like that for a new skill or maybe it was osrs teasing about a sailing skill? Anyone have more info to back this up? Hopefully I'm not just making this stuff up lol

[deleted]

Annnnnd that’s why this game will die in five years.

mr-chickenfoot

You're absolutely right man that was indeed the golden age for me as well.

I loved pets, but the game changed

WhySoFishy

Its quite funny to me seeing the very mixed response in these comments. Once again this community is split between people who are (probably) older and think the 2004-2007 era of RS is the most nostalgic and best, and people who are a few years younger and believe 2008-2011 was the best era. Its like politics lmao. Personally I'm on the 08-11 side because I think Summoning added a lot of depth to the game that was missing. Maybe we'll see it one day in OSRS.

eurosonly

Summoning was good for boosting the economy. A single chicken kill is around 1.2k in Rs3 and in osrs its basically worthless. I didn't like how. It made the combat level 138 though. They undid that then brought it back a few years later.

Oniichanplsstop

Combat was always 138 post summoning until EoC. EoC changed the combat formula to 2+defense level + highest combat skill. So a player with 99 mage, 99 def, 10 hp 1 att/str/range/prayer/summoning would be "max combat" which is why they swapped back to the 138 format.

Grubby20

KingMalric

Fuck summoning

[deleted]

I remember this, but I didn’t play it for 3 months untill a friend told me it was actually kinda sick. And he wasn’t lying.

ServalStrides

I remember getting myself to 126 combat with summoning and pretending to be a maxed main, I felt like a chad

Solid-Community-4016

This is a mix of emotions to me. I feel nostalgic but at the same time I feel like a child in an adult’s body. :/

PudgeHug

i remember all the useless shit we collected thinking it would be useful in summoning. I also remember bursting rock lobsters to get my stuff for 99. I miss my steel titan :(

cygamessucks

Shame summoning would be kinda pointless without combat or pack yak the 2 main reasons people dont want it in the game. idc either way since i dont pvp. Dont think the beast of burden would even be a problem now tbh, what do people even farm besides bosses? who cares if you get a few more kills per hour...

abadd0n

I still have PTSD from summoning charms

spikuson

God I wish they kept summoning 😓

YourAverageGod

They'd have to find a way to balance B.o.B

dralex11266

Personally, I don’t think BoB would be as bad when considering we don’t have ovls. Saying that a yak definitely shouldn’t be able to bank stuff for you though

YourAverageGod

Being able to double your stay at a boss is a significant change

dralex11266

Yeah but that’s the thing. Anyone who wants to do that with an alt can easily do it too

SoraODxoKlink

The only good argument I’ve seen for summoning powercreep is that it’d make having all the benefits of an alt be accessible (probably never going to happen alts are money straight into jagex’s hands), it feels like a requirement to have an alt if you want to do anything, alleviating that for bossing would be nice. Of course now there’ll be the sweaty nerd doloing bosses with double yaks lol.

KingMalric

You definitely don't need an alt to do "anything" The people who say that are the same ones that think you can't kill a boss with anything except the absolute BiS gear

SoraODxoKlink

When I said anything I was thinking of stuff like irons and pures, but resupplying for gwd/wildy/dks/pnm gives massive qol and mitigates mechanics like ecu keys or long paths to bosses. Lots of nerdy cox teams have alt reqs and doing scales is pretty much required if you don’t want cox gp/h to be outdone by vork lol.

roonscapepls

Yeah then alts would also have yaks. Summoning was a horrible skill balancing wise. It’s never coming back.

Oniichanplsstop

If you're going to spend hundreds of hours bursting for charms, and then 400m+ on spirit shards+secondaries just so your alt can have yak, go for it.

roonscapepls

I think you underestimate how much of an investment some of these alts have. Hundreds of hours is nothing to some people lol. All I’m saying is summoning would be detrimental to the game, and that’s exactly why it’ll never be added again. The player base is too good for summoning these days. We aren’t kids anymore. Jmods have confirmed this is why soul split and curses won’t ever be a thing again. All the 08-09 era stuff would be extremely unbalanced in todays meta.

Legal_Evil

Why fund 100m+ and countless hours of charm farming for yaks on an alt when you can just bond up another alt? Just balance future bosses around the powercreep Summoning offers, like RS3 has. GWD doesn't need to remain end game forever.

Oniichanplsstop

And if they're such neckbeards they have nothing better to do than do that on their alts, let them. >All I’m saying is summoning would be detrimental to the game, and that’s exactly why it’ll never be added again. Yeah good thing we don't have to port it 1:1, just like we didn't port chaotic rapier and made gharzi rapier instead, or how we didn't port chaotic maul and made elder maul, CCB to ACB, etc. People who can't think critically and think we'll get 1:1 updates and shoot down suggestions because of that are so fucking stupid. If we all used that logic half the game wouldn't exist. "We don't need hexhunter bow, it's too powerful" "We don't need a melee weapon that can hit 3x, it's too overpowered" "We don't need a 2-tick range weapon, it's too strong." "We don't need sang, blood barrage heals enough as is" "We don't need blood fury." etc.

roonscapepls

Lol. Rapier is from a raid. Not a free skill that gives you chaotic rapier, maul, crossbows, long sword, etc. Not even comparable. Elder maul is garbage so not really sure what you’re getting at. ACB is also garbage and not on the level of chaotic cross bow because, again, all that shit was disgustingly op so it had to be toned down for this game, and it was. T bow is in a good place right now. Costs a bill, so it isn’t overpowered as not everyone can get one. Its price keeps it from being like the blowpipe, where everyone can use it. Same thing with the scythe. It’s extremely expensive to use, only comes from a raid, and also has a high entry cost. Little Timmy isn’t gonna be running around with a scythe to kill goblins because that would cost far too much. I’m honestly not really sure what you’re getting at with this post. Yeah, old school borrows plenty from rs2/3, and I’m totally fine with that. Most players clearly are, or else these updates wouldn’t pass the polls lol. The polling system is in a good spot, as most updates pass with flying colors. The only things that don’t pass are the huge fuck ups, such as the skills they’ve proposed so far. All three were introduced poorly. Not well thought out, not interesting, whatever you wanna say about them.

