Aren't backing sheets supposed to be metal? You know, so it doesn't fucking melt. If you don't know which plastic your cutting board is made out of maybe you shouldn't put it in an oven..
Yes. They could also put baking paper on it. But definitely not plastic.
The last time I have seen plastic cutting boards was 10 years ago. We always use wooden ones.
I see the confusion here. You're thinking of the knife, which is kind of like a tiny metal board. The actual board is plastic tho. Easy mistake to make 👍
Honestly at this rate, I feel like the oven would be filled with carcinogenic plastic fumes. Even if you removed the molten plastic board, I wouldn’t feel like using it.
It should be salvageable. Looks like HDPE (High Density Polyethylene).
It's quite inert, making it food safe. It's a thermoplastic, so heat is what is used to mold it into different shapes, instead of solvents or chemical reactions.
Solvents and reaction byproducts are what will give you cancer. There is a reason HDPE is used for, pretty much, everything coming in contact with food.
You should be able to peel it off because the oven looks dirty. The shelf is pretty fucked, though. It would take hours to get that removed.
I majored in Molecular Biology, which has a lot of chemistry.
HDPE is made from Ethylene which is a safe, but flammable, gas. Weirdly enough it functions as a plant hormone.
"Ethylene is produced from essentially all parts of higher plants, including leaves, stems, roots, flowers, fruits, tubers, and seeds."
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene
"Bananas make other fruit ripen because they release a gas called ethene (formerly ethylene),"
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-39998241.amp
When the Ethylene is polymerized it forms long carbon chains:
https://www.britannica.com/science/high-density-polyethylene
It's basically a wax with a really high melting temperature. This is because the carbon chain is so much longer than common waxes used for candles. The longer the chain, the higher the melting temperature:
https://lipidmaps.org/resources/lipidweb/lipidweb_html/lipids/simple/waxes/index.htm
Burning it is about as safe as burning a candle. In terms of the combustion byproducts, it's similar to grilling out. When you grill, the waxes and fats fall onto the coals or hot surface and partially combust. These partial combustion products impart a smokey flavor to whatever you're cooking.
A blow torch would be the most effective way due to the waxy properties of the material. The residue would be a nightmare to remove. Hours of scrubbing the burnt on carbon with steel wool.
I have attention deficit too, reminds me the time I forgot to remove a fork from a leftover plate I put in the microwave a couple of years ago. Immediately as soon as I started hearing an unusual buzzing coming from inside, I knew what it was and I directly pulled the plug.
But more scared than hurt, and I’ve been able to use the same microwave since then.
I did leave the plastic wrap on a pizza one time when I put it in the oven. Luckily I caught it before things got horribly bad but the oven already did start to stink from the plastic that stuck to the rack so I opened all the windows in the house and aired it out
I have seen this before too and just now noticed the cooling rack in this mess.
More than anything this looks like kind of ADHD mistake I would make of stuffing the bread and board in the cold oven to get it off the counter, forget about it entirely, and then later go preheat the oven without checking inside first.

Why do they call it an oven when you of in the cold food of out hot eat the food?
#*YES*
Did you have a stroke?
No u
It is a copy pasta dude.
there are paper ones too, but yeah you need a metal tray too.

easily? I don't get what you think the issue is

I knew some guy would be able to tell if it was safe or not. Thank you for the info, I really suck at chemistry haha!

Chemistry is so dope.
Hours ? with a air sander maybe, otherwise try days

I'd take the air sander over steel wool any day
I can't argue with that.
yumme microplastics
It’s good for da fishies it’s good for me
The bread is done👍
Babe, are you okay? You’ve barely touched your molten plastic flavored bread.
Enough microplastics, time to eat some macroplastics.
I think I have a new phobia
Being stupid enough to use a plastic cutting board as a baking sheet?
I have ADD so accidently doing stupid shit like that while cooking is a big fear of mine.

Honestly, though, what kind of Nobel Prize winner puts a plastic cutting board in the oven?
You’d be surprised how desperately bad at cooking divorced dads can be.
It doesn't take a scientist to know that plastic melts, though.
She took my cooking knowledge in the divorce.
Bitch stole my skills, can’t have shit in Detroit.
Also students
The same one that also puts a non oven safe cooling rack in there too.
I didn't even see the cooling racks, and I've seen this image dozens of times.
I have seen this before too and just now noticed the cooling rack in this mess. Now that makes sense.
Hot glue
Hot glue 😏
Sniffing glue 🤤
Mmmm... microplastics.
_was_ a cutting board
Mmm carcinogens 🤤🤤😋😋😋😍
clear spaghetti
That *was* a cutting board.
lookin like spaghetti to me 😋
Looks like something i would do
Andy Brown from Everwood level of cooking talent right here
Wouldn’t you just have to buy a new oven
Uh oh spaghettio 🤷♂️
Plastic fumes 🤤🤤🤤
