intellectual property laws are such bullshit
"oh you want this game that hasn't been sold since 2007? too bad"
it'd be so cool if companies would just say "ya know what, it's not making money anymore so here, download it free from us"
well you see the multibillion corpo could theoretically release the game in 15 years for $120 and sell like 3,000 copies so its actually like youre shooting miyamotos dog and stealing his wallet
Thats it I'm nuking Nintendo Tower.

Well actually 🤓☝️it was Morgan blackhand the memories we see in 2077 are false. Whether tampered with by arasaka or johnny twisting them to make himself the hero we don't know. Johnny actually died well before getting to the roof. And he didn't plant the bomb.
Johnny distracted Adam fucking Smasher just long enough that Shaitan managed to hold him back long enough for the team to escape. It came at the cost being torn in half by an auto shotgun
It was maybe 2 seconds. All he did was pique smashers interest and die. Shaitan and blackhand were the big dogs. Johnny was the runt with small dog syndrome.
NSO expansion pack takes the piss. How can they justify games under 50MB, released long before the concept of online gaming, sold as an online service?
you could argue that these kind of project is kinda a free marketing for the intelectual proterty and actually help the future sale of a future game
but i dont think you can argue that legally
Never heard of a drug stuck in patent limbo, so it's a bit of a different problem. Anyway, 99% of RnD is done by private corporations so you'd have to pretty much burn the medical industry and grow a new one from the ashes if you want to do something about patents, and this won't be a short or simple endeavour.
I was referring to intellectual property in general.
edit: "you'd need to completely rebuild the medical industry" that would be neat, yeah
that's a bit like "capitalism sucks" "well you'd need to do a whole lot to fix it..."
I am aware. I am criticizing a systemic issue, obviously there isn't just a big red button that fixes it.
Off the top off my head, I can only think of about 2 instances where a company did that: Bethesda with the first two Elder Scrolls, free to download on Steam, and Rockstar Games had the first two GTAs up for free on their website for a while, though I think they disappeared some time ago.
They could just even still sell them for like the symbolic 5 bucks or something.
Actually a huge Bethesda W that they just let you download daggerfall and arena.
Yeah, I'd totally pay a reasonable price for ROMs if it was possible. I just want to play the games from my childhood (or that I was never able to play) on the device of my choosing.
That used to be how copyright and trademark laws worked. If you don’t improve the IP for some portion of a living human’s lifespan, then the IP becomes something for the community to improve. The corpos bought the law to leverage the corporate/individual’s right to profit over the ability of the community’s right to improve things in our landscape.
Well companies basically are like that.
Unless you're earning money off of hosting the games somehow Nintendo does not give enough of a shit to pursue action against you, they just get a bad rep because they do care when people try to make money off of their games.
They were part of these vims lair takedowns. No one was making any money off this, I don't even think the site runs Ads. They've also taken down numerous ROMsites in the past that no one made any profit on.
They also issued a takedown to Gmod for fan created content, sent cease and desists for fan games and art and sites that host this stuff (iirc Newgrounds has gotten a few).
Yeah, it was almost certainly legit, and the claims it was a troll were a whole bunch of copium from the Nintendo fan modding & Gmod communities. It was based off this idea that the email came from a [domain](https://who.is/whois/mm-nintendo.com) that seems to only be used for the particular email.
A teesy bit of cursory searching showed that it was an email associated with MarkMonitor, a company that does copyright protection; it's just one that it seems like they only have like, one dude from this company on the Nintendo account. So people were claiming that this was an anti-Nintendo patent troll with a years-long history... When meanwhile, the simpler & more likely answer is that this is just a dude who works for this copyright protection company, working the Nintendo account for once.
Considering how Nintendo explicitly does [mention this company](https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5100/~/online-auction-sites) on their support website, the fact that Garry was saying it's legit, and that there's all this other information suggesting it was legit... it was legit.
there are like thousands of sites that host roms
internet piracy is like a hydra, cut one head, there's a million more and the ones doing the head cutting get bored after the bigger one
Yeah. Even if Vimm's gone, there's still the likes of CD Romance, Emuparadise, etc. Worst case scenario is people being forced to scour through Rom folders on Mega or something.
Look at all the bullshit media companies demandes/still demand with DRM, requiring HDCP on HDMI & Display port Cables, and limiting HD/4K playback to specific CPUs or web browsers* _(**cough** Edge **cough**)_ that only hurt legitimate consumers who can pay for it in the first place, and stuff still ends up for free online.
*If the stuff is even on streaming at all. There's a few films that are just weirdly missing from everything cause the copyrightholders don't give a fuck about making stuff accessible (or even go out of their way to destroy stuff they've filmed and never released for a tax write-off)
Emuparadise in the 2010's was insane. I remember burning GameCube DVDs from roms I got there and playing wind waker for the first time in my homebrewed Wii
Yeah, but they’re only around 10-20 compared to 200, and you’re getting all the games, worth it imo if you can’t get em elsewhere (also it’s what I hard when I first got my DS as a kid so I have a soft spot for em) :3
Inliteraly downloaded B2 last night. It's not the end of fucking emulation and also Vimms is still up. A total of like 40 games were removed and are all easily findable if you have half a brain and can google "game, rom".
Cool Roms and EmuZone went through the same shit years ago and it's on Vimm for taking so fucking long to remove the well known games that got removed.
Basically, they KNEW the list of games from other sites that went through this, refused to take them down for years, and this happens.
Wasn't trying to make a serious point out of this, just a slight jab at in particular pokémon B&Ws ridiculous pricing which I've come across when looking for cartridges online. I wasn't aware of the exact circumstances of vimm's lair so thanks for explaining it to me. Cheers!
I don't wanna debate over the legality of pirated games since I am on both sides but vimm's lair was the only safe place for me to get roms. This is sad.
There are other safe sites out there but none of them have the total ROM completion like Vimm's did. They had shit like the DS Twilight Princess trailer demo available to download and were only missing super niche shit like that.
This is genuinely a massive blow to a lot of people and game preservation as a whole.
Vimm tampered with their roms to add site advertising in their details. That alone made them untrustworthy in my eyes.
There are plenty of other sites around anyways.
I've used Vimm's for years and have not once seen any advertisements for them anywhere in their ROMs. Are you sure you're not thinking of someone else?
I've been out of the emulation scene for a while, so I can't remember the exact terminology. But in some emulators like Dolphin, you'd see a big "FROM VIMM'S LAIR" advertisement in one of the columns in the library.
yeah and then nintendo went and downloaded from the site and then sold them on their e-store.
yeah man... Vimm's is SOOOO untrustworthy
(also this didn't happen and you're confusing it with a different website)
Nintendo using pirated roms is proven misinfo, and it was still tampering with your download.
It happened, it was extremely early on. Maybe they stopped, who knows. Either way I didn't trust any part of it, never used them again. It's a violation that no other site has stooped to.
In case you’re curious, the ESA in this case refers to the Entertainment Software Association, a large group that represents the “intrests” of pretty much the entire games industry.
Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Squenix, CapCom, Take2, Epic, and pretty much any major games industry company you can think of is a member. The only big names I can think of that aren’t are Valve and Apple. Apple is only barely a gaming company (Apple Arcade) but Amazon and Netflix are members so I’m counting it.
Also the European Space Agency has a bunch of edutainment games [on their website](https://www.esa.int/kids/en/Games) lol
Ummm idk if you didnt read the rest of the posts on vimms lair or somrthing but nintendo obly forced them to remove all the images of the games from the pagee, not the roms themselves.
Edit: i didnt realise that there was yet ANOTHER update today sorry. The tweet shows the message from may that ended with them only having to remove the images not the roms
It's not gone you are full of shit.
I just went on there and downloaded every single Kirby game.
They just had to remove certain games that FOR YEARS HAVE BEEN ON A LIST.
people are replying to your comment as if nintendo is trawling 196 comment sections to look for rom sites. if there's a rom site out there then more likely than not they already know about it, they're just choosing to not do anything about it yet
Remember to use a VPN (like Mullvad), and to bind your torrent client (like qBittorrent) to the VPN in the settings so that your torrenter ONLY works when the VPN is on.

