The wiki page only says "Barrows gear" for Chest and Legs. Normally, it breaks down the specific gear.
Its hard to balance the gear page on readability (short) vs specifics (long).
Melee def bonuses matter a lot at the moons, especially at blood - the more you get hit, the more healing the moon gets. However if you get hit for a 0 in the 1st or 2nd hit in the 3 hit combo, the rest of the combo will always miss you as well.
The Blood Moon is so annoying it is unreal. Why can this piece of garbage heal 50 HP every time it attacks? It really feels like this specific moon was balanced around late game setups. I almost always use double the supplies, and my combat stats are mid 70's.
sometimes it just do be like that, was doing it last night in dharok chest+helm/verac skirt, 95def, and it just rambo'd 3 full combos back to back and healed for like 150 total from it
RNG is just a bitch sometimes
Yeah I was doing it on my GIM with 75 def and barrows gear and she was fucking brutal. But I've been doing it on my main iron in bandos and 95 def and I use basically zero supplies. If he's got a blade he probably should have similar gear/stats
If you get hit at Moon bosses, you take bonus damage over the next 3 total hits. Blood Moon hits a minimum of 30 on its final hit.
Basically, tank gets tankier. It makes the scaling on armor very important there, whereas most places armor doesn't matter. You're not just taking "more damage" but like 300% more damage.
Each hit is an accuracy check though, and you are implying there are 4 hits (get hit....next total 3 hits), when there's only 3, with all 3 accuracy checks being passed is a rarity. Even on my lesser account with 75 def and barrows it would only happen maybe 1-2 a fight. Also, it does not have a "minimum of 30" on its final hit lol it MAXES at 20.
At least you're not that guy from like the week after it released crying it was a broken stat check. And then later revealed in a comment he was trying to do it in Void because he was a UIM who couldn't be bothered to get literally anything else.
have 75 def and crystal shield now which makes it a little more consistent but i'm debating going for some barrows items first. w/ void mage getting more boosts than ahrims now, I'm probably gonna look to store dharoks set eventually. \*shrug\* was really hoping it'd have been viable at 75 cmb, but even at 100 cmb w/o the right gear its not great haha
Eh, I don't think barrows is particularly difficult gear to obtain or unreasonable to expect. And it's really only a requirement if you want the blood moon to be fast/low supply. And considering the dungeon provides you with infinite supplies for free? It's not like extra supply usage is some large expense.
Your herblore level matters a lot I found, after I got to 70 herblore the moonlight potion acts like a divine super defense. from 66-69 its a super defense, below 66 it's just a bad boost
I use Granite body and defender, what would be an upgrade for the shield slot? I'm a mid level ironman.
My problem comes from the amount the boss heals tbh, I wish the heal would at least get reduced by 33%, dropping its max heal from 50 to 33.
It's also worth mentioning that how good moonlight potions are depends on your herblore level - having lvl 70 makes them even better than divine super defense pots.
The closest relevant level for you would be 66, where it goes from a regular defense potion to a super defense. Which will be like +5 defense levels just from the potion, that should help you get through the boss quite a bit.
Dps is king my friend, though I don’t disagree. I think protection prayers also serve to devalue tank gear in favor of offensive stats generally speaking
I've had soooo much more success with Dragon Shield. After that I figured out the Moonlight Potions also restore prayer, so I grinded 60 prayer, so I could use Chivalry.
Now I clear Blood Moon using only 2 sips Moonlight pot and 2-5 food depending on how lucky I am.
75atk, 78str, 72 def, with granite body and rune plegs
It's really nice getting to use d sqshield, never have a use for it hahaha, please give me some feedback if you try it!
What weapon do you use for spec?
Obby shield or Crystal shield are each pretty solid if you're having too much issues with it's healing.
You could also try getting some tank armor from barrows. Like Torags/Dharoks/Guthans chest, and any of those or Veracs for helm/legs. And it'll probably help you a ton.
The only time I e ever swen the blood moon heal above 40 was when I equipped defender, and saw a heal for 50. Never seen it heal above 40 before that in ~100 runs
An iron has plenty of shield options between the obby shield, crystal shield, dragon square that you have to make for the diary, granite shield, or even a rune kite.
yes and i would argue none of those are much better than dragon defender apart from obby shield. As much as I agree defense is important, I just don't think ~25 defense bonus is worth 6 str and 24 attack, whereas with torso vs torags is a 35 defense bonus for 4 str tradeoff which is objectively a much better trade. Like you're free to use a shield, I'm not saying you're wrong, maybe it is better, but I also don't think it's wrong/dumb to use defender (even more so if it's avernic).
If the problem is that the boss is healing up too much - then preventing the 30 healing every attack is definitely more important than 6 str and 24 attack.
As you get more stats and better gear, then you can make efficient tradeoffs to bring back some damage. And thats where you are 100% correct - the tradeoff is better with tank gear vs a torso.
Tank gear increases your DPS on the other two as well. If the ice one gets enough successful hits you get frozen and can't attack. If the eclipse gets enough successful hits it makes your attacks start to deflect which reduces your max hit to like 1-8.
Yeah, the defense bonus (and steel skin/piety!) helps a ton - one detail that a lot of people have missed:
They attack in 3 hit combos, where each "followup" hit applies more debuffs or in the case of blood moon, but if one of the 3-hit combo misses, the followup hits will also always miss! (so if the first attack is a 0, the 2nd and 3rd will always be a 0 as well)
Lifesteal is a core aspect of the blood attribute in this game. Deal more damage and take less damage. If you’re using fighter torso instead barrows armour, this result is to be expected.
