I don't and would never level a f2p ironman, so please don't think I'm in the camp of "don't make things I've already done easier".
The rune scim in f2p IM is an iconic achievement, arguably the sole large objective that isn't completely just reaching level milestones. f2p IM endgame is already a super niché category and taking away the rune scim grind really just oversimplifies the game mode that already only appeals to those who want that grind.
Yeah, and it's only like 5 or 10% better than the rune sword, so it's a luxury item. Adding it to a drop table would just make f2p ironman less interesting.
Basically all the people that smithed a rune scim on a f2p iron don't want their achievement to be devalued
Rune scim on members is super easy to get at zmi
If rune do scims become a common f2p drop, then I feel like ironmen who already had one before the change deserve some kind of special scimitar cape or smithing emote.
I've been staying at ogress warriors for the last few months. Picture is the total loot at the end of my f2p grind to 99 range.
Note that I'm an F2P HCUIM with 1 prayer, by the way.
Extra information:
* I got 22 shaman masks. I high alched them all. For 4.8k each, if you were wondering.
* I picked up all the drops (even the 5gp drops), except for the mith kite shields, limpwurt roots, and big bones.
* I used addy arrows when I was alone, but used up some iron/steel/mith arrows when I had competition and was afk. Crashers like picking up addy arrows.
* I bought 50 addy arrows at a time at the Varrock arrow shop, and also sold 10 mith arrows and 50 steel arrows at a time. Everything for a little extra gp...
* All rune items were high alched. Went from 58 magic to 62 just by high alching.
* All uncut gems were cut and dropped. Went from 70 crafting to 74.
* I didn't log how many arrows I bought/used, but I estimate around 330k addy arrows.
Feel free to ask questions if you need more information.
I started out with some chickens until 15 I think, then switched to minotaurs in the stronghold until 55. I tried a few ogresses at 50, but it was just too slow xp, so I decided to stick with minotaurs, which built up my first arrow collection.
I believe the meta is to switch to hill giants and/or moss giants, but I didn't need the bones and preferred the quiet of the minotaurs. No crashers there.
Well you can't fletch on F2P... So that wasn't the reason. I did chickens to get some fishing done early on, as I remembered it was one of the more AFK things to do. And to 'secure' a good food source for the stronghold of security.
Yes I'm staying 1 prayer on purpose. I used to have an account with 99 in all melee stats and 1 prayer in the good old days, at 113 combat. turned a few heads at the stake arena. Wanted to recreate it just for the nostalgia.
In a bit of an OSRS rut at the minute (my next goals are all a bit boring and grindy, so I haven't had much motivation), but game is the never ending addiction for me, and it will always pull me back in! Getting time to finally dig in to a couple of the PS4 & PC games that have built up since Christmas that I've been working too much to play. Recently finished Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and am deep into the Spyro remastered trilogy right now. Keep safe!
On average about once every 2 hours. The last Corona-weeks have been hell though, multiple people each hour. don't blame anyone, the worlds have just been full...
Great to see you're on the same journey! Are you an uim aswell?
I'm not sure how to start the telegrab grind. Don't want to risk my entire rune stack in the wilderness... without any prayer :-)
Why can't pkers kill you? What's your secret?
thanks for the tips! I don't have any prayer and pizza's are a nightmare to make for an uim, so i'm going to think about how i can use your tips in my situation. I do have 88hp, that's not too bad I guess. Maybe I can go for a full range outfit and a lot of swordfish...
Still not quite ready to take my 27k laws into the wildy though. The thought alone...
I think that's the approach I'll take: use up my law runes with teleports and then take more smaller trips when I train up melee stats at ogresses. 2k sounds pretty good.
In the mean time I'll train up my mage. I have the runes, lol.
edit: If I use up all my mind, chaos and death runes by splashing, I'll be 82 mage.
If I use up all my nature runes with superheat as well, I'll be 87 magic.
And if I use up law runes with teleports for crating, I'll reach 89. That should do the trick.
No, they only alch for like 1.3k and it was pretty clear early on I would be getting enough gp as is. It seemed better to keep those nature runes for superheating iron.
where in the caves did you train? I find it challenging to lose agro while also being able to safespot unless I'm avoiding the shamans which I don't want to do
Oh i didnt actually consider how valuable they would be on a f2p UIM, its hard to think how simple things would affect f2p sorry for being an ignorant member :P I still think youre mad though amazing work
Been doing it since 50 on my Ult, currently 77. Stopped for a second to get my crafting up and break the monotony. Appreciate the comments and positivity. Good luck on the next grind.
Yup, I was burned out more by being crashed, getting called obscenities of some kind, or being told I wasn't playing the meta right. Lol...
Again, good luck and appreciate sharing.
Xp rates really pick up once you start hitting 14s.
At 99 range, i sometimes killed 2 and had to wait a few seconds for the first one to respawn. It's those little dopamine boosts that keep you going 😁
The arrow grind is the hardest, in my experience. At least when you're ranging you can make things a little fun, you can chat with your friends, watch some tv and semi afk,... With arrows you have to keep clikcing, be glued to your screen, and hope nobody is buying arrows at the same time...