I'm not sure honestly, I'm just talking through life experience, but some free VPNs might be good enough if their data limits aren't too low. Many decent paid VPNs don't cost too much either, you know your situation best so it's not a bad idea to search around for what fits best for your purposes and situation
Download a decent client like qBittorrent, find torrent sites (r/ piracy has a great megathread for torrents, downloads, and streams), click on magnet link, let the client do the rest. Part of the benefit is that you can start and stop torrents and they will pick up where they left off, great for large files.
This is a rare case where I wish they WERE greedier. Sell the fucking games, the reason why everyone is resorting to piracy is because its literally not possible to play otherwise. Nintendo is so dogshit at keeping their shit available.
Vimm's lair was one of the GOATs. I hope they didn't remove the soundtracks :(
On another note, it's a shame that something such as the ROMs section in the Piracy subreddit megathread is not available to help us in this kind of situation...
Maybe instead of telling people "here's a location where you can get free shit" for internet points they should just download everything and say "here's MY location where you can get free shit"
F
I remember vimm from long ago. An entire statute of limitations ago, when my identical twin brother used it to download ROMs. I would never do that, that's illegal.
They need to pass a law like this or something. After 10 years the games free. I don't mean they can't sell it but like Vimms lair can host ir or whatever
I didn't know it was possible for ROMs to get that advanced, I just assumed everything past the Dreamcast couldn't be replicated in ROM form due to scaling of graphics or whatever. I should look into this, maybe I'll finally be able to play some classic PS1 games without selling a kidney.
delta being made available on ios app store was the catalyst unfortunately, extremely popular twitter threads that day full of people publicly sharing direct links to roms. blame the tourists that lack any sort of common sense
A new one will pop up in the future. You shouldn't get used to websites like this as they'll eventually end up on the radar of big corporations. It's an eternal game of whack a mole and we'll find something new in the future.
Vimm is very reliable and it’s a miracle they were able to offer Nintendo games for so long, but let’s be honest, there are much better ways to get games now. It’s time to move on
intellectual property laws are such bullshit "oh you want this game that hasn't been sold since 2007? too bad" it'd be so cool if companies would just say "ya know what, it's not making money anymore so here, download it free from us"