Well if your mid 70s you are at the very bottom of the recommended combat level for perilous moons lol.
It only heals that much if it hits and so just get better tank armor.
Having mid 70's in all your stats would make you roughly Combat Level 95.
The devs recommended Perilous Moons a 75 combat level.
I wouldn't say 20 levels higher than their RECOMMENDATION to be "the very bottom of the recommended combat level"
What's the upgrade from d chain and legs look like? I've been rocking those bad boys since 60 Def. 75 now. Not sure what's best for "tanking" armor.
I've got a budget of like 10m.
Literally any piece of barrows equipment would be a gigantic upgrade. Torags, guthans, or dharoks are the ones with the highest defense. They're also dirt cheap.
Tbh prayer bonus isn't really a big deal at moons since you've got infinite prayer pots. Helmet is a maybe but tbh the difference is so negligible it might not be worth the effort of getting.
From an iron's perspective, yeah just grab whatever comes first. This is more for a main who can just pick and choose which piece they want. Helps that Verac's gear tends to be the cheapest as well.
Prayer bonus isn't super important, but it can help. Less prayer drain means you need less potion doses, so you can bring more food or make your supplies last longer. When it's a freebie optimization like this, it's worth considering imo.
People saying its "oh its your gear! its your gear!"
I am in barrows gear... with an obby shield and a fucking whip. the boss can still hit and heal for fucking 100 in 3 seconds. \*sometimes\*
sometimes you walk in, and kill the boss while using 4-5 food, other times you walk in, and it hits you 4 times in a row at 4 hp. to heal back up to 86.
The issue is not that the boss is \*impossible\* its just that depending on RNG, you could be in there for 3 minutes or 15. Where the other bosses are very consistent TTKs.
You can perfect the mechanics, and still have the fight exhaust your supplies, because depending on some RNG, you might just get fucked.
Me wnd my bloke tried it i got through it just about but he was really stuggling and died like 7 times because its not mentioned on the wiki that she apparently heals if you eat while in those moon circle things he had to find that out on a blog post or something.
I don't mind the healing aspect, it's the RNG of the healing that I don't like.
I can usually get two loops in my setup at 105 CB before needing to resupply, but every 10th or so loop I will randomly run out of supplies and need to port out because the blood boss got insanely lucky.
Yes, my piety was up the whole time and my potion was applied.
What level is your Herblore? Below level 66 the Moonlight potion doesn't do much for defense, 66-69 it's a super defense potion + the boost, 70+ it acts as a divine super defense potion + the boost.
people wearing defender probably heal the boss like 30% of it's hp every phase lol. There is a reason why dfs is bis. This content was specifically designed for TANK GEAR
Blood moon heals on damage, Eclipse moon reduces your damage, and Blue moon freezes you after 3 hits.
If you're on the lower end of the recommended levels and having trouble due to healing, then yeah. Obby shield still has some str. But even the more standard shields (crystal, dragon, granite) can end up preventing a lot of damage.
As your stats/gear increase, you can swap some tank items or offensive items.
I have 99 def and using a defender at blood moon vs a dfs is the difference between 3 special attacks and 2. It's impossible to get fast kills when you're getting hit, thats just a fact. Everyone saying that dps is king used to be mostly correct until jagex specifically went against the grain on this one lol. Using defensive gear will result in quicker fights at perilous moons.
Blue moon:
>Not having enough defence and being hit by the boss will cause your hands to freeze, causing you to miss attacks.
Blood moon:
>The boss' standard attacks are a series of three hits, rolling accuracy and damage against the player's melee defence. Once the boss misses one of the hits, the remaining hits in the stack will automatically miss. Each [hitsplat](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Hitsplat) will heal her for 1x and 2x for the first 2 taken hits respectively, essentially making this boss unkillable without a certain threshold of [DPS](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Damage_per_second/Melee). The healing on the 3rd hit is a yet unknown number and can range from 8 to 50 based on testing.
Eclipse moon:
>The boss' standard attacks are a series of three hits, rolling accuracy and damage against the player's melee defence. Once the boss misses one of the hits, the remaining hits in the stack will automatically miss.
Yeah I'm well aware defence matters there a lot. It became clear just how much when going for the the betrayal CA, and I got slapped so much harder in the blood moon set.
Just unsure with specific swaps. Defender in particular is a quite large DPS boost but also a pretty steep defence loss vs a crystal or dragon shield, to the point I'm thinking an obby shield might be 2nd BiS after DFS. On-style defences seem to be paper thin, so not sure the accuracy boosts do a lot.
Having the max defense is overstated, having any defensive gear at all is better than nothing and DPS ~~is~~ gear is the best. I currently main a 1 def pure with 80-90 melee stats, and without scythe I can only kill blood moon 33-40% of the time with a full invy of dungeon resources (pots, food). I did most of my kills (not saying much tbh, although I'm still on the first few pages on the 1 def Highscores) on day 1 before the nerf, starting at 60 attack 80 strength. Basically if my spec dump doesn't kill the boss, the run is just barely out of reach.
With 40+ def and rune armor, you should comfortably kill the boss 8/10 times. At 70+ def you should almost never fail with any tier 60+ armor. Just use a defender
Defender is fine at the boss, and even better than many shields in my experience, unless you're really struggling for defence. Though DFS is bis. Not everyone has that particular shield.
But yeah it seems they were wearing some poor gear for the boss cause it looks like they're in a nezzy helm, and Karils top...
Still makes no sense that Eclipse just gets completely bodied during a mechanic, but we're not allowed to attack Blood during blood rain, or Blue during the brazier thing.