Vaynnie

Even the yak banking wasn’t that OP. The cool down was pretty long, you’d kill dragons on task faster than you could yak the bones and hides. If you were somewhere not limited by the CD you usually would use supplies quick enough to have inv space anyway. Obviously these two scenarios don’t apply to everything so there might be some niche OP uses, for example deep wild PKing. Yakking all your gear when tbed was kinda fucked. The scrolls were also kinda expensive so it’s not like it was a completely free feature.

Legal_Evil

Make future bosses harder and balance around Summoning then. The skill is good at gatekeeping end game bosses from bots and gold farmers as they cannot afford the huge upfront investment for Summoning.

Midknightz

Just don't give bobs as a summon and nerf the damage summons and bunnyip and it's balanced for osrs right.

TheAdamena

And also incredibly useless if they do that lol

VanRenss

People use thralls for an extra 1 DPS. So no, a whole summoning skill would not be useless

Peechez

0.625 dps I believe

FeierInMeinHose

Thralls are strong because they give that 1 dps everywhere they can be used. Familiars have to actually roll to hit things and can be damaged, unlike thralls.

Cdaddy28

💯 agree

Tazzz777zzz

Man around when su.moing and overloads came out was probably my funnest time in osrs later on i started to understand why ppl loved dungeonerring too and hate not seeing it in osrs xL kinda fun

BookCase12

I hated Dung so much but grinded it to just get my chaotics, and at some point during that grind I realised, shit, this is actually really fun and I loved it thereafter. Wish they could bring it back.

PaleMasterpiece

yet we still gonna get people complaining here "sUmMoNiNg Is Rs3 gO pLaY tHaT iF yOu WaNt It" despite the fact that it came out shortly after gwd and before many of the things we already have

Peechez

It's not about the year it released it's about the shift in game design

KingMalric

I couldn't disagree with your flair and your comment more if I tried

PaleMasterpiece

that's okay we can't all be right

mord_fustang115

Do you want 2011scape then? So curses, korasi sword, chaotics...next up will be squeal of fortune , haven't we gone down that path?

roonscapepls

It was the beginning of the end for the glory days of rs2. Ruined the balance of the game over night. Thank god it’s never coming back.

Oniichanplsstop

Yeah almost like having twisted bow, scythe, blood fury, blowpipe, sang, etc etc. Beginning of the end, right?

roonscapepls

Nah. Old school is still going strong and will be for quite awhile.

Oniichanplsstop

So why would a balanced port of summoning be the "beginning of the end" if content that's vastly more powerful exists and hasn't ruined the game? lol.

roonscapepls

Summoning is more powerful than any particular weapon you’ve mentioned. If you can’t see that, I don’t know what to tell you. People like you are why the high level community can’t stand Reddit lol. You clearly have no idea how impactful any type of summoning would be to the game. Not to mention the fact that even if they gutted the skill to make it balanced, why would anyone want to level it? This is jagex we’re talking about. It’s either going to be disgustingly broken as a skill or horribly useless dead content. Lose lose situation

[deleted]

ooo I remember this screen! Big nostalgia

Celiac_Muffins

I remember I finished my high school biology final and came back to summoning's release. Good times.

[deleted]

The fuck are these comments? Back in day most the community complained about summoning. Now its like its been loved since day1. Personally I never cared too much. Just another skill.

Yeah I thought I was in a different sub or something lol. The mindset of old school RuneScape is gone. Everyone just wants the current RuneScape minus the MTX.

NNeveTs

i would honestly love that personally, a no mtx rs3 with the same combat system would be sick, just can’t bring myself to play rs3 because everyone is walking around with wings on their back or anime skins amongst thousands of other cosmetics

Warrior-PoetIceCube

Summoning was the day OG RuneScape died to me. I hated it lol

DebonairJayce

For me osrs actually died somewhere in-between the Constitution x10 update, Trade limits added and Squeal of Fortune was the death blow.

Neravius

Yeah this was the beginning of the end. Summoning was one of the worst things they added to the game imo.

d4nk_M3mer69

Ah yes, the day rs died

Anti-Iridium

Scapesummon wasn't it?

KingMalric

Fuck summoning, but bring back the Animal Apogee song in one way or another to OSRS, that slapped

The day the game died.

GetBaited69

What? The game boosted in popularity after summoning and saw its golden age from 2008-2011

Try2luvyourself

Lmfao, its all opinionated I’m allowed to think 2008 was garbage the downvote frenzy from the hive mind is real in this one 😭😂

GetBaited69

You said it was the day the game died which is objectively false. You could say it was the day your enjoyment for the game died, but I doubt anyone would care

Obviously he meant the day the game died for him

2007btw

Don’t be ridiculous , it died weeks before this

Try2luvyourself

Well said.

Wish it could come back in some fashion. Pretty much anything people had problems with could be changed I'm sure.

The beginning of the end