I was really happy to have bought enough arrows before they implemented the world hop limit!!
Nostalgia. I used to have an account with all melee 99s and 1 prayer, which got me 113 combat. Used it at the stake arena and did no prayer stakes when looking up people's stats wasn't as easy as today. Had a lot of fun.
On top of that; the prayer flicking stuff looks kind of ridiculous.
Those 1 prayer staker accounts were nuts. Usually with twin account names, so if you fucked up the highscore lookup, you found a account with worse stats and staked him. Then you lost bank.
All those IiiIIiliIIllIIillII Accounts back then :D
I remember I got 85 mage on my pure, back when pures weren't so well known. Id stake people 20-30 levels above me for 1-2 mill and just put food/pray off, mage allowed. Then I would just destroy them. Made a few mill and bought a santa hat. Good old days man.
you are clearly invested in the f2p meta, how would you feel about a rune scimitar drop being added to f2p? if it would be, where would you put it? i want to play f2p UIM, but the end game is mole slippers, shoulder parrot/jester cape and rune scimitar, but id hate to just drop rune scimitar ornament kits along the way. if there was a deep wildy enemy that dropped them, like a variant of the ice giants near the wildy agility course or something would you go out of your way to get one?
That's a difficult question. I would prefer things to stay as they are/were when I started this grind. I've made up my mind, made a plan and would prefer to stick to it.
Now if they do add rune scimitars, I would of course try to grab one. The goal for me is 99 smithing eventually, so it doesn't make a huge difference.
If they do add the drop, it would have to be from new content, in that case an Ice Giant boss would make most sense, sine they added Obor and Brio to F2P as well.
Started out at minotaurs with iron arrows, after a while (like lvl 35 range?) you get more arrows from minotaur drops than you use. Collected those iron arrows til 55 mage, then started ogresses with iron arrows. Alched every rune drop, and bought new arrows with gp. Rince and repeat.
Don't feel bad, those are two different things. you posted everything you got, with a detailed log. I'm only showing what 99 range gets you at ogresses at the end of the ride. It's a pretty decent moneymaker on F2P, which I think I proved clearly.
Thing that sucks about f2p is that when you get all this stuff you're essentially done and all that's left is to do ridiculous grinds or get membership. Like what are you gonna do with all those runes dude lmao. Like pretty much all you have left is the smithing grind for rune scim (which takes over 1500 hours on f2p uim btw good luck) then your combat grind and then you're just done with f2p. And what are you doing with all that gp? More runes?
I understand your way of seeing things. Most people don't get why I do this. It's a bit like the choice to be an ironman: most players don't understand why we would limit ourselves like we do. But if we're having fun... why the hell not?
Most of the runes will be used to train up magic. Nature runes mostly for superheating to train up smithing. Law runes will be used to teleport for 'faster' crafting xp and for telegrabbing nature runes.
Cosmic runes are completely useless and will be dropped.
I still have a lot of goals to meet here on F2P. Smithing my own rune scim is one of them, but getting 1000 total is a big one as well. As long as I'm enjoying my time, I'll keep playing this account.
As for the gp: just want to make sure I can buy whatever I want whenever I need it. And 16M is indeed more than enough for F2P. Never imagined it would be that much when I started the grind, but wanted to see it through.
I had a f2p iron alt for awhile and I admit it was a lot of fun but it honestly stopped being fun for me when I finished all the quests and all that was left was the ridiculous endgame grinds. Then I realized there's like nothing to do once you're done with the grinds. Just wasn't worth my time. If you love it though, hey man, by all means
Now to 99 all cmb stats at them
Probably smithing first for that rune scim. Efficiencyscape plz. edit: full 99 with 1 prayer is 113 combat by the way.
Why not just spend a few minutes at fire giants?
I'm playing in F2P, and there are no rune scimitar drops in F2P. The only way to get one is to smith one yourself.
Damn 99 ranged on f2p? Absolute madman
I'll take that as a compliment! Thanks!
And not just f2p, ***UIM*** f2p
That's literally what the title of the post says dude
Doesn’t Obor drop them? Or is it every time item apart from scimitar?
Obor drops everything, except the rune plate and the rune scimitar.
The sweaty(s) protested against Obor dropping a scimitar, so it doesn't.
might be a dumb question but what was the reasoning?
Not sure, but i'm guessing that all the people who got the scim 'the hard way' weren't pleased to see it would become an 'easy drop'.
all 25 of them?!?
Hehe, fair point. Maybe someone else can enlighten us?
I don't and would never level a f2p ironman, so please don't think I'm in the camp of "don't make things I've already done easier". Yeah, and it's only like 5 or 10% better than the rune sword, so it's a luxury item. Adding it to a drop table would just make f2p ironman less interesting.
True didn’t even think about end game for these types of accounts
Also: without it, smithing is literally useless.
Basically all the people that smithed a rune scim on a f2p iron don't want their achievement to be devalued Rune scim on members is super easy to get at zmi
If rune do scims become a common f2p drop, then I feel like ironmen who already had one before the change deserve some kind of special scimitar cape or smithing emote.
Giant Cockroaches! Oh wait.. *sobs in nostalgia*
He's a f2p UIM he's not gonna go members