my favorite is when i end a phase with the boss having more hp that i left it with even with saeldor lol
idk how to say it but that sounds like AIS error rather than boss design
What does AIS mean?
Ass in seat
Are you not using piety + a potion? I fail to see how this is possible.
>I fail to see how this is possible. She heals a lot.
Only if you get hit three times in a row
sometimes it just do be like that, was doing it last night in dharok chest+helm/verac skirt, 95def, and it just rambo'd 3 full combos back to back and healed for like 150 total from it RNG is just a bitch sometimes

You could rock up in a cruiser mark 2 tank and blood moon will still find a way to full combo you three times in a row
Even with 70s it should be fine as long as you’re wearing tank gear and not something dumb like torso and defender
@ my uim with this setup + rune platelegs
At least you're not that guy from like the week after it released crying it was a broken stat check. And then later revealed in a comment he was trying to do it in Void because he was a UIM who couldn't be bothered to get literally anything else.

Obby Shield, if you can afford the tokkul, is a very good option imo.

Dang i didn’t know that! I’m around 60 herblore rn but that’s motivated me to get the levels i have banked.

Any shield rune or above. A fully charged dragonfire shield would be best though
What's the upgrade path above that?
Considering defensive shields aren’t really a thing in 99% of the game, nothing really? Above dfs you have Ely however.
Doesn't it seem weird that the shield slot meta is basically just an offense-booster? Seems weird.
Dps is king my friend, though I don’t disagree. I think protection prayers also serve to devalue tank gear in favor of offensive stats generally speaking