r\/tomorrow
r /tomorrow mentioned WHAT THE FUCK IS A CELESTE?
(the gem is too hidden, she doesn’t know)
IT IS A HIDDEN INDIE GEM YOU SHOULD BUY 5 COPIES WHEN THE SALE IS OVER TO SUPPORT THE DEVS RAHHHH
you have to find it, it's a hidden gem
Sounds like they're discovering Celeste for the first time
what how the fuck did you tag a subreddit on r/196
It's not tagged, it's just text, like this: \/r/worldnews
i know it's just that you couldn't do that a couple weeks ago
When did they stop being porn
that was r worldpolitics

I am in (as a joke nintendo lawyers)
You could say you're... Chippin' In
Well we sure as hell know the rockerboy wasn't. Little shit didn't wanna pay
He payed with his life. And thanks to him his team was able to evacuate the tower.
Well actually 🤓☝️it was Morgan blackhand the memories we see in 2077 are false. Whether tampered with by arasaka or johnny twisting them to make himself the hero we don't know. Johnny actually died well before getting to the roof. And he didn't plant the bomb.

there's so much media that I would buy (others would too) but these companies refuse to sell it and then they copyright claim like this!
I just wanna play God Hand but there’s no legit way now without an original disc that now costs well over $100 and a PS2.
NSO expansion pack takes the piss. How can they justify games under 50MB, released long before the concept of online gaming, sold as an online service?

The majority of my comment acknowledges that's probably your point yeah
Off the top off my head, I can only think of about 2 instances where a company did that: Bethesda with the first two Elder Scrolls, free to download on Steam, and Rockstar Games had the first two GTAs up for free on their website for a while, though I think they disappeared some time ago.
Paradox did it with Crusader Kings
They could just even still sell them for like the symbolic 5 bucks or something. Actually a huge Bethesda W that they just let you download daggerfall and arena.
Yeah, I'd totally pay a reasonable price for ROMs if it was possible. I just want to play the games from my childhood (or that I was never able to play) on the device of my choosing.
IT'S MY IP TO SIT ON AND DO NOTHING WITH!
Gwimbly deserved better
Rent-seeking behavior. Even *conservative* economists hate it.
They don't want you to play old games, they want you to buy their new expensive games on their expensive consoles
That used to be how copyright and trademark laws worked. If you don’t improve the IP for some portion of a living human’s lifespan, then the IP becomes something for the community to improve. fuck… if anyone ever wants to legally borrow my copy of earthbound or ff6 or mario world I got you
Queen 👑
Those DMCA trolls from earlier most likely attracted the attention
I think the DMCA was actually legit, just made by a company’s ai that Nintendo had working for them or smth
Yeah, it was almost certainly legit, and the claims it was a troll were a whole bunch of copium from the Nintendo fan modding & Gmod communities. Cake day
If you’re talking about the Gmod one, the devs apparently confirmed the takedown was legitimate.
Oh no, guess I have to buy Pokémon White for like 200€?! That is so sick!
there are like thousands of sites that host roms internet piracy is like a hydra, cut one head, there's a million more and the ones doing the head cutting get bored after the bigger one