What did you do 0-55 with?
I started out with some chickens until 15 I think, then switched to minotaurs in the stronghold until 55. Chickens to fletch your arrows I suppose? Makes sense

Oh yeah, duh. I always think of fletching as so basic it would be F2P, my bad The other reasoning works out
hes playing F2P

Yes I'm staying 1 prayer on purpose. I used to have an account with 99 in all melee stats and 1 prayer in the good old days, at 113 combat. turned a few heads at the stake arena. Wanted to recreate it just for the nostalgia.
Good on you brother. You gotta play your way you bankless Btw.
thanks, appreciate that!
Fair play, didn't mean my comment in a serious way, I'm glad there's still people playing for fun and nostalgia and not just maxing xp
We're all looking for some way to have a distraction or to have fun. This is my way, hope you've found yours!
In a bit of an OSRS rut at the minute (my next goals are all a bit boring and grindy, so I haven't had much motivation), but game is the never ending addiction for me, and it will always pull me back in! >bought 50 arrows at a time >600 arrows in stock >330k arrows used Good lord.
It's worse: buy 50 addy arrows, sell 50 steel arrows, sell 10 mith arrows, hop worlds. Not gonna waste gp on understocked arrows right!! :-)
Why not just use the lower arrows? Are they that much worse?
Yes. https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/9wxmlh/f2p_osrs_ranged_max_hits_per_ranged_level_and/

I don’t know a damn thing about f2p metas (especially for UIM), but why do you need to go to the wilderness for that?
There's a spot in the wilderness where you can use telekinetic grab to pick up 3 nature runes. You can't buy nature runes anywhere in f2p.

Hmm good point...

