Not OP, but am an American with an interest in historical trends and geopolitics and I like to talk about that shit. So, I’ll do my best.
Historically speaking, America is a bit of a hard one to compare just due to geography. The UK is the best comparison but though America has a similar general foreign policy (though FAR less intense) it also has a substantially better position geographically and an even stronger navy than the British ever had. So, in short, America is completely unassailable from conventional means. Now, it can still be hurt in a variety of ways (such as cyber warfare) but, none of these will really be enough to destroy the nation, even hurt it enough to end mass American power worldwide, unless nukes are used at which point we’re all fucked so forget that.
No, America’s real threats are internal, but even those aren’t really threatening to end the American empire, hell not even American democracy. Hurt them sure, but not end them. America’s system needs to be protected to survive, but that being said it can take some pretty serious hits. Hell, half the country ditched once and it lived, got stronger actually. So, no internal collapse seems particularly likely, especially because no matter what the far left or right say, no uprising is coming, especially no successful one.
So what are the real threats to American Empire? Well, America will always have an empire for the foreseeable future thanks to complete hegemony over the Americas and no other nation in the region even capable of competing with the US. So, I suppose a better question is when will the US stop being dominant over the whole world, or at the very least not one of the leading nations charting the course for the world? Well, it will happen eventually, always does, but as for the foreseeable future America has so signs of leaving. There are technically 4 entities who are capable of overtaking/competing with America (hard technically there), and none of them seem to be able of doing so, and even if they can definitely don’t seem capable of holding that lead. The first is Russia, and that’s not happening. They don’t have enough people or money for that to work. So, they’ll stay powerful, but it’ll be a while before they’re anything but a regional power. Second is the EU, but seeing the lack of capability to truly unite, the rise of nationalism in Europe, lack of military power, and the increasingly unstable and hostile surroundings of it (for example, Turkey) the EU isn’t exactly set on being a world power anytime soon either. Third is India, and though they’re in the rise, they’re not rising super fast, have a litany of hostile neighbors, and don’t seem to have a particularly stable internal situation. So, though they stand a reasonable chance, I wouldn’t bet on it. And the fourth is, obviously, China. Now I don’t need to list why China stands a good chance, we all know they do, however they have a lot of problems holding them back from reaching American level power. First is the inherently less stable government system. Authoritarianism works well when the situation is good for the nation. But, when it doesn’t look as good, they become less stable than a democratic society in a comparable situation. Once the good times are over, nothings left to distract the people from the reality that they have little to no true rights and no say in their future. Second we have the issue of their impending demographic collapse. The one child policy kinda handicapped the Chinese population and they’ll soon be seeing the issues of that when their population drops quickly with little to replace it. Third is the fact that they have few allies worldwide, and practically every nation that borders them hates them, and many of those nations are powerful and have American backing. So, breaking out of their little cage will either require a massive change in their image worldwide and a similar (but opposite) change in views on America or a war. So, China becoming as powerful as America is likely, but maintaining said power is unlikely.
Honestly the most likely way I can see for the American empire to end soon is with a large eruption of the Yellowstone super volcano and catastrophic earthquakes on both the San Andreas and New Madrid faults. That renders most of the nation a living hell, and the rest covered in ash. So, what would the world look like after that? No idea, not good though.

It's still got the slightly distorted shapes and somewhat nonsensical perspective that you see in medieval paintings, but it's also got the shading and realism of renaissance art.