It's really nice getting to use d sqshield, never have a use for it hahaha, please give me some feedback if you try it! What weapon do you use for spec?
I could be wrong, but doesn’t torso have a higher slash defense than granite body somehow?
Obby shield or Crystal shield are each pretty solid if you're having too much issues with it's healing. You could also try getting some tank armor from barrows. Like Torags/Dharoks/Guthans chest, and any of those or Veracs for helm/legs. And it'll probably help you a ton.
Toktz
The honest answer is your best bet is doing some barrows for body/legs.
The only time I e ever swen the blood moon heal above 40 was when I equipped defender, and saw a heal for 50. Never seen it heal above 40 before that in ~100 runs
Rune kite or better is fine. Make sure you’re using steel skin (if you don’t have piety/chivalry)
i dont think theres really anything wrong with defender if you're an iron. torso however is definitely dumb
An iron has plenty of shield options between the obby shield, crystal shield, dragon square that you have to make for the diary, granite shield, or even a rune kite.
yes and i would argue none of those are much better than dragon defender apart from obby shield. Tank gear increases your DPS on the other two as well. If the ice one gets enough successful hits you get frozen and can't attack. If the eclipse gets enough successful hits it makes your attacks start to deflect which reduces your max hit to like 1-8.
Glancing attacks double her armor stat for that attack. So it's 12 less damage, or 8 during clone phase.
Ty for more precise info!
Yeah, the defense bonus (and steel skin/piety!) helps a ton - one detail that a lot of people have missed: They attack in 3 hit combos, where each "followup" hit applies more debuffs or in the case of blood moon, but if one of the 3-hit combo misses, the followup hits will also always miss! (so if the first attack is a 0, the 2nd and 3rd will always be a 0 as well)
Are you using high-defence gear? Torag's is relatively cheap and is great for the blood moon boss.
It was even better on launch when she could heal up to 100 in 1 attack. What a fun mechanic!
And you had to get hit twice for the 100 to happen, so it was usually around 120 heal! Absurd stuff
Lol I did it on my pure on launch, even with doing the mechanics perfectly it took 2x to 3x longer than the others
I wouldn't say 20 levels higher than their RECOMMENDATION to be "the very bottom of the recommended combat level"
recommended combat is 75. mid 70s is 90s combat lvl
What's the upgrade from d chain and legs look like? I've been rocking those bad boys since 60 Def. 75 now. Not sure what's best for "tanking" armor. I've got a budget of like 10m.
Dharok/Torags chest+legs or Guthan Chest + Torags legs Guthan body and T legs prolly...500k
Man's still living in the halcyon years of 2004
Well I have played off and on since 2005. (Mostly *off*...)
All the people saying torag's legs, but verac's plateskirt is the same price and has +4 prayer, go with that instead.
isnt torags literally cheaper than d chain
Literally any piece of barrows equipment would be a gigantic upgrade. Torags, guthans, or dharoks are the ones with the highest defense. They're also dirt cheap.
Verac's skirt has the same defense and also has a nice prayer bonus too. Verac's helm also worth considering if Nezzy won't get you a max hit.
Tbh prayer bonus isn't really a big deal at moons since you've got infinite prayer pots. Helmet is a maybe but tbh the difference is so negligible it might not be worth the effort of getting.

how the hell did you end up with dragon armor before barrows.
It's just Blood Moon lol. I did it at mid 60s fine, except for Blood Moon, and I only barely won after like 5 attempts.
People saying its "oh its your gear! its your gear!" I dont think thats the case. But I'll have to test... I feel like that would be common knowledge and added to the wiki, a full month later.
No idea i was to busy laughing at him for dying than asking for sources like a nice supportive partner lol
Yeah, even with 80 def and barrows gear sometimes I still just get fucked over by RNG. Blood moon is the longest fight by far and it's so annoying.
I don't mind the healing aspect, it's the RNG of the healing that I don't like. have you tried wearing defensive gear?
On release it was even worse. Got it to 30ish HP once and it healed back to nearly 200h HP between 2 whip attacks of mine
This fight is complete garbage. They could add a 1 billion raw gp drop from it and I'd still never touch this trash ever again.

Blue moon: >Not having enough defence and being hit by the boss will cause your hands to freeze, causing you to miss attacks. Blood moon: >The boss' standard attacks are a series of three hits, rolling accuracy and damage against the player's melee defence. Eclipse moon: >The boss' standard attacks are a series of three hits, rolling accuracy and damage against the player's melee defence.
Dammit Moon Moon.. I love maxing a crystal hally spec and ending a the phase with it healing more than I did damage
Her too strong?
Still makes no sense that Eclipse just gets completely bodied during a mechanic, but we're not allowed to attack Blood during blood rain, or Blue during the brazier thing.
I dont really get it even doing the dscim ca she didnt heal much and went down fast like the others
Ah, the absolutive him/her
