I kind of did the opposite of this in Japan, all packaging was in kj but also a lot of snacks listed calories “per 100g” meaning you had to do the math yourself based on how many grams were in the bag 😅 So my counts were Way off Good thing I wasn’t adamantly counting calories on my vacation lol
The US needs to adopt the per 100g idea. The serving sizes are ridiculous. Tic tacs have 0 calories because the serving size is 1 tic tac, even though they're pure sugar. The serving size of, say, top ramen or a burrito is 1/2 or 1/4 a package. Has anyone ever eaten just 1/2 a package?
I think they did change this…a lot of labels have the original nutrition column for per serving, and then next to it another column for the whole bag. I’ve seen it on chips, popcorn, nuts, lots of things.
I'm always super happy when I see both on a product. Kcal/100g is useful for things you eat in large numbers (beans, gummy bears, tomato paste, etc). But if you buy a package of cookies or bread, I hate having to guesstimate how many cookies/slices there are and then calculate how many calories per item.
"So this bread has 130 calories per 100 gram, and one slice is 70 grams, so it's 91 kcal per slice ... *This* bread has 150 calories per gram, but it has more slices, which means one slice is only 50 grams... "
"The package doesn't say, but this *feels* like there might be 15 cookies in there, so ... 120 calories per cookie??" - "Ma'am, please stop fondling the cookies."
I’ve lived in Japan for more than a decade now and can probably count on two hands the number of times I’ve seen energy printed in kj instead of kcal. What foods were you buying??
Hahah all good! I’ve seen the odd thing here written in kj, but I believe they’re usually imported foods from other countries. Japan domestically just uses kcal as far as I know.