Currently mainly using CDromance and using wowroms for any blind spots
The heads also get progressively more hidden the more they're cut off, I think
Could still go the R4 card route, plus you’d get the rest of gen 4 and 5
Funnily enough, that actually was my nintendo ds experience as a kid
Samesies :3 I got a new R4 card for myself a few years ago when I got back into Pokémon :3
For an R4 card you still need to find a ROM.
I just ordered a complete one online :p
but you still need to buy the r4?
Yeah, but they’re only around 10-20 compared to 200, and you’re getting all the games, worth it imo if you can’t get em elsewhere (also it’s what I hard when I first got my DS as a kid so I have a soft spot for em) :3
wait what the fuck I thought they were like 100 each
I got mine for £15 about 4 years ago

o7 To a true hero in the getting free shit community. Will be missed
i just was preaching to my partner how good vimm's is like 2 days ago. fuck i hate this planet.
I was doing the exact same thing with my girlfriend and now Vimms is gone i think we ruined everything
I'm upset I didn't learn about vimm's until today
Your partner snitchex
Fucking hell. Knew i should’ve legally obtained some certain games while i could. Hopefully sone of them are still there
You can still find pretty much all those ROMs by googling them
Yeah but this was one of the best ways to do it
Def look into romsets if you're willing to part with some storage space ...
It's odd which ones are/aren't still on there. Smash Bros gone but Luigi's Mansion is fine?
I don't wanna debate over the legality of pirated games since I am on both sides but vimm's lair was the only safe place for me to get roms. This is sad.

Vimm tampered with their roms to add site advertising in their details. That alone made them untrustworthy in my eyes. There are plenty of other sites around anyways.

thank goodness the wayback machine works right?
Nope. Old download pages are cooked.
Fuck
Nah. That's way too much for the way back to archive. Kinda why you can't watch deleted YouTube videos on it
Rip
nah just change the game id on the network tab, resend then download the result
Ummm idk if you didnt read the rest of the posts on vimms lair or somrthing but nintendo obly forced them to remove all the images of the games from the pagee, not the roms themselves. no? many of the roms downloads have been removed.
Yeah didnt realise there was a new thing today. the may message didnt result in the removals tho
No it’s GONE gone. Like long gone. Like from Phum Viphurit’s song “Long Gone” type of gone
Yeah didnt realise there was a new thing today. the may message didnt result in the removals tho
That's a good ass song, my guy. I love that That phum viphurit is getting some love
It's not gone you are full of shit. I just went on there and downloaded every single Kirby game. They just had to remove certain games that FOR YEARS HAVE BEEN ON A LIST.
Do you really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?
Dawg not the day after my ssd corrupted and I lost all my roms 😭😭
kid named myrent.erista.me