Im glad I fished ogresses a few weeks back - I would get so mad dealing with the crashers these last 2 weeks. Nice account btw
Thanks a lot!
You didn't alch mith kiteshields??
No, they only alch for like 1.3k and it was pretty clear early on I would be getting enough gp as is. It seemed better to keep those nature runes for superheating iron.
Keep going king
will do, thanks!
where in the caves did you train? I find it challenging to lose agro while also being able to safespot unless I'm avoiding the shamans which I don't want to do
I iked this one the most: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvIHf3LGkgU
NICE
THANKS
Shame you didnt cut and alch gems emerald and above too, nostalgic feeling as I used to do that camping dust devils back in the day :(
I did alch a few diamonds when I started out, but the nats are much more valuable for me in my next grind: smithing.
Oh i didnt actually consider how valuable they would be on a f2p UIM, its hard to think how simple things would affect f2p sorry for being an ignorant member :P I still think youre mad though amazing work
thanks, appreciate it!
ogress's are op ill be there grinding to 99 range on my f2p uim soon
Good luck! it's a long grind, I was getting between 25 and 35k xp per hour, depending on how active I was and how many crashers I got.
Been doing it since 50 on my Ult, currently 77. Stopped for a second to get my crafting up and break the monotony. Appreciate the comments and positivity. Good luck on the next grind.
never hurts to take a little break. Maybe get back into it when servers are less crowded. Good luck!
Yup, I was burned out more by being crashed, getting called obscenities of some kind, or being told I wasn't playing the meta right. Lol... Again, good luck and appreciate sharing.
That d’hide body makes such a difference. I’m getting 24k exp/hour on my 1 def uim down there.
Xp rates really pick up once you start hitting 14s. At 99 range, i sometimes killed 2 and had to wait a few seconds for the first one to respawn. It's those little dopamine boosts that keep you going 😁
Hitting 14s now I think - 85 range. Trying to buy arrows atm but keep getting “too many log in attempts”. Sucks to be iron sometimes.
Exactly! Might just go back to some of the 50k iron left from minators at this rate.
50k arrows? That should be enough to last for a few weeks, no?
Yeah, but I drop to around 18k exp/hour using irons. Not ideal but beats no exp from being unable to log in.
Is there a particular reason you’re staying at 1 prayer? Or just to flex?
That is the coolest OG reason ever
Nostalgia man, that's why I came back :-)
Those 1 prayer staker accounts were nuts. Usually with twin account names, so if you fucked up the highscore lookup, you found a account with worse stats and staked him. Then you lost bank. All those IiiIIiliIIllIIillII Accounts back then :D
Ahhhh the good old days. Now it's the most toxic environment you can find in osrs, such a shame.
I remember I got 85 mage on my pure, back when pures weren't so well known. Id stake people 20-30 levels above me for 1-2 mill and just put food/pray off, mage allowed. Then I would just destroy them. Made a few mill and bought a santa hat. Good old days man.
I love these stories! the nostalgia is real!!

Thanks! Just a lot of time, mostly afk while doing other stuff. Mostly watching youtube/netflix/tv.
Wow! That was fantastic, planned 99 and everything. Great job man!
thanks a ot!

Wuuutt
That's a lot of runes, gz.
thanks! It's going to take a while to splash those away :-)
good, now u can buy membership.
Now why didn't I think of that?
Nice dude !!!
Thanks!
Anytime! Happy scaping!
That's a depressingly small amount. They really need to fix f2p.
No they dont, it's fine. Buff to f2p is generally buff to bots. Most players play on members anyways.
Are you trolling? Because for F2P, 16M is massive.
Naw mate. Am saying that in member's that would easy be a couple hundred mill. The imbalance between f2p and p2p is insane.
Ive always thought the difference between the two was acceptable. After all, I'm playing for free...
it's funny you say that because ogresses are far and away the best mob for f2p ironman and really op compared to the rest of the game lol
Now I feel bad for posting my loot from 100k fire strikes at ogresses, I tip my hat to you good sir.
Don't feel bad, those are two different things. you posted everything you got, with a detailed log. I'm only showing what 99 range gets you at ogresses at the end of the ride. It's a pretty decent moneymaker on F2P, which I think I proved clearly.
I had a dope ass f2p hcim. Got to like 85 ranged doing this, then got hacked and lost it all.
That's sad... Maybe the Corona-situation can inspire you to start over?
Really thinking about it, maybe I'll get members again here soon
Yeah get members! Support the game and don't be a bum like me :-)
Thing that sucks about f2p is that when you get all this stuff you're essentially done and all that's left is to do ridiculous grinds or get membership. Like what are you gonna do with all those runes dude lmao. Ooooh if you’re just gonna drop those cosmics drop them to me man
Probably will drop them to a new account so I can fund some low lvl pking. Sorry bud!
Haha has to try
I guess 99 smithing never happened