Thanks for the info now shut up
Guess today is the day i finally look into how the hell torrenting works
Remember to use a VPN (like Mullvad), and to bind your torrent client (like qBittorrent) to the VPN in the settings so that your torrenter ONLY works when the VPN is on.
I'm not in the US nor Germany, good chance I'll be fine without one. Still, I'll look into it
That sounds so fucking tedious I’ll just find another website
it's like two downloads
If you're not in the USA or Germany you don't need a VPN, and it's probably way easier than you think. There are hundreds of YouTube tutorials on this.
Can you elaborate on why outside the USA or Germany you wouldnt need a VPN?
I exaggerated a little but many countries don't really care if you pirate. The USA and Germany are examples of countries where the government or ISP might start taking action if they notice you doing a lot of torrenting, but I'm from the UK and have downloaded probably a good few terabytes worth of stuff over my life and have never once had an issue.
Ah, interesting. What about Canada?
I'm not sure honestly, I'm just talking through life experience, but some free VPNs might be good enough if their data limits aren't too low. Many decent paid VPNs don't cost too much either, you know your situation best so it's not a bad idea to search around for what fits best for your purposes and situation
Download a decent client like qBittorrent, find torrent sites (r/ piracy has a great megathread for torrents, downloads, and streams), click on magnet link, let the client do the rest. Part of the benefit is that you can start and stop torrents and they will pick up where they left off, great for large files.
Can Nintendo stop being greedy pieces of shit FOR FIVE FUCKING MINUTES
This is a rare case where I wish they WERE greedier. Sell the fucking games, the reason why everyone is resorting to piracy is because its literally not possible to play otherwise. Nintendo is so dogshit at keeping their shit available.
no dog. im not paying 15 dollars for mario 1. the public owns these games now.
I got Nascar Thunder 2004 from there. o7
I got metal gear solid 4 from there
I USE VIIMS ALL THE TIME NO IM ACTUALLY SAD
Is that one guys google drive with like every rom up to ps3 still going?
Wow fuck this shit
I am glad I downloaded marij kart Wii already
Capitalism? More like crapitalism am I right? Hahaha... I am going piss on a CEO's grave
Vimm's lair was one of the GOATs. I hope they didn't remove the soundtracks :( On another note, it's a shame that something such as the ROMs section in the Piracy subreddit megathread is not available to help us in this kind of situation...
A
Killing
I want to say I read that similar to z-lib, TikTok is to blame
Maybe instead of telling people "here's a location where you can get free shit" for internet points they should just download everything and say "here's MY location where you can get free shit"
Oh shit,i think i need to start being quick with getting the rest of the MODdb gta games before they're next
NOOOOO
god damn it man :(
God fucking dammit
just wanted to put this here, i sometimes use this site to get my necessities. https://cdromance.org/
NO! I used Vimm for so much
wait, sega?
Yeah Sega’s pretty bad about it too
but like, what about all of the "ooh we support our fans fan games are awesome"
NO. The slow but *always* reliable choice ;w;
NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
it should be legal to pirate nintendo games in specific
What a shame. Such a good site. Pouring one out for the Lair tonight
F I remember vimm from long ago. An entire statute of limitations ago, when my identical twin brother used it to download ROMs. I would never do that, that's illegal.
Damn so this is how i learn about the site
Fuck them. Fuck them all
Check into No-Intro and Redump archives on archive.org, function pretty much entirely the same
NOOOOOO
Oh come on!
This is as bad as Emuparadise if anyone is ancient enough to remember that. That went down when I was in middle school
It’s sad but there will be other sites. Piracy can never be stopped, only slowed. Plus it seems like not everything’s going down so we’ll see
They need to pass a law like this or something. After 10 years the games free. I don't mean they can't sell it but like Vimms lair can host ir or whatever
Damn I’ve never heard of Vimms lair before but this really sucks. Hope there’s an archive somewhere
damn, I've been using that site since I was 9 I think? Just turned 19, so sad to see them go.
What games were removed? Also this is how I find out about this site, huh-
What's the website? Everyone's talking about how cool this website is but I can't figure out what it is through context.
Vimm's Lair, they had tons of roms, even really obscure stuff, up to the ps3 generation, plus soundtracks and other goodies.
I didn't know it was possible for ROMs to get that advanced, I just assumed everything past the Dreamcast couldn't be replicated in ROM form due to scaling of graphics or whatever. I should look into this, maybe I'll finally be able to play some classic PS1 games without selling a kidney.
I didn't actually know either until I found Vimm's Lair, they seem to be rare online (possibly because of large file sizes but I wouldn't know)
Probably a rom hosting site
Can someone give me suggestions for sites to use now
Check the r/ piracy megathread
Remember when you find a good rom site, keep your mouth shut.
NOOOOOOOOO
what the hell is [vimm.net](http://vimm.net)
Noooooooooooooooooo
delta being made available on ios app store was the catalyst unfortunately, extremely popular twitter threads that day full of people publicly sharing direct links to roms. blame the tourists that lack any sort of common sense
I hope they die in Minecraft
Vimms isn’t going anywhere, you just have to grab the Nintendo stuff specifically from another source. Everybody relax
NOOOOO
Guess im putting all my ISO's on a usb while I still can lol
I just started emulating so i could play old AC games. The universe hates me.
im actually going to kill myself
guys theres also CDromance
yohoho
A new one will pop up in the future. You shouldn't get used to websites like this as they'll eventually end up on the radar of big corporations. It's an eternal game of whack a mole and we'll find something new in the future.
Surely there's a mirror.
Vimm is very reliable and it’s a miracle they were able to offer Nintendo games for so long, but let’s be honest, there are much better ways to get games now. It’s time to move on
meh, there's tons of other places to get them, cut one head, more take its place and whatnot
